Undetermined: The Podcast
By Jon and Matt
Undetermined: The PodcastMay 21, 2019
pecial Guests: Toadies and Jackalope Tale's Charles Mooney and Lisa Umbarger
jack·a·lope /ˈjakəˌlōp/ noun a mythical animal depicted as a hare or rabbit with horns, said to exist in parts of North America. Of course, whether they are real or not, depends on who you ask. Thanks to Lisa Umbarger and Charles H. Mooney III (Solshifter/Toadies) we now have some decent Texans on the case and asking the right questions. It was touching to hear that we got them bitten by the podcast bug and have started their own amazing show called "Jackalope Tales". Is it a rock and roll Canon? Or is it a Jackalope Tale? We welcome these two amazing friends back for another episode of Undetermined: The Podcast, to get this whole thing sorted! (Special guest clip from Truck Stop Love!)
UTP Special Guest: Forbidden Place Records' Tony Willis
UTP label partner in crime and the Prince of Doom, Mr. Tony Willis of Forbidden Place Records joins us to discuss a wild, upcoming project. FPR is making a MOVIE! We're stoked to be part of it as contributors and you should become one, too! This is not a run-of-the-mill, rock doc. Instead, it is a stop motion animated deeper look into the world of Ricardo the half vampire, Gary the Werewolf and so many amazing artists as featured guests. Get some!
Special Guest: Death Pose's Jason S. Thompson
big bird. is dead. Long live Death Pose. Jason S. Thompson and crew have created an outstanding album that envelopes the Chicago Rock sound. The album, Midnight Society, is available on a luscious, beautiful, red slab of vinyl. Check them out this fall and winter, on tour with Local H! (And yes, "big bird." is non-capitalized and ends with a period...or did.)
UTP Special Guests: They Watch Us From The Moon
Awesome sauce!
Special Guest: :NoMeansNo/Dead Bob's John Wright
NoMeansNo is an absolute powerhouse of a band that combines elements of punk, metal, precision rock and made Jon fall in love with audio sampling. Since being introduced to the band at 17 years old by our brother Matt Amyx, Jon's wanted to pick John Wright's brain. (If you've spent any significant amount of time around Jon you've likely been forced you to hear their Acapella cover of Dead Kennedy's "Forward to Death" Recently Jon and Matt had the privilege of chatting up John, and found him to be fascinating as he is down to earth. His new solo project DEAD BOB proves that John and his brother Robert still have something to say, and they can still rock your pants off while saying it. Go give it a listen. Better yet, buy it! https://deadbob.bandcamp.com/album/life-like
Enjoy Dandinistas!
Special Guest: Conan Neutron re-returns...again!
When he's not busy writing/recording killer records, organizing music festivals, maintaining multiple podcasts, engaging in relevant social issues, or showing up in documentaries (we've probably left out some stuff...), he's also a great friend who never refuses an invite from a pair of his biggest fans to share the scoop on what's on the horizon. You'd think with all that running around he'd lose a Lung. Turns out, he gained one. Tune in to learn more!
Special Guest: Hayes Noble
Hailing from Galena, IL (near Jon's old stomping grounds) and featured on Forbidden Place Records Hayes Noble might just be the future of rock and roll. Hayes has been touring the Midwest to much acclaim with a sound reminiscent of Dinosaur Jr. (with less dysfunction) as he performs with Team Noble as a sort of punk rock Partridge Family. His debut album, "Head Cleaner," is as intense as it is amazing. Enjoy, Dandies!
Special Guest: Side 4 Collective's Dave Hingerty
It's always a refreshing and interesting conversation when we talk to one of our favorite guests/people Dave Hingerty. Cutting his teeth as a world-class percussionist with the likes of Kila, The Frames, and Josh Ritter, Dave's worked to continually expand his artistic horizons with his collaborative project Side 4 Collective. (Dave provides a groove as a starting point that any artist is welcome to build upon. It's so cool!)
Join us as we catch up on what's happening with our old friend artistically and personally.
PS: It's April....watch out for Easter Eggs!
UTP Special Guest: Joseph Cannon of Resurrectionists (and more!)
We at UTP are dedicated to meeting the most interesting folks on the planet. Meet our latest case study, Joseph Cannon. Joe has worked with good friend of the show, Conan Neutron on his Secret" Friends" and "Action Chief" projects. Conan believed in his work in "Resurrectionists" so much that he's putting out Joe's latest record. After getting turned on to Joe's latest blend of folk and punk, we're believers too. Enjoy Dandies!
UTP/ACS: "Battle For Pandora"
On another very special episode of UTP, we venture back into the Asylum Case Studies universe with comedian and friend Tressa Slater. Join us as we pay homage to actor, Tom Sizemore as he has now passed on to a realm beyond. The Battle for Pandora is The Asylum's attempt to cash in on some of that sweet, Avatar 2 money with a mockbuster that has absolutely nothing to do with the original film. Tressa is hilarious, so give it a listen and a share Dandies!
Special Guests: Godzillionaire's Mike Dye and Ben White
If you know the podcast, you know Jon and Matt love them some Godzillionaire! Such a treat to catch up Mike and Ben to get the scoop on the NEW record and discuss everything from spy balloons to house raids. As always, a good time was had by all. We're so excited!
UTP Special Guests: Munly J. Munly 32nd and Slim Cessna
With projects such as Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, DBUK and Munly & The Lupercalians Denver area legends Munly J. Munly 32nd and Slim Cessna have established themselves as influential and striking fixtures of the Denver arts community for over 30 years. Armed with apocalyptic stories and a sound better experienced than explained, it was truly an honor getting to know these wonderfully unique and talented gentlemen.
Special Guests: Maddie and the Deadnames
Hailing from San Marcos, Texas, Maddie and the Dead Names are an amazing, multi-genre rock band that are coming up! A force to be reckoned with both musically and politically, they are also great to chat with. Enjoy, Dandies!
Special Guest: John Forbes of Tijuana Hercules/SKiN GRAFT Records
John Forbes of Chicago's "Tijuana Hercules," has lived a storied life. We were able to pry some of those (many NSFW, but hilarious,) stories loose on this week's episode of Undetermined The Podcast. Special thanks to SKiN GRAFT Records for getting us together with John and helping to represent some of the best noise and post punk acts to come out of the Midwest.
We were also surprised that we had not met up before with John Forbes. Especially considering that Tressa Slater of The Asylum Case Studies Podcast is a close, mutual friend. Thanks to Tressa for making an appearance, as well. I hope all of our Dandies had a great holiday with friends and family! Cheers!
Special Guests: MUFON's Tom Whitmore and Colonel Crockett Oaks III
Want to know what happens when you put a top MUFON researcher and a retired FBI agent together? (We did too!)
Such a pleasure catching up with two of our favorite guests and talking/speculating about some of our favorite things! From UFOs...to alien/human hybrids...to the Eron scandal...to speculation on Elon Musk's biological make up. We truly had a great time talking to these fascinating individuals!
Special Guest: John Newton of JOHN(TIMESTWO)/Total Wkts
Spoiler alert...the other guy's named John, too!
What a treat getting to know one half of the amazing London duo JOHN(TIMESTWO). Join us as we discuss his journey as a drummer/singer/songwriter/visual artist (his artwork is RAD!), coming up in the London scene, new releases, his awesome Total Wkts project, and much more!
Seriously, Western Hemisphere peeps, you need to check these guys out if you haven't already!
Special Guest: dUg Pinnick of King's X
We've been looking forward to this for a looooong time. Such an honor to spend some time with a true legend's legend. Mr. dUg Pinnick of King's X and so much more!
We could have talked for hours with dUg as we discussed King's X origins/living in Springfield, MO, mutual friends (s'up Monty?), evolving musically/philosophically...even buying awesome t-shirts from Matt in the 90s. Such a great time!
Also, HOLY SHITE is the new King's X a good record!! Seriously. We hope we're still kicking this much ass in our 70s.
UTP/ACS: "Jungle Run"
Back by popular demand! The incomparable Tressa Slater joins us for another installment of the Asylum Case Studies meets Undetermined.
Join us as we revisit The Asylum's 2021 film, "Jungle Run," for a recap. From killer frogs, to giant spiders and every Amazon explorer movie trope in-between, this one's a doozy. Just like piranhas with boats, we had a great time tearing this one apart.
Special Guest: Pack AD's Maya Miller
What a treat to get to know half of Vancouver's legendary garage band duo Pack AD! (Also...s'up Canada?) Join us as we discuss everything from current topics...to currency...to touring...to band origins...to new projects.
Want to know what major horror franchise Maya's script was nearly accepted for? You'll have to tune in to find out!
Special Guest: Captured! By Robots' JBOT
What's a musician to do when they love making music, but hate depending on other musicians to make it happen? Build a robot group of band mates, of course! Alas, the best laid plans can backfire, and you could become enslaved by those metal automatons. From the early days in his career as a "Blue Meanie," to the present, JBOT (aka Jay Vance) would have never guessed that this was to be his demise as he was "CAPTURED by Robots!" It's unfortunate for him, but extremely fortunate for us, as Jay is currently touring with one of the most incredible one-human shows on the planet. Hear what makes the machine(s?) tick on this very special episode of Undetermined the Podcast!
Stay Tuned: JBOT of Captured! By Robots
A moving origins story from our new friend!
Special Guest: Aaron Ball
It would be impossible to find a better choice to narrate legend hunter/writer/musician/(future guest?) Lyle Blackburn's latest book, covering "The FOUKE Monster," AKA- the story behind the "Legend of Boggy Creek" than a man who was integrated into the film's inception. (Literally his first on-screen appearance.) Throw in a golden voice....done and done!
So happy to welcome back our long-time friend Aaron Ball! He's an accomplished opera singer, performer, film actor, and now he can add "audiobook narrator". He's also a lot of fun to talk to. Enjoy the episode!
Is this the Fouke Monster?
Our friend Aaron Ball returns to share a chilling passage from prolific legend hunter and writer Lyle Blackburn. Stay tuned, Dandies!
Special Guest: Alien Ant Farm's Mike Cosgrove
Having lived a life of strange and amazing circumstances, from hanging out in his Long Beach neighborhood with a young Snoop Dogg, to being the drummer for Alien Ant Farm since the band's inception, Mike Cosgrove has seen some amazing things in his life. The band would become certified platinum by covering a Michael Jackson hit, and would later crash The 2003 BET Awards, as their hit making talent brought them all over the world. These stories are just a few in Mike's career of nearly unbelievable encounters and successes. He also has a fantastic, new music project called, "Mystery Schools" that we are super stoked about. A fun listen. Run UTP!
Stay Tuned: Alien Ant Farm's Mike Cosgrove
FYI: Mike's got another band! Check out Mystery Schools!
Special Guest: Colonel Crockett Oaks III
Wow! Just. Wow!
A self-described "Forrest Gump" our friend (and fellow Zizzer) Crockett has truly lived a life worthy of an Homeric epic! From hometown sports hero, to Oklahoma City first responder, to FBI agent assisting in the takedown of Enron, to corporate security executive, to Ukraine envoy, to historical preservationist, to documentarian, to...comic book thief? (The dude's done some stuff!)
Join the guys as they get a MUCH overdue update from one of Matt's oldest and most fascinating friends, West Plains, MO's very own Crockett Oaks III.
Special Guest: Action Chief's Conan Neutron
Just when you think this guy couldn't put any more insanely impressive items on his resume, he and a rag tag crew of rock-n-roll vets provide us with this gem of a project. As Jon puts it, Action Chief "is what post punk is supposed to be." They are amazeballs and we UTP are so stoked to be among the first to experience them!
We always love catching up with one of our oldest and dearest podcast friends and Action Chief guitarist, Conan Neutron. We've never had a dull conversation with Conan, and this episode is no exception.
If you have yet to check out Action Chief do yourself that favor and then spread the word. (Trust us...you'll want bragging rights on getting in early on this project.)
Get your fix: https://actionchief.bandcamp.com/releases
Special Guests: No-Where Jets
The No-Where Jets have been a Pop-punk staple in Dallas for years. In fact, our friends in Solshifter have told us that they have been band BFF's for quite some time. An amazing band and kindred in spirit, we talked first big arena shows, custom colored outfits and what makes Rock and Roll tick. Enjoy, Dandies!
Special Guests: Betty X and Mr. Lifto
What do you get when you throw together two of the craziest, most interesting talents to emerge from late 80s/early 90s Seattle and let them talk about the "good old days"? Awesomeness. Pure awesomeness.
Such a great time catching up with two of our favorite people in Betty X and the Amazing Mr. Lifto.
Join us as we discuss such topics as artists utilizing eggs and poop as projectiles, special cocktails with Leo DiCaprio's posse, footwear of Seattle front men, ashy pancakes, love of Candlebox....and soooo much more!
We can't wait for part 2!!
Gremlins Bonus: Betty X and Mr. Lifto
What happens with the when we try talking to two of our favorite icons about life in 90s Seattle? Gremlins. Stay tuned for the actual episode soon. (We hope!)
Special Guest: Jason S. Thompson of big bird.
Join us as we discuss moving back to the States during a global pandemic, the many wonders of Aldi, and (most importantly) Jason's amazing new heavy music project "big bird." out of Chicago. The windy city is gonna have their hands full with this one! So good!
Check out their new EP "Call/Repeat", buy it, then look for more amazing stuff coming from this great new band. We promise you'll be wanting more quicker than you can say "cease and desist."
Special Guests: Seal Party
Listeners of the show know Kevin Seal and Chris McGrew as their current incarnation of the Bay Area band, "Seal Party." Some may not be aware that before they set out to musically conquer the world in the group, "Griddle," they came from the Midwest. One never knows where conversation is gonna go with these guys. (We dig that!) Join us as we discuss everything from new material, to Midwest vs. West Coast, to politics, to Gwar.
This July, Kevin and Chris are heading home with an all-star lineup of musicians to play for you! Look out Chicago, Indiana, and Cincinnati! You don't want to miss this show if you're anywhere near these gigs. Get out there, dance, and become a member of the Seal Party!
UTP/ACS: "Rise of the Zombies"
We get it all the time. "You guys need to do more B level zombie movie reviews." We are proud to tell you Dandies, that day has come! "Not enough" you say? We know our listeners have refined cinematic palates and wouldn't dream of attempting anything below their standards. So we brought in a ringer.
Enter fellow podcaster and Asylum film aficionado Tressa Slater of The Asylum: case studies podcast. Tressa's earned her bona fides by expertly/hilariously reviewing the "finer points" of films from the studio who brought us such classics as "Sharknado" and "Titanic II" with weekly guests. We are so honored to not only have Tressa as a guest, but for her to have us as hers. We did a podcast mash-up y'all!!
Join us as we discuss the nuanced artistry, societal reflections, and theological quandaries of the Syfy masterpiece "Rise of the Zombies". With an all-star cast including the likes of Mariel Hemingway, LaVar Burton, French Stewart, and Danny Trejo battling hoards of flesh eaters you know it's going to be...something.

If it's entertainment you're after, he doesn't come up short.
Aaron Wollin, A.K.A. "Short E. Dangerously," is a world renowned daredevil/circus side show performer who has earned his moniker in spades. You wish you were half the man he is.

Such an honor and a pleasure to get to know this incredible guy!
Special Guest: Susan O'Neill
Singer. Songwriter. Multi-instrumentalist. Director. Inspiration. It's hard to know where to start when talking about the charmingly refreshing talent that is Susan O'Neill. An hour certainly doesn't do her justice. (But we think it's more than enough to give you a taste of just how amazing she is!)
We had a wonderful time discussing Susan's wonderful documentary The Space Between, connecting with people, making art, her many musical projects, and more! Deep, but not trite. We love that about her. (And so will you!)
Special Guest: Byron and Jason of Interstellar Overdrive
What does it take to produce an incredible Pink Floyd Experience in a medium sized, yet highly artistic community in the center of America? It takes a team, and they do it WELL! We were super stoked to have Byron Neighbors and Jason Caton of Interstellar Overdrive on the show to help promote their upcoming show on April 22nd at The Blue Note, in Columbia, Missouri. As a long time fan, I can tell you that it's mind blowing. Here's a few insights into the moving parts and the friendly musicians who do all of this for YOU! Enjoy.
Interstellar Overdrive
Byron talks about his Big Muff.
Special Guest: Andy Stoma of Young People's Deathkamp
Take a gigantic stew pot, throw in a scoop of intriguing found-sound samples, a cup of intense visual art, a sprinkle of Satan, a dash of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, a generous helping of spectacular guitar work (and maybe a tab). What comes out? The outstanding work of Young People's Deathkamp's, Andy Stoma. The Ithaca, New York has created an amazing amalgamation of sound and art that throws the conventional schema of other genres of sample driven music into the dumpster. We met Andy through our pal Adam Casto of Nerd Table, and decided that he needed an episode to call his own.
Hope you all enjoy it and don't forget to like and share. Take care, Dandies!
Special Guest: Artey Slick
While we Americans don't always recognize the name, there's no mistaking the voice!
Born in Lancashire, England Artey Slick began his musical career as the drummer for the soul band FBI. Following this, Slick rose to fame through his association with the production trio Stock Aitken Waterman. Emerging as a solo artist in the late 80s, he has gone on to sell over 40 million records and top multiple charts around the world. In 2008 he was voted "Best Act Ever" by Internet users at the MTV Europe Music Awards.
To say it's an honor to welcome him to the podcast is truly an understatement! Enjoy, Dandies!
Special Guest: MUFON's Tom Whitmore
One of our favorite returning guests, Mr. Thomas Whitmore has been serving on the board of directors of MUFON (The Mutual UFO Network) since 1995 and has a wealth of knowledge on UFO history/events/theories. After barely scratching the surface of the history of the Majestic 12 in UFO lore in our previous episode, Tom returned to do a deep dive into the documentation, theories of motivation, and the players involved in one of the biggest bombshell conspiracy theories that the world has ever seen. We also had a great time speculating about extraterrestrial life and hearing some incredible stories involving aliens and their contact with us here on Earth. Enjoy the episode Dandies! (And don't forget to like and share!)
Special Guest: Andrew McGibbon of The Bonnevilles
How did we not discover the Bonnevilles sooner?? This amazing "garage punk blues" duo has been rocking Northern Ireland since 2009. Damn, they are good! It was such a pleasure to spend some time getting to know the band's front man/ace guitarist Andrew McGibbon.
Along with being a truly gifted artist, Andy's a great story teller. Join us as he shares tales of growing up in Northern Ireland during the 70s and 80s, discovering the blues, connecting with bad ass drummer Chris McMullan, finding his signature sound, and visiting Robert Johnson's legendary crossroads.
Did Andy sell his soul to the Devil? Listen and tell us what you think!
Thanks so much, man! We had such a blast!
PS - If you haven't already discovered these guys, get on it!: https://www.thebonnevilles.co.uk/home
Special Guest: Mick Flannery
Mick Flannery is truly a generational talent with an impressive and ever-evolving body of work. Seriously...he's done some super cool shit and keeps producing more! We've wanted to get to know this Irish singer/songwriter for some time and were not disappointed. He could tell us to F*ck Off anytime and we'd still love him!
Had a great time talking about the creative process, current projects, working with the amazing Susan O'Neill (stay tuned!), appreciation for chess, parenthood....and more! Really proud of this one!
Thanks for joining us, Mick!
Special Guests: Dungeon Weed
With an incredible response from lovers, and critics alike, the birth of the Bay Area doom duo Dungeon Weed got ears and minds popping, all over the world. Their second installment of an incredibly sludgy, yet hooky double album, "The Eye of the Icosahedron" continues to impress and will make a great addition to your collection. We were lucky enough to have Chris and Dave from Dungeon Weed join us for an episode of Undetermined The Podcast. Now! Let's get busy! -
Weird Sh*t: 1928 West Plains Dance Hall Explosion
In 1928 calamity struck our former hometown of West Plains, MO when the local dance hall exploded leaving dozens of community members dead or injured and making headlines around the world. To this day, an official explanation for this tragedy has yet to be presented. Theories and legends, however, abound.
When we had Dr. N (Undetermined: Deaths, Disappearances, and Mysteries) on previously, we knew we wanted to have her back sometime. We also wanted see what might happen if we actually made an effort to stay on a particular topic. We figured this might be a good one! So glad she agreed!
This one's definitely dark. But we think you'll find it interesting. Enjoy, Dandies!
Special Guest: The Amazing Mr. Lifto returns!
Still need more weird after the last episode? We've got ya covered! So pleased to welcome Joe Lifto back to the podcast!
Joe's truly led an "amazing" life. As a star of the Jim Rose Circus, you KNOW he's got stories! Lucky for us, he shared a few. Listen in to find out about getting banned in Lubbock...touring with rock icons...the art of turning a geek...we even play a little "This Is Your Life" with a very special appearance from an old friend of Joe's who spends a little time looking in the Rearviewmirror. (He's a total Animal!)
Man, it was fun! Can't wait to have you back, Joe!
Special Guests: Jon and Matt
What happens when you leave Jon and Matt to their own devices with no guest to keep them in check? To quote Matt: "Definitely our most effed up yet!"
Join us as we discuss topics such as: Near death experiences: the custom of the sea; cannibalism; body modification; mutilation...and kittens! (We also offer great parenting advice!)
For reals...this one's not for the squeamish!
Special Guest: Justin Pearson of The Locust, Dead Cross, Retox...and more!
Man, he's cool!
What an honor to be joined by The God of Noise, Mr. Justin Pearson. Justin has been making cutting edge, hardcore music for 30 some years under the banner of such incredible acts as The Locust, Dead Cross, Swing Kids, Retox, Satanic Planet and more.
As the proprietor of ThreeOneG Record's he has helped unleash many more amazing records from the likes of The Blood Brothers and Haunted Horses.
In true DIY fashion, Justin has punked Jerry Springer out of a free trip to Chicago, set off a stink bomb or two, and might owe a few vending machine companies some restitution. Listen in as we discuss the evolution of hardcore culture and how to feel like you win without playing the long game.
Enjoy Dandies! We certainly had a blast.
Special Guest: Conan Neutron returns...again!
Theoretically, alternate realities explore infinite possibilities. But we're pretty sure he's busy in all of them.
Had a great time catching up with Conan Neutron and getting the latest from our old friend. It seems he's kept himself occupied with a project or three. (We're looking forward to all of them!) You definitely want the scoop!
But that's not all! We also discuss: Politics...Pandemics...Time travel...Quantum entanglement...Protonic Reversal...and more! (Conan really gets us, and we love him for it!)
Great time as always. Thanks for joining us, Conan!
Special Guest: Isaiah Radkey
When you hail from St. Joseph, MO and your first gig as a band is opening for Fishbone, you're off to a good start. When you follow up by playing festivals around the globe and touring with the likes of Jack White, The Damned, and Foo Fighters you're off to an AMAZING start! While it may seem odd to call Radkey veterans of the rock scene at ages when most bands are just getting started, it's hard to ignore their accomplishments. (Or their talent!) They might be brothers, but Radkey is no novelty act!
There might be a few years between us (we did our best not to look like the creepy old guys hanging out at the college kegger), but it turns out we still have plenty of common ground. Music...comics...movies...video games...etc. Gen X can still hang! (We just have earlier bed times!)
Isaiah Radkey, you sling a mean bass and are hella fun to talk to! Thanks so much for joining us!
We can't wait to see/hear what you guys have in store!
