S2EP6 Assimilation, Adaption and Inclusion: Experience Living in the Diaspora with Yemi and Ijeoma

Is your teeth so white because you're so dark? Is that your real hair? How come your English is so good? Does your cultural name suggest you can't speak English? Did you have to change your name to get a job in the diaspora? In today's episode, my guests, Yemi and Ijeoma share their experiences with overt prejudice, stereotypes and racism while living in the diaspora. We touch on the importance of preserving your identity and remaining true to your culture while understanding that some immigrants may not necessarily want to be associated with their roots for good reasons. We also talk about stereotypical and prejudicial statements including those from our own people while highlighting that all people are beautiful and we must do better to respect and assimilate into each other. We recognize that fear and comfort is sometimes involved when migrating to a different country and emphasize embracing some of the traditions of where you are while keeping your identity in focus.

Ijeoma is a writer, licensed food judge and the co-host of the Africa in my Kitchen Podcast. Yemi is an economist and the podcast producer, host and CEO of Tunuka Media.

In today's episode, my guest, Dr. 'Tope Oriola, a criminologist and associate professor at the University of Alberta discusses how large systems such as government bodies can address violence against women and girls. We discuss how societal norms, traditions and cultural practices perpetuate gender inequality and gender-based violence, identifying a range of contributing factors such as poverty, cultural bias, patriarchy, existing laws, government policies, and level of literacy .
Dr. Oriola is a renowned researcher and teacher and is well known for his work on policing and use of force by police, transnational crimes, terrorism studies, political violence, social movement and resource conflict, and has many publications in leading scholarly journals. He contributes regularly to media interviews and expert opinions, and is the recipient of a number of awards including the Governor General of Canada Academic Gold Medal. He is the president of the Canadian Association of African Studies (CAAS) and the joint Editor-in-Chief of African Security journal.

S1EP1 Understanding the Context of Sexual Violence

S1EP1 Understanding the Context of Sexual Violence

Our guest speaker and I sit down for a heartfelt conversation and begin our series on Ending sexual violence. Focusing on  the recent wave of sexual violence that has sparked an outrage in Nigeria, we talk about the context of sexual violence, rape culture and the perception of sexual violence as an issue as well as address certain misconception about what constitutes consent. Sexual violence is a difficult and heavy conversation but one that needs to continue to raise awareness, speak up for the voiceless, fight against this injustice and protect our generations.
