Ep. 68: How to make your career an enriching and powerful expression of your truest self with Sadie Lincoln

  • How to deal with self-doubt and imposter syndrome

  • How to look at fitness from a completely different perspective

  • How to maintain balance as a busy leader

  • Finding joy in the little things and creating the right priorities with the highlight daily reel habit

  • Why doing it alone is hurting your progress

  • The mental traps most founders fall in

About Sadie Lincoln:

Sadie Lincoln is the co-founder and CEO of barre3, a fitness company focused on teaching people to be balanced in body and empowered from within. Starting in 2008 with the flagship studio in Portland, Oregon, barre3 has grown to include more than 170 franchise studios powered by female entrepreneurs, plus an online-workout streaming-subscriber base in 98+ countries. Ep. 61 New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Energy, Burnout and Being Human

Ep. 61 New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Energy, Burnout and Being Human

Burnout doesn’t discriminate.

"I no longer have enough in the tank to do the job justice," said New Zealand leader Jacinda Ardern announcing shock resignation before upcoming election.

She doesn’t believe she has the energy anymore that her high-pressure job requires of her: “You cannot and should not do the job unless you have a full tank, plus a bit in reserve for those unplanned and unexpected challenges."

She followed this statement by saying: “I’m human.”

How are you doing?

Ep. 57 Busting the Myth of Hustle Culture Once and for All
Aug 01, 202208:05
Ep. 56: Your single greatest 21st-century superpower

Ep. 56: Your single greatest 21st-century superpower

Your single greatest 21st-century superpower:

Pursuing the inconvenient truth over the comforting life (and lie)

So here are 19 inconvenient truths I don't want to forget:

--

1. Working 12-hour days may be a comfortable place to be but that’s not LIFE. I call it the default living.

--

2. It’s easier to burnout than it is to have the courage to realize your potential.

--

3. Success starts on the inside but we chase in on the outside.

--

4. Money is not evil but money alone doesn’t create happiness. Money solves problems. You have different problems when you have money but you still have problems.

--

5. You know exactly what you should be doing, so stop chasing shiny objects. Focus your attention on the things that matter and forget the rest. Oftentimes, these are the scariest things.

--

6. You can solve almost every stress, burnout, and anxiety with 7 easy things: eat well, sleep about 8 hours, move often, meditate, breathe, get some sunlight and connect with people IRL.

--

7. If you spend more time thinking and less time doing, you’ll be in a much better place.

--

8. Stop falling for the cult of productivity and busyness and instead focus on well-being, relationships, and creative living.

--

9. If you are looking for productivity hacks and time management hacks, you’re looking in the wrong place. The only hack is you. Not even bulletproof coffee can give you the clarity you’ll get from time alone.

--

10. If you’re choosing material stuff instead of experiences, you don’t understand the principles of happiness.

--

11. It’s never too late to redesign your life for more simplicity, purpose, joy, and fulfillment.

--

12. Time, energy, health, and attention are your biggest assets. Not the size of your bank account or your title.

--

13. You can complain about the game, or you can break the rules and write yours.

--

14. Your work is not your identity. It’s just something you do. Hopefully, you find it interesting and challenging.

--

15. If you're afraid to do what your soul desires, you have an unhealthy ego.

--

16. If you can replace FOMO (fear of missing out) with JOMO (joy of missing out) you will be happier, even purely by definition.

--

17. The really successful people don’t have a personal brand. They have a business. They don’t want to be found. They are happily creating in solitude, not on social media.

--

18. Being "busy" is a sign of stupidity, not a badge of honor.

--

19. 99% of people would rather be uncomfortable and unhappy than have the courage to shine a light on the dark.

--

That's it. Most people spend their lives avoiding these truths (and end up in a spot they don't want to be because of it).

Start pursuing these truths and watch your results accelerate overnight.

Ep. 55: Finding Clarity

Ep. 55: Finding Clarity

Want to have more clarity, get in touch with your intuition and feel more aligned?

It’s easier than you think.

Just follow these simple steps. This is the exact process I followed to go from burnout and stuck in hustle mindset to redefining my success and living with abundance, joy and freedom, aka unhustle.

5 Steps to Clarity

  1. Slow down to gain clarity - you need to know first what you need clarity around
  2. Tap into your intuition with a simple 6 min meditation - or a walk in nature

Season 2: Trailer

Season 2: Trailer

Hustle is canceled in 2022. Unhustle is the way forward.

Most people think the only way to succeed is to hustle.

You catch up on work on Sundays, fill your schedule with meetings, work 12-hour days, eat lunch at your desk, skip vacations, and put work before your health and family - AGAIN. You feel guilt and shame when taking time off, your mind still at back in the office. We glorify being busy and listen to social media GaryVee type influencers but end up disillusioned, overwhelmed and burnt out.

The way we're working isn't working:

  • 77% of people globally are burnt out worse for women. (Source: Deloitte.)
  • People working 55 or more hours each week face an estimated 35% higher risk of a stroke and a 17% higher risk of dying from heart disease. (Source: WHO)
  • Many studies show that productivity is higher when you work less than 40 hours per week.
24/7 Hustle is Killing our Humanity,  Health & Human Potential.

You can fit your work into your good life, not the other way around.

The Great Resignation or The Great Discontent shows half of American employees looking to change jobs (seeking well-being, flexibility, and purpose.) (Source: Gallup & LinkedIn.)

We can replace Hustle Culture with Human Culture and create sustainable LiveWorkPlay Design.

In an age of burnout, nothing is more important than your wellbeing.

In an age of distractions and overwhelm, nothing is more valuable than your focus and presence.

In an age of uncertainty, nothing is more urgent than having the courage to unlearn old beliefs and behavior and relearn new ones so that you can redefine success on your terms with freedom, joy and flow.

Your humanity and worth are so much more than your ability to hustle.

You may be burnt out but you're not broken. You need courage to make a change.

The future belongs to those who can create a meaningful life and a fulfilling career, without sacrificing one for the other. "Hustle is not the most important word ever". Human is the most important word.

Have the courage to rebel to work and live well.

In a world addicted to hustle, unhustle is a superpower.

Ep. 43: Is lockdown good for productivity and focus with Julian Birkinshaw

Ep. 43: Is lockdown good for productivity and focus with Julian Birkinshaw

  • Lockdown helps us focus on the work that really matters. We are spending 12% less time drawn into large meetings and 9% more time interacting with customers and external partners.
  • Lockdown helps us take responsibility for our own schedules. We do 50% more activities through personal choice — because we see them as important — and half as many because someone else asked us to.
  • During lockdown, we view our work as more worthwhile.  We rate the things we do as valuable to our employer and to ourselves. The number of tasks rated as tiresome drops from 27% to 12%, and the number we could readily offload to others drops from 41% to 27%.

Listen in as Julian and I discuss the good and the bad from lockdown.

Julian Birkinshaw is Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship and Deputy Dean at the London Business School. He is a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA), the Academy of Social Scientists (FAcSS) and the Academy of International Business.

Ep. 42: Lead Like a Woman with Deborah Pegues

Ep. 42: Lead Like a Woman with Deborah Pegues

Did you know recent polling has shown only 5% of women occupy the highest positions with the top 500 companies listed in the New York Stock Exchange? Even though women make up nearly half the workforce in the United States and hold over half of the country’s middle management positions, female CEO’s are still extremely rare. As an African-American woman who has served as VP for a Fortune 500 company, Deborah Smith Pegues has witnessed firsthand the importance of diversity in a business’s upper level leadership and wants to empower more women to embrace their potential as leaders and confidently break into a male-dominated world.

In her upcoming book, Lead Like a Woman, Deborah teaches women how to hone their natural gifts as well as sharpen other important leadership traits, such as developing a strong intuition, sharp interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate concisely. She also counsels women against habits that hold them back such as downplaying their abilities and competence, pursuing perfection to the detriment of their own success, and viewing female colleagues as rivals rather than teammates.

Deborah and I had fun. Listen in.

Ep. 41: Work Life Boundaries and Improved Performance with the Human to Human Movement Founder Bryan Kramer

Bryan Kramer is a renowned business strategist, global keynote speaker, executive trainer and coach, two-time bestselling author and Forbes contributor. As former President and Co-Owner of PureMatter, a Silicon Valley global marketing agency since 2001, he sparked the Human-to-Human H2H movement that set out to humanize business through simpler communication, empathy, and celebrating our imperfections. His TED Talk on the subject in 2014 featured a TED “first – allowing mobile devices during the event to share the experience to illustrate his belief.

Noted as the “Zen master to Digital Marketers” by Forbes, named a “Top 3 Thought Leadership Speakers You Don’t Want to Miss” in Forbes and in “The Top 100 Most Influential People on Twitter” by Business Insider, Bryan teaches speakers, executives and audiences how to up-level their storytelling and how to be more compelling and clear. With more than 350,000 social fans and followers, Bryan believes that being human is our competitive advantage because of our ability to leverage our emotional intelligence alongside technology to scale, in order to share stories in a human way – not corporate speak.

Ep. 36 Working 4 Days a Week Can Radically Change Your Life + Give You a Competitive Edge with Andrew Barnes

Ep. 36 Working 4 Days a Week Can Radically Change Your Life + Give You a Competitive Edge with Andrew Barnes

I invited Andrew to speak about the 4 day work week experiment he conducted in New Zealand. He put his company Perpetual Guardian on a 4 day work week while continued to pay his employees the same.

This experiment turned out to be a huge success - stress went down, productivity went up.

Andrew formed the 4-day week nonprofit global campaign and he wrote a book, The 4 Day Week about the experiment.

Now, is a good time to reassess how we work and live.

Andrew is getting phone calls from 83 countries, asking him about the 4-day work week in support of the effort. Unfortunately, this worthwhile effort may end up costing Andrew his own 4 day week.

The way we work today isn’t fit for the 21st century. And thanks to Andrew and others this conversation has gone mainstream.

We like being busy at work. But there’s a difference between busyness and productivity. The average worker is productive about 3 hours a day. Why do we need to spend 8 hours in the office? Because we measure productivity by time.

Listen to this conversation about how we can change our work culture.

Ep.30 Using Flow to Build a Thriving Business with Instagram Star Kat Coroy

Ep.30 Using Flow to Build a Thriving Business with Instagram Star Kat Coroy

Kat Coroy experienced complete burnout, which put her in a hospital. When she came out, she was determined to create a sustainable life and business for herself. She quit her corporate job and became a thriving entrepreneur by listening to her body and taking naps when she needs to.

Disagreeing with the whole notion of Hustle Culture, Kat has taken her life and income in her hands.

“You can’t be in a flow state and do your best work when you are tired.” - says Kat Coroy.

Her advice for people right now: “Can you take the time you are not working to envision your dream business?”

We talk about building self-confidence and dreaming big. “WHY CAN’T IT BE YOU?” is a question Kat poses to all want us who dream of working less, making more and living fully.

“You can figure stuff out and make it work for you. You can create your dream business.”

Kat built one of the most successful online courses on the Internet by working 7 am - 4 pm, four days a week, by getting into a state of flow to avoid working hard. How does she do it?

Kat’s tips for getting into a state of flow:

  • Contrary to what we think about productivity Kat gets to her email first.  That’s because she gets a lot of love from her clients. It makes her feel good.
  • Use Dragon Naturally Speaking to get out of typing.
  • Use Evernote to create templates.
  • Work in a block of time by setting up 50 min blocks to get it all done.
  • Think about concepts, not tasks.
  • Meditate and keep in a good state in mind to stay happy.
  • When inspiration comes, write it down.
  • Have “little” systems in place to save time.
  • Eliminate the distractions - Kat’s phone is on “airplane” most of the time. “I don’t let my phone rule my life.”
  • Use Facebook Business Manager for her Instagram and Facebook communication.
  • Create a beautiful space to work.
  • Take time for yourself when you need it.
  • Take care of what you eat / exercise.

Right now is a great time to be online. If you want to move forward with your business, what can you do online?

Entrepreneur Takeaway:

Think about what you really want. What makes you thick? What would make you happy?

What can you do to Unhustle? How can you automate your income? Kat runs a super successful online course (only one) on 2 hours a day.  What can you do?

Kat Coroy is an online educator, designer & brander that has worked with the Big Brands in London for 20+ years. She now empowers entrepreneurs and small business owners to find their unique Brand Soul Essence, finally, crack the social media code & become Instagram Rockstars.

She teaches business owners how to confidently and powerfully express their unique gifts and talents on Instagram with authenticity, design, truth, and soul to soul marketing so they can finally get their messages out into the world, impact lives, become successful and create the business of their dreams.
