After 68 episodes, the United Voice Oklahoma podcast has reached it's end! On this final episode, Wayland & Taylor look back at the podcast, and interview Mark Nehrenz, Executive Director of OKC GOOD, who has produced every episode of the podcast. He talks about his journey into storytelling, and what led him to what he does today.

Quintin Hughes Sr. | Stewarding the Renaissance in Northeast OKC
On our second to last EVER episode of the podcast, we are joined by Dr. Quintin Hughes Sr. He wears many hats in our city, and Wayland & Taylor talk to him about his experience in OKC predominately related to his work founding and directing Northeast OKC Renaissance Inc. , and organization that has played a massive role in stewarding the renaissance of NE OKC. Denyvetta Davis is the President of the Northeast OKC Neighborhood Coalition and has been the longtime leader of NE OKC’s JFK neighborhood. Ms. Davis joined us to talk about her decades of experience building up neighborhoods on the Eastside of OKC, and specifically some specific issues related to environmental justice in the areas where she lives and serves.

Scotia has 25 years of experience designing and leading programming for children and women as well as a background in arts and advocacy. As a social entrepreneur and consultant, Scotia seeks to help people and organizations to connect with purpose, self, and others for the common good.

Donna Thompson | Decades of Service in Prison Ministry
Here with us today on the podcast is our friend. Donna Thompson. Donna is one of those women that is always there, humbling serving and making things happen behind the scenes. She is the founder and director of the Oklahoma Baptist State Convention’s Prison Ministry, and has been faithfully serving in that ministry for nearly 20 years. She is also passionate about helping justice-involved individuals with past felonies register to vote, and talks about those details with us today. Darrell Davis | First Black Mayor of Edmond Shares His Story
Here with us today on the United Voice Oklahoma Podcast is Darrell Davis, the recently elected mayor of Edmond, Oklahoma. Darrell is retired from a 35-year civilian career at Tinker Air Force Base, and sat on the Edmond City Council for 9 years. When he was elected Mayor of Edmond in April of 2021, he became the first black mayor ever elected in Edmond, and we are so excited to have him on the podcast today to share about his life experiences with us as he leads one of OKC’s most notable neighboring cities.

Kim and her husband Brad started Spero about 12 years ago and have been PIONEERS and leaders in our community when it comes to welcoming and engaging with refugees resettled in OKC. Sang herself arrived in OKC on a refugee journey from Burma and now works with Kim at Spero. Cyndi represents Oklahoma City’s House District 85, and was recently selected to be the next House minority leader. When she was elected in 2015, Cyndi became the first Asian-American woman elected to the Oklahoma legislature. Wayland and Jon had a great conversation with Cyndi about the ways that race has played a factor in her experience for her whole life, and how she brings those experiences into constantly pressing for better dialogue and relationships between parties in the Oklahoma legislature.
OKC Tax Help | Get That Money Back, You’ve Earned It!
Today Wayland and Jon are joined by Thuan Nguyen and Sache Primeaux-Shaw, of OKC Tax Help, a local network of free tax resources that work to get citizens the refunds they are owed. They discuss the Earned Income Tax Credit that many people qualify for in our communities, and give some hands-on tips for claiming it. Money, race, poverty and taxes, it’s all on the table in this conversation. Make sure you share it with someone who could benefit from the EITC!

Dr. Bob Blackburn | Race & Oklahoma History Part 2: B.C. Franklin & the Merging of Two African American Communities
Dr. Bob Blackburn, Director of the Oklahoma Historical Society, joins Wayland & Cece for a special four parts series entitled “Race & Oklahoma History”. Chief M.T. Berry (Retired) | OKC’s First Black Police Chief Talks Pioneering, Policing, & Understanding
Our guest today is Chief M.T. Berry. In 1998 he became the 47th OKC Chief of Police, the first and only black man to ever hold that title. He was later the assistant city manager for more than 15 years and retired in 2019 after a 48-year career serving our city. H.E. “Gene” Rainbolt | Poverty, Race, & The Resource Gap
This episode we talk to the one and only H.E. ”Gene” Rainbolt, the founder of BancFirst, a member of the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, and a dedicated supporter of many causes in our community. Mr. Rainbolt was born in 1929 , right here in Oklahoma, and shares with us his life experiences and views on poverty, race, and the inequality gap when it comes to resources for those on the margins of society.

In 1987, Perry Lott was arrested, convicted, and spent 31 years in prison for crimes he did not commit. Through the work of The Innocence Project he was proven innocent and released in 2018. In this episode Wayland and Perry dive into the issues of race and injustice in our criminal justice system as Perry shares his life story.

Ron leads a youth mentoring organization in NW OKC called Hope for Generations, and today on the podcast he shares about his experience as a black man “walking a tightrope” between the two worlds occupied by black Christians and white Christians. Sarah Adams-Cornell | Perspectives on Race from a Native American Leader
This week’s podcast episode features a highly enlightening conversation with Sarah Adams-Cornell. Sarah is an advocate for Native American culture, education, and rights. She is a citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, and is involved in a number of leadership roles in our community. This conversation with Cece & Wayland about the ways that racism is expressed to Native Americans, as well as the need for dialogue and reconciliation between African American and Native American communities, is eye-opening and engaging!
