Unleashing the Power of AI & Cybersecurity: An Interview with Martin Fockedey

Unleashing the Power of AI & Cybersecurity: An Interview with Martin Fockedey

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, the intricate correlation between artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity has taken center stage. As AI continues to reshape industries across the board, its influence on bolstering cybersecurity measures has become undeniable. To delve into this fascinating intersection, we had the privilege of interviewing Martin Fockedey, Inspector of Certifications at the Belgian Centre for Cybersecurity. Our conversation spanned from the impact of AI on cybersecurity to emerging trends and the legal aspects governing this dynamic realm.

AI's Transformative Impact on Cybersecurity

Martin Fockedey pointed out that the integration of AI in cybersecurity has marked a paradigm shift. "AI has provided defenders with a powerful tool to enhance their ability to detect, respond to, and prevent cyber threats," he noted. AI algorithms can analyze vast amounts of data at lightning speed, identifying patterns that humans might overlook. This ability has not only streamlined security operations but has also enabled predictive analysis, allowing organizations to thwart potential attacks before they manifest.

Emerging Trends and the Role of Advanced Technologies

As technology marches forward, new avenues for both cyber attacks and defenses have emerged. "Advancements like OpenAI and Generative AI are both a blessing and a challenge," Fockedey explained. While these technologies can bolster the capabilities of cybersecurity tools, they can also potentially be harnessed by malicious actors to create sophisticated attacks. The rapid evolution of AI tools necessitates constant adaptation and innovation in the field of cybersecurity.

AI as a Guardian Against Cyber Threats

Fockedey emphasized that AI's value goes beyond just launching attacks or counterattacks. "AI can act as a guardian, providing a multi-layered defense by monitoring network behavior, detecting anomalies, and autonomously responding to threats," he said. This proactive approach can significantly mitigate the risks of cyberattacks, offering organizations an intelligent shield against evolving threats.

Navigating the Legal Landscape

With great power comes great responsibility, and the use of AI in cybersecurity is no exception. Fockedey discussed the critical role of legislation, legal frameworks, and regulations in ensuring that AI-powered cybersecurity measures are deployed ethically and responsibly. Striking a balance between innovation and compliance is essential to harness AI's potential without compromising privacy and security.

Addressing the Skill Gap through Education

As the conversation shifted towards the workforce, Fockedey acknowledged the widening skill gap in the cybersecurity and AI sectors. "To confront this challenge, comprehensive training is essential," he emphasized. With the rapid evolution of technology, ongoing education and upskilling are crucial to prepare professionals for the complex landscape of AI and cybersecurity.

Looking Ahead with Digitalcity.brussels

Fockedey's insights resonate strongly with the upcoming webinar hosted by Digitalcity.brussels, scheduled for September 19th. The webinar will delve deeper into the synergy between AI and cybersecurity, exploring its intricacies, challenges, and promises. Understanding the role of a Product Owner

Understanding the role of a Product Owner

For most #organisations providing an #engaging and #user-centric digital #experience isn’t a nice-to-have, it’s fundamental. And #understanding how to make that a #successful experience that is aligned to #business goals is what a Digital Product Owner - or #DPO - is for.

A Digital Product Owner (DPO) is the person who #oversees any company’s #digital experience. They work to streamline #internal processes, manage the #tools required to complete these #processes, and ensure that #users have a #consistent and seamless #experience.

Digital Product Owners ease processes across #teams and act as the conduit for #information between each team member. #Interacting with the people (internally and externally) means that DPOs are comfortable speaking to #engineers, #marketers or product teams.

To create a clear sense of the #work required they usually follow the #Scrum / #Agile Method which helps in following what #actions are completed, and the #work that still needs to be done; each of which is tied to a specific #objective defined for the #project and a #team.

The #missions of the Product Owner are both #operational and #strategic. Operationally, the DPO works on the #design and #testing of new #features to improve the product. This monitoring involves drawing up a #schedule, using a #backlog (an ordered list of tasks to be carried out in the development of a product) and meeting #deadlines for #deliverables.

To have a deeper understanding of this role, Digitalcity.brussels interviewed Ornella Maureemootoo - DPO in the #banking industry. Listen to our #Podcast #episode where wetackle the following points:

  • Her path towards a digital #career;
  • The role and #missions of a DPO;
  • The necessary# skills - hard & soft - to be successful;
  • The difference bw. a DPO and a #DPM (Product #Manager);
  • The #challenges a DPO can face and how Scrum helps in easing processes.

Unlocking the Power of #DEI in the Tech Industry

Unlocking the Power of #DEI in the Tech Industry

In today's fast-paced world, the #technology industry plays a pivotal role in shaping our #future. As it continues to #revolutionize every aspect of our lives, it is essential to ensure that this sector reflects the #diverse society it serves. While progress has been made, we still face significant #challenges when it comes to #diversity, #equity, and #inclusion (#DEI). By delving into the importance of proper #strategies, our interview with Sara Mathijs aims in shedding light on how #companies can create an #inclusive culture and #leverage the power of diversity to thrive in the #digital era.

The Imperative of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Embracing DEI in the tech industry is not just a moral obligation; it is also a strategic #imperative. Research has consistently shown that diverse teams are more innovative, creative, and better equipped to solve complex problems. By fostering an inclusive culture, companies can tap into a broader range of perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds. This diversity of thought fuels #innovation, drives customer-centric solutions, and ultimately enhances business #performance. But for this to happen, #businesses need to go beyond mere diversity quotas or tokenistic efforts. A genuine commitment requires a well-defined and comprehensive strategy through #leadership initiatives, #talent development and by cultivating a culture where everyone feels empowered to contribute their #unique #perspectives.

Our #Podcast guest, Sara Mathijs, shares her #insights on how the tech industry has the power to shape the future. To her, embracing #DEI isn't just the right thing to do; it's a competitive advantage that enables organizations to create a #prosperous #future for all. She also shares her #career path in #business and #consulting. As an #entrepreneur and #CEO of Upeo Consulting she helps any #businesses to deliver a better #experience to #customers. How? By maximising the #value of techological #investments & by #designing & building tailor-made #solutions.

How to power progress and gender equity in Tech?

How to power progress and gender equity in Tech?

Despite decades of advancements toward professional #equality, women are still deeply #underrepresented in the #tech industry. Did you know that:

  • The #percentage of #women in tech was actually higher in the 1980s than it is today;
  • 50% of the tech #startups have no women on their #leadership teams;
  • #Technology is the only #STEM #career in which the number of women has #decreased over the past 20 years;
  • Women have only 21% of the tech #jobs at #Google and make up only 31% of the company’s #workforce.

These numbers and statistics are striking! Thus, how to power progress and gender equity in the Tech industry?

To answer this question, Digitalcity.brussels interviewed in April 2023, Anneleen Demasure - CEO of Belgium-based digital experience agency Dropsolid - whose mission is to connect #human & digital / business & technology. How? By offering the best #digital experiences for #businesses and their #stakeholders in all freedom (#opensource technology). Open source is their #DNA and as a digital experience #agency they share their knowledge, code, and expertise by using key #opentechnology, such as #Drupal or #Mautic. With +10yrs of experience, at Skinn, Wijs and Idee Fiks, Anneleen Demasure has achieved strong results in #customer #relations and #strategic #growth. She aims in bringing the best open digital #experiences to businesses and to #tailor it to each user's specific #needs.

"Too often, we see technology as wireframes or code or design where, in the end, they are (vital) solutions for people to be helped, to be heard, to find their way, to be unburdened..."

LISTEN to Anneleen’s thoughts on being a woman in technology, what was her path towards the digital world, what keeps her motivated and her #advice for anyone who wants to make a career in IT. Very insipring!

Brussels: city of the future?

Brussels: city of the future?

According to BCG, #cities account for about 80% of global GDP, making the #future of cities a priority for #governments and #businesses. Before #COVID-19, cities had started to #reimagine themselves through “#smartcity” #initiatives beset by growing & aging #populations, the rising #cost of living, public #health, and more than anything, environmental / #sustainable concerns. The #pandemic and the #technological improvements have accelerated these #trends and brought new ones. To develop #innovative #solutions to problems, many cities are aggregating and sharing more and more "smart" actions. But how can we define it?

A smart city leverages numerous innovation & technologies #(I&T) to #improve the #quality of life of #citizens by enhancing #citymanagement and the use of its #resources.

This is the case of #Brussels who presented in March 17th its strategy for its "smart city" concept deployment, which is also in the sights of many #European cities. Broken down into 48 projects targeting 7 main areas, the Smart City strategy of Brussels is based on the objective to use resources and #services for citizens in an optimal way, keeping in mind the #social, #economic and #environmental challenges.

Game art design comes in the pre-production phase of the development of a video game (2D or 3D) where the game art designer brings the game’s characters, stories, and worlds to life. This can also include anything from clothes, character models and surface textures to visual effects or storyboards.

To have a better understanding of this specific role, Digitalcity.brussels interviewed Maude L'Hoir, Game Art Designer in Belgium.

In this Podcast interview, we go through the following points:

  • Her path towards game design
  • The training available in Belgium
  • Do Game Artists need technical skills such as coding?

The Generative AI revolution in the gaming industry

The Generative AI revolution in the gaming industry

#GenerativeAI (GenAI) is gaining in #popularity, especially with today's #hype around tools such as #ChatGPT, #Midjourney, DALL-E... Artificial intelligence - #AI - has been a crucial part of games creation & development for decades. It’s neither a new nor revolutionary field. However, GenAI is a new tool and has the capacity to revolutionize game development.

This is where generative AI opens up transformative possibilities, according to Fabrice Daniel - Game Designer & CEO of Maracas Studios. To him, it can help in tailoring game #experiences to the #user’s abilities, facilitate the creation of prototypes, reduce testing time, eliminate predictability in games and so much more — all enhancing #gameplay. It’s a win-win not only for #players but for #studios.

However, #GenAI is still in its infancy and will surely be an #influential force in the #future of gaming (and a variety of other #creative industries) but its advances could also jeopardize some #careers to a concerning extent. Besides, it could expose new #legal issues, mainly regarding #copyrights. Given that gaming industry advocates must establish best practices to prove its value.

This is just the tip of the iceberg and the next months will show us on how generative AI can be used in games and all the other industries. Stay tuned!

Women’s Path to Leadership in Tech

Women’s Path to Leadership in Tech

Learning from Women #Tech #Leaders: Dewi Van de Vyven

Just as they are in many sectors, #women are underrepresented in tech #leadership. According to BCG*, women made up almost 28% of the leadership #positions in the #IT industry. After the #pandemic, this rate went - sadly - down the road. Why? Because women still have to overcome #challenges that most #men don't have to face.

So, how can tech #companies expand their #rank of #female leaders?

The #story of Dewi Van de Vyven , co-founder and former #CEO of Flow Pilots, underscores the #dynamic. As she was still was up for an #ambitious #career, she had to go through the implications of her #pregnancy and her #role on her #family. But she made the leap, co-created Flow Pilots and became one of the most #inspiring women in the Tech industry in #Belgium. Her story and #insights are fascinating and we hope, they will resonate to you.

Her story yield #powerful insights and offer #lessons, observations and #visions that might help women's #growth. #Listen to our #interview and #learn:

  • What inspired her to make a #career in IT and develop your own #business?
  • What are the #skills to #climb the ladder in Tech?
  • How we can better #understand the #barriers that impede women in technical roles?
  • What #initiatives have helped to #repair the broken rung?
  • How did the #pandemic impacted women?

The digital transition in Brussels > Episode#5 : building a smart city

It has never been more crucial to make #cities smarter, more efficient, and #sustainable for their residents.

Indeed, with the sustainability #commitments, continued #urban growth and the accelerated improvements of new #technologies - such as #AI, #Cloud Computing or #5G - cities get smarter and have the potential to shape more livable and #responsive spaces. Public and #businesses need to #collaborate together to re-think how we can develop cities by improving residents' experiences and systems; for example by optimising digital-first services, changing #mobility habits and moving to more #resilient infrastructures.

To discuss over the digital transition of Brussels as a smart city, Digitalcity.brussels had a conversation with Tanguy de Lestré - Smart City #Advisor and Nicolas Luiset - Digital Transformation #Strategist; both working at CIRB / CIBG

Listen to our Podcast episode to learn:

  • How the digital transition is implemented in Brussels;
  • The key elements for a successful #transformation and how to create a tool to be in a constant #improvement process;
  • What is a Smart City and what are the main #challenges/opportunities;
  • Who are the major #actors that help in a "Smart City" #strategy;
  • Successful / innovative transformation projects...

Green IT: the time for change is now

Green IT: the time for change is now

The carbon footprint of the tech sector is huge. In addition, experts estimated in 2021 that 3% of the world's electricity supply (+2% of total GHG emissions) was  generated by the impact of Big Data and Cloud Computing alone*. Figures are alarming and yet they are still not widely publicised...

With sustainability now a business imperative, we decided to interview some experts to have a discussion over Green IT. In this episode, we had the pleasure to exchange with Olivier Vergeynst - Director of the Belgian Institute for Sustainable IT, Certified Green IT consultant - on the following points:

  • What Green IT encompasses?
  • The impact of technological advances on the environment
  • How can we support companies to develop "winning" actions in green technologies? What strategies should they implement?
  • The business opportunity for sustainability-driven models across all sectors
  • The paradox between new digital trends (BitCoin, Meta...) and the urgent sustainable actions from the IT sector
  • The situation in Belgium
  • The training and careers available in Green IT

The Digital Transition in Brussels > Episode #4: how to make digital accessible to citizens in Brussels?

The Digital Transition in Brussels > Episode #4: how to make digital accessible to citizens in Brussels?

Digitalisation is omnipresent in our #society and its adoption has accelerated during the Covid-19 #pandemic.

Whether it is to book a doctor's appointment, to transfer money, to enroll children at school..., the #digital way is often the most convenient one. In this context, "being digital" is increasingly becoming a requirement for full social inclusion. It is, thus, essential to increase the accessibility and basic digital #skills of #citizens in a comprehensive and continuous manner. However, this #digitalisation also leads to inequalities within the population (access to IT tools, #knowledge, content...). In order to reduce the digital #gap, the #Brussels' Region has adopted a Digital Appropriation Plan - le Plan d'Appropriation Numérique (Digitalcity.brussels is part of this initiative). Through this plan, the Region recognises the #urgency of taking concrete measures to improve the digital skills of the people.

In this Podcast episode, Tania Maamary - the first Digital Inclusion Coordinator for Brussels-Capital Region, goes through the following points:

  • Her professional background and her current role at the CIRB/CIBG
  • What is exactly a "digital inclusion" and why it is not only a local issue but a European / Global one?
  • Who are the actors of e-inclusion in Brussels and what initiatives are carried out?
  • Can technological progress and equitable/inclusive development be antagonistic?
  • How brands / companies can implement digital accessibility optimisations?
  • What are the key imperatives for developing a successful inclusion strategy?

- Have #leaders made significant #progress in their strategies to reinvent themselves? Or is it still elusive?

- What are the keys for a 'successful' transformation?

- What levers should be activated to reduce the current digital #divide?

The digital transition in Brussels > Episode#2 - Towards a sustainable digital transition

The digital transition in Brussels > Episode#2 - Towards a sustainable digital transition

#Climate change is one of the greatest global #challenge we will face in the coming years. #Governments and companies have already set ambitious objectives to achieve carbon neutrality before 2050. How? By fostering actions, rethinking #business models and reshifting the #IT value chain. And this shift is also a tremendous #opportunity for businesses.

#Green-Tech growth is driven by the adoption of sustainability-driven business model #transformation across sectors. It is is expected to grow at 25-30% yearly over the next years.*

Regarding this, Digitalcity.brussels thought it was more than necessary to see how companies can seize the green #tech opportunity and implement sustainable-driven actions. For this, we have interviewed Thierry Chappé - Sustainable IT Manager at the CIRB / CIBG

Discover, with him, why Green IT is critical for the future of your company, what is it and how to act and build capabilities in the Green-Tech industry.

The digital transition in Brussels > Episode #1 - Success with transformation

The digital transition in Brussels > Episode #1 - Success with transformation

Success with transformation, in general, has always been hard to come by. In the digital world, the challenge became more critical during the Covid-19 pandemic when technologies accelerated vividly. Only about 30%* of companies have navigated a digital transformation successfully worldwide. And navigating it in the midst of uncertainty is complex as new behaviors emerge and evolve dramatically. It is a long process as organizations and employees have to adapt to new ways of working at scale or to create a culture that embrace change and continual learning / improvement.

Furthermore, according to McKensie – June 2022 - while many of the standard issues to digital transformation remain, three factors have emerged:

  • the use of digital tech to achieve strategic differentiation on customer engagement and innovation
  • the development of proprietary assets, such as AI, data, and software
  • a focus on attracting tech-savvy executives and on better integration of tech talent into the organization

Like most countries, Belgium saw a surge in digital adoption during the pandemic and its accelerating pace presented many opportunities but also many challenges – forcing most companies to be more innovative, agile and creative.

At Digitalcity.brussels we wanted to assess how this digitalization has impacted the Belgian society and focus on how businesses could prepare themselves and create a vision for the future?

For this, we have interviewed Nicolas Locoge – Director of the CIRB / CIBG to get his insights on the digital transition in Brussels and Belgium.

This episode of a whole serie of interviews regarding the digital transition in Brussels that will follow with the interviews of Yves Mathonet, Tania Maamaury and Thierry Chappe.

The impact of emerging cyberrisks for businesses

The impact of emerging cyberrisks for businesses

Cybersecurity is a never-ending #issue, but its pace has accelerated with the shift to #remote work during the #pandemic and it has escalated since the start of the #war in #Ukraine. Today, #cyberhacking is a multibillion-dollar enterprise and #attackers use more & more cutting-edge & sophisticated tools, such as artificial intelligence or machine learning.

Besides, a common mistake is to believe that cybersecurity is a matter of #technology and #security. Regarding a study by BCG, 77% of #breaches are the result of an organizational / process or human #failure and only 23% by insufficient security technology. Viewing that the threat is increasing, no company or #government is immune. Today’s most elaborated & effective #cybercontrols will soon be obsolete. This is why companies need to ensure the #resilience of their technology and reinforce their #defenses to be proactive to emerging threats.

In this context, Digitalcity.brussels interviewed Phédra Clouner - Deputy Director of the Centre for Cybersecurity Belgium - to get her thoughtful #insights on the following points:

  • How should companies prepare themselves for the growing threat of cyber security breaches? Have you seen a change in the way companies are addressing the issue?
  • What factors are driving the increase in cyber-attacks?
  • Are there any cybersecurity investments that you think are being misused by businesses?
  • If I am in a C-Level / leadership position concerned about cybersecurity, how do I know if my business is enough  prepared to stay ahead of cyber attackers?
  • What will be the major cybersecurity threats in the coming years?
  • Do you think there is a gap between the pace of change in cyber threats and regulations, which means we should have a more proactive response to this issue?
  • Many organizations do not have enough cybersecurity talent, knowledge and/or expertise, and this shortage is increasing. How can we reduce this gap?

Listen to our episode where we examine the expanding cybersecurity threat and how we can mitigate and manage the digital risk by implementing forward-thinking defensive solutions.

The Health Tech Industry in Belgium

Reinventing models and building new sources of #revenue have never been more important for the #healthcare industry. Its potential is exponential : McKinsey Global Institute has estimated that we would save between $1.5b & $3b as of 2030. This will be driven by a combination of rapid developments thanks to Artificial Intelligence and  #automation. The pace of #change in toward new business models is already underway, for example with #virtual care, next-gen managed #care or the consolidation of care #delivery services / #institutions.

To understand the evolution of this promising industry that has accelerated due to the Covid-19, we have interviewed Azèle Mathieu and Eva Leclercq, both working at MSD (Merck & Co.).
