Picking The Right Tech w/ Ken Ehrmann!
On this episode of the podcast we had the chance to talk with Ken Ehrmann who is an instructional coach outside Philadelphia and is the host of the Poweredup Podcast. We had the chance to talk about what we learned as substitute teachers, how Ken was able to start a news show with his 5th graders, and why it is important to have a good reason to use a new technology or platform in the classroom! The Process of Unlearning w/ Sabba Quidway!!
We are back with part 2 of our conversation with Dr. Sabba Quidway from Designing Schools! (designingschools.org) On this episode we talked with Sabba about how we need to be willing to unlearn certain habits if we are going to find our strengths and passions. As teachers we can feel like our gifts get pushed to the back burner with all of the duties and requirements of the profession, but Sabba encourages us to find the support we need to embrace change in our classrooms. We are so grateful to Sabba for spending time with us and we hope to have her back on the podcast soon!!

Design Thinking With Sabba Quidway!!
We had the pleasure of talking Dr. Sabba Quidway for the podcast to learn about her passion for designed thinking in schools. During the first part of our conversation we discuss how Seth Godin's Book LINCHPIN changed Sabba's life, how we can get clarity on the problems we are facing, and the basic structure of designed thinking. What is Worth Fighting For? w/ Rae Hughart
We are back with part two of our conversation with Rae Hughart from Teacher Better Team. In this half of the podcast we discussed how to find your authenticity, why teachers fear advocating for themselves, and how to determine what issues and problems are worth fighting for in your school. Again we are grateful for Rae's perspective as she has a hand in so many different educational communities. She really helped us see some things beyond our typical point of view and reframed our role as educators in a powerful way. Advocating For Ourselves as Teachers w/ Rae Hughart
Administrators can't figure out why teachers aren't understand what they are asking them to do and teachers can't understand why administrators aren't seeing the big picture. That is what Rae Hughart CXO of the Teacher Better Team told us on the podcast this week. This is part 1 of 2 with Rae as we catch up with her for the first time in a few years and learn what her experience has been working with teachers, students, and admin over the past few years. Rae tells us not just about the communication problems she sees, but also that we as teachers are not advocating for ourselves in the ways that we should. We hope you enjoy and tune in next week for part 2.

Car Sessions #14
Here are some of Kyle's thoughts from the week of January 4th. Trying out a new format to answer the same questions everyday.
1. What did you do today to defeat the cloned version of yourself from this morning? Taken from Kevin Estella
2. How did you add value today?
3. How did you breathe life today?
4. What needs to be done tomorrow?

Losing the Perception War as Teachers
Here is the second half of our interview with Hal Bowman (halbowman.com) and in this part of the conversation we talked about how teachers are losing the perception war. We were talking about how it seems that we are not just losing teachers who are new to the profession, but the rockstar teachers who have the valuable experience. The subject shifted to how we can recruit better people to the profession which was what pushed us into a conversation about why people would want to be a part of a profession so that so much of society seems to have disdain for.
We asked ourselves how can we make positivity louder in teaching and let everyone know that those viral videos you see on social media are happening every minute of everyday in classrooms around the country. Teachers who genuinely love kids and teaching are the rule, not the exception.

Who Do We Need To Be As Teachers?
We had the chance to catch up with our guy Hal Bowman (https://halbowman.com/) for the podcast to talk about what it has been like over the last few years as a professional development facilitator and what he is seeing from the teachers he works with. In part 1 of our conversation Hal talks about how this profession is simply, but not easy. We talked about how people outside of the classroom could never understand what it actually takes to be a teacher. We asked the question who do we need to become as educators now that our students can get everything we would teach them through the internet.
We hope you enjoy this episode and if you are not connected with Hal we encourage you to do so!!

Airing Out Frustrations
Welcome back to the ABCs of Inspired Teaching. We went back and forth about whether to release this conversation as a podcast or to leave it be, but we thought it was important to be transparent and vulnerable about where we are at. We recorded this conversation about a month ago when we were both particularly frustrated. Thankfully things have gotten better for both of us as we have taken steps to make them that way. We hope that it is ok to share this with you and the you'll forgive us for being blunt at times. We just want you to know that if you're struggling your not alone and we're here to support you however we can!!

Teaching In A State of Flux
It has been more than two years since the start of the pandemic and education continues to be in a state of flux. However, teaching has always been in a state of flux. Our classrooms don't just change every semester or every year, they are changing on the daily. Your groups of kids will come in differently every single day and it is up to us to be able to adapt to these changes and deliver the best instruction we can to our kids. That is what we are talking about on this episode.
How do you adapt and engage your different classes on the daily? Let us know on social media!!

Chapter 2: Dedication, Empathy, Fairness
It has been an interesting process over the last several years to try to write our first book. So many different concepts and structures that it is strange to listen back to ideas we recorded two years ago and see what it has become. These are the original conversations we had about the 26 words that make up THE ABCs of INSPIRED TEACHING. These words make up our 2nd chapter represent how we act within the relationships we have established through chapter 1. Forgive the format and poor audio please. We felt this was important for us to reflect on and share!!

What We Learned In 2021
As we get into 2022 and try to find our footing in a teaching landscape that is shifting below us we thought it would be important to take a look back at what we learned in 2021. A theme that appeared throughout our conversation is letting go of assumptions. Letting go of the things we thought we knew about teaching and learned and embracing our ability to innovate on the fly. We also tackle questions like how do we redirect and manage the behaviors of students who aren't in the normal progression of behavior. Many of our kids haven't had a normal year in four years, so they really aren't acting their age. These are the things we talk about on this episode. We hope you enjoy it!!

Gary Gray Jr. on Revising Stories
Welcome to THE ABCS of INSPIRED TEACHING!! This is the 4th version of a podcast that has been hosted by Wilkie Law and Kyle Krueger since 2016. Over the course of five years we've tried different approaches in creating a podcast that makes a difference for teachers and this is where we have landed.
This podcast hopes to breathe life into teachers and help them pull out all the good things that are already inside their students. We will interview people who inspire us, teachers who can share their stories of inspiration and share practical wisdom for teachers who want to be their best for kids.
This episode is with our friend Gary Gray Jr. Gary is a Black Canadian who teaches internationally. He has been a guest on the show more times than anyone else and it is because of how he inspires us. We talked with Gary about the books he is writing, why he chooses to tell stories and how we can't rush the revising process.

Connectivity!
Connectivity: the state or extent of being connected or interconnected
Before we get started with the new podcasts in 2022 when want to through it back to the conversations that started us on this journey to a book and new podcast. This conversation turned into the basis for our section on CONNECTIVITY. To sum it up-- connection is essential if you want to breathe life into your kids!!

Here are some thoughts from Kyle for the week of 11-29-21. A little more content and a little crappier sound, but we still want to share some thoughts with you. More importantly is a positive reflection practice that is paying dividends!
The ABCs #2: Believability!
Believability- the quality of being able to be believed; credibility
As we work through this school year and all of the challenges we face as educators we know that our credibility is more important than ever. We are asked to speak on and model so many things now that it is crucial that our kids believe that we are who we say we are. This recording was one of 26 we originally did for our book and as we get set to start a new year of podcasts we'd like to share these old ones with you. It is amazing to us that even though these were recorded in 2019-20 they still ring as true as ever.
Let us know how you make yourself believable to your kids on social media @theabcsofinspiredteaching

The ABCs of Inspired Teaching: Authenticity
So we have been slowly letting the cat out of the bag that we are getting set to publish our first book this spring titled THE ABCs OF INSPIRED TEACHING. It is a collection of words that will help teachers breathe life into their craft and their students. The first word in the ABCs is AUTHENTICITY. We believe that this is the mother of all virtues when it comes to inspired teaching. What we are sharing with you in the original recording we did to rough draft the book. We recorded each word, transcribed the conversation, then built the book out from there. We hope you enjoy the conversation and forgive the stuffed nose Kyle had.
More information on the ABCs to come at the start of 2022!!

#344: Nothing Great Comes Without Sacrifice
Originally when we started workshopping this podcast episode we thought it was going to be about the importance of showing up at events that are important to our students. What it turned into is the importance of being willing to make sacrifices for our students and the number one thing we sacrifice for our kids is out time. We all live lives outside of school and have priorities, but too often we forget about the benefits of sacrificing some of our own time to be there for our kids.
We only see the time we are giving up, but we fail to realize all the benefits of giving that little bit of extra time and effort to our kids. And we don't just mean the benefits to our students either!! What sacrifices are you willing to make to create a better culture for your school and kids??

#343: Step Up, But Know When to Step Back
We know that our schools are not the only ones that are facing a difficult time with staffing, absences, and substitutes. Many teachers are being stretched too thin and having to make tough choices about how to protect themselves and their mental health. On this episode we talk about how we are approaching this challenge on our campuses, why we need to step up if we can, but also why we need to say no when we must. We hope this episode helps you in whatever situation you are in!

Car Session #1
I've been trying to work on his reflective practice this school year, so I bought an action camera that I can mount in my car. I have been talking to it on my way to school and home as a form of reflection and I thought I would share it with you. I am working through some things regarding equity and COVID protocols. I thought about cutting them out, but I figured if you hear them and can give me advice I will be the better for it.
Thanks for listening!

#341: You Are What Your Kids Need
Welcome back to the Value Adds Value Podcast. On this episode Kyle talks about how he's setting boundaries while giving students that chance to be accountable, how some of the 8th graders are still more like 6th graders, and how you need to be who you are because that person is who your kids need.
If you have advice on how to build accountability while setting boundaries please let us know on social media!!

#340: Being Someone Else Takes Energy
As teachers it can be easy to try to be someone else. We can fall for the myth that if we copy a teacher who is 'successful' that we will automatically be successful ourselves. Maybe we invent a character of who we want to be as an educator, but both of those take a lot of energy to maintain. Let's be the best of ourselves!!

#339: Be Weary of Unsolicited Advice
Welcome back the the Value Adds Value Podcast! On this episode Kyle talks a little bit about the start of his year and introduces one of the ABCs of Inspired Teaching--AUTHENTICITY. A big part of being authentic as an educator is to be weary of unsolicited advice. It can seem logical to take all the advice you are given as a new teacher, but we mindful of where you are getting your feedback. You never know what someone's motivation is when giving you feedback if they are not in your circle. So make sure you build a tight circle of teachers that will give you the needed feedback to be the teacher you want to be!

#337: Kyle's Goals For The School Year
Thanks for checking out this episode of the podcast! I wanted to jump on here and talk a little bit about the start of my school year and what I am focused on. With so many things going on around me and so much that is out of my control I want to stay focused on where I can make a difference. I have to show up everyday to make difference for my kids!!

#336: Set Unique Goals!
On this episode of Value Adds Value we're sharing a conversation we had at the start of 2018 on the importance of setting unique goals. Unique goals are specific to our skills and have a clear path to helping us achieve our big picture goals. Big picture goals are great, but they can be hard to achieve without specific goals that move the ball down the field. On our next episode we are going to share our goals for the 2021-22 school year. We hope you'll check it out!

#335: Find True North
What is your True North? What is your guiding light? What is your purpose? That is what we talk about on this throwback episode of Value Adds Value. It is so important for us to remember why we got into teaching and what our purpose is. It might be easy to do this to start the year, but we want to make sure that your purpose is rock solid for when things get rough.
What is your purpose?

#334: Building Classroom Culture
On this episode of Value Adds Value we are throwing it back to our 5th episode ever. We apologize if the sound quality is lower and the conversation choppy, but we want to look back at where we've come from. We want to ensure that what are saying now are things we've been saying over the last four years. And we want you to hear the message that relationships are what build classroom culture! Rather than just focusing on procedures and expectations this fall make sure that you know how crucial our relationships are to our classroom culture!

#330: When to Say No
determiner
not any: there is no excuse | no two plants are alike. • used to indicate that something is quite the opposite of what is being specified: it was no easy task persuading her | Toby is no fool. • hardly any: you'll be back in no time. • used in notices or slogans forbidding or rejecting something specified: “No Smoking” signs | no nukes. exclamation used to give a negative response: “Is anything wrong?” “No.”. •
expressing disagreement or contradiction:
“This is boring.” “No, it's not!”. • expressing agreement with or affirmation of a negative statement: they would never cause a fuss, oh no. • expressing shock or disappointment at something one has heard or discovered: oh no, look at this!
adverb
1 [with comparative] not at all; to no extent: they were no more able to perform the task than I was.
We discuss when to use these various versions of NO on this episode of the VALUE ADDS VALUE PODCAST!!

#328: Being a More Human Human
Welcome back to Value Adds Value!! This episode kinda came together on its own as we were having a conversation that we are glad we recorded. We started by asking a couple of questions from our We Connect Cards (weand.me) then began to rap about what we have been feeling over the last few weeks. The message-- be a more human human. We want to model for our students what it looks like to see a person and not give in to the labels that society puts on them. We hope you enjoy it.

#327: A Conversation On Community with Amen Rahh!
What is good fam?! We are so pumped to share part 1 of our conversation with Amen Rahh on how to uplift communities through education. Principal Rahh was born and raised in Compton, California, and is a high school principal there at the University Pathways school. We wanted to connect with with Rahh to hear little about how things were going in California and how he is running his school, but it turned into a conversation about how schools can build our communities. We talked about the communities we came from and how they have changed along with how our perspectives of them have changed. As adults we see our towns differently than we once did and it bring up questions about our roles there and how we can make them better.
Here are a few other things we talked about on the podcast:
The Alchemist Students adapting to virtual learning Sacred Knowledge and Skills Community Values School Pipelines The standardizing of unstandardized conditions in education Our rural and urban experiences
We hope you enjoy this episode of the podcast and check back next week for part two of this conversation with Amen Rahh!

#326: A Talk On Critical Race Theory
There has been a lot of talk in the recent months about Critical Race Theory. Over half the states have introduced laws that would make it nearly impossible to discussion topics having to do with equity and race. Five states have already passed laws to make it more difficult to teach these topics including Texas. Everyday you can read a new story of a school board meeting that goes off the rails because of the misconceptions about CRT, so we wanted to talk it through.
Here are the questions we asked:
1. What is Critical Race Theory?
2. Why are so many people afraid of or angered by Critical Race Theory?
3. If we don't discuss race with our students what are the consequences?
We are doing our part to further the discussion in the hopes that we can come to an understanding of how equity work improves our schools. We'd love to hear your thoughts, so find us on social media to keep the conversation moving.

#323: A Conversation with Joe Beckman!
Over the last 15+ years Joe Beckman has spoken in educational settings all over the world with one simple mission… to reclaim human connection. We were so lucky to have the chance to talk with him about his new book JUST LOOK UP!
Just look up. It is amazing how easy it can be to forget to look up and appreciate what we have as teachers. It is especially true this year that we have gotten bogged down in our classrooms, virtual or otherwise, and lost sight of our purpose. That is why we were so fortunate to have Joe Beckman on the podcast this week to talk about classroom culture, authenticity and his new book JUST LOOK UP!
We also got to talk about how to make connection the plate that all our other plates sit on, striving towards community culture in through community buy in, and and how we can stay focused on our values.
