Bios:

Dr Charlie Easmon trained at St George's. London. He did his elective in Ghana (his country of birth) and has since worked with, among others, Merlin, Raleigh International and Save the Children in Rwanda, and ECHO in Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

He has been privileged to work in and visit 75 countries.

Charlie’s interest in mental health in the workplace came late through his occupational health work in which he saw the consequences of poor work environments, late referral, lack of mental health support resources or poor management. He lectures in schools to children, parents and teachers on mental health.

He has built his own private medical business through various (at times stressful) ups and downs over the last 15 years and has counted 12% of the FT100 amongst his clients. The current business is called Your Excellent Health Service www.yourexcellenthealth.co.uk and is based at 1 Harley Street

Roz Savage MBE is the first (and so far only) woman to row solo across the world’s “Big Three” oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian, earning four Guinness World Records. A latecomer to the world of adventure, she was inspired to pick up her oars for the environmental cause after seeing the retreating glaciers in the South American Andes.

She has written two books about her ocean adventures, and earlier this year published The Gifts of Solitude: A Guide to Surviving and Thriving in Isolation, drawing on her experiences as a solo rower to support people struggling with lockdown.

She now writes, speaks, and lectures on sustainability, courage, resilience, and leadership, and is the founder of the Sisters, a global women’s movement.

http://1stlifemanagement.co.uk/index.php/about-1st-life-management/toni/

By the time she was 27, Toni McClelland was proactively working with councillors through the London riots and bombings as well as being a lay visitor for the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA), she was embedded in the community and the go to person. She was fast emerging as a crisis leader

With a wealth of strategic business development experience across criminal justice, education, care and fast forward to the present day, my work has seen me managing multi-million-pound budgets and portfolio projects whilst focusing on large reorganisations, transformations, evaluations, service reviews and feasibility projects

She is passionate about individualisation, personalisation awareness, organisational cultures and bringing sustainable change with empowerment, embracing difference and inclusion at the heart.

Episode 122 - Truly Hue-Man Conversation by HumansFirst - Cordelia Gaffer, Heather Younger & Brooke Erol

Episode 122 - Truly Hue-Man Conversation by HumansFirst - Cordelia Gaffer, Heather Younger & Brooke Erol

Today Mike Vacanti hosts a stunning hue-man conversation with Heather Younger, Brooke Erol and Cordelia Gaffer.

Bios:

Brooke O. Erol started her career at IBM following the traditional path she was given to be "successful". She quit her "great job" on paper after 11 years, feeling she is not aligned with it. She started her journey to find her purpose in life. She started her first business in 2003 YourBestLife to help professionals who don’t like their jobs and want to find more meaning at work. After being around so many unhappy people at work as her clients, she decided to help the organizations and leaders who employed them. She started her second business Purposeful Business to help leaders catch up with our times and grow their businesses without sacrificing the well-being of their people; where profit becomes a by-product rather than the main goal . She believes life is too precious to live only for weekends and retirement. She is the author of Create a Life You Love. She is also the co-author of "From Hierarchy to High Performance: Unleashing the Hidden Superpowers of Ordinary People to Realize Extraordinary Results" that became an International Best Seller in 2018. She speaks and writes about Leadership, Purpose-Driven Life and Organizations, Future of Work in the US and abroad.

Hi I'm Cordelia Gaffar, the Emotions Opener Transformation Strategist helping female change makers and entrepreneurs with leaning into difficult emotions so you can show up powerfully! The process to transform your heart so that you can transform your mind is called Replenish Me. It is a complete system of self-nurturing built on nutritional, fitness, scientific and spiritual practices. The steps are Release, Restructure, Refresh and Rebirth

1. Release is Self-compassion and self-forgiveness
2. Restructure is being discipline with habits that support you physically and mentally
3. Refresh is creating firm boundaries and discipline in all your relationships
4. Rebirth is embodying all of it and radiating and attracting what you desire in your life

Heather Younger was born to advocate and communicate on behalf of others. I realized early on that many dreams and desires never happen unless we are courageous enough to ask for them consistently and in a compelling way.

I also know that some people never have the opportunity to share their voice and are just never invited to have a seat at the decision-making table. I was that person growing up as a kid in a family who shunned me because of my race.

My mission is to help organizations give their employees what they want so that those same organizations get what they want in the form of engagement and retention.

It has been my experience that organizations are more apt to make poor assumptions about what their employees want. They are screaming to be heard, cared for and want to have a say in what happens to them.

Mike and I spoke with Ryan Gottfredson, Ph.D today on what was a wonderful exploration.

“When we have an inward mindset, we see ourselves as more important than others. When we see ourselves as more important than others, we see others as objects. An outward mindset is when we see others being as important as ourselves” – 23.35

“Where is the focus when we have the desires to look good, be right, avoid problems and get ahead? On ourselves. If we are a leader and we are incentivised to look good, be right, avoid problems and get ahead, where are we focused as a leader, on the person we should be least focused on as a leader” – 31.00

Episode 119 - Truly Hue-Man Conversation by HumansFirst - Tanya Obeng, Brian Kelly, Rishita Jones & Kate Griffiths

Episode 119 - Truly Hue-Man Conversation by HumansFirst - Tanya Obeng, Brian Kelly, Rishita Jones & Kate Griffiths

We are pleased to share the second of our truly hue-man conversations which included Brian Kelly, Rishita Jones, Kate Griffiths and Tanya Obeng in conversation as we had a wide-ranging conversation taking in race, leadership, education,  self-leadership and so much more.

The reason that Tanya, Brian, Rihsita, and Kate took part in this conversation was:

- “Seeing colour, seeing diversity. Too often people say that they don’t see colour and I know it is meant on a human level, but it is really about connecting with people, seeing people’s differences, appreciating peoples differences and connecting with people on a soul level   and appreciating them for who they are” -  02.00 Tanya

- “I am excited about the opportunity to expand my perspective, to help us all expand our perspectives, to listen and learn from one another, so that we can come at creating change and taking purposeful action together, from a different place” - 02.55 Brian

- “I feel that up until now people have either been active when it comes to racism and D&I or they have been neutral. I want us to move from neutral to a more active stance. I’d like us to understand our own lens, our own frame of reference which shapes our thinking, our beliefs and our actions and I want to go deeper than that as we are all human beings with passions, dreams and desires. We all want to be heard, seen & felt” – 04.00 Rishita

- “On the back of a HumansFirst call, I love those calls, but I recognised that my soul was yearning for deeper connection which isn’t as easy to obtain when there are 40 or 50 or 60 people in a call so this really seemed to be heaven sent and when we are processing such complex set of emotions such as shame and all those other things that have come up recently, the way to heal is through more intimate gatherings where we can be ourselves and be open to learn” – 05.20 Kate

Episode 118- Brian Kelly, founder of Brian Kelly Leadership Coaching

“The whole dynamic of the workforce I was in (corporate) did not have this connection and that people mattered” – 01.20 -

“It’s not just having a job, its contributing to something that matters and when we have that meaning attached to how we contribute, there is a different impact and energy that we can create” – 02.15 -

“Action circles are about moving from insight to impact no matter what that is for you” – 06.50 - “We get to better, together” – 10.30 - “How do we get to connection if we don’t go through vulnerability?” – 11.30 -

“Getting back to who we authentically are rather than who we think we need to be or who others may want us to be. How do we remove the layers of life to get back to who we have always been” – 14.35 - “I get curious about what we are not hearing rather than what we are” – 25.50 - “What if we are all perfectly abnormal?” – 34.35

Episode 117 - A Truly Hue-Man Conversation with Raphael David, Consultant for law enforcement agencies, tactical training & ethical leadership & Dawna Jones, author, speaker & systems expert

Episode 117 - A Truly Hue-Man Conversation with Raphael David, Consultant for law enforcement agencies, tactical training & ethical leadership & Dawna Jones, author, speaker & systems expert

This was the first recorded truly hue-man conversation that has been created by myself and HumansFirst founder Mike Vacanti as we seek to develop regular, sustainable conversations around intentional inclusion by design, especially around systemic challenges such as that around race.

- “What bothers me a lot is that I hear, in business in particular, ‘we are rational decision makers.’ If that were the case, there would be no need for diversity quotas, no need for quotas around women, none of that stuff would exist. Let’s get real, get honest and get truthful into what are we really doing to insert bias into our decision-making and how can we collectively design things better so we remove it” - 04.45 Dawna

- “Inherent in coping with complexity is the requirement for diversity, diversity of perspectives, diversity of world view at a global level, and putting all the pixels of the picture into the environment” – 06.50 Dawna

- “Recognise that we need everybody’s views together, divergent as they are, so we can converge on something that benefits everyone including the life support systems that we require to survive” – 07.20 Dawna

- “America is forced with a situation right now that even when you have rules, if there is no way to enforce them, individuals will do what is expedient. I think without teeth, almost nothing matters when you put in writing as there will be other individuals that will not adhere” – 08.30 Raphael

- “I am hesitant to say this but all of my younger relatives are taught to have a one button push to get video & audio on their phone right away, it is just what we do” 15.35 Raphael

- “It never dawned on anyone that I would be doing anything but sexually assaulting this woman in the middle of a mall, at lunchtime. That is not uncommon to me.  - Raphael

- “What’s worse is that I have interviewed people and when my supervisors found out that I interviewed them, they would literally call that person and say “did he attempt to touch you?” and the person would go “no, why?” and I had to sit there and listen to those types of conversation. Dehumanisation really does not describe the feeling it really doesn’t” - 19.35 Raphael

Episode 115 - Deborah Abbott, facilitator of human-centered working and Rhys Thomas, founder of TruSELF coaching podcast

“Having the human at the centre of everything, for me, is the only way to go forward” -02.55 Deborah -

“Change out of necessity is good, change out of responsibility and accountability is better” – 16.25 - Rhys

“Does it really how to take that long to change? What if you just get the right people in the room and start from the beginning” – 28.00

Deborah Deborah and Rhys can be contacted via the following means: Deborah  - https://www.linkedin.com/in/theleadershiptrainer/ Rhys - https://www.linkedin.com/in/rhysthomastruself/ Deorah bio: Leadership facilitator and Champion for High-Performing Cultures My vision in life is to serve others by empowering them to step into action and transform the way they show up for the benefit of themselves and others. My passion to serve others stems from my two fundamental values: Growth and Connectedness. I honour these by accompanying others on their (learning) journey and helping them connect their dots. Yet no-one operates in a bubble. Like someone said to me once: Workplace culture is to people what water is to fish. Not long ago, I was a very hard-working and dedicated fish in a polluted organisational culture… Until I hit burnout: I was showing the very symptoms that I would speak about at my workshops, to enable leaders to recognize how toxic leadership and managerial styles can impact their people. Until Burnout is seen as a key organisational concern and a leadership responsibility, high-performing cultures will remain scarce in our Western culture. Rhys bio: I help Leaders and Business Owners reconnect with their truSELF to realise their true potential and optimise their teams performance through the principles of Conscious Leadership; Connection, Cultivation, Communication, Curiosity, Caring, Co-Creation and Community. Utilising EQ, SQ and Mindset we can work together to actualise your truSELF. By creating the right environment with incisive questioning, generative attention and the principles of deep listening we can identify and transform those limiting self-beliefs in to liberating ones and empower you with self-worth and self-awareness. Learning to focus on the present moment and to always lead with your heart by putting kindness, compassion and gratitude at the forefront of everything you do lifts you and those around you. By committing to a practice of daily personal development, becoming aligned with your core values, unlocking your superpowers and learning to always take intentional action, you will soon be achieving your true purpose! That is when you are one with your truSELF.

Episode 113 - Pauline Crawford, CEO of Corporate Heart International

Episode 113 - Pauline Crawford, CEO of Corporate Heart International

- “There is something wonderful about the quietness at the moment. I am actually feeling really positive about the future as we were in desperate need of some kind of shock, some kind of jolt. It is a pandemic pause and we need pandemic patience and passion. I know that the world can be a better place than it was”

- “The challenge I believe (as we emerge post-crisis) is that we all have a different view of what that might be, and that is what we have to explore”

- “You are not leading to control; you are leading to manage the music. There is a give and take, a questioning listening and questioning and contribution”

- “As soon as I started thinking I will go wrong I went wrong”

- “One of my dreams is to ask different groups ‘what is your imagined magic-wand future with no conditions to now or the past?’” – 39.10

Episode 112, Purdeep Sangha, Author, Coach & Strategist For Men In Business

Episode 112, Purdeep Sangha, Author, Coach & Strategist For Men In Business

- “I was doing very well on paper, I had it all, had the cushy job making good money travelling the world, had all the perks that came along with it, but I just wasn’t happy with life, I wasn’t fulfilled with life, I felt like I was going through the motions” – 1.40

- “Today I help men in business not only transform their lives, but also their businesses as well” - 04.20

- “Men everywhere are looking for leadership.   When men step up that is when things will change” – 07.10

- “A lot of times men identify themselves with what they have, their position, their business and for a lot of men that has been wiped out and it has been wiped out overnight and that is testing who they truly are, their identity” – 16.50

- “My kids teach me a very tough lesson on occasion. They will ask do you care about your work more than you care about us?“ – 19.15

- “There are two parts to that. Initially, being able to get guys to drop their shield early on in the first couple of conversations is the toughest part. Later on, there is another realisation, that’s almost the spiritual realisation. The first is more logical, the second is more spiritual. They are more than a bag of skin and bones; they are a source of energy” – 34.20

- “The topic of power is so misconstrued; power is not a bad word. It is not about control, it is about being that source of energy that they (men) need to live a fulfilling live. It can also be in the feminine state to connect with other people, put their guards down, to be vulnerable” – 35.35

Episode 111 - Roz Savage, Author of the 'Gifts of Solitude,' motivational speaker and 4 x Guinness record world record holder

Episode 111 - Roz Savage, Author of the 'Gifts of Solitude,' motivational speaker and 4 x Guinness record world record holder

“There was a lot of surrender to what is, a need to refocus on the things that I could control like just showing up and to reframe the situation as I couldn’t change reality, but I can change my attitude to it” – 06.45

- “When you can't change what is happening around you, then the last power left to us is to choose our attitude (ref: Victor Frankl)” – 08.35

- “The beauty of curiosity is that it helps us be less attached to any particular outcome”

– 12.40 - “Think about what we want to carry forward. Which pieces of luggage can we put down and leave behind? What are the values that we really want to embody going forward, both individually and collectively“ – 14.15

- “I am curious about not just the abstract values, but the financial value that we put on things might get shaken up going forward and I hope that we take these opportunities and don’t go back to the same old, same old” - 21.20

- “I like the phrase; strong opinions, lightly held” – 25.55 -

“it is important to have beliefs, but also to know that we choose those beliefs and not to mistake them for truth” – 26.05 Roz can be found via the following means:

Web - https://www.thegiftsofsolitude.org/

LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/rozsavage/

Bio: Roz Savage is the first (and so far only) woman to row solo across the world’s “Big Three” oceans: Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian. She holds four Guinness World Records, and was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to fundraising and the environment. It was an unexpected career move for a former management consultant who doesn’t particularly enjoy exercise. She was inspired to brave the oceans when she realised two things: 1) we are all capable of much more than we tend to believe we are, and 2) we need to make some changes if we're going to live healthy lives on a thriving planet. So she used her voyages to expand her own limits, and to promote sustainable living. She now writes, speaks, and lectures on sustainability, courage, resilience, and change.

Episode 110 - Joanne Lockwood, Founder & CEO of SEE Change Happen, keynote speaker and founder of TruInclusion

Mike and I had a wonderful conversation with inclusion specialist Jo Lockwood.

- “I decided about three and a bit years ago that I needed to make a change, so I not only made a change of career, I also took the opportunity to gender transition at the same point. I came out of that with a passion for inclusion, belonging and trying to make the world a better place” – 2.10

- “As I got to the world around the HR and D&I space, I realised that it is not just about me or people like me, it is about everybody. Everybody has a need for greater belonging, to create an environment where everybody can thrive. I have expanded my thinking to be inclusive of all people” – 3.10

- “Show your workings out. If you just show your answer and its wrong, you have no evidence of how you got there. Don’t just tell me what you think, tell me how you got to the point of what you think” – 28.30

- “Rather than have D&I as a bolt-on, I wanted to turn it on its head and put inclusion at the heart and everything else bolting into that. Everything should have an inclusion lens” – 30.10

Episode 109 - Doug Kirkpatrick, US partner, NuFocus Strategic Group, author, keynote speaker and self-management expert

Episode 109 - Doug Kirkpatrick, US partner, NuFocus Strategic Group, author, keynote speaker and self-management expert

I loved this conversation with Doug Kirkpatrick as we explore deeply human, self-management organisations and practices. - “Working with our founder (during 1980s) we had some reservations about the organisation structure because we had kind of defaulted to the traditional command and control organisational structure that every other company used” – 02.10 -

“We started collecting observations. One of the observations was that people drive into the parking lot, park their car and come into work. We realised that every one of these individuals is a manager already in his or her own personal life so every one of those individuals is making gigantic life-altering decisions on their own without a boss. Their deciding who to date, who to marry, what to do for a living whether to take out a mortgage or have kids or whatever” – 03.20 -

“I am adding zero value to this process, in fact it is negative value because there is an opportunity cost associated with the time and effort involved so he (managing partner) came down the hall and dropped the checks off on my desk” – 04.50 -

“The Morningstar team principles essentially boiled down to two very simple things. First, human beings should not use force or coercion against other human beings. The second principle is that people should keep the commitments they make to each other” – 07.25 - “We basically changed the cost structure of our entire industry at that moment and we did it without ever deviating from our two principles; don’t use force and keep commitments. We became the largest tomato processor in the world (Morningstar)” – 09.45 Bio: As a partner in NuFocus Strategic Group, I now speak and consult on self-management around the world. I also share the message of organizational innovation through my best-selling books ("Beyond Empowerment" + "From Hierarchy to High Performance"), my latest book with Forbes, "The No-Limits Enterprise", TEDx and numerous articles and posts. Episode 105 - Saki Arkoudopoulos, Global Portfolio & Program Manager

Episode 105 - Saki Arkoudopoulos, Global Portfolio & Program Manager

Saki is a wonderful high-energy, people-centered human.  We meander through self-awareness, culture, navigating the current crisis, remote work and so much more.   - “The division I am working in is open to new ways of working, experimenting with ways of working and I love it as it brings people much closer together, it diminishes team boundaries artificial boundaries and in the end we all have a common call and need to work towards a common goal” – 04.05 - “What you are seeing right now is that we are all much more connected and need each other much more than we actually think. Nobody can operate on an island nowadays” – 05.05 - “I hate politics (at work) It makes you lose speed; it makes you focus on completely different stuff to execution” - 06.00 - “I think is boils down to self-awareness, knowing your own strengths and weaknesses” – 07.00 - “I am really hoping that this can be a reset for people. E.g if I was commuting 5 hours per day, now I can spend that 5 hours per day with my kids. I was making a lot of money, now I am making zero, was that money really worth it or is there something else that I really wanted to do but did not take advantage of?”- 12.10 - “We always thought that we were not ready for it (homeschooling) until you are forced to actually do it” – 12.20 - “Sometimes it enough to just sit. We have forgotten the art of just wandering, of doing nothing and just being in the moment” – 18.25 - “I get that there a lot to be said for being busy, but as long as we realise that they are all excuses and if you want to do something, you need to hold yourself accountable” – 21.25 - “There is a place for fear, but it should not paralyse you. Look neutral at whatever the facts are” – 32.10 Saki is active on LinkedIn and can be founder here -> https://www.linkedin.com/in/saki-arkoudopoulos/ Bio: My ambition is to positively influence the way of working and culture through my actions, results and words.

I facilitate and serve my team members and love creating a densely connected environment that stimulates true teamwork across artificial borders, bridging the gap between departments and/or the business. I love guiding teams to successful delivery of their work while ensuring excellent customer satisfaction and involvement. Fast-growing organizations with a learning and continuous improvement culture energize me tremendously and “when can we start” is an expression I often use. I’m an activator at heart and I’m a big believer of continuous and relentless (self)improvement while having a kaizen mentality. I love actively and respectfully challenging people when I notice fixed mindsets around any topic, on any level. I do this not to provoke, but to accelerate change. While I have a masters in Computer Science, I stay within my professional lane, not assuming to be nor playing a technical champion.

I just loved this conversation with the inspiring Rina Goldenerg Lynch.  Pragmatic, hopeful and challenging of the status quo, Rina has offered some of the most inclusive insight around the inclusion agenda I have come across so far.

- “I realised that a lot of people around me have lots and lots to offer, yet the organisation wasn’t equipped with identifying what that extra value was that the individuals have to offer, therefore were not able to tap into it” – 01.20

- “Every disaster, if you will, has a silver lining. It absolutely questions the structure and the process that we adhere to as humans today, as a society today, and that is hopefully what we are starting to question and recognise that there is so much more we could be doing to unleash the human” - 13.45

- “One of the things that I have learned is people are far more complicated than we give them credit for. We are so much deeper than we think we are” – 30.30

- “It is no longer enough to have the smartest person doing the job, if that smartest person looks the like person right next to them and the person right next to them” – 03.20

- “I did notice that they (people performing a role) had a lot more to contribute and I felt like I had a lot more to contribute than what was being asked of me” – 07.10

- “Structure yes, but let’s loosen it up, lets shake up the framework and lets introduce a little bit of ‘flying by the seat of your pants’ and do things that we are not used to or are not comfortable with” – 17.30

Bio:

Rina Goldenberg Lynch, Gender Parity Advocate, Founder & CEO, has 20 years of experience as a lawyer. Having started her legal career in Washington DC, she then worked as a banking lawyer with Clifford Chance LLP in London and as a Director in the legal department of ING Bank London. During her career, Rina observed that most organisations had a dominant culture which required - directly or indirectly - every person to adapt. As a result, leaders often failed to realise the full potential of their colleagues, overlooking their colleagues' individual differences as strengths, leaving untapped much talent, dedication and commitment.

Having experienced this first-hand and learning how to break the corporate mould, Rina developed a passion for endowing her experience and knowledge onto other women, helping them attain sustainable career satisfaction by contributing fully and authentically. Rina mentored many women to break through their own limiting beliefs and to become agents of change for other women and colleagues. Separately,

Rina also began to help her own employer to realise women's untapped contribution by modelling how to value difference and turn it into a useful resource for the business. This was the catalyst behind Voice At The Table. The consultancy helps organisations succeed by learning how to appreciate and harness diversity of thought.

Episode 102 - Tom Ven Der Lubbe, Viisionair & Co-Founder of Viisi

Episode 102 - Tom Ven Der Lubbe, Viisionair & Co-Founder of Viisi

What a way for the first collaborative podcast to lift off.

Mike Vacanti and I had the pleasure of hosting a conversation with Viisi co-founder Tom Van Der Lubbe.  We meandered across such a wide range of topics including culture, self-management, leadership, vulnerability, innovation, talent and so much more.

Some of the key insights include:

- “I wanted to become a diplomat, but I found out pretty quickly that I am not that diplomatic” – 01.40

- “We became entrepreneurs by accident after our subsidiary was closed down” – 02.20

- “We had more or less a recession scenario in place. We just had to take out our crisis scenario from the past” – 04.05

- “During normal times we always have a clear hierarchy. It starts with purpose. The business is not meant to maximise profit, but it should be a multi-stakeholder approach” – 05.50

- “On top of purpose, we want to change the financial sector. It should become more sustainable, more long-term orientated etc We always had a second purpose which was to create a better work environment, putting people first” – 06.00

- “We always have a ‘virtual bench.’ We were always in talks with people that we did not need at that moment, but now is a great time to activate this as we navigate the crisis” – 35.00

- “What I like is no bosses and that everybody is a leader. if you try and create an environment where people feel safe, in their teams, people will all, in the end, become leaders as they act in normal life as well” – 41.25

- “Try to take all the financial bonuses and incentives out of it so people can be vulnerable. Normally you can’t be vulnerable because it has a negative effect on your own salary or bonus or on the salary and bonus of your team” - 42.10

Episode 101 - Ian Braid, MD of DOCIAsport Ltd

Episode 101 - Ian Braid, MD of DOCIAsport Ltd

I enjoyed this really insightful and impactful conversation with Ian Braid, founder of DOCIAsport.

We meandered through mental health, vulnerability, self-awareness and so much more with some of the key insights being:

- “Who’s looking after the people looking after the people?” – 03.35

- “A lesson I had to learn the hard way was that duty of care belongs to the individual first and foremost” - 05.50

- “I’m making it up as I go along. When I set up DOCIA Sport I was still poorly. If I had set it up when I was well, I would have had a 5-year plan, umpteen KPIs, I’d have blinkers on. Because I didn’t have the blinkers on, I have had opportunities and met different people that I otherwise would not have met” – 08.35

- “I am (now) more self-aware and therefore feel that I can make better intuitive decisions, if it feels right” – 15.25

- “When you talk about your vulnerability it gives people, at worst, permission to themselves to think more deeply about their own stuff and at best to engage in a conversation” – 21.55

- “Is it (role modelling vulnerability) courageous, is it brave I don’t know, but it feels intuitively right” 22.20

Ian can be contacted via the following means:

LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/ian-braid-fmhc-484238/

Twitter - https://twitter.com/Imbraid

Bio:

Ian has brought together his significant experience in sport and his passion for helping others under the umbrella of DOCIAsport the company he founded in 2017. He brings a refreshing and independent view to all aspects of duty of care in sport from the perspective of coaches, officials, athletes, administrators and the sector itself. Ian is acknowledged as a trusted leader whose opinions are widely sought after in sport, higher education, government and business.  He is recognised as a champion of mental health education and has given acclaimed keynote presentations throughout the UK. These include a guest lecture at Edge Hill University, a partner in mental health in sport.

His vision as CEO of the British Athletes Commission led to the sector strengthening the support offered to vulnerable adults in sport. He also played a key role in the DCMS review of duty of care in sport assisting Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson. These became the platform for Ian to deliver sustainable positive change in sport, mental health provision and for the next generation of sport leaders applying his values, skills and experience.

Episode 99 - John Featherby, Founder of Shoremount and a founding B Corp

I really enjoyed this conversation with John Featherby who is a founding UK B Corp and speaks so eloquently and with such clarity about the opportunity that ay in front of us to become more humane, people-centric orgs that serve people, planet and profit. Some of the key reflections for me included: -

“I spend as much time as I can in the countryside. I get most of my peace and my thinking when connected to natural landscapes” – 01.00 - “Problem-solving can only iterate the current reality, you can’t launch yourself into a new reality by just fixing what’s current. You have to create something new” – 27.05 -

“They (children) are not asked to solve problems. What would the system look like if every child in school was being asked to solve problems, real problems that the adults are trying to deal with. That creates a totally different society” – 35.05 -

“I did have some clarity young. For the most part, whilst you may have that clarity, it doesn’t mean that there is a group of people willing to listen” – 04.00 -

“When we talk about change it always starts with some kind of death, some kind of price is paid for change at the start” - 05.20 - “Change the people, change the planet rather than the other way around. Ultimately this is a heart question” – 11.40 -

“Organisations measure and engage with the physical stuff that’s easy to see, but actually we are so much more than the physical representation of ourselves” - 24.15

Episode 98 - Renee Smith, Founder and CEO of A Human Workplace

I really enjoyed this conversation with Renee Smith who opens our conversation with one of the most vulnerable personal stories of vulnerability shared on this podcast so far.

Renee really does role-model the change she wants to see in the world, bringing the importance of love to the workplace, however, people wish to name or adopt that.  We also discuss leadership, culture, vulnerability, courage and much more. Some key highlights include: -

“We want to contribute; we want to matter. We want to be cared about ourselves. Of course love belongs at work and when we are in a condition when we feel love, we give and do and be our very best” – 09.20 -

“You are a good investment. Invest in yourself. I was worthy of investing in” – 11.45 -

“We need to be creating an environment where you stop, and we turn and we face someone to truly listen to them,  and we look them in the eye and we turn away from our devices and our computer and we hear them.” – 36.10 -

“Tell me a story about a time when you felt afraid at work and tell me a story about a time when you felt loved or any version of that at work?” – 38.00

Episode 97, Arlene Mendoza - Re-imagining life and Sr Innovation Program Manager @ Alluma

I was moved during this conversation with Arlene.  She epitomises humanity and oozes a desire to leave the planet and people in a better place than which she found them. We discuss human-centered design, innovation, her sabbatical, #HumansFirst, community, awareness and so much more.

Some of the key highlights for me include:

- “I’ve seen how the business idea, developed in isolation, iterated, but not always with the information of the user with that information of the user coming late in the game. I love the human-centred philosophy which flips that”

– 05.55 - “Start by listening to those that will be impacted. Understand that piece first without your assumptions and biases”

– 07.25 - “why create in isolation, why not create by having input and feedback from the people that are going to actually experience whatever that output is”

-  12.30 “I love approaching problems from this consideration of all of the others. I think that human-centred design accounts for that other piece” – 14.10

- “What inspires me is not just the human-centred design approach, but the intersection of public policy, legislation and date”

– 14.25 - “The unknown felt really uncomfortable because it was so ambiguous” – 21.55

Episode 96 - Jeff Ikler of Quetico Leadership Coaching & Consulting and Kirsten Richert of Richert Innovation Consulting

Episode 96 - Jeff Ikler of Quetico Leadership Coaching & Consulting and Kirsten Richert of Richert Innovation Consulting

I thoroughly enjoyed my first 3-way conversation on this platform and it really added some extra value.

We discuss education, innovation, leadership, culture, language, purpose and so much more.  Please find some of the key highlights as follows:

- “One of the central, underlying themes of our book is the balance between smart and healthy. Smart is what we typically have a lot of training in. Yet much of our enjoyment, success and ability to pull off those things on the smart side, are really on the healthy side” – 06.45

- “What if you focussed 95% of your time on the people that you are leading and only 5% on the work itself, what would that look like”- 08.40

- “We work with leaders on the idea of having staff take greater ownership, that leaders don’t have to decide everything. Leading is me helping to develop you as a thinker and a future leader” – 12.50

- “If the leader jumps in too soon. If we hear from the leader too quickly around the table, people are going to pull back and say ‘why do I need to counter Jim, this is how he feels.’ – 17.50

- “If you want to stop a lot of people from emotional attachment to an organisation, talk about double digit growth. Over time her message changed to ‘we do well by doing good’” – 24.00

- “It’s a mistaken belief that as a leader you have to make decision” – 27.20

-  “It’s not just about smarts, its also about healthy. You really need both in order make productive change happen” – 38.50

Bios:

Episode 95 - Toby Mildon, founder of Mildon, D&I expert, & author of Inclusive Growth

I absolutely loved this conversation with Inclusion Architect and export Toby Mildon.

In what was a hopeful, constructive and forward-looking conversation, we touched on inclusion, belonging, awareness, culture, leadership and so much more.

Some key insights included:

- “Diversity includes everybody. We need to make sure that everybody, every single person, is included and taken on the journey because it is only when businesses reflect the communities in which they’re based and the talent that’s around them, and the communities in which they serve, that they become high-performing businesses” – 03.10

“Sometimes I like to be sarcastic by saying that I will write the business case for you (D&I) when you write the business case why we should hire non-disabled people” - 09.45

“My recommendation is to use reverse mentoring with someone from a different background. Lean back, lean forward and step in” – 38.30

- “What three talking points do you need to give to your Chief Executive so that they are able to talk confidently from a podium about why diversity & inclusion is important to the organisation” – 04.40

- “(D&I) The business case is that it is the right thing to, we are talking about human rights. We should be creating businesses that enable anybody to work in the business regardless of their background so that they can come and contribute their best work so that the business thrives” – 09.00

- “My tip to anyone that wants to progress D&I in their organisation is to find out what language sticks within the business and speak that language in order to get your message across” – 12.00

- “The reason why I like co-creation is because so many organisations when they implement D&I it’s usually done from the HR department, done to people in the organisation, rather than down with” – 15.20

“Once I surrender to healing completely, I slowly started to see progress happen.” – 05.15 -

“We see a massive collapse when we look around. Breakdown after breakdown of financial systems, human system, psychological systems, social systems. There is a lot of breakdown going in our world right now” – 07.13

“Start to explore with curiosity your inner emotional landscape. When we start doing that on a more regular basis there’s a whole new world that starts to unfold” - 22.20

“It is the reality of things that the way in which business is designed is, in most cases, for destruction. So how can we turn towards the intelligence of nature” – 29.30

“You get presented with life as a big competition (at school/as kids) and you need to win the race, if not you fall behind, and all sorts of bad things will happen to you. We have not created a life where we are celebrating our differences” – 34.30

Episode 93 - David Marquet, International speaker & author of 'Leadership is Language'

Episode 93 - David Marquet, International speaker & author of 'Leadership is Language'

I absolutely loved this conversation with David who is the first person to come back onto the Value through Vulnerability for a 2nd time.

Please fond as follows some of the rich insights and their timings in the podcast:

- “The realisation I had was all of my leadership training was about telling people what to do; telling them nicely, telling them precisely, telling them so they thought it was there idea, but fundamentally about telling people what to do” – 02.45

- “First of all, I had to get away from this idea that I was controlling other peoples behaviour. We live in a world where we think that the way to have success in your job, is to get other people to do stuff” – 05.20

“I think there is a real limitation here which is they are only going to be as good as you, they are only going to be as proactive as you, and they’re not going to give that discretionary effort” - 05.40

- “just imagine if you needed to spend zero time managing people. You need to coordinate people, their efforts should to be coordinated, but what if you didn’t have to manage any of them, they just managed themselves.” – 07.05

- “It’s good people, trying to do the right thing, but with the wrong playbook of the industrial, playbook” – 19.10

David can be contacted via the followings means:

Bio:

Student of leadership and organizational design, former nuclear submarine commander,

Author of Amazon #1 Best Seller: Turn the Ship Around!, Leadership is Language,

and The Turn the Ship Around! Workbook, and one of Inc. Magazine’s Top 100

Leadership Speakers.

David Marquet imagines a workplace where everyone engages and contributes their full intellectual capacity, a place where people are healthier and happier because they have more control over their work–a place where everyone is a leader.

A 1981 U.S. Naval Academy graduate, Captain Marquet served in the U.S. submarine force for 28 years. After being assigned to command the nuclear powered submarine USS Santa Fe–then ranked last in retention and operational standing–he realized the traditional leadership approach of “take control, give orders,” wouldn’t work.  He “turned the ship around” by treating the crew as leaders, not followers, and giving control, not taking control. This approach took the Santa Fe from “worst to first,” achieving the highest retention and operational standings in the navy.

After Captain Marquet’s departure, the Santa Fe continued to win awards and promoted a disproportionate number of officers and enlisted men to leadership positions, including ten subsequent submarine captains. Stephen R. Covey said it was the most empowering organization he’d ever seen and wrote about Captain Marquet’s leadership practices in his book, The 8th Habit.

Some of Brooke's key insights can be found as followed: -

“In my early 20s nobody was talking about purpose, but I still felt like I needed to know what I’m doing and how it’s helping others instead of just looking at my daily tasks” – 01.45 -

“One thing that CEOs think that purpose is a good thing, but they never think it can also drive their numbers. They still don’t connect the dots” – 10.55 -

“One of my goals and purpose is to increase awareness around this in my community. We want to have more conversations around this, but turning these conversations into execution too” – 15.30 -

“The ones that have the most bureaucracy, the ones that have so much hierarchy are not nimble enough, they’re not flexible enough, they’re not agile enough to be going through all these changes” – 23.45 -

“When you tie what you do on a daily basis to something bigger, it makes a huge shift in peoples minds” – 25.00 -

Epsiode 91 - Sara Nanayakkara, founder of Nth Level Consulting limited & Certified Dare to Lead™ Facilitator

This is one of my favourite conversations EVER!  Sara is a certified #DaretoLead facilitator having trained with Brene Brown after passing a rigorous application process.

We discuss in detail vulnerability, shame, empathy, leadership, privilege, courage, risk and so much more.

Some example insights shared by Sara include:

- “It was a massive risk because the training dates are set for the year. There was huge risk if I got it, there was huge risk financially” – 05.10

- “Why is it important? When there is no courage in an organisation, when courage is absent, we’re able to identify classic behaviours that show up like back-channelling, like not giving feedback, like not having difficult conversations, lack of creativity, lack of innovation, lack of risk” – 08.20

“We can’t be courageous, we can’t be brave, without vulnerability. Why should we do it? The risks of not doing it are far, far too great” - 08.25

“I didn’t realise the extent to which it would change myself in doing the work” 17.25
