The Father- Pt. 3- The Prodigal Son Mini-Series
Our final episode of the prodigal son mini-series closes with our last character, the Father. I have to admit that I haven't spent much time thinking about the Father beyond the thought that he seemed a little foolish to welcome back his son with open arms. Wouldn't discipline have been more fitting? His part seems so small, but I'm sure that I'll have a brand new inspired way of looking at the Father that I will carry with me on my journey after this conversation. I am grateful to have back with me Jennifer Hayes. I have so enjoyed digging into these two brothers' characteristics and unraveling all the symbolism that we today can connect to our own lives. I've really gobbled up looking into the younger brother as an example of extravagance gone wrong, as well as the vast lack of extravagance in the older brother and how both lead to a wasteland. Our story takes place in Luke 15:11-32 We also make reference to 1 Corinthians 4:15. Prodigal pt.2
Welcome back with me, Jennifer Hayes.  Jennifer has graciously shared some of her notes with us.  Please enjoy this comparison sheet between the two brothers to help enhance your own study. The story we are discussing takes place in Luke  Younger Brother: Grace is owed doesn't understand the value of his family position Extravagant with himself no personal standard no moral/material restraint finds himself in an environmental wasteland *moral poverty Older Brother: Grace is earned doesn't understand the nature of his family position extravagant with no one (not even himself) no personal kindness/ is in moral/material bondage (too much restraint) Is in an internal/spiritual wasteland *spiritual poverty. Blessed are the poor in Spirit for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven--Inheritance!! Finding Your Worth
Inside today's Podcast, I have with me, Jennifer Riales.  She is a freelance writer for a local magazine called The Roanoker. She's been blogging for almost three years at Pen, Paper, Coffee because all you need is a cup of coffee and some paper and pen.  She currently lives in Roanoke, Virginia with her husband, son, two cats, and their dog.  We all yearn to fit in, to belong.  Perhaps it started on the playground in elementary school, but the desire still exists in our daily lives.  Some are aware of this desire to belong and have a healthy grasp on it and some live with some sort of self-esteem issue or disorder?  Perhaps the desire to belong has transformed into an addiction, chronic pain, the possibilities are endless. We all want to belong, and we all do belong to our creator.  He will always have his arms open, waiting for you to find that belonging in Him. Who's Standards Are You Following?
Inside today's podcast, I have with me Ashley Price. She is a Homemaking and Homeschool Expert who helps Christian moms balance running their home, strengthening their marriage, supporting their kids without sacrificing their sanity and me-time. She's been credited with creating the Christian Mom’s Netflix with her signature monthly membership, Prudent Homemaker. Her journey began in 2014 when a missionary knocked on my door and introduced her to Christ. It was a crazy ride to go from, let’s call it worldly, to a Christian homemaker. She currently lives in the woods of South Georgia with her husband, two boys, and two black labs (that think they are lap dogs). In this episode, we discuss God's standards vs. the world's standards. Honestly, the boldness of this topic may offend you, but it's always important to share the truth for the sake of love. Ashley has created a special link just for us!  Use the link below to access her homemaker program with over 100 recorded trainings.  Do your feathers ruffle when you hear the term submissive? Hello friends! In today’s bonus episode, I’m bringing you something new, but it won’t be new for long, as I intend to share these with you every month. Support by clicking here! Today I will be sharing a sample from my current new work in progress, a brand new book called The Relevant Old Testament. I’ve been sampling it out to readers and so far they are eating it up. I could not be happier about this. I’m so glad they are enjoying it and benefitting from what they read. Marilyn said, “The way you can put it in today’s language really does connect the old testament to us now. God is certainly giving deep understanding and you communicate it so well. This would be a great daily devotional book that gives encouragement... especially when I life is hard now for so many and so many different ways!” Sharon said, “Oh girl! This is good. I like the intro because it draws you to want to read more. Getting Started, is a great transition from your intro. I appreciate the fact you clarify in the being believer and follower, pure gold! It is sad to see so many believers, but not followers. I am excited to get the next sample.” Marilyn and Sharon, I thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to give these samples a read. Today dear listener, I’m going to share with you the first 2 samples of this book. Message me if you’d like to send some feedback my way! I welcome you warmly to the month of November and invite you to participate in my gratitude giveaway. I’ll throw in an extra entry for you if what you're grateful for is unique and or thoughtful. We’ve been through a lot these past few months and I think a dose of gratitude would do the soul good. I personally like to start my gratitude practice with the small and mundane and work my way up to the awesome and spectacular. It’s a lot of fun, so I hope you’ll give it a try. We have a good God, a phenomenal creator, so it’s easy to find something to thank Him for. Inside today’s podcast, I have with me, Simcha Melling. She is a wife, full-time working mom of three, writer, and a newly enrolled college student. She was a stay-at-home mom for over a decade and a homeschool teacher for five years. She writes to encourage and inspire others to choose joy and faith through the mundane and heartache in life. In her spare time, she enjoys reading inspirational fiction and self-improvement books, binge watching Netflix, and consuming way too much social media. She and her family live on acreage, in a small Missouri town outside Kansas City, with their German Shepherd mix dog, gray tabby cat, and a fluctuating number of chickens. How Comparison is Toxic to Your Soul
Inside today’s Podcast, I have with me Richella Parham.  She is a wife, mother, writer, and author of the award-winning book, Mythical Me. I’m so blessed to have her here today because I know she has a lot of great encouragement and practical application for us on how to stop the habit of comparison. Comparison is usually a very big component of perfectionism. It’s that constant evaluation of ourselves against the standards of this world. Are we measuring up? Can we try harder? Will we ever be enough? Believe it or not, these thoughts and questions we ask ourselves hinder us in our God-given purpose. We live less than we were created for while attempting to be more. I love this episode so much.  The conversation is rich with beauty and truth. More about Richella: Richella J. Parham is a speaker and author of the award-winning book Mythical Me: Finding Freedom from Constant Comparison. She serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of Renovaré, a Christian spiritual formation ministry. With a birthmark covering more than a third of her body, Richella struggled from her earliest days with feeling that she never measured up. She now applies her experience and training to help others break free from the trap of constant comparison, clearing a path for struggling Christians to take hold of a life of confidence, compassion, and community. Is it ok to Procrastinate?
Inside today’s podcast, I have with me, Melissa Schneider. She’s a medical records paralegal by day and enjoys reading, writing, sketching, cooking and exercising when she's not at work.  Melissa writes about loss. She says, "My writing journey this last year has deepened, due to a season of waiting. I am writing a devotional/book of reflections about being in the dark and the hope in Christ that pulls me out. I am also writing a book about my journey through Infertility and being childless in the Christian Community. What an opportunity for me to learn how to walk in grace! I have just secured a small assignment to begin writing the stories of women who have come through trauma and addiction and are experiencing love and grace through healing." Today we discuss, procrastination and how when paired with perfectionism it can be an unwise choice.  We also discuss the painful topic of infertility along with writing, and God's plan for our life. MORE- Bonus episode 1.3
The world will always tell us we need more. We need to have more. We need to be more. We need to achieve more. And if we don’t become more, we have failed. The church has told us that we need to be more too. We need to be like Jesus; perfect. "It's not possible but you have to try." We need to be righteous. We need to be different than we are now. And if we don't become like Jesus, most likely we'll be turned away at the gate.  Starting September 18th you can even receive ADDED support to this journey of deepening your faith in practical ways.  So what do you think, are you in???  Cool, click the link in my bio and select truth and tools.  If you're the type of person where more details are better go ahead  click here www.bodysoulandmind.info Other Resources: You Don't Have To Be Perfect by Vanessa Luu Truth and Tools Workbook and support group.

Living In The Unexpected
Inside today's podcast, I have with me Mabry Gardner.  It’s difficult and very stressful to live in a state where nothing is certain, when you don’t know whether to go left or right, up or down. My guest today shares some of her journey of graduating from college and having all her plans change in a matter of a few days. I found such courage and inspiration from talking with Mabry.  She is proof that when you open yourself up to the Holy Spirit He moves.  If Mabry had stayed in her comfort zone she wouldn't be where she is today! Mabry is a social worker and aspiring public speaker living in Northwest Arkansas with her 5 year old cat Ellis. She is passionate about building healthy community, celebrating small victories and trying to find a dance break in everyday. You can find her at www.mabrygardner.com or @mabrydoesthings on Instagram. The Power Of Abiding
Inside today’s Podcast I have with me Anna Grist. She is a Wife, Mother, and freelance graphic designer. She enjoys spending her “extra” time hiking, writing, reading, painting, and photography! I have almost all of that on my list of enjoyments as well! Anna lives in a tiny hamlet in southern Alberta, right smack next to the Rockies, about an hour west of Calgary. Most of her life she’s expressed herself through visual art, but has renewed her love of the written word and is learning how to take captive the scattered thoughts that she lets slip too many times and put them down on a page instead.  She writes regularly for her blog at serendipimoosetracks.com and also writes and does the layout and design for Paper&String, a monthly online care package from Lisa-Jo Baker, Christie Purifoy, and Elrena Evans, a la the Maplehurst Black Barn. She also designs the layout for the High Country News, a local newspaper. She and her husband have two children, and twin cats Quill & Ink. In her spare time she enjoys hiking in nearby Kananaskis Country, Canmore, and Banff, with bear spray handy, and reads like a fish as much as she can. Lies From The World-Bonus**1.1
Welcome to Bonus Episode #1-Lies from the world When referencing the world I don’t actually mean God’s creation, I mean it like Paul meant it in Romans 12:2. The World was created by God, and it was perfect, but then sin entered it and it’s never been the same. So to get the context correct the world could be synonymous with “the flesh” or just plain sin. Galatians 5:17 says, “For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.” ESV This is the struggle we feel when we know Jesus. Make no mistake, whether you know Jesus or not you will struggle in this life, but when you choose to follow Him you begin to see these struggles in black and white, in flesh and in spirit. The world; the flesh; sin, lies to us to keep us in it. The flesh wants us to live from the flesh because the flesh is also of the enemy. Romans 8:7-8 says, “Because the mindset on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.” NASB To give you a real-life relatable example let’s talk about the phrase, You do You, which is very current in our culture today. I like it, honestly, but without the truth backing it up it just doesn’t work. The lie around this statement, you do you, is that we can somehow manage everyone’s feelings and personalities so that we are all at peace. This won’t ever work. I wish people would figure this out and stop wasting their energy. “Well, what are you saying Vanessa? Are we not supposed to not care, not even try?” I’m so glad you asked. ☺️ Find your identity in Christ alone and then abide with Him every day. This way you get to be exactly who you were made to be AND if people don’t like you that’s okay, because your creator LOVES you. He cherishes you, He is delighted by you. Sounds amazing right? So is it really that easy? Yes and no. Yes because when you rest in your identity in Christ you are home and you are living in truth. No, because you actually still live in the earth and so you’ll have to bat away lies like this for the rest of your life. 🤷‍♀️. Is it worth it?? Yes. Living in Truth is 1,000x’s better than going along with the deception that the world has to offer. Romans says, 8:13 “For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” Recognizing the lies of the flesh is so important because if you don’t recognize the lies your reality consists of living in them! I might not know you personally but I can guess that you’d rather actually live in truth than just simulate your life here on earth. Here’s the good news, you don’t have to figure this all out on your own! God wants to work it out with you! He wants to guide you and Keep you in his care! If this all sounds great but you’re not really sure how to work things out with God then I want to help. In section 2 of my Truth and Tools workbook I share practical application steps to help you draw near to God and I’m actually going to share the full section with you right now! So grab a pen and a piece of paper (or open up a fresh word document and lets do this!) Your sample today was from Section 2 of the Truth and Tools Workbook: Don't Let Fear Stop You Every section in this workbook was created to get you closer to God and provides practical application steps in each section. What you can expect as you go through this workbook is more time in God’s Word as you gain more understanding and clarity for the plans He has created for you. Don't Let Fear Stop You
The title of today’s episode, Don’t Let Fear Stop You, is one from my very own workbook, Truth and Tools- Practical Applications rooted in scripture to help you live in truth. It also makes a great companion to my first book, You Don’t Have to Be Perfect.   My guest, Emily PIerite share's how perfectionism was causing stress in her life and stealing her joy. Emily is a former high school English teacher and Teacher Leader for the State of Louisiana. She is a wife, a homemaker, and Women’s Fiction author. One Woman Can Change The World
Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Ronne Rock. She is a professional writer and author of One Woman Can Change The World. She keeps herself busy traveling globally for her Orphan Outreach while using her creative talents.  (This episode was originally titled, Does God Require Perfection, and we do discuss that, but the bulk of the contents is more about Ronne's book, One Woman Can Change The World.) We discuss so many important topics, such as: -Does God require perfection?   -What does it look like to let go of all the "doing" and instead be present?  -Following the nudge of the Holy Spirit -Harmonizing with other women -And my favorite quote from her book, “I’m an impatient soul who wants to see results before I’ve put in the work. I’m a needy soul who likes to be affirmed. I’m a curious soul who comes dangerously close to running off cliffs as I chase illusions.”  I felt compelled to share with my listeners one of my personal definitions of perfectionism. Perfectionism is a fear-based habit in which we strive for the unattainable goal of perfection in an effort to minimize pain, shame, and blame. Some of the outcomes of practicing perfectionism are doubt, insecurity, dissatisfaction with one's achievements, being stuck in fear of failure, and fear of the unknown. Inside today’s podcast I have with me Angela Olinghouse. She is a wife and mother who often struggles with finding time to write.  In this episode, we discuss unblocking the fears that are holding us back from achieving the goals that God has put on our hearts. For those of you brand new here today, perfectionism is a destructive habit that plays a negative role in our lives. Perfectionism holds us back and it forces us to live from a place of fear instead of love. Perfectionism lies to us by keeping us in the not enough zone because when you strive for the impossible goal of perfection you will always find yourself in the lack.
