Veg Out 565: Homelessness and Companion Animals

Sanctuary Doc is a nonprofit multimedia project sharing visual stories of compassion for animals across challenging contexts. One such story involves exploring the connection between humans experiencing homelessness and their companion animals. On this episode, we are joined by Sanctuary Doc’s co-founder, Thomas Machowicz, and board member, Diana Hulet. Both are animal photojournalists who have been using their lens to capture the bonds and realities faced by people and their companion animals experiencing homelessness, as well as the vet teams who help keep the animals healthy and these families together. Join us as we discuss the importance of bringing visibility and compassion to humans and non-human animals in vulnerable circumstances and the role of mindfulness in animal activism and photography.

Veg Out 560: Vegan Myth Busting

Veganuary is a non-profit organization out of the UK that encourages people to try veganism for the month of January. You can sign up here to get meal plans, recipes and their celebrity cookbook. Lots of resources available at the site, and we’ll of course link to it in the show notes.

Veganuary can help with the food choices, but there’s also the social aspect of veganism. It can be difficult navigating being vegan in your work, family and personal life. There are lots of myths about being vegan that we would like to debunk for you today so we can help you on your journey to veganism, or if you are already vegan, reinforce what you know, and give you tips on how to explain these things if you are ever in a position to do so.

We'll hear about the initiatives that are taking place on campus to address how our current food systems are fuelling the climate crisis. We'll also learn how universities provide a unique opportunity to implement the Plant Based Treaty and how the benefits of switching to a plant-based food system extend far beyond climate change. Veg Out 526: Veg Labels

Vegan, Plant Based, Vegetarian, Ovo Lacto, Flexitarian – there are many ways to describe how and what you eat. For some, labels are necessary and are held as a way to express their beliefs and maintain their values. For others, it is a starting off point to get to the place they want to be. Can you be vegetarian and wear leather? Vegan and eat honey? Or kill insects? Barbi, Steve and Jeanette talk about veg labels and the impact they have on the veg community.

No, we’re not considering turning our backs on our vegan life choices. Instead we’re talking about mock meats, meat substitutes and protein alternatives. But we also broach the topic of lab-grown meat. When the cell-cultured stuff is ready for mass consumption will we be first in line to try it, or are we happy with the alternatives we already have?
