What do you think of first when you hear, “The Raven?”
Fear?
Terror?
The Simpsons?
Death?
Well, we thought of all of those things and more throughout this breakdown episode of “The Raven,” by Edgar Allen Poe. This eerie poem is a rollercoaster of emotions, and can elicit different ones from person to person. The foremost emotion felt by most is that of loss, and mourning. Poe had the intent to elicit dread from the audience, as pointed out in his essay, “The Philosophy of Composition,” produced a year after “The Raven.” Was he defending his own writing, or laying the groundwork to shape future generations of poets?

Happy Spooky times to one and all,
This October we shall be narrating American author, Edgar Allan Poe's famously eerie poem “The Raven.” It was published in the New York Evening Mirror On January 29, 1845 and was equally praised and panned by critics of the day. The poem made Poe famous throughout both England and America.
Most everyone already knows of the story, but in rereading, recording, and editing this episode Owen learned many more of the details of the story and has many more questions about it. How good is your knowledge of “The Raven?” Are there any bits that you were surprised by in this week’s episode, upon hearing it anew?

The Victorian Periodical Parade podcast is a time traveling vessel, going back 160 years to see what folks were interested in, and how they lived their daily lives. As it turns out they were folks just like us, coming up with reasons to do things, reasons for why things happened, and attempting to make sense of it all. There is much that we can learn about our daily life, by reading stories from the Victorian Era. So far Lady Audley’s Secret has been about middle to upper class life, with a glimpse at lower to impoverished classes, and learning can be had!
In Chapter 13 of Lady Audley’s Secret Mr. Audley returns to his home after an exhausting trek to find his dear friend George. He is so exhausted that he has a dream filled nap on the bed that George used while he stayed with Robert. He is so tired he doesn’t answer the door when someone pounds on it a few times. The end of this chapter includes a review of the evidence that Robert has collected on his hunt for George. This turns Lady Audley’s Secret into the first detective novel, ahead of Sherlock Holmes. In Chapter 12 of Lady Audley’s Secret Mr. Audley heads to South Hampton to see if George is staying there to see Georgie. It turns out that is exactly what Goerge has done. In the small cottage Robert comes across a startling telegraph, that was partially burned. He doesn’t know who sent it, and he doesn’t lay much stake to the fact that it was half burnt, but he keeps it and sets out after George as normal. Where did it come from? Who sent it? Later George Talboys and Robert Audley go on another fishing trip, while Baron, Lady, and Miss Audley trip merrily, and separately around the dale. George wishes to make a trip to the court, but cannot meet whom he wishes as they are out. What does LAdy Audley think about having unknown visitors in her room? What will the Baron do about it? Today Owen Narrates "Lady Audley's Secret" Chapter 7

Welcome back to the Victorian Periodical Parade. We have another reading from the London Journal for you today. My name is Owen and I have been assisting Kari Nixon, PhD, by reading the fiction portions of the 1863 bound annual edition of the London Journal. This is a nice collection of literature and news articles that connects present day folk to the Victorians of 160 years ago.
In Chapter 7 we find that a year has past for George Talboys and that he has stayed with Robert Audley during that time. How much time has George spent with his son and father in law? We are about to find out. Has George met Sir Michael and Lady Audley since returning to england? That answer lies within this episode. What made George stay? Well, the next ship to sail to Australia had just set out a day before George inquired, and the next was due to depart within a month. In the interim Robert persuaded George to go to Russia with him. Why he stayed is beyond that is not in chapter 7 though. Here’s hoping that you all enjoy the next 27 minutes.

Welcome to the second reading of the 1863 edition of the London Journal. Kari Nixon, PhD, compares events of the past both to events of today and similarities with "Lady Audley's Secret."

Welcome back to the Victorian Periodical Parade. We another reading from the London for you today. My name is Owen and I have been assisting Kari Nixon, PhD, by reading the fiction portions of the 1862 bound annual edition of the London Journal. This is a nice collection of literature and news articles that connects present day folk to the Victorians of 160 years ago.
In Chapter 6 George Talboys and Robert Audley head off to see if George’s father-in-law is taking care of George’s child. There are a few decisions and arrangements to be made if he is indeed looking after the child. I wonder what George will do next once he meets with his father in law? I am excited to narrate this chapter so that you may find out what happens.Here’s hoping that you all enjoy the next fifteen minutes.

We are glad that you found your way over here to the Victorian Periodical Parade. Welcome to another reading of the London. My name is Owen and I have been assisting Dr. Kari Nixon by reading the fiction portions of the 1862 bound annual edition. This is a nice collection of literature and news articles that connects present day folks to the Victorians of 160 years ago.
In Chapter 5 George Talboys and Robert Audley end their conversation in the coffee house and move on to Roberts place, where they decide to go find out if George’s wife is truly dead. George also desires to see his son, and his son’s grandfather, as he does not believe that his wife would travel without the. I am excited to narrate something from those rich, Victorian days gone by. I hope that you all enjoy the next fifteen minutes.

S3 E7.5 Aunt Agatha's Husband The Breakdown
Greetings to your Ears and Eyes,
Warning, there are a handful of deaths referenced in this work. Natural deaths due to old age, as well as unfortunate circumstances, but death nonetheless.
Daniel Kasper PHD is with us in this episode to breakdown the nuances of Lucy Hardy’s writing. Here is a story that breaks from the orthodox tradition of presenting cause and effect morality, and instead shifts the morals further into the background for a more personal interpretation. What morals did you pick up in your listening of this story? How outdated is this story? Does the conclusion make up for the less scrupulous phrases and ideologies used throughout? How rattled were you by the deaths and post-mortem scenarios we witnessed in this story? Do you think that George Smyhte is innocent as Aunt Agatha believes? The narration being done by the niece of the main character is atypical and seemingly unique to Lucy Hardy. The events, as narrated to us, are a telling of the narrator’s life, their own experiences of another’s life, the story of returning home to learn of the aunt’s life in their absence, and finally, the telling of what was learned as the end of Aunt Agatha’s Husband. This story skips out on the ghosts of the past, lurking around and the characters must appease them, or in some cases accept them and allow them to move on. However the suspense of the more sinister ending is always held over the reader, leaving us reading on to find how hard the shoe will land on the characters. Since the narrator is a witness, the protagonist is more of a surprise rather than the one one might expect.

He also describes his love and devotion to his wife, which is a happy coincidence that the publication of this podcast episode will be on February 14th.

While his path toward fixing his plans went off and on the rails again and again, it was futile to fight the verdict, but why? In, writing to his last remaining friend and he leaves behind the only accounts of Mr. Hyde, along with other details that belie his own story. It may have been his ego urging him to write down his scientific accomplishments so that everyone could know of Dr. Henry Jekyll’s achievements, or it could have been his final attempt at helping someone finally understand him!

Please welcome back the lovely Kari Nixon Ph.D!
She is back to breakdown "The West Room," written by Lucy Hardy a.k.a. Catherine Lord. This version was published in The Canterbury Journal October 25th 1895, but first WE LEARN! Then after, we will discuss the answers to last episodes Riddles, but first WE LEARN! What would you do if you had a book with text that was foreign to you, and you kept finding distracting topics to talk about? Well, we know what we would do. Hop hop hop around like bunnies.
Did Lucy Hardy a.k.a. Cathrine Lord think that men were irrelevant to the story? Was Lucy a Victorian feminist? Such agreeable characteristics to note.
The Victorians believed that a woman’s emotional state during pregnancy, marked the pregnancy. Cravings, and fears affect the pregnancy or the baby directly, in this case the fear and dread marked the baby for death. The Victorians thought that a shock or fearful moment could affect the pregnancy or baby.
This short story could be described as a female empowerment story, due to the main characters being females.

In this episode, we visit The West Room written by Cathrine Lord in the Victorian Era, and edited by Johnny Mains, narrated by Owen Curtiss.

Architects often get the bad rap, even though they are trying to get the homeowner what they want. But sometimes even that is too much. Have you searched and searched to solve the true crime, which you know has happened in your manor house? Well, we have stumbled upon one by happenstance, and have found evidence of the spiritual kind before any of the physical kind. Our medium today is pregnant, and the father is away. Whatever is she to do? When the greatest support proposed is her sister-in-law, who, as it is known, thinks very little of her. Can our medium mother survive these times of trial?

Do you enjoy murder mysteries? Crime stories? Good, because we have something in that same vein again for you today. The chapter, Remarkable Incident of Dr. Lanyon, is a typical Victorian Era murder mystery case. Listening back to the episode during editing makes me feel like Dr. Jekyll was going through a mid life crisis or major depression. This then affected his two closest friends in Dr. Lanyon and Mr. Utterson. Mr. Utterson's search for friendship and answers in this portion seems to be bread from connection, and longing for the happiness of the past. It shows just how important friendships can be. What do you think of the relationship of these three gentlemen? Is Owen off base, or possibly close to the mark? He looks forward to the final Chapter, because as of now, it is assumed that that is where we get the Dr. Jekyll, of today.

Do you enjoy murder mysteries? Crime stories? Good, because we have something in that same vein for you today. The Incident of the Letter is a Victorian Era chapter that draws from the popular best selling novels of the time, in this chapter we get a "tour of the Jekyll estate, and we see a sick Dr. Jekyll giving a the titular letter to Mr. Utterson. This letter then undergoes some forensic scrutiny by the lawyer's associate.
What do you think of the Jekyll estate? It seems to be situated next to a busy market street, and is of substantial size. I can kind of picture this, but it seems different from the setting of today's movies. We as readers and listeners of the story know "who wrote it," but I find it enjoyable to see the means by which Mr. Utterson investigates the clues, and searches out what is important to him for getting to the bottom of it. Have you ever read the original version of this work? I hadn't and am enjoying it very much. I look forward to the final Chapter, because as of now, I assume that that is where we get the Dr. Jekyll, of today, from.

S3 E Halloween Part 4 - The Carew Murder Case
Hello Again! Do you enjoy Sherlock Holmes investigations? Good, because we have something in that same vein for you today. The Carew Murder Case is a Victorian Era chapter that draws from the popular best selling novels of the time, here we have an inspector from Scotland Yard, who is investigating the residence of a murderer. Finding clues in ashes from a fire. We as readers and listeners of the story know "who done it," but I find it enjoyable to see the means by which Mr. Utterson, and our detective from Scotland Yard, piece together the clues, and make assumptions on how to solve the mystery. Have you ever read the original version of this work? Owen hadn't and is enjoying it very much. He looks forward to the final Chapter, because as of now, he is assuming that that is where we get the Dr. Jekyll of today from.

S3 E Halloween Part 3 - In which Dr. Jekyll was Quite at Ease
Hello Lovely Listeners,
Here is the short, third Chapter of the original version of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, written by Robert Lewis Stevenson.
It is quite different from the movies and renditions I have seen and heard of. I look forward to reading the part that gives rise to the current version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

S 3 E Halloween Part 2 - Mr. Utterson Goes on a Stakeout
We move on to Chapter 2 of our horror story.
Isn't is strange that in the first sentence of Chapter 1 Mr. Utterson the lawyer is described as "a man of a rugged countenance, that was never lighted by a smile; cold, scanty and embarrassed in discourse; backward in sentiment; lean, long, dusty, dreary, and yet somehow lovable," an yet he is not so much embarrassed in the discourses we have seen him in so far? Must be something to do with judging a book by its cover, as the Pagemaster told us not to do.
I hope that by now you know what the title of our story is. If so, please write it in the comments below.

S 3 E Halloween Part 1 - We learn news of a door
In this episode we start digging deep into the more horrific side of Victorian Ghost stories. Did you know that this is how this story started? It seems to me like the film industry has changed this character and story a lot from its inception to now. This main character doesn't seem to match the one I have had in my mind's eye over the last few years. Glad to read the original.
Did you know that another word for door is Ostium? I have known for a few years now, seek it and ye shall find out more.

S3 E3 - Grannies Ghost Story - The Breakdown
Dr. Nixon: “What did we learn from this episode class? That the Victorians considered themselves similar to the Ancient Greeks, and that if it was okay for young greek males to have homosexual acts in their ‘highschool to college ages’ why would it be wrong for our Victorians males to experience and try that out as well? Which lead to defining homosociality, and triangulated desire, where a same sex relationship exists for males in a grey area between plutonic and sexual. Since it would not define the Victorian male’s sexuality at the time is was a don’t ask don’t tell situation. Then, to top it all off, we learned that Oscar Wilde was outed as homosexual during a very public court case, where he had to explain some points of interest within the case."
Owen asks: "Do you think lady Hardy was a historian? Repeating the average through lines of the Victorian Era so that we could more closely identify them in our time?"
Dr. Nixon : The concept of the infinite heat death of the universe came from the Victorians.
Owen: No wonder their outlook on being the best thing on earth came to a depressing end.

S3 E3 - Grannies Ghost Story
In this episode we get to know a twin brother and sister. As the Blue Peter flies for the elder twin sister she describes her husband, and her twin brother in their youth to her grandchildren. She tries to give guidance to all the young girls listening, but the eldest especially.
Do you like reading a history book that then references an older history? I do! It gives us even greater hands on representation of things which happened nearly 200 years ago!
