Chicanery #24 - Long Beach Love

Chicanery #24 - Long Beach Love

Introduction

IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach
No GTD Pro at Long Beach this year, GTP and GTD only

Qualifying
Vasser Sullivan front row lockout for GTD
31 AXR Cadillac on pole for GTP after an eventful session → Pipo Derani with the bin it and win it strategy (locked up and got into the tire barriers but still managed to get pole position)
Argy Bargy between Bourdais and Rockenfeller

Race
Good race or no?
#12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus gets a penalty for moving out of line before the start
Good battle between Porsche, BMW, and Cadillac,
BMW continuing their streak on bungled strategy calls (0-3 now) → Ended up leaving Yelloly out too long after everyone else pitted, and then a yellow came out
#25 BMW and #6 Porsche trade blows
First race where the Mustang GT3s did not have bodywork issues (Insert confetti noise)

Race starts out calm, then delves into chaos later:
#70 Inception McLaren gets into the wall, then collects the #120 Porsche GTD with it
WTR Acura crashes going into turn 1 again (this time it’s the 40!)
Felipe Nasr and Connor De Phillippi go at → De Phillippi gets into the back of the #7 Porsche (just a little love tap!)
Chaos at the hairpin → #6 Porsche Penske gets spun after contact from a Lambo GTD (Lambo was later penalized for the contact, maybe not necessary), this leads to everyone checking up and causing an extremely silly traffic jam situation
#25 gets more damage from the incident → front end damage and rear damage, gets repaired but then ends up in the tire barriers later, officially taking the car out of contention
# 01 Cadillac brake checks the #31
01 Cadillac wins in GTP (the strategy of taking no tires worked out for them)
#89 Vasser Sullivan wins in GTD

IndyCar Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach

Pre-Race stuff
F2 Champion Theo Pourchaire fills in for David Malukas at Arrow McLaren → Recovery for Malukas taking longer than expected as there are still pins in his arm

Qualifying
Arrow McLaren disaster class unfortunately → none made it to the final round of qualifying
Felix Rosenqvist on pole

Race
Good race or no?
McLaren’s troubles continue
Pato gets into the back of Rossi → claims that he got shoved by Blomqvist and that the incident was not his fault (turned out to not be true, and he received a penalty for avoidable contact
Rasmussen gets into the wall and collects Harvey with him
Penalty for Lundgaard of RLL → unsafe release, caused contact with Kirkwood on pitlane
Contact between Newgarden and Herta → racing incident or not?
Scott Dixon clinches the win
Theo Pourchaire does good for his debut (finished p15 or p16 and earned the “biggest mover” award)

Formula Drift at Long Beach

First event of the FD US calendar

Some driver shuffles
Ben Hobson replacing Chelsea Denofa
Adam LZ left the Ford RTR program
Travis Reeder not running this year
Andy Hateley, Derek Madison, and Rudy Hansen up from ProSpec
Hiroya Minowa joined FD US (he’s only 14!!!) → won in FD JP last year

James Deane barbequed his Mustang in practice

New qualifying format
Versus single car runs, Top 32 is now seeded by battles
Idea is for for fans trackside to get more action
Hiroya Minowa qualified P1, Adam LZ P2

OZ1 really catching out a lot of drivers
Rain came down part way through Top 32 and didn’t stop
Caught out the likes of Ryan Tuerck and Deane

Deane v Hurst slugfest in Top 16 → went OMT
Both had INC lead runs but fabulous chase runs, forcing the OMT

James Deane would win in a Cinderella story after the practice fire
Simon Olsen would take P2 and Odi Bakchis P3

Chicanery #23 - Smörgåsbord of Sports Car Shenanigans

Chicanery #23 - Smörgåsbord of Sports Car Shenanigans

Introduction

Quick points on GT races @ Sonoma Raceway
GT races at Sonoma seem to go well despite prior issues with the circuit being repaved and testing/practice sessions being canceled due to the circuit needing to be fixed
Westin Workman scores podium in TGR Cup
Samantha Tan and Neil Verhagan get P2 in GT Challenge America

GT World Challenge Europe @ Circuit Paul Ricard

Good race or no? → Good race in my opinion

Notable moments from the race
Mustang GT3 has rear bodywork issues again
Aston Martin catches fire
#32 BMW DNF after collision with Ferrari and getting a puncture, puncture caused the bodywork to get shredded up (Charles Weerts at the scene of the crime AGAIN)
#98 BMW bungles strategy → Did not get enough fuel in the car the first time around and ended up having to pit again

Nürburgring Langstrecken Series (NLS)
Interesting faces participating in this series this weekend
Glickenhaus
Kamui Kobayashi
Jimmy Broadbent and Steve Brown (won in their class in Race 2)

Race 1
Falken Motorsports clutches the overall win

Race 2
ABT Motorsports played themselves and fumbled the win in race 2 →
Pepper was told to let the clock run out because they were not going to make it on fuel, however he ended up slowing down too much and which resulted in Vanthoor from Manthey snatching the win

Other Sports Car News

Drama at the Nurburgring
Explanation of the drama → Owners of the Nurburgring wanted to run their own series as opposed to NLS running it (caused a split between the two, similar to the CART IRL split)
NES (Nurburgring Endurance series) vs NLS
NES double header season opener races canceled (week of 3/19)

Drama in GTD IMSA (3/25/24)
AWA withdraws the #17 Corvette (in a rage quit kind of fashion)
Initially started as an IG post (with a lot of attitude) then later announced on Twitter that they were withdrawing the car
Continuing the season with one car
Statement from AWA on Twitter → “Anthony Mantella has elected to step away from the GTD program at this moment in time. The #13 car will continue to proceed as planned and will be present at the upcoming round in Long Beach.”

The Dacia Logan returns to the Nurburgring 24H this year

Sebastian Vettel Tests Porsche Penske 963
Will we see him in the 963 at a race soon? → No plans from Porsche to draft him for the 2024 LeMans entry list

Qatar 1812 km Post Hoc penalties
02 Cadillac gets DQ’d due to modification of a homologated part (the rough year for GM continues)
Vista AF Corse Ferrari (54 Ferrari LMGT3) fined €60,000 ($64,800 USD) for sneaking extra engineers on the grid (team tried to disguise them as sales/marketing staff and claimed they didn’t touch the car)
As a result Toyota and BMWgot points (BMW are DQ/Penalty merchants)

WEC requiring a minimum of 2 entries for the Hypercar class starting next season
Good decision or not? (FIA/ACO shooting themselves in the foot imo and creating a solution to a problem that does not exist)
Rule that forbids Hypercar manufacturers from running more than two factory cars is still in place (LeMans is the only race exempt from that rule)
Would spell trouble for customer and privateer teams like Isotta Fraschini

Date of the race weekend moved for both sustainability as well as to mitigate rain chances

Alpine brought upgrades to Japan

Logan Sargeant in Albon’s repaired chassis from Melbourne
Spare chassis won’t be ready until Miami

Daniel Ricciardo’s woes continue → looking into using a different chassis before saying he’s “shit”
Also calling the current run of form “a bit weird to comprehend”

Vettel unretiring? → Lewis hails Seb as a good option for 2025 when he leaves Merc
Seb and Toto have been talking???

Free Practice
Logan dipped a wheel onto the grass at the Dunlop Curve and binned the car
Remember: still no spare chassis

Super Formula driver (and F2 race winner) Ayumu Iwasa made his F1 debut in FP1
Would end up P15 in the session, behind Stroll and Bottas

FP2 would largely be washout → only 13 timed laps in the session

Qualifying
Alpine quali’d P15, P17; OCO, GAS

RUS was investigated for a pitlane incident involving PIA → NFA

TSU would make Q3 again → knocking out RIC this time
TSU P10, RIC P11

Merc’s pace faded as the track heated up
P3-P4 RUS, HAM in FP3 would end up P7-P9 HAM, RUS in Q3

Red Bull front-row lockout → PER only 0.07 behind VER

Race Day
After rain and subsequently cool track temps, race day brought track temps much hotter than expected

L1 T3 crash involving ALB and RIC → Lengthy red flag period to repair the barriers
RIC appeared to just move up the circuit and into ALB
STILL NO SPARE WILLIAMS CHASSIS

The start was re-racked and VER sailed off into the distance

Mercedes would attempt a one-stop after the restart and run long on hards
It didn’t work at all with both cars making an additional stops for hards and then mediums

ZHO would retire on L13 with an unspecified issue

STR and ALO would pit on L14 to swap softs for mediums
It’s here where STR would be investigated for unsafe release into a Haas

With 10 to go, SAR locked up into Degner 2 and brought out local yellows

RUS would launch a late-race attack on PIA and nab P7
PIA felt like he’d been forced off at the chicane

Red Bull 1-2 → VER-PER
Sainz would round out the podium

TSU would nab the final point

Chicanery #21 - Clangers and Bangers

Chicanery #21 - Clangers and Bangers

Pre-Race
Free Practice
Albon has a massive accident in FP1 at Turn 6 → same place he wiped out in 2023
It becomes known that Williams doesn’t have a spare chassis
Logan gets to sit out out of the race

Albon admitted after the decision that the atmosphere within the team wasn’t good
Qualifying
Perez received a grid drop for impeding Hulk during Q1 → OTR P3, lined up P6

Tsunoda knocked Lewis out of Q3 → TSU lined up P10, HAM P11
RIC out in Q1 → is McLaren-era Danny Ric back?

Race Day
Verstappen out on Lap 3 due to a sticking right-rear caliper

VER had complaining about the car being loose all race, up to that point
Last Verstappen DNF was Australia ‘22

VER’s DNF triggered a rash of early pits
All the soft tire starters took hards, BOT’s pit woes continue

Lewis DNF on Lap 16, to a PU failure brought by an oiling issue
This brings out a VSC → Alonso basically getting a free pit stop

Last lap shenanigans from Alonso → copped a +20s penalty for “potentially dangerous driving”
Based on telemetry data from previous laps, Alonso was going significantly slower
Combination of overspeed and dirty air caused RUS to have a colossal accident

Ferrari 1-2!
Carlos P1 - Charles P2 → Lando rounds out the podium

Haas double points! → HUL P9, MAG P10

Albon P11 → causing a lot of folks to ask what was the point of the chassis swap
Albon: “We need these races when you have three [cars] of the top teams retiring. You've got to capitalise on that and unfortunately, we didn't”

Pfaff Motorsports and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

12 Hours of Sebring Weekend
Special Edition Liveries for the weekend! → Gold liveries on some cars to celebrate Mobil 1’s 50th anniversary (01 Caddy, Pratt Miller Corvettes, and 14 Vasser Sullivan Lexus)
For the first time, IMSA live streams their race on YouTube!
MX-5 Cup
Photo finish in race 2 between Westin Workman and Connor Zilisch
Practice
Grosjean puts the Lambo GTP in the wall
Sean Creech Motorsports antics again
Qualifying
99 AO Racing LMP2 on pole after session ends prematurely due to 20 car stopped on track
14 Vasser Sullivan Lexus GTD Pro on pole
Winward Racing Mercedes on pole for GTD → pole stripped from them later due to technical infringement, Ferrari 296 GTD took the place instead
31 AXR Cadillac on pole for GTP after messy qualifying session for the GTP class →
6 Porsche Penske binned it in qualifying (not Penske Perfect :( which resulted in the session being shortened to 4 minutes for GTPs
Mustangs seemed slow, along with McLaren, and Aston Martin (not really much change from Daytona)
Corvette GTDs shuffled to the back of the grid post qualifying due to “unapproved modifications to homologated parts”, making it the second collection of penalties for GTDs
Race
Good race or no?
Chaos at the start → McLaren on McLaren violence, Inception McLaren gets into the Pfaff McLaren due to Risi Ferrari spinning across the track
Corvette struggles continue → AWA didn’t stand a chance (DNF around lap 2 due to alternator issue ), Pratt Miller Corvette stalls on track at some point as well
Pfaff bad luck also continues throughout the race ( Klaus Bachler gets into them)
Several LMP2s run into trouble ( Tower bins it, and 88 LMP2 stops on track)
Sean Creech Motorsports antics continue on
Derani complains about Bourdais racing him too aggressive ( pot calling the kettle black) RLL BMW with a bizarre strategy call → stayed out longer when they should’ve pitted with everyone else
apparently did so in order to have more fuel to get Endurance cup points and to also avoid pit lane chaos

Blunder from AXR → fell back in the GTP field after they went to pit lane when it was closed (avoided a penalty by not servicing the car, but had to go back anyways because they were running out of fuel) and struggled during the afternoon hours due to high track temperatures resulting in minimal handling
JDC Miller Banana boat car breaks :(

Huge shunt for AXR → Derani crashes out at hour 7 after contact with the Ferrari 296 GT and flips into the tire barriers (who was at fault?)
Fan tries to jump the fence to help out (it's the thought that counts)

Acura GTPs both have smoke coming from them
Mustang GTD has the rear diffusers come off causing a FCY (had similar issues with bodywork at Daytona, I think)
Porsche Penske 6 car punts 66 Gradient Racing Acura GT → no penalty issued for the 6 (bs call from IMSA), but Fred Makowiecki loses it a few minutes later due to a puncture (can you say karma)
Earl Bamber terrorism strikes late in the race
Tons of late race FCYs (mostly for debris, IMSA should probably fix this
Good battle for position between Deletraz and Bourdais for first
Race Winners
GTP → 40 WTR w/ Andretti Acura wins GTP and overall (Death, Taxes and Acura)
LMP2 → 18 Era Motorsport LMP2
GTD Pro → 14 Vasser Sullivan Lexus
GTD → Winward Racing Mercedes

HAM on original medium tires, PIA on fresh hards

Stewards were busy
Perez +5s for unsafe release during the safety car
KMAG +10s for going off track AND +10s causing a collision with Albon

Magnussen train → backing the field up to protect HUL during pit cycles

“Unsportsmanlike behavior,” says Permane

Another RBR 1-2
VER finishing 5s ahead of PER

Bearman scored points on debut! → finishing P7
Leclerc rounded out the podium

Post Race
Mercedes still doesn’t understand the car and why it’s slow. At the start of the year, the team talked about how the W15’s pace was roughly on par with where the simulation data suggested it would be. However, post-Jeddah, Toto Wolff said the team is attempting to understand why the car is missing grip in key places versus the simulation data. He also suggested that the team were going to be working between Jeddah and Albert Park to try and find something in the setup (alluding to the team potentially doing something silly at Australia).

IndyCar
Quali
Newgarden on pole → only 0.0058s over Rosenqvist
Race
First stint pretty quiet due to aggressive fuel-saving

Lundgaard and Palou got together at T1
Lundgaard with a puncture

Marcus Armstrong brought out the first caution at L27 T10
Called it “a costly mistake”

Pit cycles during the caution shuffled Newgarden down to P5
Due to the earlier puncture and pit, Lundgaard stayed out and lead

L35 caution for Sting Ray Robb off the track
Luundgard pit here and fell down the order
He’d finish P20

Newgarden retook the lead

Ericsson retired due to a loss of power at L50

Lundqvist got punted by Grosjean at L69 T10

Grosjean was given a drive through penalty
Grosjean’s car would break on L85

Newgarden would check out after the final caution and win
Penske 1-3-4 (Newgarden, McLaughlin, and Power)

Palou and Rossi would have quiet but productive days
Palou started P13, finishing P6 → Rossi P15 to P8

Callum Illot replaced an injured David Malukas → P13

Wingless Wonder Goes Out With A Whimper

Wingless Wonder Goes Out With A Whimper

Introduction

Qatar Prologue
Final race with the wingless wonder → Peugeot debuting the 9X8 with the wing after the season opener
BoP changes for Hypercar (SEE TABLE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE) →
Porsche with a power reduction and weight reduction (515 kW to 505 kW) (weight increase from 1046 kg to 1048 kg)
Toyota → weight increase (now 1089 kg) and power reduction (power reduction 514 kW to 510 kW)
No changes to Ferrari
Cadillac → power reduction (504 kW to 499 kW) and 2kg weight increase
Jota Porsche 963 fast, along with the #5 factory Porsche 963
Lexus LMGT3 quick
Pipo Derani vs. Isotta Fraschini Twitter feud → Isotta Twitter admin claps back at him

Toyota lower on the charts → were they actually slow or just sandbagging
Kobayashi and Hartley allude to them actually struggling (spoiler alert, they were actually struggling)

Round 1: Qatar 1812 km
Qualifying → Is this a good format? (New format for qualifying introduced this year with hyperpole being in all races. It was initially only at LeMans)
TF Sport Corvette on pole for LMGT3
Lexus struggling in qualifying
Porsche Penske #5 car on pole for Hypercar (Matt Campbell continuing his
Toyota #8 car struggling, did not make hyperpole, #7 car did though

Good race? Yes or no?

Race Start
Isotta Fraschini stopped on track before the start during the pace laps (struggled most of the race unfortunately)
Peugeot 94 gets spun entering turn 1
499P Ferrari has contact with one of the United Autosport McLaren LMGT3s → rear wing falls off and causes a safety car

Middle/ End of Race
Lots of cars go off into the gravel, which brings more gravel back onto the circuit (probably should’ve swept the track but oh well)

Porsche Penske #6 car collides with one of the Akkodis Lexus LMGT3s → causes body work damage on the 6 (side number panel ends up damaged and rules state that it has to be displayed and fixed within the next pitstop, team pits one last time to slap a sticker on the car that displays the number)
Lexus receives penalty for the incident
Good battle between #5 Porsche Penske and #12 JOTA
38 JOTA Porsche breaks
**93 Peugeot collapses on the LAST LAP of the race (the wingless wonder goes out with a whimper)
Winners:
Porsche Penske #6 wins overall and in Hypercar class (porsche front row lockout and sweep, also ends Lotterer’s win drought in WEC as his last win was back in 2015 at Spa)
Manthey Pure Rxcing Porsche win in LMGT3

Struggle Bus and Lost at sea teams:
BMW Hypercar team, Isotta Fraschini, Akkodis ASP Lexus team (78 car DNF), Toyota Hypercar team, Cadillac Hypercar (managed a 4th place finish), United Autosports McLaren LMGT3s, TF Sport Corvette (made it to hyperpole and got pole, then fell off during the race)

Surprises:
Mick Schumacher/ Alpine Hypercar team (finished best out of all the debuting HC teams)
Aston Martin LMGT3s (managed a podium)
Peugeot → was doing relatively well throughout the race up until the end

*POST_RACE UPDATE*:

**93 Peugeot receives disqualification after the race due to breach in BoP**
Explanation: Vergne deployed ERS (Energy Recovery System) and the speed was below the set BoP threshold (150 km/h for Peugeot, equivalent to about 93 mph) after running out of fuel
Rules require that if you do it, you must pit → pitting however, would result in a DNF, since it was done in an attempt to qualify the car, it resulted in a disqualification
Rule’s main purpose is to put LMHs and LMDhs on a level playing field

LeMans entry list
us.motorsport.com/lemans/news/the-2024-le-mans-24-hours-entry-list-in-full/10577368/

Noteworthy:
Alex Palou confirmed to be Cadillac’s third driver for the 02 for the race
Thomas Preining in one of the factory Porsches for the race (speculated)

What A Season, Huh? (Captain, It’s Only Bahrain…)

What A Season, Huh? (Captain, It’s Only Bahrain…)

Free Practice
The FP sessions were a proper jumble; much like pre-season testing, no real signs of the competitive order. V-CARB and McLaren topped FP1; Mercedes was fastest in FP2, and Ferrari and Red Bull FP3.

Now that last FP session, with the benefit of hindsight, would sort of presage the race order, with Mercedes being jumbled up with McLaren. But the one constant, and the one that should’ve sounded alarm bells was the stunning lack of pace of the Alpines. All three sessions saw Ocon and Gasly occupying the bottom four positions on the grid (Gasly P16 in FP2).
Qualifying
Q1
Alpine dead last

Sauber next up the list
(Caveat being that race pace seemed significantly better)

Sargeant out just ahead of Alpines amid complaints of traffic
Q2
Leclerc tops the session

Mercedes waited until the end of the session to set PBs
Q3
Verstappen pole
Leclerc two-tenths behind

Russell P3

Both McLarens made Q3
Started 7th and 8th

Hulk made Q3! → P10 starting spot
