Book Club: Broken Open—Listen Again!
Welcome to our book club where we will be discussing Elizabeth Lesser's book Broken Open: How Difficult Times Can Help Us Grow. Together we explore The Call of the Soul and connect with Elizabeths heart stories as well as stories people were open enough to share. One thing we picked up on from the first part of this book is in every experience we can ask ourselves "What does my soul need to learn from this?" and getting quiet enough to listen for the answers. There is so much here when it comes to The Pheonix Process and how if we can be exposed to the pain of life enough that no matter what we can rise from the ashes. Elizabeth is raw and real and shares her infidelities and how her pain helped her grow. As mothers we appreciated the section of the book on children and Elizabeths trials and tribulations with her own children as well as stories from friends and other that impacted her life. There is so much fear when it comes to death and even with birth. Here in this book we learn how to confront our own death, and Elizabeth even walks us through a meditation for dying. This meditation is here to create acceptance and love to help us live a more fulfilled life opposed to living in fear of our last days. Finally, we swim with The River of Change allowing life's lessons and signs to be here as guides in our daily lives.  We are grateful for Elizabeth and her open vulnerable heart and how she has been a beacon of light in the darkest moments of life. Adventures of a Pirate Girl: Voices Rising Podcast LISTEN AGAIN!
Since it was so good the first time, this week we are listening to Davina's interview again while we regroup for Season 3.  We welcome the lovely, wise and bright Davina Menduno in this heart-connected virtual meet-up from America to New Zealand where we get real and talk about life, writing, books and so much more!! In this episode, we dive into Davina’s story while she hitchhiked the high sea in her mid-thirties and explore the wisdom and life lessons sailing brought into Davina's life. We travel into her writing process and why she choose the self-publishing path. Davina shares how support helped make her dream of writing this book come true, and we learn how she chose the title of her book, her tagline, and when designing the book cover, not settling for less when she held a vision for its final look. Adventures of a Pirate Girl This is a swashbuckling (mostly) true story about a woman who decides to untangle her dual dreams of finding a partner and circumnavigating the globe. After many years of entwined devotion to her boat and her man-well... a string of men-she resolves to pursue one-half of the dream, the sailing one, despite the fact that her hormones are bubbling over with baby fever. Planning to hitchhike around the world, with almost no money she jumps on a yacht from North Carolina heading to the Caribbean. Pirate Girl is the Captain of her own life. She navigates with an internal compass that does not allow conventional fears or boundaries to restrict her movement or her mind. She searches her inner horizon through a feminist, sex positive, spiritual lens, making this deep and playful story a journey that will resonate and inspire all kinds of women-by land or by sea. Having avoided patriarchal indoctrination as best she could, Davina's education has been unconventional. Instead of the prescribed college degree followed by a steady job, she chose psychedelics; hardcore travel with very little money; deep dives into meditation; plenty of connections, relationships and love affairs; and a life on the sea. She got her captain's license and then, when her boat sank, she got a masters in fiberglass, carpentry, electrical and mechanics. Her sailing dreams led her to Waiheke Island, New Zealand where she is attempting to grow a small human into an evolved man. Envisioning the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible is what ignites her spirit, and through extensive reading she is studying up on how to make that future a reality. Together we can change our story! Sign on as crew at DavinaMenduno.com. Follow her at AdventuresofaPirateGirl on Facebook, or Adventures_of_a_Pirate_Girl on Instagram. Music by Sarah Caton

Awaken You with Shelly Bond- Episode 38: Voices Rising Podcast
In Awaken You, yogi and storyteller Shelly Bond offers tangible ways of waking up to life. Part guide and part memoir, Shelly shares her journey of self-doubt to self-reflection and finally accepting love. With an authentic voice, she combats the inner critique as a way toward awakening to life flaws and all. Inside this soulful guide, are enlightened echoes of pain, loss, mending a broken marriage, parenting, acceptance, healing, compassion, forgiveness and more. Shelly Bond is a writer, artist, and yoga instructor who teaches weekly classes, workshops and retreats online. She is the founder of Yoga Bliss with Shelly, where she brings yoga, meditation and healing into your home. She is also a Reiki Practitioner and co-founder of Voices Rising Press. She lives in Colorful Colorado with her adventurous husband and three ginger children. Find her on Instagram @shellylovely, Facebook or her podcast, Voices Rising Podcast. Read her blog at voicesrisingpress.com. Being a conscious parent is more than a thought; it is a way of showing up for each and every child as the moment presents itself. The false perception of parenting tells us our children need to be a certain way; they need to look, act, think, behave, and test like everyone else, and if they don’t, we have failed in the parenting realm. These lies we have been fooled into believing are only putting more separation between parents and children. We can stop the destruction now. With the help of unconditional love, compassion, and forgiveness, we can carve a new path for how we will parent from this moment moving forward. Showing up and being a conscious parent is being open to what children are teaching us. Be open to how we can grow from them and with them, and work together to understand how each individual works.  Today is a beautiful day to be alive. There is no better moment than this one; there is nowhere to go, nothing to do, except this moment here and now. Inhale a deep breath, pause in between the thoughts and thank yourself for showing up, followed by a sigh of relief on the exhale. There is a hero within us all, and dreams do come true when you hold them in your heart with belief, no matter what. I am inspired with love to share with you no matter your circumstances or life experiences. With help, we can change seemingly unchangeable events in our lives. How, you ask? With the power of thought and intention, linked with the power of loving and believing in yourself again. Or for the very first time ever. Speaking used to be my worst enemy. I held fear of failure and purpose may as well have been on another planet beyond our solar system. Yet, my journey and these words are more significant than fear. Allowing myself to be creative is a life with the possibility of purpose. No matter the fear, I still take the step; I still write the words even when it’s scary. I write when my heart feels like exploding out of my chest when words become constricting. Fear has never gotten me anywhere but down, yet purpose keeps me afloat.

The Art of Memoir Book Club-Episode 25: Voices Rising Podcast
The Art of Memoir Book Club by Mary Karr Join Sarah and Shelly in another book club episode!  Join us at www.voicesrisingpress.com and follow us on Facebook and Instagram @voicesrisingpress!!! Have you ever thought to yourself… I want to write my story? If the answer is yes—even if there is fear—here is another stepping stone in your journey. We explore if we are a good candidate to write a memoir. There are many questions to mull over before embarking on the arduous and at times painful and even liberating quest of memoir writing. What makes a good memoir? What makes a bad memoir? What would you write if you weren't scared or let go of your fear? If you are someone who doesn't have a good memory maybe a switch to fiction, picture books or writing for young adults would be a better fit. Making a good memoir begins with honesty and being able to delve into the murky waters of the past. Being a memoirist is someone who will be brave enough to write the ugly and dirty truth of the past without trying to make ourselves be the good guy, when maybe we really weren't. There is so many yummy conversations inside of todays episode, please join us and get ready to dig into truth. Letting Go With Fall: Episode 21- Voices Rising Podcast
Fall is the season of transition and letting go. In this episode Shelly and Sarah discuss living in the mountains, parenting, pets, wildlife, elk mating, yoga... We also dig into the question: 𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑤𝑒 𝑙𝑒𝑡 𝑔𝑜 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑓𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑠𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑜𝑛? Are there things we're holding onto that aren't really serving us? Perhaps it's something that once was good and healthy but it no longer is. Perhaps we need to allow ourselves to move on from a job, a relationship or let go of an old habit. Maybe we need some work on letting go of trying to be in control, or letting go of fear–even just a tiny bit. And what are some strategies for actually learning how to let go of things rather than hold on. It can be so beautiful and freeing to simply let things go, to let them be. Like the trees in the fall releasing their leaves and allowing them become compost for next year's growing season, we can also release what is no longer serving us and allow those things we let go of become the rich wisdom and experiences from which we can launch our next venture or idea. So, put on a sweater, make yourself a cup of tea and get ready to dive deep with us into all things fall. 🍁

UNTAMED, Book Club 5th Edition by Glennon Doyle: Episode 17- Voices Rising Podcast
“WE CAN DO HARD THINGS.” ― Glennon Doyle, Untamed What does living an untamed life mean? Being true to our vulnerable, authentic, soul state of ourselves. This means even being vulnerable enough to embrace pain and anger and be bold enough to live a life by our own parameters. “Be careful with the stories you tell about yourself.” ― Glennon Doyle, Untamed Women are taught to be small, kind, reserved, quiet and we put ourselves into cages. Glennon helps us discover how we can free ourselves from our metaphorical cages and step into who we are. Living an untamed life is walking into our inner selves and being brave enough to sit with ourselves. The inward journey brings us from being caged to exploring freedom. “Being human is not hard because you're doing it wrong, it's hard because you're doing it right. You will never change the fact that being human is hard, so you must change your idea that it was ever supposed to be easy.” ― Glennon Doyle, Untamed

The Incredible Story of Yak Girl with Dorje Dolma: Episode 6- Voices Rising Press Podcast
Dorje Dolma is a visual artist, an inspirational speaker, and the author of Yak Girl: Growing Up in the Remote Dolpo Region of Nepal. She has been touring the world with her uplifting story and artwork and has given over hundred presentations for all ages in Europe, Nepal, Canada and the United States. She speaks about the centuries-old way of life in her isolated homeland, how it’s being changed by the slow trickle of modernity now reaching it, and the most effective ways for first world citizens to help those in the third world. Her mission is to inspire others through writing, art and speaking to help spread kindness to others and the need for medical and educational resources in remote parts of the world, such as Dolpo. Dorje was born in Dolpo, Nepal, one of the most inaccessible places on earth, 4,000 meters high in the Himalayas. She was the oldest of eleven children, only six of whom survived the harsh conditions of their lives. She began herding the family’s goats and sheep at age five and by seven she was defending them from attacks by wolves and snow leopards. At ten, Dorje’s parents took her on a month-long trek to Kathmandu to find help for a serious health condition. There they encountered Westerners who arranged to bring Dorje to the United States and get her the surgery she needed to save her life. She eventually graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in Fine Arts. She is the first female writer from Dolpo.
