Noise and Smoke 2.06 - Gürültü ve Duman 2.06 - 15.06.2021
This episode is in English.
In this episode, we continue to talk to Mr.Ben Young about the music of Cecil Taylor during the Wisconsin times, 1973-1974.
Ben Young made the Albert Ayler’s box set “Holy Ghost” realised for our ears and minds. He is the writer of the book “Dixonia”, a bio-discography of Bill Dixon and he is now in the process of writing a biography for Cecil Taylor. These are a few points yet there are many others when we talk about Ben.
Ben describes his personal history of how he started to listen to the music of and started to think about Cecil Taylor’s music. He also mentions the times Cecil visited WKCR FM and the recordings they did both music and poetry.
Meanwhile Karen Barca was mentioned. She was asked to lead the band while Cecil went for a tour with the Unit to Japan ending up at then Yugoslavia, Ljubljana at the Spring of 1973. Ben asks whether anybody is familiar with this Ljubljana concert, where and when and for sure any recordings.
One piece that we are going to listen is the Unit with the participation of Mr Arthur Williams the trumpet player whom was asked to join the group but he extracted himself from the group just before they were about to leave for Japan. This is a unique recording Ben brought for our ears from the radio show of Mr.John Sinclair who produces shows at radiofreeamsterdam.org. It is a piece of the Unit at the 1974 Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival in Exile in Windsor, Ontario.
Arthur Williams is slightly touched, his music, his collaborations his latest release and Peter Kuhn’s and Jemeel Moondoc from a very significant research label, “NoBusiness Records”.
As a closer, Cecil Taylor Unit’s concert with Jimmy Lyons, Sirone Norris Jones and Andrew Cyrille from Cafe Musart, 20th of December 1973 was sampled.
Happy listening!
We are very much honoured to have Ben Young with us.
Hosts are Robert Reigle and Volkan Terzioğlu
Noise and Smoke 2.05 - Gürültü ve Duman 2.05 - 08.06.2021
This episode is in English.
In this episode, we have a distinguished guest: Mr.Ben Young.
Ben Young is one of the producers of the Albert Ayler’s box set “Holy Ghost” realised for our ears and minds. He is the writer of the book “Dixonia”, a bio-discography of Bill Dixon and he is now in the process of writing a biography for Cecil Taylor. These are a few points yet there are many others when we talk about Ben.
Ben introduces us with Glassboro State College Student Ensemble from May 1974 which Cecil Taylor gathered at the time.
He mentions about a trick and actually it is not a trick that Cecil Taylor is not playing in the ensemble. There are two piano players who play like Cecil. The ensemble is a large ensemble, there are two piano players, as well as trumpet, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, a handful of guitar players, drum and percussion players. This concert is an output of extensive rehearsals which Cecil Taylor pushes the players, train them and they could actually play his music without his presence in the Unit.
Ben talks about how Cecil Taylor started his courses (actually improvisation classes) in the Glassboro State College and mentions about Gunther Schuller’s referral.
We are very much honoured to have Ben Young with us.
Hosts are Robert Reigle and Volkan Terzioğlu

Historical context of his style is exhibited and discussed. His influences including Duke Ellington was mentioned.
Gunther Schuller’s review of Cecil Taylor’s early albums was quoted from A.B.Spellman’s beautiful book “Four Jazz Lives”. The tools that the critics had prior to the music of Cecil Taylor was discussed and the inadequacy of the vocabulary to describe the music of him stroke the critics a lot and hence the aggressive attitude he came across with.

His all music performances are organised in the structural form of this Unit Structures. According to his liner notes in the album mentioned is the source to understand and analyse the music. Thanks to Ekkehard Jost who wrote the book “Free Jazz” where he analysed the music in the album so that we all (in fact the critics as well) understand what is going on in the pieces.

His using of melodic and rhythmic cells (actually, Unit Structures, as his album's title) and composing from those cells (units) and letting the other musicians get around and beyond them.
