May Cobb, author of "My Summer Darlings"
Episode 94 Bio: https://www.maycobb.com/  My upcoming thriller, MY SUMMER DARLINGS will be released from Berkley/Penguin Random House on May 17th, 2022. My previous thriller, THE HUNTING WIVES, is now available everyone where books are sold! My debut thriller, BIG WOODS, won multiple awards and was released summer 2018. I'm currently finishing a book about the late, jazz great, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, a project which has been in the works for twenty years. Kirk was a human phenomenon—a multi-instrumentalist who was best known for his miraculous ability to play three saxophones simultaneously. During his brief life, he defied staggering odds—from blindness, to prejudice, to a paralyzing stroke—in order to play the music that came to him through dreams. His story is what made me want to become a writer. I grew up in the piney woods of East Texas where both THE HUNTING WIVES and BIG WOODS are set. After college, I moved to San Francisco where I studied Victorian Literature for my Master's, and gravitated towards that era's detective novels, known as "sensation novels", such as Wilke Collins' THE WOMAN IN WHITE. I then lived in Los Angeles for a few years where I worked for filmmaker/writer Ron Shelton and his wife, the actress Lolita Davidovich. I currently live in Austin, Texas, with my husband and son where we enjoy traipsing around the area’s many beautiful parks. I also enjoy napping, staring into space, making to-do lists for my to-do lists, shoveling cookies down my throat when I'm writing a particularly difficult scene (and even when I'm not), wearing my PJ’s as often as I can get away with and collapsing into bed at the end of a day with a great book.  VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong. Nancy Bilyeau, author of "Fugitive Colours"
Episode 93 http://www.nancybilyeau.com/  Nancy Bilyeau was born in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in Michigan. She studied English literature and American history at the University of Michigan, earning a bachelor's degree, before moving to New York City to work in the magazine business. She was a staff editor at Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Good Housekeeping and InStyle. In 2010 she sold her first novel, The Crown, to the Touchstone imprint of Simon & Schuster. A thriller set in Tudor England, it was an Oprah magazine pick and nominated for the Crime Writers Association's Ellis Peters Historical Dagger Award. She wrote two more books featuring the same main character, a Dominican novice named Joanna Stafford. With her fourth novel, a standalone thriller set in the 18th century art world titled The Blue, she told a story of espionage and obsession with the most beautiful color in the world. In creating Genevieve, the Huguenot artist who goes undercover in a porcelain factor, she drew on her own background. Nancy is descended French Huguenot Pierre Billiou, who came to what was then New Amsterdam in 1665 and built a stone house on Staten Island. It's the third oldest house in New York State. Nancy is now turning her writing talent to creating novels set in the New York City of the past. For her fifth novel, Dreamland, she spent time in Coney Island and was assisted by the staff at the Coney Island Museum. She also did research at the New York Public Library, the New York Historical Society, the Museum of the City of New York, and the Brooklyn Historical Society. Her novella, The Ghost of Madison Avenue, is also set in the New York City of the 1910s, with an Irish American widow who solves a mystery at J.P. Morgan's sumptuous private library.  VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong. J.C. Paulson, author of "Blood and Dust"
J.C. Paulson thinks a mystery can — perhaps should — also be a love story. Switching from fact (journalism) to fiction, it seemed a natural thing to combine the two. Evil versus good. Hate versus love. Think Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane, and a host of cozy mystery couples — not that her first four novels, Adam's Witness, Broken Through, Fire Lake and Griffin's Cure, are all that cozy. A rabid reader of mystery novels, J.C. Paulson has long admired the works of Dorothy Sayers, P.D. James, Louise Penny and Ann Cleeves. She lives in a rambling bungalow on a quiet street in Saskatoon, Canada with her husband, Ken, a goldsmith. She therefore wears tiny golden replicas of her murder weapons around her neck.  https://www.jcpaulsonwriter.com/ VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong. Marie Sutro, author of "Dark Obsessions"
https://www.mariesutro.com Marie Sutro was born in the San Francisco Bay Area, which served as the setting for her debut novel, Dark Associations.  As soon as she learned to read, she developed an insatiable appetite for books.  With each new story, Marie became more fascinated with the transformative power of words.  The magic she discovered in those printed pages sparked an ardent desire to write, which continues to this day.   Marie remains committed to sharing the knowledge that has brought so much joy to her life.  She volunteers with California Library Literacy Services, helping adults improve their reading and writing skills.  Marie is also a member of Sisters in Crime, where she has served on the Board of her local chapter.  Dark Associations, was released on January 10, 2017, and made the Amazon Best-Seller list.  In April of 2018, Marie was awarded the IBPA Ben Franklin Gold Award for Best New Voice in Fiction.  The story is inspired by family history - her great-grandfather, grandfather and father, all having served in the San Francisco Police Department. Marie resides in Northern California with her husband.  They live under the loving reign of three well-loved cats who specialize in pioneering inventive ways to energize the home office environment.  Her new novel, Dark Obsessions, is scheduled for release on April 26, 2022.   VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong. Edwin Hill, author of "The Secrets We Share"
https://www.edwin-hill.com/ Edwin is the Edgar- and Agatha-award nominated author of three novels in the Hester Thursby series: Little Comfort, The Missing Ones, and Watch Her. He was born in Duxbury, Massachusetts, and spent most of his childhood obsessing over The Famous Five, Agatha Christie, and somehow finding a way into C.S. Lewis’s wardrobe. His parents were fond of taking his sister and him on month-long family camping trips across the U.S. and Canada, and one of his best memories is of finishing a copy of The Seven Dials Mystery while the rest of the family visited Mount Rushmore. Growing up when VHS tapes were new meant that watching Alien, Jaws, The Shining, or Halloween whenever he wanted seemed luxurious, and still does today. Like Hester Thursby, he watched these movies – and others like them – a lot. After attending Wesleyan University and graduating with a B.A. in American Studies, he headed west to San Francisco for the dotcom boom. Later, he returned to Boston, earned an MFA from Emerson College, and switched gears to work in educational publishing. He served as the vice president and editorial director for Bedford/St. Martin's, a division of Macmillan Learning for many years before turning to writing full time. He lives in Roslindale, Massachusetts with his partner Michael and his favorite reviewer, their lab Edith Ann, who likes his first drafts enough to eat them. A lot of people helped him create this series, and he is a big believer in paying forward. Don't be a stranger. Robert Gwaltney, author on the "Cicada Tree"
Bio: A graduate of Florida State University, I presently reside in Atlanta Georgia with my partner. By day, I serve as Vice President of Easter Seals North Georgia, Inc., a non-profit organization strengthening children and their families at the most critical times in their development. Through my non-profit work, I am a champion for early childhood literacy. In all the hours between, I write. Raised alongside three feral, younger brothers in the rash-inducing, subtropical climate of Cairo Georgia, I am a lifelong resident of the South. A circumstance, no doubt, leaving an indelible mark upon my voice as a writer. Aside from sense of place, my writing is influenced and inspired by the literary work of others. As a boy, it was with great obsession, I turned the well-worn pages of Charlotte Brontë’s, Jane Eyre. Wuthering Heights? Yes, another source of adoration. And Truman Capote’s debut novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms, I admire with equal reverence along with everything ever written by Tennessee Williams. Charles Dickens’ Miss Havisham is one of my all-time favorite characters. Many hours I spent playing her, wrapped in an old lace tablecloth borrowed from my mother’s linen closet—my tattered, makeshift wedding dress. Locked away in my boyhood room, I haunted the place, plotting revenge, shooing rats from the wedding cake. “Break their hearts my pride and hope, break their hearts and have no mercy,” I would whisper into the impressionable ear of my lovely Estella. Break their hearts. As an adult, my literary palate is diverse, reading everyone from the sublime Michael Cunningham to the gifted Jesmyn Ward to the incomparable Ron Rash. Though my tastes have evolved through the years, one constant remains: the impact of literature and art and music upon my writing. And my unrelenting quest to make and find beauty in this world. https://robertlgwaltney.com VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong. Author Monica Byrne, author of "The Actual Star" Interviewed by Authors Jennifer Anne Gordon And Allison Martine
www.monicabyrne.org/ I grew up in Annville, Pennsylvania, as the youngest of five. Our parents were both Catholic theologians, and our family emphasized mysticism, social justice, and the centrality of art to religious experience. Despite growing up on art, I set my heart on becoming an astronaut----so went to Wellesley College and MIT for degrees in biochemistry, worked at NASA during the summers, and got my pilot's license. But while at MIT, I realized that I liked making things up much more than finding things out. I finished a Master's and moved to Durham, North Carolina, and have been writing ever since. I graduated from the Clarion Workshop in 2008, where I studied with Neil Gaiman, Nalo Hopkinson, and Kelly Link. My debut novel, The Girl in the Road, was published in 2014. It won the Tiptree Award and was listed for the Kitschie, Locus, and DSC Prize for South Asian Literature. My second novel, The Actual Star, was published by Harper Voyager on September 14, 2021. I've performed original monologues twice at TED, hosted a technology series for ViceUK, and spoken across the country on futurism and science fiction. My short stories and essays have been published in The Baffler, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, Religion Dispatches, Wired, Tor.com, Electric Velocipede, Fantasy Magazine, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Electric Literature, and Glimmer Train. I've written five plays produced in Durham, one of which, What Every Girl Should Know, has been performed from Berkeley to Dublin. Josh Malerman, author of "Goblin" interviewed by Jennifer Anne Gordon and Allison Hubbard
joshmalerman.com  Josh Malerman is an American author of novels and short stories. Before publishing his debut novel Bird Box with ECCO/HarperCollins, he wrote fourteen novels, never having shopped one of them.  Being the singer/songwriter of the Detroit rock band The High Strung, Malerman toured the country for six years, as the band played an average of 250 shows a year, and Malerman wrote many of the rough drafts for these novels in the passenger seat between cities on tour. He says this about those days: “I never saw the books with dollar signs in my eyes. It was no hobby, that’s for sure, it was the real thing and always has been, but I was happy, then, simply writing, and while I blindly assumed they’d be published one day, I had no idea how something like that occurred.” As the pile of rough drafts grew, so did the questions as to what he was planning on doing with them. Malerman often says that he lived long in a “glorious delusion” in which he took part in phantom interviews, pretended to have an agent, debated with fictitious editors, and placed invisible hardcover books upon his shelves.  It wasn’t until a friend from high school, Dave Simmer, contacted him that those delusions became reality. Simmer, having worked with authors and properties in Hollywood, asked Malerman’s permission to send one of his books to some people he knew in the book business. Malerman heartily agreed and the pair sent out Goblin, a collection of novellas that all take place in the titular city of Goblin. From there, a team was assembled and Malerman suddenly found himself speaking with a real agent and debating with actual editors. He says this of the part Simmer played in his career: “There were two things at play at that point in time; one, Dave was a ghostly benefactor, golden hearted and smart, descending from the sky to help me. And two, what may sound like some luck couldn’t have become fortunate if I wasn’t armed with a dozen novels to talk shop with.”  A limited edition of Goblin is set for publication on Halloween of 2017, through Earthling Publications. Bird Box was released in 2014 and many short stories and novellas have followed. Black Mad Wheel (ECCO/HarperCollins) is slated for May of 2017 and Malerman now has the task of juggling between the twenty-seven already written novels and whatever new ideas come going forward. Cemetery Dance is set to publish a hardcover limited edition of On This, the Day of the Pig in late 2017. Del Rey (Penguin/Random House) has purchased the rights to Unbury Carol, a fantastic horror-western to be published in April of 2018. The High Strung are working on a new album and Malerman is working on a new book, freehand this time, in an attempt to get back to how he used to write rough drafts.  VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong. Genevieve Gornichec, Cassandra Khaw, Caitlin Starling, authors of Walk Among Us
One of the most popular role-playing properties in the world gets new life with this trio of horror novellas set in Vampire: The Masquerade's World of Darkness by three brilliant talents: Genevieve Gornichec, Cassandra Khaw, and Caitlin Starling The subtle horror and infernal politics of the World of Darkness are shown in a new light in Vampire: The Masquerade: Walk Among Us, an audio-first collection of three novellas that show the terror, hunger, and power of the Kindred as you've never seen them before. In Genevieve Gornichec's A SHEEP AMONG WOLVES, depression and radicalization go hand-in-hand as a young woman finds companionship in the darkness... In Cassandra Khaw's FINE PRINT, an arrogant tech bro learns the importance of reading the fine print in the contract for immortality... And in Caitlin Starling's THE LAND OF MILK AND HONEY, ideals and ethics bump heads with appetite on a blood farm. Three very different stories from three amazing, distinct voices, but all with one thing in common: the hunger never stops, and for someone to experience power, many others are going to have to feel pain. May Cobb, author of "The Hunting Wives"
www.maycobb.com/ My upcoming thriller, THE HUNTING WIVES, will be released from Berkley/Penguin Random House in May 2021. I then lived in Los Angeles for a few years where I worked for filmmaker/writer Ron Shelton and his wife, the actress Lolita Davidovich I currently live in Austin, Texas, with my husband and son where we enjoy traipsing around the area’s many beautiful parks. My writing has appeared in The Washington Post, The Rumpus, Austin Monthly, and Edible Austin. My proudest achievement remains clinching 1st place in the UIL competition for Personal Writing when I was in the 4th grade. Nicki Chen
nickichenwrites.com/ I’m Nicki Chen, an author and blogger from Edmonds, Washington. I’m a small-town girl who met and married a Chinese immigrant, an engineer who found his first full-time job in my hometown. It was his tales about his early childhood in China that were the inspiration for my first novel: Tiger Tail Soup. My second novel, When in Vanuatu, was influenced by the time we spent abroad. Our expatriate years began when Eugene took a job with the Asian Development Bank. At the time, our third daughter was just three-weeks old. As an expat, I served on the Manila International School Board and volunteered at the coop nursery school our daughters attended. I studied Chinese brush painting and batik painting, volunteered with the women’s club and the church, and made friends from all over the world. By the time we returned to the US, all three daughters had graduated from college. My interest in writing fiction began gradually. I took a correspondence course from the Children’s Institute of Literature; I wrote in my journal; I tried my hand at writing short stories. Eventually I applied for a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at Vermont College of Fine Arts. It was one of only a few low-residency courses at the time. But it was half a world away. We were living in the South Pacific by then, in Vanuatu. It was a very long commute, but twice a year I flew to Vermont and back. And I did graduate. Beauty, especially in the natural environment, has always been important to me. I grew up in western Washington State surrounded by green fields with snowcapped mountains on two sides and a river rushing by on its way to Puget Sound. My family camped in the forest, hiked to waterfalls, and cruised among the San Juan Islands. And always my mom was there, pointing out the beauty and encouraging me to sketch it. Later I began to “sketch” with words, saving my experiences and the natural beauty I saw like flowers pressed between the pages of a book. When we lived in the Philippines and the South Pacific, I was equally inspired by the beaches, islands, turquoise water, flowers and trees there. I’m back in Washington State now, in the lovely little seaside city of Edmonds. I’m happy to be living again between the familiar snow-capped mountains of the Northwest and beside the Salish Sea. When I’m not writing, I’m within easy reach of a hilly walk or a ferry ride to the Olympic Peninsula. My husband passed away, but my sister, one daughter, and two of my grown grandchildren live nearby. My other daughters and their families live on the other side of the country, giving us all a good excuse for travel. Jennifer McMahon
https://jennifer-mcmahon.com I’m the New York Times Bestselling author of ten suspense novels including The Winter People and Promise Not To Tell. My latest, The Drowning Kind, will be out in April. I’ve written about ghosts, serial killers, shape shifting monsters, an evil fairy king, a kidnapping rabbit, and now, a terrifying swimming pool. My first novel was, at its heart, a ghost story.  That novel drew me to write about the unexplained, the dark side, the fears that keep me awake at night, the way the past haunts the present.  When studying writing in college and grad school, again and again I was told: Write what you know.  But over the years, I have developed my own mantra, one which is so vital to who I am and what I do that I had it tattooed on my wrist: Write what scares you. I live in Vermont (in a creepy old Victorian on a hill) with my partner, Drea, and our daughter, Zella. When I’m not writing, I spend a lot of time exploring the dark Vermont woods and seeking out haunted places, real and imagined. After studying for a Diploma in Creative Writing from Oxford OUDCE and a Masters degree in Creative Writing at Royal Holloway College she was asked to write The House of Hope, a biography of Dr Joyce Hill who opened a rescue centre for abandoned babies in China, published by Monarch Press. She was taken on by literary agent Jenny Hewson and three historical novels followed, published by Corvus. Secrets of the Sea House is set in the Hebrides and is a dark mystery that explores at the very real events behind the frequent mermaid sightings reported in Scotland a century ago. Return to Fourwinds is a sweeping family saga set between England and Spain between the wars. The Good Doctor of Warsaw is the shocking and ultimately inspiring true story of some of the rare survivors of the Warsaw ghetto during WW2, and features the inspiring story of Dr Janusz Korczak who defied the Nazi brutality by creating an oasis of kindness and happiness for children. A sort of Polish-Jewish Dr Barnardo, Dr Korczak helped draft the first international children's bill of rights and his teaching on how to raise children with love and respect is still widely followed today, and where it is, it makes children's lives happier. Nola Nash
nolanash.com/ Originally from south Louisiana, Nola Nash now makes her home in Brentwood , Tennessee, with her three children. Growing up in Baton Rouge, she spent long hours onstage or backstage in the local community theaters, or writing stories that refused to leave her head any other way than to be put on paper. Her biggest inspiration was the city of New Orleans that gave her at an early age a love of the magic, mystery, and history. There are few better places for her to dream up stories than walking through the French Quarter or Garden District imagining what those places could tell. When she isn’t writing, Nola is teaching middle school English, which means she gets to play with words all day while dodging hormones and drama. Except for the school plays and musicals, that is. Then, she’s the one creating the drama. If the weather is warm enough, she’s out on her balcony tending her garden and suburban wildlife that hang out there. If the weather isn’t great, she’s geeking out over BBC America. When she can, Nola sneaks a few minutes to meditate (only a few minutes because meditating can lead to naps and those make her discombobulated.) She also considers tacos and coffee major food groups. CJ Cookie
CJ Cooke grew up on a council estate in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She started writing at the age of 7 and pestered publishers for many years with manuscripts typed on her grandparents’ old Remington typewriter and cover notes written on pages ripped from school jotters. Finally, in 2009, her hard work paid off, and her debut novel, The Guardian Angel’s Journal, about a woman who dies and comes back as her own guardian angel, was sold at a four-way auction at the Frankfurt Book Fair to Piatkus as their 2011 superlead title. The novel was published under the name Carolyn Jess-Cooke in 23 languages, and was an international bestseller. Since then, she has published two poetry collections, a creative anthology (titled Writing Motherhood) and three further novels, with a fourth, The Nesting, due out in October 2020. Also a poet (published under Carolyn Jess-Cooke), CJ’s prizes for writing include a Northern Writers Award, an Eric Gregory Award, a Tyrone Guthrie prize, and she has twice received a K Blundell award from the Society of Authors. She holds a PhD in literature and film, and is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow, where she researches the impact of motherhood on women’s writing and inclusive approaches to literature. Based in north east England for many years, she now lives in Glasgow with her husband, four children, and a dog named Ralph, who thinks he’s human. CJ is currently working on her new gothic thriller, due out in 2021. In March 2020 CJ Cooke set up the Stay-At-Home! Literary Festival, in partnership with the creative writing incubator, Paper Nations, in response to Covid-19, and as a venture to provide people with accessible, eco-friendly engagement with literature.   https://carolynjesscooke.com/  VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong. Simon Stephenson
www.simonstephenson.com/ So, I'm an author and screenwriter (and once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away I was a medical doctor). I am originally from Edinburgh in Scotland but currently live in Los Angeles, California. I like all kinds of books and most kinds of movies (except horror, urgh) and love just about everything that has four legs except the chairs in my dentist's waiting room. My spirit animal is P22, our local friendly neigborhood mountain lion. I have not yet seen him, but I live in daily hope. My first book, Let Not The Waves Of The Sea' was a memoir about the loss of my older brother, Dominic, in the Indian Ocean tsunami. The title comes from Khalil Gibran's book 'The Prophet', and a particular passage that resonated with me. People have told me that book is more uplifting than it sounds, but you can of course decide that for yourself if you wish. My new novel is called 'Set My Heart To Five', (that title I made up all by myself!) and it is the story of a dentist android called Jared - a 'bot' - who begins to experience feelings. The story unfolds in 2054, in a world where we humans have managed to lock ourselves out of the internet by forgetting the names of our favorite teachers and first pets. It is kind of a love letter to feelings, to the movies many of us grew up on, and the American west. So hopefully there is something for everyone.... Matt Ruff
http://www.bymattruff.com/ I was born in New York City in 1965. I decided I wanted to be a fiction writer when I was five years old and spent my childhood and adolescence learning how to tell stories. At Cornell University I wrote what would become my first published novel, Fool on the Hill, as my senior thesis in Honors English. My professor Alison Lurie helped me find an agent, and within six months of my college graduation Fool on the Hill had been sold to Atlantic Monthly Press. Through a combination of timely foreign rights sales, the generous support of family and friends, occasional grant money, and a slowly accumulating back list, I’ve managed to make novel-writing my primary occupation ever since. My third novel, Set This House in Order, marked a critical turning point in my career after it won the James Tiptree, Jr. Award, a Washington State Book Award, and a Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Award, and helped me secure a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. My fourth novel, Bad Monkeys, also won multiple awards and is being developed as a film, with Margot Robbie attached to star. My sixth novel, Lovecraft Country, has been produced as an HBO series by Misha Green, Jordan Peele, and J.J. Abrams. It will debut on Sunday, August 16. In 1998 I married my best friend, the researcher and rare-book expert Lisa Gold. Tamara Thorne
http://tamarathorne.com/ Tamara Thorne's first novel was published in 1991. Since then she has written many more, including international bestsellers Haunted, Bad Things, Moonfall, and The Sorority. Tamara's interest in writing is lifelong, as is her fascination with the paranormal, occult, mythology and folklore. She's been an avid ghost story collector and writer all her life. Tamara's novels range from straight-out ghost stories to tales of witchcraft, conspiracies, UFOs, elemental forces, and vampires. No matter what topic she chooses, chances are you'll find a ghost or two lurking in the background. Today, she and her frequent collaborator, Alistair Cross, share their worlds and continue to write about ghosts and other mysterious forces. Whether collaborating or writing solo, there is no shortage of humor, sex, blood, and spookiness. Tamara also conducts real-life investigations of anomalous phenomena and has seen a number of odd things over the last twenty years. As an open-minded skeptic, she's spoken to many paranormal groups and has appeared on the television show, Ghost Adventures. Most recently, she and Alistair Cross went on a five-day investigation to an allegedly haunted cabin in California's Gold Country - an adventure that inspired The Cliffhouse Haunting. She has also been featured on many radio programs and in various newspapers on the topics of haunted places and local lore. A journalist by training, she occasionally writes about ghosts and hauntings for a syndicate of southern California newspapers, but her first love is, and has always been, telling ghost stories to make people scream. . . and laugh.
