I know I'm late with it, but Fortnite is such a fun thing to know exists out in the world. Like this entire game exists that has decided there's no franchise or real life person that is too serious or impossible to include in their game. I won't be playing it, we spend far too much time on other pastimes, like this fantastically ridiculous pet project of ours. But there exists a world where Ariana Grande kills Goku with a lightsaber, are you kidding me? how is this not the most hilarious thing in the world? It's like being approached by Multiversus but Multiversus doesn't let you be Naruto with a webshooter who can Kamehameha his foes into nothingness. It's hilarious to see clips of this dumb game and I hope they continue on this trend.

Even if you like Final Fantasy, I think we can all agree that last week's notes went off the deep end. Well, I'm nothing if not a trend follower, so this week I'm going to write way too much about my own thing.

I was never much of a sports guy. I liked playing them just fine — tennis and soccer all through elementary and high school — but I never really enjoyed watching them. I'd much rather be out there doing them than sitting around. At the same time, I always liked cars as a combination of industrial design and mechanical engineering, two sides of the same coin that each have to bend to serve the other. But I was never a gearhead, either.

So no one was more surprised than me to find out how much I cared about Formula 1.

Imagine you're a driver of the fastest vehicle in the world, in a cockpit about ten inches from the ground. There is no windshield. The only thing separating you from the asphalt is a quarter inch of carbon fiber. Behind you sits an engine so finely tuned for speed that if you slow down too much, it bursts into flame from the lack of cooling air. In the pursuit of maximum speed, your car shapes the air rushing around it at 200 miles per hour so that your car is glued to the track with so much force that if you drove up the wall of a tunnel, you could stick to the ceiling. They're called "wings," and if you turned them upside down, you could fly. Sometimes cars do.

The difference between scoring something and nothing is fractional seconds. If you're in fourth, you might as well have not raced at all, even though the guy who got third might just be three one-hundreths of a second ahead of you — literally faster than the blink of an eye. Enter a corner ten inches too far to the left or get on the throttle a little too slow and suddenly your perfect lap becomes a worthless one.

You're surrounded by nineteen other cars just like yours, and all of you are the size of an Escalade. Everyone is watching for a tiny mistake to capitalize on. Blow an exit and watch as three drivers blow past you like you're not even there. The only way to get ahead is to be as aggressive as you can: hit the brake later than the other guy, force him wide so you can get the better line, trick him into passing where you're weak so you can return the favor where you're strong.

Ok with the fake show notes done, this part is just for me, maybe for Liz. I'm going to start talking about the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy 14 and no one can stop me. I just did the Hildibrand questline, and holy shit I loved it so much. The fact that all of the Manderville's are just cartoon characters and everyone else in this universe is just constantly surprised at the beatings that they will take, or the insane feats that they will do is just so god damn good every time. Oh, Hildibrand fell into a drift of snow and can't move his arms to get himself out? Godbert better launch him into the sky. Hildibrand wants to knock his dad out of being mind controlled by an overactive drug? The solution is obviously to grab him, jump four stories up and try to suplex him, only for the effect to wear off early and for Godbert to reverse it and pile drive his son into the ground and do a mambo in celebration. It's so good and overtly dumb in all the best ways. I love it.

An impactful goal — but one which still follows our compliance requirements — by necessity will be revolutionary. A new-generation distribution channel can enhance human resource allocations. In order to manage these new contexts, we plan to take a close look at next quarter challenges to understand their opportunity impact. We anticipate easily taking over the lightweight market while utilizing an extensible leadership paradigm. This will interface with venture capital leverage strategies. In order to ensure that a 90% solution swiftly provides indicators of transition metrics, we must be certain that a get-it-done attitude — coupled with a solutions-oriented approach — is the focus of this new pivot. We should re-articulate our mission statement to indicate that our core competencies will progress us towards our long-term goals.

Every time I have to write the episode notes I consider what Andrew does, how does he write these absurd notes? How does he come up with new and interesting little stories every time? Realistically I need to stop comparing myself to him. I just have a different style, and that is fine. My show notes are more of a small letter to you, dear listener. It's my own time to figure out how we're doing this every time, and today, we're going a little rushed because I've been busy. Maybe I'll come back to this another time and make the notes a little more interesting, but who knows.

Has it ever occurred to you how fucking weird Star Trek — and space travel in sci-fi is? You're in a big metal box (or disk, I know, I know, spare me, pedant) full of air and people and food and water flying through literally nothing. Look, the Vacuum of Space isn't quite a vacuum. It's got dust and shit floating in it. Some planets too, I suppose. But mostly it's empty. We have to bring all the stuff we need with us! Each starship is a tiny little microcosm of our home, our environment, our alma planata.

So how weird is it that there isn't a single blade of grass or blue sky or even simulated sunlight in this tin can zipping through space? You rely on it to keep you alive and get you where you need to go and we think about it like it's a gloried '98 Nissan Altima, not the little slice of ecosystem it actually is. Curved metal and 5000 K lights and miles and miles of hotel-grade carpet, but no chirping birds or warm breeze on your face.

Do you think the aliens Starfleet run into think that we evolved in an industrial park? That earth is nothing but cold steel caves connected by tubes and ladders? The design of Voyager goes beyond "utilitarian" into something so far removed from where we live that it's almost incomprehensible to our little ape brains. If Starfleet is humanity's representation amongst the stars, how did they mess up our home so badly?

You can imagine my embarrassment when I showed up at the debutant ball with no dress and triple lens specs like it was still prospector times. There's pudding in them there hills! They say that the point of any creative endeavor is to make something that you'd like to listen to. Why bother creating something if you're not enjoying it? When we started this podcast, I referenced Seth Godin's idea of aiming for the "minimum viable audience;" the smallest audience possible to sustain your work. Creating something with the largest possible appeal dilutes what makes you interesting, pushes you towards average, not compelling.

So today I am proud to present this episode of Voyenture Time, one that will truly test if we have succeeded in finding our minimum viable audience. Not only did we immediately deviate from the ostensible purpose and structure of our show, we went in strange new directions, bizarre tangents, and explored exceptionally dirty concepts.

Everything is cloudy and dark, even though my eyes are open. I can see the light ahead of me but I can't seem to get any closer. I taste blue. I feel the heat. Perchance, I dream.

Time has no meaning here. Things from the past mix with things from the future. I lose track of who gave me what, why, when. I take a step, the light just out of reach. The Rain starts, but the fire doesn't go out. It can't go out.

A man appears from time to time. He seems surprised, but not that I'm here. Instead, it seems like he's surprised to be anywhere at all. He scowls at me, walking in circles around me as I struggle towards the light, but I can tell he means me no harm. He's just curious, just as confused as I am. His shoulders are turquoise, and mine are blue.

One day — though "day" has no meaning to me, the Man Who Does Not Sleep — I find denizens of this place. They are putting on a play. In it, conspirators are plotting the death of a ruler. A truck explodes. The light stays out of reach. I see something flying in the cloudy sky.

The light seems closer now. At first, I think it's a trick of my eyes. But I'm sure of it. I can almost reach it, can almost feel the brightness in my fingertips. A burning woman watches me. Her flames are a different color than mine, and I feel the blue boiling away on my tongue. It's a phantom pain, an empty spot where sensation should be. Sometimes I forget about it, only to startle when I feel the not-heat, only to remember the flames don't burn.

The day I touch the light began with screaming. I am strapped into a seat with the noise behind me. I can turn and look at it but I can't do anything to make it stop. We're moving, the scream and I, forwards, stopping and starting. I wake up. It is hazy, but the light is there, bright, within reach.

I let it fall across my fingers, across my face. It speaks to me.

It's always black outside my window. Growing up I was used to it being dark, but ever since I've been here, it's been black. Endlessly, always black. 

They give us shades for our windows. I asked someone at Starfleet why once, and she told me that they found better mental health outcomes for crewmembers with shades for missions longer than six months. "We think it helps people maintain a routine."

Every morning I open my shade and the light in my room changes from a low, dark orange to something that almost feels like sunlight, but outside the window is the same blackness that's always there. At the end of a shift, the lights pretend that it's sunset — maybe even the dead of night if I've been in the holodeck bar long enough — and I close the shade to block out the black.

Two days ago there was some sort of transporter accident. I've never actually used one before — I barely even left the ship before we got stranded out here — but after what we've been through I don't think I ever will. I'll spend the extra two hours in a shuttle if it means I don't have to worry about getting blended up with Petty Officer Anderson.

I guess things got bad. Turns out that if you get fused with someone else, you're not two people in one body, you're one new person. I got wondering, do you still have to take orders from your CO if he doesn't exist anymore? I kept writing reports, kept adjusting the resonance in the nacelles. I don't think anyone notices, but we're going to be out here for a long time. I want to make sure whoever takes my place finds these in great shape.

That day I forgot to open my shade. I came back to my quarters at the end of my shift and the shade was still closed. The light in my room told me the sun was just sinking behind the horizon. I stood there a long time as it got darker and darker, thinking about the black behind the shade. 

It was still closed in the morning. I could feel the blackness behind it, sucking the light out of the room. It was overcast, the room grey and flat. I left the shade closed.

The flux density was off in the November-12 chamber. It was easy enough to fix, but I had to draw a little extra power from the warp core. Last time that happened, Chief Engineer Torres chewed me out. Carey talked to me about it in the Mess later, which helped a little bit. But this time, no one noticed.

After I fixed it, I sat down to write my report. I keep them all in the same place on the ship's network. Just makes it a little easier for everyone if they're all in the same spot. There's a number at the top, tells you how many files are in the directory. One thousand, five hundred and sixty-seven. I've written one thousand, five hundred and sixty-seven reports. I never wound up filing one for the problem in November-12.

Here's the thing you need to know about me. If you're going to chill with me, if you're going to be the kind of person who can call me up and have a hang, you know, a pal, a fella, you need to understand something about me. I may look like a regular kind of guy who chills and closets and plays balloons (and who doesn't love how a balloon sounds when it's rubbed up against someone else's wool sweater?). I think we've all enjoyed some time curled up in a hamper thinking about mold and paper cuts. But what you need to know about me, and this may come as a surprise to you, is that while I look like a 37-year-old human with hair braided down to my knees, I'm actually a 39-year-old human with hair braided down to my knees. I suffer from a rare condition called Not-Aging-But-Also-Not-Benjamin-Buttoning-Either where I'll forever look like a 37-year-old human with hair braided down to my knees.

Absolutely airing everyone's secrets that they told him in confidence with bad "pseudonyms" that hide no one's identity, like Pom Taris, and Te'lanna Borres. Creating absolute chaos among the crew, people so mad at him all the time.

You awake. It is cold, and your bed is wet. Something is not right in the house. You look out the window and find the sun is still below the horizon. Your stomach growls. You reflect on this: breakfast will be soon, but can you wait that long? You doubt it.  

You need a plan. You stretch, your body lengthening effortlessly until you can reach the other side of your room. There it is. Mister Bonkers. You pick him up, careful not to squeeze him too hard lest he squeak prematurely. Your legs still in bed next to your drool spot, you contract, your body like an enormous balloon.  

Up the stairs. Down the hallway. Under the door. Next to his head. Mister Bonkers is here to help. It is breakfast time. Today, it will be early. Then it will be time for walkies. You chomp down. Mister Bonkers squeaks, a sound that fills you with joy. Squeak, squeak, says Mister Bonkers from your mouth as your friend's eyes snap open with a start. Squeak, squeak.  

"Jake?" he says wearily. "What time is it?"  

Squeak, squeak, answers Mister Bonkers. Mister Bonkers knows. Mister Bonkers will speak for you. You whine anyway, just to underscore the point. It is breakfast time.   

"It's too early," your friend says, rolling over. This will not do. It is breakfast time. You whine again. Mister Bonkers contributes his thoughts. Squeak, squeak, squeak. Your friend covers his ears with the pillow. The sun begins to spill over the horizon. It is breakfast time.  

"I really hate it when you're the dog," he says as he throws the covers back. Your tail is wagging. You cannot control, nor do you want to. Mister Bonkers is covered in your drool. He has done excellently, articulating your case carefully and clearly. You will reward him with more chewing today. Squeak, squeak, he says, as you follow your friend to the kitchen.  

It is breakfast time.
