The Tale of Bomber Mountain: A WWII plane crash in WY

In 1943, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was flying from Oregon to Nebraska and, when it wasn’t heard from it was presumed lost. Search and rescue efforts commenced in several mountain ranges in Wyoming before a couple of cowboys found the shiny metal wreckage in the Big Horns. The mountain was renamed in honor of the wreckage’s salvage.

Yellowstone’s Zone of Death: How to Get Away With Murder

Yellowstone’s Zone of Death: How to Get Away With Murder

This episode was recorded before the devastating flooding in Yellowstone. Please donate here to help Montana small towns affected by the floods. www.rlacf.org/donate-2/local-causes/carbon-county-disaster-fund/
The “zone of Death,” is a thought experiment by a law scholar about this one weird place in Yellowstone where you could, theoretically, get away with murder. PLEASE DON’T TRY TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER WE DO NOT CONDONE THAT. The idea is that you have a right to be seen by a jury of your peers, but there aren’t enough peers that match your specific location if you’re in Idaho’s very small section of Yellowstone park. Why? You’ll have to listen to find out.

The Great Buffalo Bill Body Heist

The Great Buffalo Bill Body Heist

Many, many towns claim William “Buffalo Bill” Cody as their own hometown boy. Golden was where he was finally laid to rest when he passed in 1917. There were rumors that he had asked to be buried in Wyoming and those requests were denied, so a small group of people claim to have taken it into their own hands to make sure the town bearing his name, Cody, WY, would be his final resting place.

Owen Wister & The Virginian

Owen Wister & The Virginian

Considered by many to be the “First Western Novel,” the 1901 book by Owen Wister was written about a fictionalized version of the very real Johnson County Cattle War. The eponymous “virginian,” was a ranch hand and lawman trying to keep the peace at a ranch near Medicine Bow, WY. The town itself holds the TV show in high esteem, and a hotel was built just a few years after the novel was published with the name “The Virginian,” and was named the most luxurious hotel this side of Denver. Join us as we trace Wister’s touch on Wyoming history.

The Time Garfield Made Me Think Wyoming Was Fake

The Time Garfield Made Me Think Wyoming Was Fake

I was a 5-year-old precocious kid growing up in Wyoming when I saw the episode of Garfield where the eponymous cat explained that “Wyoming was an old Italian word for “No State Here.” The video has gotta be around here somewhere. I remember in my mind there being a joke about Garfield seeing a bunch of dogs wearing UW Cowboys gear, but I don’t think that actually existed, it was me imagining a different ending.

Absaroka: The Almost 49th State

Absaroka: The Almost 49th State

It contained parts of Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota and it called Sheridan, Wyoming its Capital. Absaroka today lends it’s name to the fictional county that Longmire is the Sheriff of and a few mountain ranges that pre-date the state, but for two years in the 1940s, it tried to declare itself as its own state in rebellion against the New Deal and feeling as thought it would negatively affect the farmers and ranchers in the area. This story is so fascinating, come learn about the crazy Wyoming statehood conspiracy!
