Ep. 25 Eduardo Carvalho ~Working for Mother Ayahuasca

Ep. 25 Eduardo Carvalho ~Working for Mother Ayahuasca

Dear Listeners!
In this episode you can get to know a bit about the plant medicine world, more specifically we talk about Ayahuasca. My guest on the show was Eduardo Carvalho who works on the plant medicine field as a musician for the past four years. In this episode through Eduardo’s stories you can get to know about his involvement with the plant medicines, his journey up until this point, but also some general information about Ayahuasca and its role in society. Indigenous plants and traditions play a significant role in how modern humans/societies can re-evaluate themselves while trying to find refuge from the technology and money driven materialistic systems.  This episode can be also a useful resource if you wonder what these plants are all about, in what context are they being used. Moreover, check out the links below for further information about the mentioned organizations and their work.

Ep. 24 Tessa Weber -PR from the heart

Ep. 24 Tessa Weber -PR from the heart

Dear listener!

In this episode you can get to know Tessa Weber, who is a PR professional, media and presentation trainer, lifestyle coach. Her unique combination of expertise led us to touch up on topics like:

-The role of trust in today’s world, but also the almost unavoidable notion of being fake.

-The thin layers between PR, marketing and sales and how these fields meant to support each other.

-How to operate as a PR professional with solid value system and morals?

Because of her background Tessa is able to see and recognize blockages and patterns on the level of an individual and also able to scale up and see through entire organizations as well.

She helps entrepreneurs, startups and established bigger companies to communicate their true message and fully align their core values with their activities and communication.

Often times entrepreneurs struggle to really dig deep in their soul/heart and find the one key message. The one, that would help them in building a thriving business with meaningful products and services. The transformational training developed by Tessa contains methods and tools to find this key message and break through blockages that hinder accessing it and with that holding back many of us from our true potential.

Dear Wachama People!

In this episode you can hear fascinating background stories about the evolution of Wim Hof Method from Bart Pronk, who has been working with the Hoffice and Wim Hof since the early days.

Bart also shares some details about his experiences like: his first ice-bath,  the journey to Poland to record the WHM 10 weeks course,  the preparations and his first climb in record time to the highest mountain in Africa, the Kilimanjaro.

Besides hearing the interesting "old" and recent stories we also discussed present and future happenings and plans around Bart and the Wim Hof Method.

Enjoy the show!

A short intro of Bart from his website:

Bart has been with Wim since 2011. He has been his right-hand man, his compadre, his aficionado and his buddy. He’s travelled to all corners of the world with the Ice-Man organizing events, taking part in ice-baths and breathing exercises and learning the secrets to a happy, healthy life from the master himself.

Bart has been with the Wim-Hof company: Inner Fire, since the beginning. He was the driving force behind the 10 week online program and has started many other initiatives and programmes to further the intellectual reach of the Wim Hof Method.

Bart’s personal achievements include climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro three times, each time setting a new record time, and each time in just a pair of shorts. His experience ranges from personal workshops, through to large group classes and scientific lectures all around the world.

Ep. 22 Jan Hellinga ~DiSC model and gut feeling in sales and entrepreneurship

Ep. 22 Jan Hellinga ~DiSC model and gut feeling in sales and entrepreneurship

Dear Wachama People!

In this week’s episode you can get to know Jan Hellinga, who is the director of Omeo Groep, mentor and business coach who also guides start-ups at StartHub in Wageningen.

After finishing his studies in Dronten and Wageningen, Jan was working on the field of plant protection for 10 years, then he spent around 10 years in sales and in the last 10 years he is into coaching and mentoring.

This could seem very technical, materialistic and rational however, Jan at the same time is and always been very curious about why people do what they do?

His innate curiosity about people’s behavior led him to read through the most relevant psychology literature already during his youth.

Regardless technical, business and psychological knowledge decisions are often based on emotions, instincts and on our gut feeling.
You know, following the gut feeling is one of my favorite topics.

In this one hour long podcast we touched up on the topics of entrepreneurial decision making (rational/instinct based), personality types based on the DiSC model, meditation and new and evergreen business and sales practices. In short, it is all about self-awareness and human relationships.

Enjoy the episode and feel free to contact Jan or me or just leave a comment in the comment section.

Ep. 21 Hoe Ren Wong ~From oil rig to inner peace

Ep. 21 Hoe Ren Wong ~From oil rig to inner peace

Dear Wachama Peeps!

In this week’s episode you can get to know Ren Wong from Singapore. We had a fascinating conversation with Ren and touched up on all kinds of topics. We came to the conclusion that you cannot really live a fulfilled life if your occupation is not in alignment with your values and what your inner voice/your soul is calling you to do. To establish your value system, you might need to try the extremes first to find your middle way. And to be able to hear and find out what your inner calling is, the constant chatter of your mind needs to be silenced. Ren tried out himself in the oil business and later he started to study about renewable energy sources.  Coming from an ultra-urban environment (Singapore) he is experiencing and finding values in rural life close to nature.  The other important dimensions of Ren’s journey is health and self-exploration. Dealing with autoimmune disease since his childhood made him very aware of what he consumes from food to new and body care. Seeing almost every input as information he became very conscious to filter out the unnecessary “noise” and toxins” of the world. The role of fasting when food is restricted or Vipassana silent meditation that restricts noises and many other virtual inputs provided him already deep insights how the world around him and his mind and body operate. Further explorations led him to discover the healing and magical power of plants that can heal our mind, body & soul all together with our environment and economics. Enjoy the episode and leave some comments in case you want to engage.

Ep. 20 Alex van Tuyll ~Organic waste management & food growing with AMI

Ep. 20 Alex van Tuyll ~Organic waste management & food growing with AMI

Dear Wachama People!

With the development of agriculture throughout history we are witnessing the process of more and more control over Mother nature. It is especially true in the case of modern agriculture whit all of its inventions such as fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, high-tech machinery and gene-technology. And even more specifically in the case of controlled indoor systems. Unfortunately, most of such innovations aimed to set up centralized systems, externalize social and environmental costs when they create their business models. Our health is in jeopardy and resources are being wasted along the supply chain.  While these system superiority over nature itself is often claimed.

Alex van Tuyll is a Master student in biosystems engineering at Wageningen University. His initial interest started with a home-made hydroponics system, that he set up in his home’s attic as a teenager.

This experience determined his choice of higher education as he wanted to learn as much as possible about, how to set up indoor agriculture systems. After several years of investigating such systems he learned a lot about their viability. His main motivation behind these studies is to use organic waste for food production. On his journey on figuring out how to create more efficient nutrient cycles, Alex found an approach being developed known as AMI (pronounced like ‘Jamie’): aquaponics, mushrooms, and insects. Studying AMI Alex faced the complexity how nature actually works within the system itself. This new insight made Alex’s view shift from willing to control nature to set up systems that are mimicking natural principles and collaborating with it. So far it was a pretty steep learning curve during the Wageningen years and it is not over yet, there is still lot to learn and investigate.

After a long break the Wachama podcast continues and season 2 starts with the one and only Allan Supercamp (Campbell). Allan was on the first ever episode of the Wachama podcast which was recorded about 18 months ago. In this episode we can get an update about how Allan’s plans altered and how his life changed.

During this long and challenging process, it turned out that Allan’s wife Elke was expecting a baby. The priorities shifted suddenly and the boat project is on stand by for a while.

While focusing on his family and the process of becoming a father Allan returned to his ‘old’ passion of making sourdough bread and this time the passion is slowly becoming a craftsmanship.

Ep. 17 Joaquim Moura ~Compost and Youth, these are my two legs

Ep. 17 Joaquim Moura ~Compost and Youth, these are my two legs

Joaquim Moura grew up as a baby boomer around Copacabana (Rio de Janeiro) which is one of the most dense neighbourhoods in the world. In the post-world war era many new and alternative waves of cultural and philosophical trends were popping up and getting popular around the world. Besides philosophy, yoga and mindfulness practices, alternative nutrition trends were also spreading.

Zen macrobiotics originated from Japan was one of the food related philosophies that were spreading in Brazil in the 1960’s and 70’s. The essence of this philosophy is to see food on an energetic level.

Different kinds of foods can be yin or yang and we have to bring them in balance with each other in our meals. The other aspects of seeing food from an energetic point of view was that Zen macrobiotics promoted to eat locally produced fresh food. The reason behind this idea was to maintain balance and connection with the nutrients and energy sources in our direct environment. The idea of YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT is also coming from these times.

These ideas among many others were influencing Joaquim from a relatively young age. As a student of economics, he started to work for the Brazilian Central Bank at the economics department but soon figured out that the curriculum and mainstream discussions of economics often neglect the social and environmental aspects of economic growth. This realization made him change his studies from economics to design. Joaquim started to see the failures and challenges in our world as design challenges.

After leaving the economic department he started to work at the Bank’s museum of numismatics, and designed books and exhibitions. While laying out the Bank’s house organs, he was able to showcase articles about microcredit, local currency, exercises against the stress and things he had seen as real solutions to the problems. During these years his interest towards agriculture, food and urban agriculture grew enormously and he also experienced farming and rural life for a couple of years.

Following his retirement in 1999 Joaquim dedicated his time to learn more and teach about urban agriculture. Since this time Joaquim translated all the 34 editions of Urban Agriculture Magazine to Portuguese. With this he made these ideas available for the Brazilian and Portuguese urban agriculture communities.

His current projects are focusing on youth as they have a key role in shaping our future. He is creating groups of socio-environmental practices in several schools and promoting their networking via internet. In these groups students learn how to organize themselves and create value for their community while acquiring essential skills that will benefit them during their entire life. They start with composting because the residuals, the students and teachers are always there in every school.

And in the end, the potential of this methodology is not about the money but the organization. Throughout the learning process of socio environmental practices students learn about what are real long lasting values in life. They get inspired to search for excellence and to find happiness in the work they do. Fulfillment will come from serving others and nature properly with dedication.

The priority Joaquim gives to networking – among students and UA practitioners and researchers worldwide – comes from his belief that creating synergies and integrating our “complementarities” will prove to be decisive to achieve our common objectives.

Ep. 16 Nicholas Panayi ~Healthiest Man On Earth

Ep. 16 Nicholas Panayi ~Healthiest Man On Earth

You probably came across the thought provoking videos of the Healthiest Man On Earth!

But do you know his story and what led him to start making videos about food?

Stop wondering- You found the best source to find out more.

Growing up in Cyprus the young Cypriot Nico Panayi often visited New Zealand where his grandfather migrated back in the days. Just stepping into adulthood, the military service was the next duty that Nico had to fulfil.

Following the army Nico started his studies with the hope that he would be prepared for a traditionally successful career, so Nico enrolled the University of Manchester as a law student. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in law a year of wondering started because of a misalignment that emerged between his feelings and the very rational world.

The wondering started first only in book shops and meetups in London. But being open and aware of signs that resonated with his heart Nico ended up on an agroecological farm somewhere south of Devon (UK). Nico visited and spent some time with 10-12 agroecology/permaculture focused communities in the region. During this time, he gained a real hands-on experience about how life on the farms is. Milking a cow for the first time or experiencing how much does it actually take to grow a tomato gave him a totally different perspective on food and life in general.

Moreover he got exposed to the lifestyle of professionals who really walk their talk and live their life while being involved from farm scale to all the way to work on EU level. As Nico was exposed to different side of things both on the practical and theoretical level he has learned about various initiatives and movements such as: La Via Campesina a worldwide peasant movement or Schumacher Collage which is an educational institution that provides cutting-edge learning relating to ecology and sustainability.

By the end of his wandering year, Nico miraculously ended up at Wageningen University being enrolled as a student of the Organic Agriculture Programme. In Wageningen his perception and understanding of relations between nature, human and food broadened enormously and made him aware of many important but sometimes hidden connections we have with nature and each other through food.

Nico believes that education and communication about food related topics should be engaging, energetic, attractive and thought provoking. That is why he started his project and artistic journey as the Healthiest Man on Earth. His mission on a scientific language is: To increase the public understanding of food system This study will be conducted in collaboration with the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Turin which is also a centre of the worldwide known Slow Food Movement.

Let’s tune in and listen/watch the story of Nico Panayi AKA Healthiest Man On Earth and follow him on social media.

Ep. 15 Serf Doesborgh ~The Zeitgeist Movement (The Dutch Chapter)

Ep. 15 Serf Doesborgh ~The Zeitgeist Movement (The Dutch Chapter)

Founded in 2008, The Zeitgeist Movement is a Sustainability Advocacy Organization which conducts community based activism and awareness actions through a network of Global/Regional Chapters, Project Teams, Annual Events, Media and Charity Work.

The Movement’s principle focus includes the recognition that the majority of the social problems which plague the human species at this time are not the sole result of some institutional corruption, scarcity, a political policy, a flaw of “human nature” or other commonly held assumptions of causality in the activist community. Rather, The Movement recognizes that issues such as poverty, corruption, collapse, homelessness, war, starvation and the like appear to be “Symptoms” born out of an outdated social structure.

While intermediate reform steps and temporal community support are of interest to The Movement, the defining goal here is the installation of a new socioeconomic model based upon technically responsible Resource Management, Allocation and Distribution through what would be considered The Scientific Method of reasoning problems and finding optimized solutions.

This “Resource-Based Economic Model” is about taking a direct technical approach to social management as opposed to a Monetary or even Political one. It is about updating the workings of society to the most advanced and proven methods Science has to offer, leaving behind the damaging consequences and limiting inhibitions which are generated by our current system of monetary exchange, profits, corporations and other structural and motivational components.

Some might ask:

Is The Zeitgeist Movement related to Peter Joseph’s Film Series?

No. The Zeitgeist documentary series was the inspiration for “The Zeitgeist Movement”, due to their popularity and overall message of seeking truth, peace, and sustainability in society.

While the word “Zeitgeist” is associated with Peter Joseph’s film series, “Zeitgeist: The Movie”, “Zeitgeist: Addendum”, and “Zeitgeist: Moving Forward”, these films are personal artistic expressions of the filmmaker himself, with the call to found a global movement at the end of documentary Zeitgeist: Addendum.

In this episode you can get an update how members of the Zeitgeist Movement interpret the goals and mission statement published on the international website. Moreover Serf Doesborgh explains who is behind the Dutch chapter, and what are the challenges and next steps of the movement.

Ep. 14 Chintan Kella Alternative Forms Of Organizing (street Vendors Of India & Auroville)

Ep. 14 Chintan Kella Alternative Forms Of Organizing (street Vendors Of India & Auroville)

Dear listeners!

Earlier this year for a periode of 6 months Chintan Kella was a guest researcher at Wageningen University. His main topic the alternative ways of orgnaizing. Alternative could be entirely non capitalist system however Chintan and his colleagues are studying several different layers between capitlaism and other ways of organizing. Trust is crucial element of any interaction among humans. However there is a huge difference whether the trust is based on the given word or it is based on contracts with the involvment of complicated and rigid institutions and lawyers. To dconduct the field study of these alternative forms of organizations Chintan chose the street vendors of India which is a significan portion of Indian society that is largely unregulated meanwhile it's effectiveness in supplying and distributing food and other goods is superior compared to any other organization in the Indian context.

Chintan's other resarch topic is Auroville which is a township in India with the population of around 2,5 thousand people with the intention to operate without politics, religion and the role of the money is reduced significantly.

Auroville was initiated based on it's mission that is just referred as:
A Dream

"There should be somewhere on earth a place which no nation could claim as its own, where all human beings of goodwill who have a sincere aspiration could live freely as citizens of the world and obey one single authority, that of the supreme Truth; a place of peace, concord and harmony where all the fighting instincts of man would be used exclusively to conquer the causes of his sufferings and miseries, to surmount his weaknesses and ignorance, to triumph over his limitations and incapacities; a place where the needs of the spirit and the concern for progress would take precedence over the satisfaction of desires and passions, the search for pleasure and material enjoyment.

Beauty in all its artistic forms, painting, sculpture, music, literature, would be equally accessible to all; the ability to share in the joy it brings would be limited only by the capacities of each one and not by social or financial position.

For in this ideal place money would no longer be the sovereign lord; individual worth would have a far greater importance than that of material wealth and social standing. There, work would not be a way to earn one’s living but a way to express oneself and to develop one’s capacities and possibilities while being of service to the community as a whole, which, for its own part, would provide for each individual’s subsistence and sphere of action.

In short, it would be a place where human relationships, which are normally based almost exclusively on competition and strife, would be replaced by relationships of emulation in doing well, of collaboration and real brotherhood."

Enjoy the show!

He is an authority on trust, privacy, influence, behavior and sustainable brand positioning, experience, management, reputation and innovation. As a chance-thinking innovator and idea accelerator, he has now built up a reputation, inspiring people and organizations with his surprisingly substantive vision of a future-oriented sustainable economy.
He is the inventor and co-founder of the online research platform WorldBrainWave.

Check out some of the topics that we covered during our fascinating discussion with Erik:

People are willing to pay for the trust in their brain. It is actually mental equity that is based on trust. The trust is also a huge question when we look at sustainability. Sustainable brands’ have other purpose than only to make money. The organizations have to be financially healthy and through their activity they make the world a better place. The triangle of people, planet, profit or prosperity is ingrained n their business model. A good organization with sustainable branding is incorporating all these aspects. If we buy an honest product the product is the promise. A sustainable strong brand first has to look company itself inside that is called internal branding. What are the values, purpose, vision, mission? so what kind of message and which products are being sent it to the world? The Building when the product is developed. It should be durable good product, manufactured on a fair way socially and environmentally. However a good product is not enough in itself. The Bridging makes it social proof when many people accept and trust in the product. Many good products fail because they don’t reach the social proof state. The Bonding part is when the trust is complete when people match their own values with the brand and brand fit is being created. And we can still ask: How can brands continously innovate? Are they predicting the future?
Predicting the future is difficult as the timeline goes ahead the vision get blurry. However in core human behavior remains the same that provide reference points for inventors. Neural interface is were technology currently goes. It will have all kinds of benefits but at the same time it can enhance inequality. Moreover applying neural interface has the threat that our brain can get hacked, our memories can get changed.

Ep. 10 Elske Hageraats ~How To (and How Not To) Feed The World?

Ep. 10 Elske Hageraats ~How To (and How Not To) Feed The World?

Dear listeners,

In this episode Elske shares her story how her interest shifted from biology towards social science. This shift was influenced by the well known question among Wageningen students and scientist which is;
How to feed the world?

She went on a journey to find THE ANSWER for this big question!
Studying social sciences and development studies helped her to see the bigger picture, that the top down interventions are very often affecting local communities and smallholders on a harmful way. Food is not just a product that we eat, it is also a tool for achieving economic and political goals therefore manipulation and corruption are almost always present in food related issues.
Real answers can be found in getting involved in gardening, small scale farming and by being part of rural communities. Reconnecting with the land and nature can also help us find our own true nature and show us the real value of healthy food.

Ep. 4 Sander Onsman Onszaden, Putting Impactful Seeds In Minds And Soil

Dear Listeners! In this podcast you can get to know Sander the owner of Onszaden. Sander followed his childhood passion dared to dream and his love of seeds and plants turned the dream into reality. Of course building a company does not happen from one day to another. Even in today's seemingly rapid startup world there is often years long (unseen) preparation prior to the "overnight" success stories. Sanders path was also often dodgy but by now he owns a beautiful seed & plant shop in the center of Wageningen.
