Ep 67: Getting kids to obey
The perfect child, if there is such a thing, in most parents’ minds is a well-behaved and obedient one who also does well in school. Driven by this vision, parents have resorted to a number of methods to have perfect children. In this episode of WADT, the co-hosts will be discussing the right and wrong ways of getting children to obey.
Ep 66: Choosing Friends
This week on the WADT podcast, we discuss a very important aspect of childhood: making friends. As children grow, they will be making more and more of the decisions that affect their lives themselves. One of those decisions is who to choose as friends. How much say should parents have in their children’s choice of friends? What should parents do if their child’s friends are a bad influence? How can parents help their children make good choices when it comes to friends and how to develop strong friendships?
Ep 65 : Hari Raya Puasa
Hari Raya Puasa or Eidul Fitri is here. Many know, for a month before that, Muslims “puasa” or fast by not eating and drinking from dawn until dusk. Many also see Muslims go visiting in colourful attire, not just for the day but even for the whole month. Also, not to mention the Hari Raya bazaar in Geylang Serai and Kampong Glam, where you see some food and drinks that only appear during this season. However, like for other religions, many may not know what are its significance and which practices during Hari Raya Puasa that are religious or cultural. There may also be questions that you may have about it but afraid to ask.
No fret, today we have Ustaz Khalid Rafi to enlighten us. Before that, let me introduce him. A father of…, he is a Research Executive at Wak Tanjong Mosque. He also holds a Bachelor in Syariah from the University of Madinah and a Masters degree from RSIS, Nanyang Technological University in Asian Studies, specialising in ‘Studies in Inter-Religious Relations in Plural Societies’. He enjoys engaging the public through inter-religious dialogues to promote mutual respect and understanding for a progressive community.

You’re listening to the WADT podcast. I am Parcsen and my co-hosts today are Hafiz, Kevin, and Fannie.
Ep 62: Eat, Sleep and Move
Our children are not moving enough, not sleeping enough, and eating too much. Although it has not reached crisis level yet, there are reasons to be concerned and the government saw the need to come up with a 24-hour activity guidelines for children and teens. Is this issue a hot potato? We think it is and we’ll be discussing it today.
Ep 61: How divorce impacts children
The number of divorces and annulments in Singapore has been hovering above the seven thousand mark for many years now. In 2019, 55% of the divorces involves a child under the age of 21. Accumulatively, more than 40k children over the last 10 years are affected by divorce to varying degree . Often, parents assume that children are resilient and so long as they are not showing too much negative emotions (like being depressed or feeling sad) or doing poorly in school, they assume that the kids are okay. But are they? In this episode of WADT, we discuss how the divorce of parents impacts their children.

WADT is marking this important day by talking about women, specifically about how to respect and honour them because they are worthy of them.

But having so many online connections has not improved the quality of life for many. In fact, it has resulted in anxiety and depression of some, especially among the young. What is more important that the number of friends is the number of quality friendships you have. Today, Hafiz and Parcsen will be talking about the importance of making friends.

Kevin is also a father of 3.
Ep 54: To drink or not to drink
Welcome to the WADT podcast. Do you drink? And by that I mean alcoholic drinks like beer, wine, and different types of spirits. Singaporeans consumed on average around two liters of alcohol each in 2018, which was among the lowest in Asia-Pacific. This was partly due to the heavy taxation of alcoholic beverages in Singapore. Even so, health officials were concerned about a rise in unhealthy drinking habits among the young because of the harm alcohol has on the body. In this episode, we will reveal the truth about alcohol so that you will be better informed the next time you have a drink.

Ep 48: How To Achieve Your New Year Resolutions
Hello listeners. Hafiz and I want to wish all of you a very Happy New Year and hope that all that you wish for yourself will be fulfilled. New Year’s day is one of the happiest times of the year. People look forward to it, hoping to put the past behind them and start over, and wish that the new year will be happier and better than the one before. It is customary for people to also make New Year resolutions. But, as experience tells us, by the second week of February most people would have given up on their resolutions. What went wrong? What will it take for us to stick to our resolutions and achieve them? These are some of the questions Hafiz and I will try to answer in this episode of the WADT podcast.

Ep 47: The Gift of Christmas
Christmas is probably the most popular celebration in the world, maybe due to the ubiquitous commercialisation by retail businesses taking advantage of the year end holiday season and buzz. Well, who doesn't know Santa Claus, Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer and the familiar Christmas songs!
But what is Christmas actually beyond the Christmas tree, presents and turkey? Like many religious celebrations, those outside the Christian community may have only a little understanding of its history and significance. Are there practices during Christmas that are purely religious and others are mainly due to culture? Beyond religious beliefs and practices, what are the good values and community spirit that Christmas brings? Are there controversies surrounding Christmas that non-Christians are not aware of?
We are fortunate to have someone who is qualified to answer these questions and many more. Who else but WADT co-host and former pastor, Parcsen.
We take this opportunity to wish WADT followers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Ep 45: Can divorce be amicable?
Each year in Singapore, there are over seven thousand divorces and annulments. And for many of them, they are acrimonious. This year, the Government of Singapore conducted several conversations with members of the public to find a way to make divorces more amicable. An amicable divorce is undoubtedly beneficial for all parties involved, especially the children. But is it possible? Our guest today is Himli Ali and he has been divorced from his wife for about a year and his divorce was (guess what?) amicable. Today, Hafiz and I will be finding out how they did it.
Ep: 44 Problem-solving
In the final installment of the Book Club based on the book How to Talk so Kids will Listen, Hafiz and Parcsen discuss how parents can include and engage their children in the process of problem-solving. Problem-solving is an essential life skill and it can be taught through modeling and practice on a daily basis.
Ep 43: Men who Abuse
Violence is everywhere. It's in cities and on the streets. It is brought to our homes through movies and video games. Most concerning is that it is happening at home in the form of domestic violence. Thankfully there are organizations like PAVE that help those who use violence against a family member, be it a spouse or child. Today, we have as our guests Saravanan Krishnan and Hewlett Chew who are social workers at PAVE and we will be discussing domestic violence and why men use violence.
If you are experiencing verbal, emotional, or physical abuse, do not hesitate to reach out to one of the following:
1. PAVE 6555 0390
2. National Anti-Violence Hotline 1800-777 0000
3. Men's Helplink by Society Against Family Violence https://www.safv.org.sg/mens-helplink
Ep 42: Alternatives to Punishment
Hafiz and Parcsen are back to give an overview of the third chapter of the book How To Talk So Kids Will Listen. This chapter explores the alternatives to punishment. Commonly, parents equate punishment with discipline but they are not the same thing. Punishment has been found to be ineffective in teaching children the right behaviour. What can parents do then? Well, listen to this episode and find out. Do also join in the in-depth discussion at our Book Club which is held on the first Wednesday of every month.
Ep 41: Branding with purpose
Our guest today is Ferdaus, founder of the branding company Neu Entity whose clientele includes MediaCorp, MOE, HP, and Citibank. Before starting this company Ferdaus worked as a web creator and eventually rose to become the creative lead in a company. By now you must have guessed what we will be talking about in today's podcast. That's right. Branding. And you might also have noticed that our social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook and Youtube, they all look different, nicer, well that's thanks to Ferdaus and his team of designers.
Ep 40: Deepavali: Festival of Lights
Welcome to the WADT podcast. The multi-racial harmony that is found in Singapore is unique and it did not happen by accident. It came about as a result of good policies and the combined effort of the citizenry. One of the ways that Singaporeans maintain racial harmony in the nation is by learning about the different cultures that are represented, including those belonging to the minority groups. Today, we will be learning more about Deepavali. Our guest is Ganesan, a civil servant, a husband, and a father of 2.
Ganesan also volunteers with Appa Valnaal Uravu, an arm of Dads for Life that reaches out to fathers in the Hindu and Indian community in Singapore. You can learn more about what they do and their activities by visiting their Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/Appa-Valnaal-Uravu-Dads-For-Life-962575130613559
Ep 39: Engaging Cooperation

Ep 38: Flourishing at Work
Today's episode will be especially important and relevant for men who are either approaching or past the age of 50. The big 50 is a very significant milestone in life. With it comes many changes in the areas of health, outlook, relationships, and work.
Our guest is Mohamed Fadhil who has over 10 years of experience in the professional training industry as a facilitator, conducting workshops relating to emotional intelligence, wellbeing, digital literacy, and workplace communication. What is midlife crisis?
How to flourish.

Ep 37: I don't want to live anymore
Our topic for today is a solemn and serious one. It is something that is affecting more and more people in Singapore. I am talking about suicide. In Singapore, Suicide is the leading cause of death for those aged 10-29. 452 lives were lost to suicide in 2020. And the fact that more than 70% of those who took their own lives are males make us want to talk about it on this podcast. Understandably, those who are thinking about killing themselves or have attempted suicide would not want to talk openly about it. But today, we are honoured to have a friend who thankfully lived to tell his story. Please welcome Jamal.
Hafiz and I have attended the training provided by Caring For Life for those who wish to be equipped to support early suicide ideation identification and care. Go to https://caringforlifesg.org/programmes/ to find out more and sign up for the course.
Ep 36: Stress can make you stronger and smarter
Nobody likes to feel stressed. It makes us uncomfortable and has a sense of helplessness. Advice abound on how to live a stress-free life which is something everyone hopes for. But few dare to even suggest that stress may be good for you, that it can make you stronger and sharper. It can also help you avoid some debilitating diseases in old age.
Our guest today, Dr Khairudin Aljunied, recently read a book entitled The Stress Test and is here to share what he has learned from it. Dr Khairudin is an associate professor at the National University of Singapore. He is the author of 7 books. And when he is not writing a book he plays soccer on Sundays and jogs 2-3 times a week. He is also a father of six children whose ages range between 7 and 21.
What we talked about:
What is fatherhood about
How can stress make us stronger
How a lack of stress can be dangerous
How stress can make our minds sharper and keep Alzheimer's Disease at bay
Why reading is important
How reading can help fathers relate better with their children.
Ep 35: Rewilding
Our way of life has changed drastically Since the days when men were hunter-gathers thanks to technological advances. These advances may have made our lives and work more convenient and efficient but have not necessarily made us stronger or healthier. Human beings are innately wild but modern living has domesticated us and made us no different than wild animals in a zoo. It is time for man to return to their natural state. It is time to rewild. In this episode, Hafiz and Parcsen will explore this interesting subject of rewilding: what it means and how do we do it.
Topics covered include:
1. What is rewilding and why it is necessary?
2. Assessing your movement debt
3. Reintegrating your primal movements
4. Rewilding your home
5. Going wild
Ep 34: Helping children deal with their feelings
Welcome to the We Are Dads Too Book Club.
In today's episode, we begin our deep dive into the book "How to talk so kids will listen & how to listen so kids will talk." This book was dubbed the ultimate “parenting bible” by The Boston Globe. Both the authors Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish are parenting experts who have written extensively about the parent-child relationship.
Chapter one teaches parents how to deal with their children's feelings. The authors want parents to know that when kids feel right, they'll behave right. And the way to help them feel right is by accepting their feelings.
Ep 33: Fit Dad
Singaporeans, and human beings in general, are living longer today. And to enjoy this longer life, it is essential to stay healthy and to avoid suffering chronic illnesses in old age. Today we have Daryl Sung as our guest. He is a husband, father, and physical educator. He believes in keeping fit and staying healthy and does them with a passion.
In this podcast, we talked about...
1. Worrying trends in children's activeness
2. 3 Simple keys to health and fitness
3. How to get started on the road to health
4. How to lead your family to health
Ep 32: Ayah, saya sayang kamu (Daddy, I love you.)
Welcome to the We Are Dads Too podcast. Dads For Life is a national fathering movement that started in 2009 to inspire, mobilise and involve fathers to become good influences in their children’s lives - for life! Numerous studies have found that children do better in nearly all areas of life when they have involved fathers as compared to children with absent fathers. Behind this movement is the Centre for Fathering, a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower fathers to strengthen families. It offers programmes and workshops to equip fathers in all life stages to become effective dads. In 2016, a group of volunteers of the Centre for Fathering came together to focus their efforts on equipping and empowering fathers within the Malay Muslim community in Singapore. It was the birth of Bapa Sepanjang Hayat, or BSH for short. Today, we have with us Surafian, a father of 4 and has been a volunteer with BSH for a number of years.
Do look for Bapa Sepanjang Hayat on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/bapasepanjanghayat) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/bapasepanjanghayat/) and follow them so that you will not miss any of their activities and events.
Ep 31: Teacher, Teacher
Welcome to the We Are Dads Too podcast. Teachers play a very significant role in all our lives. For at least a decade of our existence, teachers have been helping us learn and grow as a whole person. One day in a year is set aside to show our appreciation to our teachers, and rightly so because apart from providing instruction in the classroom they also accompany students on field trips, conduct extra or remedial classes, help with the organization of school functions, and serve as supervisors for co-curricular activities. How one person is able to bear so many responsibilities at the same time confounds and evokes great respect from us all. Because Teacher's Day being just around the corner, this episode will be dedicated to all the teachers who have played such a significant role in our children's lives. And to help us understand the work that teachers do, we have as our guest Andrew Kang. Andrew Kang is a former MOE Vice-Principal and NIE External Consultant. Education seems to be in Andrew's blood because even after leaving the teaching job, he went on to start a company to reimagine learning. Andrew is also a dad. The ages of his children are 18, 16, 14, 11.
Topics
How do you imagine education?
Roles of a teacher
How do teachers maintain their work-life balance

Ep 25: Values in Action
Son: Dad, I’m going to make a cup of coffee to stay awake for final EURO 2020, would you like to have a cup? I can make it for you.
Dad: Oh dear, it sounds tempting, but I’m good. Thank you for asking.
