108. Not a Pod Fade

108. Not a Pod Fade

I did a terrible job of telling you something this month. On February 8th the podcast celebrated its THIRD anniversary! Three years has gone by so fast, it's hard to believe. I appreciate each and every one of you for supporting this show.

As exciting as this anniversary is, I have to be honest - lately I'm noticing a feeling of being burned out. In the past, I would not have honored this feeling and would've kept pushing through. But as the saying goes, "when you know better, you do better" and I'm recognizing it's time to take a little break.

The podcast is not going away and in this episode I share more about the decision of taking a break. I wanted to acknowledge the break and give you the "why" behind it rather than doing what's known as a pod fade (going away without ever being heard from again).

This podcast has been an amazing outlet, allowing me to explore interests that lie outside of my 9-5. I'm excited to come back bringing the best energy I can rather than creating out of pressure that I put on myself (can you relate?!).

Thank you for supporting this show and I can't wait to be back with you again soon!

107. Restore Intimacy & Create Deeper Connection In Your Relationship with Daniela Stevens

107. Restore Intimacy & Create Deeper Connection In Your Relationship with Daniela Stevens

It can be an overwhelming feeling when a relationship has lost intimacy.  It can be even harder to figure out how to get it back. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not as simple as having a weekly date night or scheduled sex on the calendar.  We need to understand the type of intimacy we’re seeking (yes, there are different kinds of intimacy, not just sex) and be vulnerable to communicate those needs.  But why does that sound so daunting?

In this episode my guest Daniela Stevens shares her insights on this vulnerable topic by helping us understand:

  • What intimacy means and the different kinds of intimacy in relationships

  • The impact of busy, fast-paced lives on intimacy in relationships

  • How conditioning and society has shaped our view of what intimacy is “supposed” to look like

  • What a sex practice is and why it might be right for your relationship

Be sure to check out the special gift Daniela shared for listeners of the Wake Up Call podcast episode here: danielastevens.com/podcast

Daniela Stevens (she/they) is a trauma- and attachment-informed certified Sex and Intimacy Coach for couples and individuals of all bodies and all expressions. She supports people to experience deep sexual connection and intimacy with themselves and their partner name by addressing the intersections of personal experience with multiple systems of oppression and by guiding them to clarify, connect, communicate, heal, and co-create the sex they want and the intimacy they desire.

106. Building Self-Trust | The Real Goal of Personal Development

106. Building Self-Trust | The Real Goal of Personal Development

I love personal development work and I'm guessing you do too (since you've found this podcast). Whether it's books, podcasts, and/or working with coaches, focusing on self-improvement can feel expansive and invite growth into your life.

But what happens when the excitement of personal development starts to fade? Your favorite podcast doesn't land anymore and you want nothing to do with yet another self-improvement book.

You know what I think this signals? You're building self-trust, which in my opinion, is the real goal of personal development work. To enter a phase of trusting yourself, your decisions, and your abilities.

In this shortie episode I talk about:

  • Maxing out on personal development work.
  • Taking a break is a great time to integrate the work you've been doing.
  • Podcasts, books, and coaches are great supportive resources NOT instruction guides on how to live your life.

104. New Year, New You Is Bullshit with Kim Tasker

104. New Year, New You Is Bullshit with Kim Tasker

It’s the new year and with that comes the chatter around goals, resolutions, and making big change in your life.

I don’t know about you, but the “new year, new you” vibe doesn’t resonate with me like it used to.  In fact, I think it’s a bunch of bullshit blocking us from one of the most powerful energies for change out there: self-acceptance.

In this episode, I’m chatting with dietitian Kim Tasker, about what self-acceptance means and how it helps to expand who we are as a person, so we can stop chasing the unrealistic expectations we place on ourselves.

Some things we unpack in the episode:

  • The impact of perfectionism, fear, and judgment on your goals and how it leads to a forced, rigid mindset.
  • What self-acceptance actually means (hint hint..it doesn’t mean giving up on yourself).
  • The connection between extreme goals and overcompensating for areas of your life where you feel lack.
  • How the nervous system and chronic stress influence goal setting.

I hope this episode is a loving reminder that you don’t have to become a totally new person this year – the person you are is already enough.

Kim Tasker is an Intuitive Eating and Mindset Dietitian who is passionate about helping others build a relationship with themselves that is based in compassion, acceptance, and love. Kim’s takes a somatic approach to help women move from overwhelm to confident and clear-headed.

103. Manage Life Transitions with Peace | Navigating Liminal Space with Ashley DuFresne

Transitions are an inevitable part of life. From excitement (buying a new home, yay!) to stress (moving is so much work!), transitions take us through a huge range of emotions, and the inbetween space can bring tons of uncertainty. Enter our guest, Ashley DuFresne, the CEO & Founder of Authentic Embodiment. In this episode, Ashley will walk us through how to handle life transitions with peace and grace so we can step into our next chapter feeling empowered.

Ashley DuFresne is a Paradigm Shifter; CEO and Founder of Authentic Embodiment. She is Master Channel and Energy Alchemist, and Soul-Led Business Mentor who supports visionary leaders in transition and guides them into the highest expression of their legacy. Ashley integrates Energetics and Channeling with Behavioral and Neuro- Psychology to initiate Quantum Rite of Passage™ experiences. Her method provides a systemic approach to change, healing, and growth that launches her clients to quantum leap into the timeline of their highest success— the one where they’re making the greatest impact while living in ease, pleasure, and prosperity.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • Liminal space is the transition time between where you were and where you’re going next. It includes emotional, mental, and physical transitions and seasons of life, and it can hold a lot of uncertainty.

  • When we’re in the liminal space, we’re naturally attracted to what feels familiar and safe. We might venture back into relationships, habits, or environments we’ve outgrown just to feel some certainty.

  • High performers tend to rush through transition periods out of anxiety or fear because they want the “achievement” of getting through it. Instead, let yourself sit in the uncertainty and take your time moving through it.

102: Is It Time to Leave Your Marriage? Get Clarity on Your Relationship with Betsy Pake

We all experience marriage troubles, but we rarely talk about our struggles for fear of shame or judgment. In this episode, Betsy Pake is back on the podcast to lay it all out on the table. She shares her own experience of leaving her marriage and the energetic shift that changed the trajectory of her relationship. Betsy also shares signs to look out for to signal what your next move should be, and how she can support you if you need it!

Betsy Pake is an architect of quantum leaps known for creating such quick shifts her clients say their lives have been flipped on its head. Board-certified as a Trainer of NLP and Hypnotherapy, she founded The Alchemy Institute where she trains life coaches and therapists and over the past decade has worked as a master coach to help women who are on the journey of big life changes. Find her on her podcast, The Art of Living Big each week as she explores how to thrive even when “life” is happening!  Betsy lives in Atlanta, Georgia with her husband, has a daughter nearby and is obsessed with her dog Henry... and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • You have to be honest with yourself when you’re in a situation where you’re miserable. It’s normal for relationships to have ups and downs, but when you start growing apart instead of together, you need to take a hard look at your relationship.

  • There’s a lot of confusion and shame that can come from getting divorced, and it’s easy to hide from the causes and then repeat that pattern in future relationships. Make sure you’re doing the work on yourself to be your freest, happiest self.

  • Sometimes leaving isn’t the answer, and instead you need to adjust some things in the relationship. Figuring out ways to infuse more joy and connection into your relationship beyond the occasional date night is crucial.

101: Take Back Your Time by Getting Reconnected to Your Body’s Needs and Desires

101: Take Back Your Time by Getting Reconnected to Your Body’s Needs and Desires

Do you ever feel like your days are ruled by tasks you feel like you have to do, or should be doing according to other people’s expectations, or according to what the clock says? In this episode, my friend Leanne Knight - a graphic designer and entrepreneur - joins me to unpack how we can take back our time and structure our days with tasks and routines that make us feel more connected to our bodies.

Leanne Knight is the owner of Authentic Vision Media and is a graphic designer for thought leaders, coaches, and healers who desire to change the world through their expertise. Leanne weaves their branding and personality into all their marketing visuals so that they feel polished, confident, and ready to speak their truth. From social media graphics to course workbooks, she creates visuals with a focus on impact, clarity, and shareability.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • The work culture we operate in can have a big impact on tying our exhaustion to our income. We start wearing exhaustion as a badge of honor and fear what will happen to our income if we prioritize rest and boundaries.

  • Listen to your body’s signals and don’t worry about how it aligns with the time of day. Denying yourself food when you’re hungry, sleep when you’re tired, or a bathroom break when you’ve gotta go is disconnecting yourself from your body.

  • There are some things we simply have to do, even if we don’t want to do them,  like washing dishes or tedious admin tasks. But, we can reframe those actions as getting us closer to how we ultimately want to feel and spend our time.

100: Stop Forcing Who You’re Supposed to Be & Accept Who You Already Are

100: Stop Forcing Who You’re Supposed to Be & Accept Who You Already Are

Welcome to the 100th episode of the Wake Up Call Podcast! To celebrate, we’re premiering a new look, new intro and music, and a personal wake up call that’s been on my mind lately! In this episode, I’m sharing how I realized that two goals I’ve had on my list for forever were really just me forcing myself into a version of myself that isn’t actually true to me. Instead, I’m shifting those goals and releasing myself of the pressure to fit into those expectations.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • There’s been two areas in my life that I’ve struggled to make forward progress in, and it’s been frustrating as someone who’s an achiever and goes after what she wants. Releasing myself of these lingering goals has lifted so much weight off my shoulders.

  • I spent so much time and money on coaches and accountability partners, and it felt like none of the effort was getting me where I wanted. I started questioning if something is wrong with me, instead of questioning if these goals made sense for me anymore.

  • When we can learn to accept ourselves, we can tackle our goals and create the lives we want from a place of abundance, rather than a place of feeling like we’re lacking or aren’t enough as we are.

099: Understanding the Different Parts of Ourselves Through Internal Family Systems with Katie LaCelle

099: Understanding the Different Parts of Ourselves Through Internal Family Systems with Katie LaCelle

If you’ve ever tried to make a change in your life, but felt stuck and unsure of how to move forward, there’s probably a part of your identity that’s causing that resistance. In this episode, I’m joined by Katie LaCelle to chat about Internal Family Systems - or IFS for short - which is a therapy modality that helps us get curious about all the parts of ourselves to make lasting change and regulate our nervous systems.

Katie LaCelle is a somatic IFS practitioner who is passionate about helping people uncover their own internal wise leaders and reconnect with their deepest embodied intuition. IFS, or internal family systems, is a trauma-informed therapy modality that can help you get present, rewire your brain, and regulate your nervous system. In her spare time, Katie coaches circus and performs on the flying trapeze.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • Internal Family Systems - or IFS - is a process of getting familiar with all the different aspects of your personality, getting curious about the patterns we follow and how we learned those, and what we want to do differently moving forward.

  • We all have different parts or subpersonalities of ourselves, such as “the perfectionist,” “the scientist,” that can conflict with each other. It’s important to practice “unblending” from those parts so no single one of them is running the show.

  • Some ways to identify these parts of yourself are to ask yourself: what is keeping me up at night? When do I put too much pressure on myself, and where does that come from? What makes me feel ashamed, and what’s my reaction to that feeling of shame?

098: Taking the First Steps to Find a Therapist

098: Taking the First Steps to Find a Therapist

After my episode with Matt Thieleman about life coaching versus therapy, I got a lot of great questions about taking those first steps to find a therapist. Therapy is such a great way to work through blocks in your life and learn healthy coping mechanisms for anything you’re struggling with, so in this episode I’m sharing the first steps you can take if you’d like to try therapy, and what to expect from those first few sessions.

Products or websites mentioned:

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • It’s so important to address the things that are making you feel stuck in your life, or that are preventing you from fully enjoying your life. For me, therapy has been a great tool to help me face those things head-on.

  • Finding a therapist can feel overwhelming, but there are ways you can narrow down who you want to meet with. After you find some therapists you might want to work with, get on an introductory call with them. Gauge their vibe, how you feel talking to them, and get to know them a bit.

  • If you get through the first few sessions with a therapist, and it doesn’t feel right, remember there are SO many providers to choose from! Don’t abandon therapy altogether, instead find another therapist until you find the right match.

097: Leave People Pleasing and Perfectionism Behind for Good with Sara Bybee Fisk

Raise your hand if you’re a member of the Recovering People Pleasers Club (my hand is in the air!). In this episode, we’re joined by Sara Bybee Fisk, a Master Certified Coach and Instructor who teaches women how to tame the rampant people pleasing, perfectionism, and codependency that is causing them so much frustration and resentment. If you’re ready to release the anxiety and exhaustion that comes from outside expectations, this is the episode for you!

Connect with Sara + More Resources

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • From the time we’re born, we learn that pleasing our caregivers helps us get our basic needs met, making pleasing people second nature. If you’re socialized as a female, you are taught even more expectations to please everyone around you for acceptance.

  • The hypervigilance of trying to anticipate and meet others’ needs and wants is so exhausting. If you’re a chronic people pleaser and also burnt out and anxious, you might notice some of that exhaustion going away as you release the need to people please.

  • When you feel the urge to people please, sit with that feeling of anxiousness. Take deep breaths, embrace the feeling without acting on it, and start building that muscle of sitting with discomfort.

096: Cracking the Emotion Code to Release the Emotions Trapped In Our Bodies with Lisa Gilliam

Have you ever felt a shift in how your body feels when you’re experiencing a particular emotion? Sometimes you might experience sensations or pain in your body before you recognize that you’re feeling a particular emotion, and that’s what this episode is all about. Lisa Gilliam, a certified Emotion Code Practitioner, Holistic Nutritionist, and Nutrition Response Therapist, joins us on the podcast to teach us how to release these trapped emotions so we can feel better in our body and mind.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • You might notice that you hold emotions in different parts of your body. Maybe your shoulders feel tight and tense when you’re anxious, or you feel like you’re quick on your feet and can’t sit still when you’re happy or excited.

  • Some symptoms that you have emotions trapped in your body are a short fuse (trapped anger), total apathy (extremely guarded emotions), or other strong feelings that are holding you back from doing what you love.

  • Emotion Code is a modality founded by a chiropractor that involves moving emotions through your body to release those feelings. It can help with pain relief, getting “unstuck” from something holding you back, or working through grief.

095: My Anti-Anxiety Holy Trinity | Daily Habits That Keep My Anxiety at Bay

If you’ve been listening to Wake Up Call since the beginning, you know there are a handful of intentional habits I utilize to manage my anxiety. In this episode, I’m giving a quick overview of my top three anti-anxiety habits, AKA my holy trinity, and how you can incorporate them into your own daily routine.

Products mentioned:

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • Limiting my caffeine intake has been huge for managing my anxiety. Since caffeine is a stimulant, it can initiate that buzzy fight or flight response without you even realizing it.

  • Alcohol intake can have so many negative effects on the body, and heightening anxiety is one of them. Then it leaves you feeling more tired the next day, causing you to reach for more caffeine. It’s a vicious cycle!

  • When it comes to sleep, focus on quality over quantity. Yes, you need your 8 or so hours a night, but if you’re tossing and turning all night, you’re not going to feel rested. Look into tools like the Oura ring to measure and track your sleep.

094: What’s Next for the Podcast | Community, Self-Discovery, and Releasing Overachieving

There are some changes coming to the Wake Up Call Podcast… and they’re all good things! This week is a casual chit chat (with a fired up moment in the middle for flavor!) about the new changes coming soon and my ultimate goals and intentions for the podcast. Thank you so much for being a listener of the show, I can’t tell you how much it means to me! If there’s a particular episode of the show that really resonated with you, I would love it if you sent me a DM on Instagram to share it with me!

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • Anxiety was just the tip of the iceberg for me. My physical symptoms from anxiety were caused by everything under the surface: behaviors that weren’t serving me, perfectionism, and the need to hustle and overachieve.

  • I want this show to be a place where you hear perspectives that help shift the way you look at your anxiety and struggles. My hope is that you feel a sense of community because you are not alone in those challenges.

  • Finding out who you are, what you love, what your desires are, and what you want, is one of the most important journeys you’ll ever embark on. It’s important to be curious so you’re always discovering new things about yourself.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • One way to think about the difference between therapy and coaching is processing the past vs. working towards your future. If you struggle to live a normal life due to trauma, therapy is your best bet. If your life is okay but you want more, a coach would be a great support for that!

  • Coaching is a great way to hold dedicated time and space to achieving your goals. They create a safe space to talk through what’s holding you back and how you can propel yourself forward.

  • One of the benefits of coaching is having genuine human interaction when so many of our day-to-day interactions feel very transactional. One of the reasons Matt shares for the surge in new coaches is a need for empathetic connections with others.

092: The Ultimate Meditation Guide | Practical Mindfulness & Finding Your Meditation Style with Rachel Hatteberg Walt

092: The Ultimate Meditation Guide | Practical Mindfulness & Finding Your Meditation Style with Rachel Hatteberg Walt

If you’ve ever thought “meditation is not for me, I can’t do it,” you are not alone! Even our guest and energy expert Rachel Hatteberg Walt felt that way until she developed practices that are practical, grounding, and relaxing. I know we can all use more of that in our daily routine, so in this episode, Rachel is busting some meditation myths so you can find your zen in ways that fit your unique lifestyle and preferences. After you listen to this episode, you can grab Rachel’s meditation library here.

Rachel is a comPASSIONATE and creative soul that thrives on alone time but can’t survive without her loved ones, the outdoors, and following her curiosity. She is one that gets stuff done but also stops to notice the birds in the trees (especially the two owls that live in her backyard!). She is a mom of 3, Speech-Language Pathologist, Meditation Teacher, Reiki Master, OBSESSED with Human Design, and Founder of Craftingood where she is supporting people in changing the world from the inside out.

Connect with Rachel!

Some key takeaways about meditation include:

  • An easy intro to meditation is simply bringing awareness to your senses when you’re doing a task. If you’re washing dishes, bring awareness to how the warm water and bubbles feel on your skin, or how the soap smells. This mindfulness can instantly calm your body and mind.

  • Keep a notepad near you or keep a running list on your notes app of all the random thoughts that you’re holding onto. Maybe it’s a to-do list item you want to remember, or anxiety you’re having about an upcoming project, capture it so you can quiet your mind.

  • When you find yourself feeling stressed and anxious, place one hand on your heart and one hand on your belly. Take a deep breath in and feel which hand is moving more. You want your belly - not your chest - to be filling up with air, so focus on your breathing until you feel the hand on your belly moving in and out with each breath.

091: Let It Be Easy | Lean Into Your Natural Strengths, End Overthinking, and Commit to Your Next Great Idea

“Nothing worth having comes easily,” is a phrase we’ve all heard many times before, but does it always ring true? In this episode, I’m exploring an idea that came to me about letting things be easy. We all have natural gifts and strengths, brilliant ideas that come to us in the shower, and even great opportunities that seem to fall into our laps. I think it’s time we really lean into these and let ourselves embrace what’s easy.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • We’re raised to believe that the only way to get what you want is to work really hard. While that’s important, it’s also possible that leaning into the ease of your natural gifts and strengths can also get you what you want in life.

  • When we think everything needs to be difficult to yield results, we tend to overthink our ideas and get into a cycle of analysis paralysis.

  • Commitment and dedication are the new “working hard.” Be committed to the things that feel fun to you, the brilliant ideas that come to you, and your natural skills.

090: This Is Your Permission Slip to Not Feel Happy All the Time

090: This Is Your Permission Slip to Not Feel Happy All the Time

Have you ever felt upset or disappointed, then tried to talk yourself into happiness by saying “but I have so much to be grateful for?” In this episode, I’m writing you a big, shiny permission slip to stop minimizing your feelings - it’s ok to not be happy all the time! Our emotions are a powerful tool that tell us what we need in that moment, so instead of explaining them away, let’s name and validate those feelings.

Resources mentioned:

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • Don’t deny or judge your feelings. You are allowed to feel however you feel in any situation. Sometimes emotions are scary or ugly, but when we allow ourselves to have those feelings, they’re temporary and pass pretty quickly.

  • The goal isn’t to be happy all the time, it’s just not realistic. You can find a middle ground or neutral state when you get more comfortable with all of the emotions, not just the extremes. Moving from angry to neutral is so much easier than moving from angry to happy.

  • There are so many feelings we could be experiencing in any given moment, not just “good” or “bad” or “happy” or “sad.”Familiarize yourself with the Feelings Wheel. Having a name for the feelings we’re experiencing allows us to embrace and express our feelings instead of wasting our energy trying to push them away.

089: Put the Personal Development Book Down, and Pick Up Something Fun Instead

If you’re a longtime listener of this show, you’re probably - like me! - a big fan of personal development content. But in this episode, I’m sharing how personal development work can be a slippery slope. Working on yourself is an admirable goal, but I’m learning that not only is it okay to sit and be happy with where you are today, it’s a necessary step to our overall growth and development.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • If you’re finding yourself bored or uninspired by personal development content, listen to what your gut is telling you. Watch a reality show, listen to a true crime podcast, or listen to music instead of educational content on your daily walk.

  • Bring some lightheartedness into your daily routines that are usually full of relentless hustling. Play and laughter are important and allow us to relax, unwind, and not take ourselves so seriously.

  • There is nothing wrong with you, and you don’t need to be fixed. Give yourself a break from the idea that we need to constantly grow and develop in order to be “better.” You are good enough just as you are.

088: Behind the Botox: Unpacking the Ingredients, Health Risks, and Societal Pressures of Botox with Gretch Elizabeth

Gretch is a former high school human sciences teacher, beauty educator, and has obsessively studied botulinum toxin for over 7 years. Gretch’s devotion to studying botulinum toxin is stemmed from an experience seven years ago when her sister acquired botulism from cosmetic Botox. Gretch now works full-time as a patient advocate for people who have experienced Botox injuries.

086: The Key to Ending Emotional Eating for Good with Stephanie Mara Fox

086: The Key to Ending Emotional Eating for Good with Stephanie Mara Fox

I’ve shared on the podcast before that I’ve struggled with emotional eating, and I know I’m not alone. In this episode, Stephanie Mara Fox, a Somatic Nutritional Counselor and Mentor, is sharing her expertise on how we can tune into our body’s cues to break our patterns of emotional eating while still giving ourselves comfort and safety. If you struggle with turning to food for comfort, this is the episode for you!

Stephanie Mara Fox, MA, CMBEC, CHC, CYT, is a Somatic Nutritional Counselor and Mentor with a Master’s Degree in Somatic Psychotherapy. She is the creator of Somatic Eating®, a body-oriented, sensation focused therapeutic approach to eating. She’s supported women, coaches, and wellness professionals all over the world, helping them to heal from disordered eating patterns, binge eating, emotional eating, chronic dieting, and body image concerns.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • “Somatic” means relating to the body as distinct from the mind. While a lot of remedies focus on our thoughts first, somatic practices have us pay attention to sensations in our bodies to tune in to what it might be telling us.

  • If you’re stuck in a pattern of emotional eating, recognize that you’re looking for safety in a time of stress in your body. Don’t judge yourself or beat yourself up. Instead, look for other ways to give yourself that feeling of safety that isn’t food related.

  • As you’re working through healthier coping mechanisms, you might feel some grief for your old source of comfort, and that’s okay! Recognize that it did help you feel safe when you needed that, and have compassion for your inner child.

083. Get Back Into Your Body

083. Get Back Into Your Body

If you are like me, you may have found some practices that help you feel more in control of your anxiety, but that doesn’t mean you don’t still experience it. In my early days of anxiety, my sole focus was on making the feeling of anxiety "go away."  But as my experiences with anxiety have continued, I've realized my focus needs to be on something else - getting back into my body.  If you are thinking, “what weird mumbo jumbo are you talking about, Alicia,” you are exactly who needs to hear this.  I promise you it’s not some kind of weird yoga meditation talk, and the further you go in your journey with anxiety (or things that make you feel uncomfortable) it is the exact tool you will need.

074: Are You Muting or Managing Your Stress?

In this week’s solo episode, I’m talking about relating to and managing your stress. As you know, there is no shortage of stress in our lives from work, school, kids, family, and the world. The question I want to ask you is, what are you doing with your stress?

I have a suspicion that a lot of us are muting our stress, rather than managing it. If you are muting, you spend a lot of time numbing and detaching from your body and emotions. The impact of this causes you to waste hours of your week!

Here’s what we’ll talk about to help you get those hours back:

  • How to start tangibly thinking about stress so that you can release it from your body.
  • How to evaluate when you experience a change of state and then recreate it.
  • How to experiment and find a groove of what feels good, what's realistic, and what's working.

073: Changing Your Relationship With Discomfort

073: Changing Your Relationship With Discomfort

In this week’s solo episode, I’m sharing how I changed my relationship with discomfort when I was experiencing really hard moments with my anxiety. While it’s really easy to seek out ways to numb our feelings when we’re uncomfortable (you might not even realize you’re doing it!), it’s so important to acknowledge uncomfortable feelings rather than avoid them. That might sound scary, but I will walk you through the coping process so you can peacefully work through discomfort.

Some key takeaways to change your relationship with discomfort include:

  • There are a lot of things we immediately reach for to ease discomfort: social media, food, alcohol, etc. What would happen if we allowed ourselves to sit with discomfort rather than numb out on something else?
  • Instead of looking for a distraction when you’re uncomfortable, sit with your feelings and name them. Are you feeling anxious? Is your heart suddenly racing? Are tears filling your eyes? Stating what you’re observing in your emotional and physical feelings lets you be an observer and create some separation between yourself and the event.
  • Start to practice what grounds you to disrupt your default response to comfort. Try taking some deep belly breaths, placing your feet flat on the floor, or whatever can calm you down long enough to acknowledge your feelings and then let them pass.

072: How To Bring Self-Compassion To The Habits In Your Life & How To Make Them Stick with Erin Galloway

072: How To Bring Self-Compassion To The Habits In Your Life & How To Make Them Stick with Erin Galloway

Are you someone who has a difficult time when it comes to forming habits? Is your inner critic telling you you’ve failed when you didn’t accomplish everything you wanted to in your day? If that’s the case, it’s not the truth! We’re all unique people which means we all have different styles of forming habits. In this episode, I had a conversation with Erin Galloway, a habit master, about creating habits, understanding your signature system, and the best approach to sustaining healthy habits in your life!

Erin Galloway’s entire career has been focused on behavior change and how small choices add up to have a big impact. Much of her work has been in supporting families, communities, and schools in building healthy environments that lead to long-term, multi-generational wellbeing.

Erin is inspired to spark curiosity in people of all ages, stages, and abilities. Through Habitize Publishing, a self-publishing company started with her elementary-aged daughter, Erin helps to elevate the voices of those who only dreamed of writing "published author" next to their name.  Erin finds joy in helping people realize they are capable of more than they think they are.

Connect with Erin:

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • Developing healthy habits is important. Think of habits in a positive sense. Habits improve our quality of life and can help with healing and serve us in a wide variety of ways.
  • We often don’t have compassion for ourselves when forming new habits. It’s important to give ourselves patience and grace. Try using the “Good, Better, Best” system. Come up with 6 habits that make up a “best” day and wind it down from there. That way, if you accomplish 2 habits in your day, it’s good. If you accomplish 4 habits, it’s better. 071: How Diet Culture Is Deeply Ingrained In Our Choices and How to Overcome It with Lauren Balterman

Don’t think you’re affected by diet culture? Think again. If you’ve ever stepped on a scale and didn’t like the number or thought “carbs are bad,” then you’ve been affected by diet culture. Diet culture is not just physical but also mental, tying a disproportionately large amount of self-worth to appearance. But it's more than that… It affects our beliefs, which ultimately drive our behavior. In this episode, I chatted with Lauren Balterman about diet culture, how to unpack it, and bring about your best self.

Lauren Balterman is a Licensed Counselor, Certified Personal Trainer, certified in NLP, and holds an advanced degree in nutrition. She has been helping transform women's minds and bodies for a decade. Her mission is to guide and support women to become the greatest and most fulfilled version of themselves through mindset work, nutrition and physical fitness.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • Diet culture is more than just ads for fad diets. It’s the sum of all the messaging we receive about body image, our value as it relates to food, and misinformation about food and exercise.
  • Get inquisitive. Be your own detective and start seeking your own truth. Dig deep and figure out where your behaviors stem from and what’s actually true about nutrition and exercise.
  • Health is more than physical; it’s mental and emotional, too. Your behavior stems from your deeply held beliefs, which can then be reinforced by our behaviors. We need to examine these beliefs in order to change our behavior.

070: The People Pleaser’s Guide to Unleashing Your Inner Wild Woman with Sheila Anne

So many women live their lives according to the boxes we’re supposed to fit into: buttoned up, nurturing, doting, overly generous, or agreeable. But what if there’s a part of us that doesn’t fit into those boxes? Chances are, most of the time you might not fit into the persona others expect of you, and in this episode, Sheila Anne is here to introduce us to our inner wild woman. If you’ve been wanting to live and present yourself more authentically and unapologetically, this episode is for you!

Sheila's mission is to help ambitious women thrive in body, mind, and soul. She supports clients and groups in making whole-person change by holding space for their unique experiences, offering new perspectives, and intuitively integrating healing modalities. She also hosts events and retreats! She is a Trauma-Informed Certified Coach, Whole Person Certified Coach, ICF Professional Certified Coach, and Yoga Instructor.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

  • People pleasing is one of the ways we suppress our inner wild woman, or our inner knowing. People pleasing is not a character flaw that we should be ashamed of, it’s a survival tactic we picked up from our very human need to be liked and to belong.
  • Getting back in touch with our inner wild woman means recognizing and communicating our needs. What does your “hell yes” feel like in your body and what does your “hell no” feel like?
  • What’s something you’re passionate about or something you love that you don’t make time for right now? Maybe you used to play a musical instrument, or you want to volunteer for a cause you believe in.

069: Energy Work 101 | How Chakras are Connected to Your Health & Wellness with Rachel Walt

069: Energy Work 101 | How Chakras are Connected to Your Health & Wellness with Rachel Walt

Are you curious about energy healing, chakras, and how they’re connected to our physical and emotional health? In this episode, our now three-time guest Rachel Walt is joining us to share her expertise and learnings about chakras as a Reiki healer. From which physical and emotional symptoms are tied to which chakras, to what you can do to ease each of these symptoms, this episode has everything you need to go from off-balance to energized!

Rachel Walt is a compassionate (emphasis on the passionate) and creative soul that thrives on alone time but can’t survive without her loved ones, the outdoors, following her curiosity and Indian food. She is one that gets stuff done but also stops to notice the birds in the trees (especially the two owls that live in her backyard!). She is the Founder of Craftingood where she partners with families to change the world from the inside out through coaching, energy work, & supportive products.

Connect with Rachel:

Some key takeaways on energy work and chakras are:

  • Energy shifts and changes as it moves through our body. Chakras are energy centers throughout the body that let us know when there are imbalances or blocks in our bodies from a physical, emotional, or spiritual perspective.
  • There are so many ways to bring balance to the various chakras, but you can get started through yoga, breathwork, and spending time in nature. Each chakra has more specific practices for bringing balance, but start small and build those rituals!
  • Learning about the chakras gives us an opportunity to listen more closely to our bodies. When we’re feeling physical or emotional symptoms, you can ask yourself: what is my body trying to tell me?

068: Embracing Seasons In Your Life & Work for Peace Over Productivity with Jessica Lackey

When you hear the familiar “whoosh” or “ding” of a notification on your phone from an email or Slack message, do you get a hit of dread and a sense of urgency? You are definitely not alone. If you’re struggling with a constant need to be productive and on-call all the time, this is the episode for you! Our guest, Jessica Lackey, is here to talk us through the concept of intentional seasons of work and rest in our lives so we can prioritize peace over productivity when life calls for it (which is whenever you want!).

Jessica Lackey is a Feminist Strategy and Operations Coach and Consultant for soul-centered entrepreneurs and small businesses. She combines her deep experience in strategy consulting, Fortune 500 operations leadership, and a coaching and somatics practice to radically transform you and your business. She offers group programs, 1:1 consulting, and Fractional COO services. Jessica is an ACC Certified Coach and has an MBA from Harvard Business School. Some key takeaways from our conversation are:

  • The need and drive to be productive isn’t just personal or individual. It’s deeply embedded into our social systems that productivity is where our value comes from, and that rest doesn’t need to be a priority. It’s not just you!
  • Set boundaries around email and when you’ll be checking it. Let people know they can call you if it’s an emergency. If it appears constant, urgent communication is mandatory in your job or career, consider making a switch for your well-being.
  • So many industries are examples for us to learn about seasons of activity vs. rest. Athletes don’t train at a high level all year round. They train to prepare to compete, and then they have an off season of conditioning and rest. Our own lives can benefit from the same intentional seasons.

067: Healing Through Pranayama Breathwork with Carianna Hebert

We all know taking a few deep breaths can help us calm down when we’re feeling anxious, but do you know about the healing power of Pranayama breathwork? In this episode, Carianna Hebert walks us through the basics of breathwork, including what it is, how it sounds and feels, and the transformative power of this practice. If you’re curious about exploring breathwork for its therapeutic benefits, this is the episode for you!

Carianna Hebert, PCC, RYT is a certified coach, teacher, healer, artist, athlete, storyteller and entrepreneur. A former Emmy-award winning producer with the NFL, Cari transformed her passion for stories into a lifestyle of empowering others to out-create the narratives of the past and be more themselves in life and in business. A supporter of startup ecosystems, Cari serves as a leadership coach for conscious brands looking to build without burnout. She also serves her clients to heal the past and break karmic patterns through 1:1 breathwork healing sessions and meditation. Cari is trained in Pranayama breathwork, an active breathing meditation designed to clear stuck energy and restore the body to equilibrium.

Some key takeaways on breathwork are:

  • Breathwork is an active healing meditation that involves intentional inhaling and exhaling. It can be used for trauma healing, energy management, and creative recovery.
  • If you have anxiety, you might notice you experience shallow breathing often, which is one of our body’s ways of avoiding certain feelings. Deep breathing brings those feelings to the surface, which is so crucial for healing.
  • Breathwork can also bring up physical reactions to your emotions, and it’s important to pay attention to any resistance to those physical reactions. You might want to cry, scream, or laugh, and any and all reactions are valid.

066: The Signs of High-Functioning Anxiety with Tati Garcia, LPC

066: The Signs of High-Functioning Anxiety with Tati Garcia, LPC

Are you struggling with anxious thoughts, overwhelm, and overthinking, yet from the outside you’re seen as a hard working, high achieving, go-getter?  High-functioning anxiety may be what’s driving you and it’s a one-way ticket to burnout.

In this week’s episode of the Wake Up Call podcast, Tati Garcia, a licensed professional counselor and coach, is sharing the signs of high-functioning anxiety, where it comes from, and how you can start working through the symptoms for more peace and self-compassion.

Tati Garcia is a Licensed Professional Counselor and coach specializing in high-functioning anxiety and the host of the podcast Calmly Coping. Her passion lies in guiding ambitious achievers to overcome anxiety and burnout so they can feel calmer from within and stop overthinking everything. Tati has thousands of hours of experience helping clients and uses evidence-based approaches including mindfulness, self-compassion, and positive psychology to help high-achievers make improvements in their mindset, self-care, and work-life balance.

Some key learnings about high-functioning anxiety are:

  • High-functioning anxiety can present itself in a variety of ways. You might be really harsh on yourself and not allow yourself to rest, feel fear of missing out on opportunities so you never say no, and put your own needs last to put others’ needs first.
  • In school, you learn exactly what you need to do to get positive feedback and praise from your work and achievements. As adults with high-functioning anxiety, we don’t have that built-in feedback loop and chase it constantly with perfectionism and overworking.
  • Check in often with how you’re feeling. Give yourself permission to rest, recharge, and say “no” to things that are going to drain your energy. Just taking small breaks throughout the day, enjoying your coffee in silence in the morning, or going for walks are a great start.

065: Are Fear and Comparison Driving Your Actions? Here’s How to Break the Cycle

065: Are Fear and Comparison Driving Your Actions? Here’s How to Break the Cycle

If you find yourself rushing into action in response to an email, a social media post, or some sort of external stimuli, you might be letting fear or comparison take the driver’s seat. It’s a really easy cycle to get into, and in small doses these external factors can be good motivators. But if you find yourself in frantic reaction mode often, this episode has some tips and tools to help you pause and find more clarity so you can respond with ease.

Resources mentioned:

Some key takeaways from this episode are:

  • Pay attention to moments where you spring into action in response to an external stimulus (think: running to a workout class as soon as you see someone’s “perfect beach body” on Instagram).
  • Before you act, pause and get curious about the feelings and motivations behind the action you’re about to take. Check out the feelings wheel from the Calm app and see if you can pinpoint specific feelings.
  • Once you pinpoint the feeling, think about where that feeling might be coming from. What’s triggering you in this moment? Journal or meditate on it for just a few minutes and then make an empowered choice on what action you want to take next.

064: Setting Emotional Boundaries to Protect Your Energy

064: Setting Emotional Boundaries to Protect Your Energy

If you’re the first person to always jump in and help someone, even if they haven’t asked you to, and you’ve kind of built your identity around being the “fixer,” this is the episode for you. I’m sharing some recent thoughts I’ve had around setting emotional boundaries, which require us to say “no” to things that drain our emotional and mental energy and leave none for ourselves. If you’re constantly exhausted because you give everyone but yourself your precious emotional energy, this is the episode for you.

Some key takeaways on emotional boundaries:

  • Write out a list of your core values and what’s most important to you. Get super clear on the words that describe how you want to feel and show up on a regular basis. If sharing your emotional energy is going to compromise your values at a given time, you need to say “no” and set that emotional boundary.
  • Something we have to confront when setting emotional boundaries is that we don’t have full control over every situation, especially the actions of others. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but letting that go is an important boundary to set.
  • If you relate to constantly feeling depleted and exhausted because you’re constantly giving your emotional energy to others instead of to yourself, you need stronger emotional boundaries. It’s crucial for your mental well being to do so.

063: Being Content With Your Life Does Not Mean You’re Settling

063: Being Content With Your Life Does Not Mean You’re Settling

Do you feel content with your life, just the way it is today? If you’re not, you are definitely not alone. And if you are, you might feel strange saying so because somewhere along the line, being “content” became synonymous with “settling.” In this episode, I’m exploring what it means to constantly be striving for more rather than recognizing when we’re content, and what might be holding us back from feeling like we’re enough just as we are.

Some key takeaways on feeling more content:

  • When we allow being “content” to be synonymous with “settling,” we’re operating under the assumption that we are never enough just as we are at any point. That simply isn’t true. You are enough even if you haven’t accomplished all your goals.
  • Get quiet enough with yourself to really tune into your thoughts, what you have in your life, and your values. We spend so much time consuming and comparing that we rarely take stock of who we are and what we have long enough to feel good about it.
  • Limit or eliminate distractions that are keeping you from being in touch with your own thoughts and beliefs about what “enough” is. This might be social media, watching TV, or even certain people that cause you to doubt yourself.

062: The Gap of Disbelief | How to Achieve Your Goals Even When Self-Doubt Gets In the Way

062: The Gap of Disbelief | How to Achieve Your Goals Even When Self-Doubt Gets In the Way

Do you have a goal for your life, or your business, or your career, that feels so far away from you that it almost feels impossible to reach? Maybe you want to reach a certain revenue goal, but it feels impossible because you’ve been stuck at your current income for years. Or maybe you want to run a half marathon, but a 5K is a struggle for you right now. That big goal we’ve never reached before can feel impossible when we’re looking at the gap of disbelief. In this episode, I’m sharing how to overcome that gap so you don’t give up on yourself and your biggest dreams.

Resources mentioned:

Some key takeaways on crossing the gap of disbelief:

  • Stay focused and clear on your goal. When you reach the gap of disbelief, you might feel the urge to turn around and abandon your goal, retreating back to what’s comfortable. Don’t do it! You owe it to yourself to keep moving forward and fix your eyes on the prize.
  • Be consistent. It can be really discouraging when we’re working really hard and taking all the right actions, but we still haven’t reached the goals. Especially if you’ve been at it for years, it’s easy to want to give up. Slow and steady work can have huge rewards in the long run. Keep at it.
  • Pay attention to the negative self-talk that’s coming up for you. Instead of letting them in and agreeing with them, simply listen to the thoughts, and take them as evidence of the mental clutter you need to clean up before you move forward.

061: Tools for Calming Yourself Down From an Anxious State

061: Tools for Calming Yourself Down From an Anxious State

We’ve all experienced times when we’ve suddenly felt an onslaught of overwhelming and racing thoughts that feel so tangible they make you dizzy, lightheaded, and unable to breathe. In this episode, I’m sharing my toolkit of exercises that can be done wherever and whenever stress strikes you so you can calm yourself down and pull yourself back into the present moment.

Need help creating a plan to manage the stress in your daily life and routines? Send me a DM on Instagram to learn more about my 12-week 1:1 coaching program.

A few tactics for calming yourself down when you’re stressed are:

  • Focus on taking the right kinds of breaths. Our breathing can get shallow and quick when we’re anxious and overwhelmed, so focus on taking deep breaths where you can feel your belly expand as you inhale.
  • Human touch can be very powerful for calming us down. If you’re overwhelmed, place your hand on your chest and start talking to yourself with reassuring words like “it’s going to be okay,” “I’m safe,” or “you’ve got this and you can get through it.” You can say these words in your head, but hearing your own voice can really calm you down.
  • Notice the environment around you and call out what you’re seeing, feeling, hearing, and smelling. This pulls you out of your head of racing thoughts and into your environment and the present moment.

060: Surprising Signs That You’re Living Out of Alignment

060: Surprising Signs That You’re Living Out of Alignment

When I was at the height of my anxiety and burnout, I had a great-on-paper life, so it was really difficult to recognize that something wasn’t right. There were several signs that I was out of alignment, and in this episode I’m sharing all the signs and symptoms that might be telling you the same. If you’ve been feeling off but can’t quite put your finger on why, this is the episode for you.

If you need help creating some routines that implement things you love to do, as well as some necessary self-care, into your week, send me a DM on Instagram about my 12-week coaching program. This 1:1 program is designed to carve out one hour per week for you to get clarity on where you’re out of alignment and how to get back into it. I work with busy, overwhelmed women, so the actionable takeaways each week are tiny and attainable goals you can add into your currently hectic schedule. I can’t wait to connect with you!

Some signs you may be out of alignment are:

  • Because we live in a culture that prioritizes productivity over well-being, you may have accepted that you’ll always be in a constant state of burnout and overwhelm. Being easily irritated, fatigued, and unmotivated are all signs of burnout and they don’t have to be the norm.
  • Seeking external validation or pleasure are both signs that you’re out of alignment. If you need constant reassurance from those around you in order to feel content, or if you’re frequently numbing out with content consumption or alcohol, you may be living out of alignment with yourself.
  • If you are living for the weekends and spend your weekend avoiding any and all feelings about the upcoming week, it means you’re missing elements of things you love in your day-to-day routines.

059: What I Wish I’d Known at the Height of My Anxiety and Burnout

059: What I Wish I’d Known at the Height of My Anxiety and Burnout

Since I started taking on clients again, I’ve been doing a lot of reflection on what I wish I’d known when I was going through the height of my anxiety and burnout. When you’re in the thick of it, it’s really difficult to gain the perspective needed to understand how to care for yourself and change some of the behavioral patterns that are keeping you stuck. In this episode, I’m sharing all the things I wish I had understood then to hopefully help you have that perspective in this season.

Do you need some support with navigating a season of burnout and setting up habits to prevent it in the future? Send me a DM over on Instagram to learn more about my 12-week coaching program!

Resources mentioned:

Some things I wish I’d know when I was at my most anxious point:

  • Your mind cannot overpower your physical symptoms when it comes to chronic stress. You can’t “think” yourself into a relaxed state, and your body is keeping score of the anxious thoughts and feelings you’re having. Rest, pull in fresh air with deep breaths, move your body, and take care of yourself during anxious moments.
  • You can’t fix people or take their problems away. If other people’s hurt or hardships are making you feel anxious or worried, it’s still not your responsibility to try to fix their pain. That person is capable of solving their problems and you depleting yourself won’t allow you to be supportive to them through their struggles.
  • Pay attention to patterns of perfectionism, people pleasing, and overall trying to fix and control everything around you. A lot of times we write these off as just being a part of our personality, but if you look a little closer you might find that these behaviors pop up when we’re going through seasons of increased anxiety.
