Previewing the Qatar 2022 World Cup & USMNT, featuring Jake Landau from It's Called Soccer

We take a break from our regularly scheduled expat investing programming to dive into a rapidly approaching international event that may be of interest to our audience of Americans abroad – the 2022 World Cup.

While financial advisors Stan Farmer, CFP®, J.D., and Keith Poniewaz, Ph.D., have quite the knowledge of soccer, with a particular focus on the U.S. Men's National Team, we wanted to bring in an outside guest with an even greater breadth of expertise on the subject. Enter Jake Landau of the It's Called Soccer YouTube channel. Coincidentally enough, Jake is an American who recently returned to the United States after living abroad. So between his international living experience and love of soccer, he fits right in with our team.

In this episode, Stan and Keith get the lowdown from Jake on the USMNT ahead of the 2022 Qatar World Cup, break down Group B (the group the U.S. is in), make predictions, and more. To check out Jake's channel or to find our resources dedicated to investing and financial planning for U.S. expats, check out the link section below.

Investing in the U.S. for Non-Americans

Investing in the U.S. for Non-Americans

Are you a nonresident alien or non-U.S. citizen looking to invest in the U.S.?

Whether you’re part of a cross-border family or simply a non-U.S. citizen trying to invest in the U.S., there are quite a few myths and misconceptions about investing in the U.S. as a non-American. We haven’t touched on this subject before, but we’ve still had a recent deluge of inquiries about investing in the U.S. as a foreigner. So we thought it was time to cover this subject more in-depth in what’s likely to be a multi-part series on the podcast.

In this episode, Keith, Stan & Syl cover the background on the topic and dive into the complications of investing in the U.S. as a non-American from both an inheritance perspective and income tax perspective. They also define U.S. situs assets and non-U.S. situs assets, and how the situs status can impact your portfolio.

Questions about investing in the U.S. as a non-U.S. citizen or nonresident alien? Send them to us, and we might feature them on a future episode of the podcast. You can also reach out to our team and speak directly with an advisor through the links section below.

What is Expatriation? An Introduction to Covered vs. Uncovered Expat Status

What is Expatriation? An Introduction to Covered vs. Uncovered Expat Status

As obvious as it sounds, one of the keys to U.S. expat status is the process itself of expatriation. Living as an American abroad is one thing, carrying its own set of financial and investing hurdles and complications. But truly renouncing your U.S. citizenship brings about its own set of obstacles.

In this episode of Gimme Some Truth for Expats, our team of U.S. expat financial advisors – Stan Farmer, CFP®, J.D.; Syl Michelin, CFA; and Keith Poniewaz, Ph.D. – delve into the subject of expatriation, the first of what is sure to be multiple episodes on this subject (because there's a lot of ground to cover). Speaking of cover, this edition is primarily dedicated to going over what it means to be a covered expat, and the boxes you would have to check to reach covered expat status. There's enough there to warrant an entire episode, so while our trio briefly touches on how covered expat status may impact your financial situation, we'll go more in-depth on that specific subject in an upcoming episode.

Questions about covered expat status? Or questions about your particular situation? Send us a message at podcast@walknercondon.com, and we may feature them on an upcoming episode – in addition to answering whatever your question might be.

The Rise of the Dollar: Exploring the Factors at Play in the Renewed Strength of the Dollar

The Rise of the Dollar: Exploring the Factors at Play in the Renewed Strength of the Dollar

This was an episode that first appeared on the Gimme Some Truth feed, but we felt the topic was just as important to U.S. expats and Americans living abroad. After all, the currency markets obviously carry international implications. And as Syl points out, the strength of the dollar means it's a great time to be an American traveling abroad (as long as you can get there in a somewhat inexpensive fashion).

Syl Michelin, a Chartered Financial Analyst and U.S. expat financial advisor, sits down with Nate Condon – one of the founding partners of Walkner Condon – to dissect what's happening with the U.S. dollar. Together, they raise the question – what does a strong dollar mean for the markets? As part of that discussion, they dive into why the dollar is so important on the international stage and conjecture about whether the strength of the dollar is due to the dollar itself, or the underperformance of the other main currencies.

Questions about this topic? Send an email to podcast@walknercondon.com or check out the links section below.

From the Expat Archives: Discussing Digital Nomad Visas With Glenn Jones, CEO of Bermuda Tourism Authority

From the Expat Archives: Discussing Digital Nomad Visas With Glenn Jones, CEO of Bermuda Tourism Authority

A long time ago – March 2021 to be exact – we brought a special guest, Glenn Jones of the Bermuda Tourism Authority, onto Gimme Some Truth to discuss an expat topic beginning to pick up steam – Digital Nomad Visas. As we progress into the third year with COVID still part of our lives, many workers are still working remotely full-time. In some cases, full-time remote work has become the standard (unless you're Elon Musk & Tesla). So with work-from-anywhere work still very much in the mix, we thought it would be worthwhile to drop this episode from the archives and bring it to this feed for the first time. (This episode originally aired before we had our very own expat podcast).

Financial advisors Keith Poniewaz, Ph.D., and Stan Farmer, CFP®, J.D., virtually escape the Wisconsin winter for an episode, welcoming Bermuda Tourism Authority interim CEO Glenn Jones onto the podcast to dive into the topic of Digital Nomad Visas. COVID-19 has helped bring to light the numerous opportunities for Americans looking to work remotely for extended periods, while tourist hot spots like Bermuda have simultaneously sought to expand their offerings in new ways to combat the impact of the pandemic. The show covers the basics of Bermuda's program, including how to apply and qualifications that need to be met, Bermuda's strong response to the pandemic, tax implications of a visa, and more.

Can I Contribute to an IRA (or Roth IRA) as an Expat?

Can I Contribute to an IRA (or Roth IRA) as an Expat?

Whether it's Reddit, a Facebook group, or any of the other myriad online discussion forums for U.S. expats, whether or not you – a U.S. expat – can contribute to an IRA is typically one of the most discussed topics for Americans living abroad. The simple answer is yes, you can, as long as you have employment income. Outside of that, no one rule prohibits a U.S. expat from contributing to an IRA. But as Keith Poniewaz, Ph.D., puts it so aptly in this episode, "Can you contribute to an IRA as an expat? Yes. Should you? Maybe." Hence the need for this episode – and the corresponding article from Syl Michelin, CFA, who joined Keith on this episode.

Keith and Syl dig more into why an expat might, or might not, want to contribute to an IRA while living abroad. And because of things like Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, which you may have seen abbreviated as FEIE, and foreign tax credits, how much you're able to contribute to an IRA or Roth IRA can be more complicated, especially with a Roth.

Questions on IRAs, Roth IRAs, or anything else expat-related? Reach out to us using the links section below or send us a voice message on Spotify.

American Moving to Switzerland: Financial Planning and Investing Factors to Know as a U.S. Expat

American Moving to Switzerland: Financial Planning and Investing Factors to Know as a U.S. Expat

Not only is Walkner Condon Financial Advisors' Syl Michelin, CFA, a native of France, but he also spent several years living in Switzerland and holds a Swiss passport. His wealth of knowledge on investing and financial planning as an American in Switzerland is perhaps exceeded only by the copious cliches about watches and chocolate (though, surprisingly, there was only one such reference in this episode). But, as Syl, Stan Farmer, and Keith Poniewaz make note of in this introduction to Switzerland – another in our series of episodes about key countries for U.S. expats – there is much more to life in Switzerland, including booming tech and biopharma industries.

The big pillars that constitute financial life for U.S. expats in Switzerland are the canton system, the 26 member states of the Swiss Confederation, and the – drumroll, please – three-pillar pension system. Because of those cantons, your experience as an expat could be quite different depending on where you live. The good news across the board is the Swiss' treatment of capital gains, but you'll have to listen to the episode for more on that, Switzerland's mysterious fourth official language, and our team's budding idea for a horror novel staged in that region of Switzerland (we'd hate to spoil your audio appetite). If you have any questions about moving to Switzerland, or if you're a U.S. expat already in Switzerland, don't hesitate to reach out to our team.

Moving to Germany as a U.S. Expat - Financial & Investing Considerations to Keep in Mind

Moving to Germany as a U.S. Expat - Financial & Investing Considerations to Keep in Mind

We continue our country-specific journey for U.S. expats with another stop in Western Europe – Germany. Though we haven't dedicated a lot of written content previously to Germany – it's one of our New Year's resolutions to change that! – we know from visitors to our website for U.S. expats that it must be right up there among top destinations. Including the U.S., Germany ranks as our third-highest source of visitors, behind only the U.K, which was our first country-specific destination in our most recent episode. And, several sources back that claim up, listing the number of Americans in Germany as more than 200,000.

In the words of Syl Michelin – Walkner Condon's resident CFA® – Germany is generally a high tax jurisdiction. With that in mind, the journey to Germany centers a lot around the subject of taxation for Americans, whether that's a short-term stay or a long-term stay. Syl is joined on the episode by Stan Farmer, CFP®, J.D., and Keith Poniewaz, Ph.D., as our full team of U.S. expat advisors dives into all things Deutschland when it comes to finances and investing.

Taxes for Americans Abroad & U.S. Expats with Leo Zimny, CPA & Tax Director at Expat U.S. Tax

Taxes for Americans Abroad & U.S. Expats with Leo Zimny, CPA & Tax Director at Expat U.S. Tax

Though this episode originally aired on our main Gimme Some Truth feed prior to the launch of Gimme Some Truth for Expats, the topic of taxes is a vital one when it comes to the U.S. expat experience. That's why we felt it was imperative to include this introduction to U.S. expat taxes as part of the GST for Expats feed. You can read more about the episode below from the original description.

Walkner Condon international advisors Keith Poniewaz and Stan Farmer bring U.S. expat tax expert Leo Zimny, CPA, on the show to cover the basics of taxes for Americans abroad. While many people would prefer to steer clear of the topic of taxes, they are an integral part of a holistic financial plan, especially for U.S. expats and Americans considering a move abroad. Zimny, who is Tax Director for Expat U.S. Tax, touches on his career, which started with PwC, and his transition to working with international individuals. He also highlights some key areas for U.S. expats or prospective expats to keep in mind during, and after, their move abroad.

What is the Best Brokerage for Expats?

What is the Best Brokerage for Expats?

So what's the best brokerage for U.S. expats?

If that's not the question we hear most, then it certainly ranks right up there for the most-asked financial question when it comes to being an American abroad and trying to invest. Like any oft-searched, idiosyncratic inquiry, this question has no one right – or wrong – answer. The best version of a succinct response? "It depends."

Our team of expat advisors – Stan Farmer, CFP®, J.D.; Syl Michelin, CFA®; and Keith Poniewaz, Ph.D. – shed some light on a subject that can be frustrating and nerve-wracking, whether you're already abroad and your current brokerage is closing your accounts, or you're in the early stages of planning a move.
