Past the Forecast

The hurricane season continues to be one of the busiest in recent memory and in this week's episode, Adam and Joe talk about the rapid intensification of Delta and how it could impact the Gulf Coast.  Plus, the days may be getting shorter, but the temps are getting warmer, so what's up with that? And in this week's inbox the guys explain why they display weather symbols on the maps they use. 

The winds of change have brought the coolest air of the season to the region, which begs the question, "will it ever warm up again?"  Adam and Joe tackle that question and explain what the "second season" of severe weather is as it pertains to the Great Lakes region. In "What the Hail," the guys talk about the mysterious fireball spotted in the sky in the early morning of the last day of September. Plus, the rain canceled golf plans this week so Adam and Joe broke out the vintage Sega Genesis for their links fix. 

In “Tracking the Topics” Adam and Joe breakdown how tropical cyclone “Paulette” fizzled out and then reformed over the Atlantic. The guys then talk about how the upcoming temperature forecast will play a big role in the Fall Foliage outlook going forward. And in the inbox, Adam and Joe answer the question of “Why is it so cold on Fall mornings, but then becomes comfortable and mild in the afternoon?”

No guests this week, but there's still lots to talk about.  Adam and Joe discuss the wildfires out west and how the smoke has impacted the atmosphere and what we see when we look at the sky.  Plus they discuss Hurricane Sally and in "What the Hail," they discuss a new gas found on Venus and talk of colder temps on the way.

It's been an active hurricane season and there's a risk we could run out of names. In this episode Adam and Joe explain why we could see some hurricanes named for Greek letters of the alphabet. Plus there's talk of hummingbird heart rates, poor football weather,  and wild temperature swings, particularly a recent one in Denver. It's all punctuated by special guest and WANE 15 lifer Joe Carroll who shares how things have changed since he got in the business many moons ago.

Special guest and long time WANE 15 employee Chris Darby joins the podcast this week. Adam, Joe and Chris recap Hurricane Laura and share some facts and figures about the transition from meteorological summer to fall. Plus they chat about minor league sports, birds on weather radar, and Fort Wayne weather folklore.

With Hurricane Laura bearing down on the coasts of Texas and Louisiana, Adam and Joe discuss the potential impact ahead of it making landfall and tackle a question from the inbox regarding how the strength of hurricanes is determined. The Farmers' Almanac winter outlook has been released, but does it have any credence on what happens when the weather turns colder? And how early is too early when it comes to Halloween and Christmas decorations. 

Special guest Sierra Tufts joins the guys for this episode. The three recap the devastation suffered in Iowa from the August 10 derecho and how warning information was sent to the public and how that's interpreted from both a meteorologists perspective and the general public's perspective. The conversation then shifts to the record heat in Death Valley and why heat lightning is a myth. 

Nicholas fills in for Joe this week and he and Adam recap the Derecho from Monday and what it was like in-studio as the winds were howling. They discuss star gazing and the Perseid Meteor Shower. Then they debate the age-old question from the world of entertainment; Big Brother vs Survivor.

Twenty-five episodes that is. This week Adam and Joe recap Hurricane Isaias and discuss whether or not the name will be retired. In “What the Hail”, Joe explains how the recent cool down has caused him to start thinking about winter! And this week’s inbox question deals with the journey of becoming a meteorologist, especially shedding some light on the difficulty of the math courses involved.

In this episode, Adam and Joe dive into some comments that are less than courteous and speculate as to why people like to take shots at those in the weather profession. Has the recent rain helped the rainfall deficit? They'll  have the answer and it wouldn't be a Past the Forecast episode without some sports talk.

Joe Strus is back after a week away and talks with Adam about his visit to Cedar Point and an adventure at the zoo.  Plus the guys talk teamwork as it relates to a recent episode of severe weather and discuss something you may have wondered about: What causes wind?

This week Adam and special guest host Nicholas Ferreri discuss comet NEOWISE and "MegaFlash" lightning. Plus the return of 90° temperatures, heat index, and is using sweat to power devices the future?

This week Adam and Joe talk about the heat and humidity we are experiencing along with the rainfall deficit. Plus a discussion about the exciting and loud July 4th, and June snowfall out west. And the question from the Past the Forecast inbox deals with favorite ways to cool down.

Episode 20 features a very special guest; WANE 15 morning meteorologist Greg Shoup who shares his thoughts on how the business of forecasting the weather has changed since the 1980s.

This week Adam and Joe are joined by their first ever guest, WANE 15 Chief Meteorologist Nicholas Ferreri! We discuss the tornado outbreak of last year and how we go about severe weather coverage. Nicholas joined in on the Fort Wayne pizza debate and we learn how Nicholas got into meteorology.

Snowflakes filled the sky in mid-April, but is it really that unusual?  Adam and Joe answer that question and they discuss another deadly outbreak of tornadoes in the south. Plus Joe talks about whisking and muscle memory.

Even with the COVID-19 pandemic consuming much of our lives, Adam and Joe stay positive in this episode. In the "What the Hail!?" segment, the discussion delves into placing bets on the weather in lieu of sports betting.  And for the viewer question segment, you'll learn the difference between climate and weather.
