My guest is Miranda Cromwell. Miranda is a Theatre Director and she’s probably most famously known for co-directing Death of A Salesman with Wendell Pierce which started at The Young Vic before moving to the West End.

Miranda has been writing for the Bush Theatre, Talawa Theatre and Company Three. #92 Mercedes Benson: Be Your Best Self

#92 Mercedes Benson: Be Your Best Self

Hello and welcome to Season 3 of the Wanna Be Podcast. The podcast that takes you from where you are now to where you wanna be in 30 minutes or less.

For any of you listening I have a simple request. Get your phone out, head to Instagram and search @Contentisqueenhq and check out our new branding, typography and colour palette! I want to know what you think of it so leave comments or emojis on your fave colour combos. I love Indigo and Oatmeal.

A quick notice for any aspiring or current podcasters listening, if you’re looking for a cosy and affordable professional studio space head on over to contentisqueen.org to join the waitlist for our space.

Right, time to get onto what you came here for. Today’s guest is the personification of a multi-potentialite (refer to episodes 11 and 12 with Emilie Wapnick to learn more about multipotentialites). Back to Mercedes- Mercedes is the Brand Partnerships manager at Complex, a host and personality on Heels Off, a DJ- she’s DJ’d for some of the biggest names in the industry including Jaden Smith and Tiwa Savage and she’s an influencer and the Founder of Social Fixt.

Mercedes inspiration to start this business was built out of frustration. At the age of 24 she had the most amazing opportunity to work for the biggest tech company in the world. Once she arrived she realised very soon that she would be 1 of 1. Mercedes wanted to see other people like herself in boardrooms and in the ideation meetings. To solve this problem, Mercedes founded Social Fixt which uses social media to list jobs in the creative industry in the Facebook group and on the website. She also hosts events that encourage the BAME community to 'know their worth'.

I caught up with Mercedes at Red Bull Amaphiko to get the tea on how she finds the team to do it all and then some. In this episode we talk about focus, time management, diversifying your income, growing a brand, embracing being watched by others and behind the scenes of being an influencer. Let’s dive in! When Mercedes said people can be watching you to big you up, I was immediately  in my feelings! Isn’t that the absolute best way to look at life. There are so many people that want to see you win, yet social media will have you feeling scared to step out and share your gifts. No more- you’ve got this! You can find Mercedes on Instagram @mercedesfbenson and Social Fixt on Facebook Twitter and Instagram @SocialFixt

Just a reminder that I’ll  be opening a members-only recording studio for podcasters in South London! If you’re interested head to contentisqueen.org to join the waiting list.

#91 Keke Palmer: Stop Seeking Approval

#91 Keke Palmer: Stop Seeking Approval

Hello and welcome to Season 3 of the Wanna Be Podcast. The podcast that takes you from where you are now to where you wanna be in 30 minutes or less.

It’s been so long since I’ve been on-air and I’ve truly missed speaking to you! It’s been a crazy couple of months with some monumental changes for me and my career. For anyone that follows me or the podcast on social media you’ll know 2 things! 1) I’m no longer at the ShoutOut Network. 2) I’ve started my own company under Content is Queen and given everything a revamp. That’s right the colours logos everything is different.

I am beyond thrilled to bring you today’s episode! Today’s guest is the infamous Keke Palmer- yes, that’s right. There’s no gag here! While I personally think Keke needs no introduction, but I’ll give her one anyway because her resume stacked she is still out here working hard.

Keke Palmer is an actress, singer and television host. She’s actually the youngest woman to have her own TV show. Keke made her acting debut  Barbershop 2: Back in Business. You might have caught her in Akeelah and the Bee, Madea’s Family Reunion, and Scream Queens.

Keke most recently starred alongside Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu in the movie Hustlers!- If you haven’t seen it yet you can watch it via Amazon Prime, Google play and Apple. In today’s episode Keke and I talk about what she does to look after herself when she’s on set- so if you’ve got a busy lifestyle, be sure to take notes! Keke shares the important difference between justifying behaviour vs having empathy for the actions of others. We also get some insight on why she uses humour to manage anxiety and trauma. For the goal-getter in you we tackle what changes when you start to achieve your hopes and dreams. Just a quick note about the audio, we ended up using our back up recording as the original didn’t capture Keke’s side! So my apologies in advance it was too good to not put out plus it’s short and sweet so you’ll get past it. Let’s go!

I hope my fangirling over Keke didn’t distract you from all of the wisdom she dropped on this episode. She was an absolute dream to interview! If you’re a fan or just became one be sure to check her out in the movie Hustlers! I’ve seen it and really enjoyed it.

You can follow Keke on Instagram @keke or on Twitter @kekepalmer. Thank you so much for listening in.

Now that I’m now proudly running Content Is Queen- which you might recognise as the name of the women’s podcast festival I launched with ShoutOut a little over a year ago! I’m so pleased I get to carry on producing this vitally important event so stay tuned for the date on the next one. I’ll also be opening a members-only recording studio for podcasters in London! If you’re interested head to contentisqueen.org to join the waiting list.

Coral is also a visiting lecturer at Central School of Speech and Drama.   I wanted to interview Coral because chances are just like you, I’d never heard of a movement director before and I was intrigued as to how one finds themselves in the job so of course, I find out how Coral got started. We find out how to pick the projects you should say yes to for developing your career. As well as wrapping up on challenges and obstacles you might expect if you decide to follow in her footsteps. I’ve learned so much and it was kind of unexpected. If it wasn’t for my complete inability to do choreographed dancing I would happily look into some classes. #81 Mimi Leder: How To Tell Someone's Story

Hello and welcome to the Wanna Be Podcast. I’m your host Imrie! Wanna Be is the podcast that takes you from where you are right now to Where you Wanna Be in 30mins or less. Thank you for staying subscribed and listening in. You can subscribe for free and catch a brand new 30-minute episode every Wednesday if you enjoy this episode tell a friend, tweet me @wannabepodcast or screenshot and tag @wannabepodcast in your insta story. This week’s guest esteemed Director Mimi Leder, who’s behind the incredible movie On The Basis Of Sex- The Ruth Bader-Ginsburg biopic which is out in the cinemas as of February 22nd. It’s a fantastic watch that I highly recommend you go and see. RBG is a true feminist icon who infamously moved the needle on gender discrimination and women’s rights in the supreme court. Mimi Leder is a producer and Director. Her credits include On the Basis of sex, The Leftovers Deep Impact and Pay it forward. On the Basis of Sex is Mimi’s first feature film in 18 years following what she describes as ‘movie jail’. We don’t get into that but for some context Pay it Forward wasn’t as successful, and Mimi struggled to get hired as a Director afterwards, she believed this was in part due to her being a woman in a heavily male-dominated industry. In today’s episode, you will learn one of the best ways to deal with feedback and criticism, how you can progress in your career as a woman in male-dominated industries, and why it’s important that we are inclusive when hiring our crews. We jump straight in with why she said yes to ‘On the Basis of Sex’ after 18 years. Thank you so much for listening in. #80 Sadiq Khan: Becoming The Mayor

#80 Sadiq Khan: Becoming The Mayor

Hello and welcome to the Wanna Be Podcast. I’m your host Imrie! Wanna Be is the podcast that takes you from where you are right now to Where you Wanna Be in 30mins or less. Thank you for staying subscribed and listening in. Last season and the Black History Month special were an absolute dream to put together for you. Thank you for the new reviews as well! You can subscribe for free and catch a brand new 30 minute episode every Wednesday. This season will be a little different. The key changes are that there will be only 1 episode per week but it’ll still be short, sweet and double the amount of motivational goodness you’ve come to know and expect. This week’s guest should be very familiar to you it’s London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan! I had the pleasure of sitting down with the Mayor during the Behind Every Great City campaign. Sadiq Khan is a British politician serving as the Mayor of London since 2016. He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tooting from 2005 to 2016. He got his law degree from the University of North London. Before entering politics he was a solicitor specialising in human rights. Before becoming Mayor he held a number of positions including Minister of State for Communities in 2008, Minister of State for Transport, Shadow Secretary of State for Justice, Shadow Lord Chancellor and Shadow Minister for London. He was elected Mayor of London at the 2016 mayoral election, winning by the largest number of votes in one election of any politician in British history. In today’s episode the Mayor will show you how to look at the glass as half full, he shares how he handles the responsibility and subsequent blame when tragedy strikes. He reveals whether women and other BAME individuals should run for London Mayor and finally is it ever worth poshing up your voice to get ahead in politics or for any job really. We jump in with the Mayor sharing where he thought he’d end up in life if he wasn’t the Mayor. It’s not an easy job at all to be the Mayor but I personally feel very inspired by how optimistic and positive Sadiq was about the job and his overall commitment to helping others fulfil their potential. I’m not sure I could put up with 1% of what he does and still remain positive about people so I find him to be quite refreshing. To follow the Mayor you can do so @SadiqKhan and be sure to tell him that @wannabepodcast sent you :) Thank you so much for listening in. If you’re listening via the Apple Podcasts app please do me the small favour of spending 5 seconds to leave a rating. #79 Angie Thomas: Becoming An 'Overnight' Success

#79 Angie Thomas: Becoming An 'Overnight' Success

The Wanna Be Podcast is back for a Black History Month special and I’m going to be sharing the stories of phenomenal black women who are almost certainly making history with their work. I got to interview New York Times Bestselling author Angie Thomas. She wrote a book called The Hate U Give which I think you’ll like. It’s about a teenage girl called Starr who witnesses her friend die at the hands of the police. The book just got turned into a movie with Amandla Stenberg and it’s so good, you should see it. Honestly, it’s kinda a lot, there’s police brutality, #BlackLivesMatter dealing with white friends and microaggressions. It’s iconic! The film’s out now so go see it! I can’t wait for you to hear this episode, you’re on the path to success right now and Angie shares how she’s managing being social media in the face of sudden success. We talk about what it’s like to give up control on your work and how you can be a better activist and make real change in your community. Angie is on a whirlwind of success and to be honest I just wanted to know how she was doing... Don’t forget to head out to the cinema to see The Hate U Give it is remarkable and like Angie says the start of a conversation. You can find Angie on Instagram on @AngieThomas Be sure to share this podcast with a friend who’s a bit lost and doesn’t know what they want to do. You can do this by tagging them and @wannabepodcast on both Twitter and Instagram. Also feel free to screenshot the episode you’re listening to in your insta stories and I’ll reshare them. For detailed show notes, photos, freebies and top quotes from this episode visit wannabepodcast.com. I’ll be updating the show notes at the end of each month. This is the last episode in the Black History Month special it has been a pleasure to create these episodes and introduce you to phenomenal black women. Special thanks to Abadesi Osunsade, Vashti Harrison, Amber Cabral, Amandla Stenberg and of course Angie Thomas. I’ll catch up with you in 2019! #78 Amandla Stenberg: Feeling Like You're Enough (The Hate U Give)

#78 Amandla Stenberg: Feeling Like You're Enough (The Hate U Give)

The Wanna Be Podcast is back for a Black History Month special and I’m going to be sharing the stories of phenomenal black women who are almost certainly making history with their work. Omg I’m screaming inside about this week’s guest! My darlings I got to sit down with Amandla Stenberg who played Rue in the Hunger Games, she made the incredible viral video on Cultural Appropriation, and is also the lead actress in When Hands Touch- Directed by former guest Amma Asante too name a few and she’s only 20! I got to enjoy her light, her honesty and all of her charming wisdom. As you may have seen already Amandla is the lead in the new The Hate U Give movie based on the Angie Thomas novel by the same name which is out now- I cannot recommend it enough. Amandla and I got chatting about lots of things that might interest you. We talked about activism, self-care, and how she protected herself from the backlash she faced for not being ‘black’ enough to play Starr in The Hate U Give. After reading a bunch of articles about how much Amandla’s teenage life mirrored Starr’s I was curious to know how she played a character like Starr when they had so many overlapping experiences. Make sure you head out to the cinema to see The Hate U Give it is honestly phenomenal and it left me in my feelings for days afterwards. Amandla does a great job and I couldn’t be more pleased to have had the opportunity to sit down with her and share that experience with you. You can find her on Instagram on @Amandlasponsored Be sure to share this podcast with a friend in need of some career direction. You can do this by tagging them and @wannabepodcast on both Twitter and Instagram. Also feel free to screenshot the episode you’re listening to in your insta stories and I’ll reshare them.
