Podcast Interview with USMC Veteran Shane "Broken Jarhead" Cunningham

Podcast Interview with USMC Veteran Shane "Broken Jarhead" Cunningham

My name is Shane Cunningham, and I’m the owner of Broken Jarhead. BJH is motivated to bring awareness to mental health in veterans by speaking the quiet parts out loud. I started by making vulgar art to get some cheap laughs and cheer up veteran friends during COVID last year, and evolved into stickers patches, and challenge coins. Currently, BJH is creating an apparel line dedicated to being made in America, by American textiles, and assembled by Americans. Our inaugural line will be the RED Apparel Line which will have red accents and accessories to bring awareness to Remembering Everyone Deployed. We will be donating a pair of socks to deployed military with each sale.

PODCAST AWARDS: I learned about use of podcasts as a way to help veterans cope and heal from PTSD and other issues. I really like the idea of encouraging growth through action instead of being just another veteran company that says they want to bring awareness. I looked for an awards ceremony for podcasts and found iHeart obviously, and The People Podcast Awards. I couldn’t find anything for Veterans, so decided to create it – how hard could it be!? BJH is proud to announce the 1st Annual Veterans Podcast Awards which will be held on October 5th! Our custom trophy is made by a female vet owned trophy company locally. It will be a Golden War Hammer with a placard listing the details of the award and the Vet Podcast Award logo. What says Vet Podcasting better than a bludgeoning tool and a microphone?

NATIONAL MILITARY PODCAST DAY: We scheduled the awards ceremony on September 30, International Podcast Day – seemed fitting. Then discovered the other award show is the same day. So, being the rational person that I am, I filed the paperwork and paid the fee required to establish National Military Podcast Day! This occurs October 5th. Since Enduring Freedom began October 6/7, we thought we’d have a day of celebration before a day of remembrance.

WHY: One of the best ways to deal with PTSD and other issues is to talk! Many veterans use podcasting in a therapeutic way but quit too soon. We want to encourage the discourse by offering a free awards ceremony and celebrating a National Day! We want to encourage active duty and vets alike to keep pushing and never give in to the demons! SPONSORSHIPS: In order to keep our commitment to encouraging growth through action, we recently began sponsoring DV Gaming. They are a great group of veterans that play an array of video games, stream and discuss veteran issues we face, and hold events to raise money for charities that help veterans. We are proud to have the opportunity to be a sponsor!

Podcast Interview with USAF Veteran and Congressional candidate Mariela Roca

Podcast Interview with USAF Veteran and Congressional candidate Mariela Roca

Dr. Mariela Roca is a mother, veteran, and dedicated civil servant. Raised by a strong and independent single mother, Mariela knows all too well how hard work, sacrifice, and dedication are key to living a meaningful and successful life.

Mariela was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and at an early age moved to Queens, NY with her mother and older brother. She obtained a public school education, which continued when her family moved back to Puerto Rico at the age of 13. There, she finished middle and high school and attended the University of Puerto Rico for her first year of college.

Inspired by her older brother’s military service within the United States Marine Corps, she decided to herself enlist in the United States Air Force. During her time in the Air Force, Mariela served as a Medical Logistician providing lifesaving Medical Logistics support to military warfighters across all services both stateside, and while deployed overseas.

While on her second deployment, tragedy struck when her mother, Lydia, was unexpectedly diagnosed with Stage-4 Glioblastoma Multiforme, a fast-growing and aggressive brain tumor. Mariela quickly became her primary caregiver and knows firsthand how the stress and burden of caring for a sick loved one can take on someone. In addition, Mariela understands the importance of making prescription drugs affordable, especially for life-saving drugs.

After her military service, Mariela relocated to the Frederick area and continued her Medical Logistics career as a Federal Employee working for the United States Army at Fort Detrick. Mariela holds a Master of Business Administration from Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD and a Doctor of Business Administration from the University of Maryland Global Campus.

Mariela currently lives in Frederick, MD with her two children. They also have a rescue Chihuahua dog named Annie. In her free time, Mariela enjoys spending time at home and also enjoys camping and traveling with her family

Podcast Interview with Army Veteran & CEO Carrie Beavers

Podcast Interview with Army Veteran & CEO Carrie Beavers

It happened one night while sleeping in an open bay at Army AIT. If you didn’t want yelled at by a drill sargeant the whole time you were making your bed you slept on top of the covers. I also slept in PT uniform of a tshirt and shorts on the top bunk. I was woke up by a man’s (drill sargeant) hand slowly moving up my leg up over my body, and down my arm. I opened my eyes and when I saw him standing I immediately closed my eyes and froze. I could not move. The events that happened that night changed my life forever at age 18. I was afraid to report it at the time. I was one way a happy, trusting, PTSD free mindset. After I was depressed, rolled up in a ball on the floor crying, not knowing why. I was in complete denial. The moment I left I suppressed the incident ever happened.

Germany was my first duty station in 1991 during the Gulf War. I went from not drinking and never trying drugs to drinking excessively and doing a variety of drugs. Anything I could do to numb my feelings, and not face the pain. I did not know that I had PTSD. I just knew something was wrong.

I dated my future husband in Germany and we had a very on and off again relationship. It was hard for me to trust, or respect a man. We married in 1993 and I transitioned out of the Army to Ft. Bragg where he was stationed. I had a very hard time transitioning to civilian life. I joined the Army Reserves and was assigned with the 82nd Aviation as support. I got a civilian job in sales. I was fired because I could not make the sales quota. It felt like being thrown into another world and being expected to know how to do the job. After only 4 months out of active duty I reenlisted active duty Army as a Combat medic.

I was assigned to Womack Army Medical Center. I went from being the soldier that was picked for having the best uniform to escort the Generals around to not getting along with my chain of command. I was demoted and later on earned back the rank. I was the medic that the Army nurses came to do things because I was great at my job. I was assigned to Smoke Bomb Hill Family Practice to take care of Special Forces family Members. I helped manage the clinic. I struggled with getting along with my chain of command once again. I had separated from my husband at the time multiple times.

Still not knowing I had PTSD or what PTSD was. I just knew that I was would self sabotage my life off and on. I worked in stressful jobs as a nurse in the ER and other areas of healthcare. I felt drawn to the stress. Fast forward to 2019 I was really struggling. I was tired of my own shit for the last 30 years. I was considering suicide and was in a very low place and felt stuck there. I reached out to a veteran group for help. I started to notice that multiple vets were expressing they wanted to end their life. I reached out to them as a good listener and someone they could relate to.

I started working with a Veterans crisis team and I saw that I was making a difference in other veterans lives and giving them hope. I was still struggling myself with suicidal thoughts. I decided to go to the VA for help. I put in a claim for PTSD related to MST and after 2 years and much frustration I was awarded 100 percent. The counseling at the VA helped me, combined with networking with other veteran groups online. I networked with other veteran businesses online and found a community of support that I has really changed my life. My advice would be to get help early on. I let PTSD control my life for too long.

I started my own business Soldier Girl Coffee and affiliate program to help inspire other veterans that you can have PTSD and still find healthy coping mechanisms, and do anything you want to do in this life as long as you don’t give up. I found that CBD oil is a tool that has helped my PTSD. I am offering a 100% THC Free CBD infused coffee in the hopes others will find it can help them also. Talking about anger with US Army First Sergeant Luis Alicea

Talking about anger with US Army First Sergeant Luis Alicea

Hello, I'm Luis Alicea, and I'm currently on active duty in the U.S Army, going on 20 years of active service and 21 years of total service to our nation. I will officially retire in August of 2021, culminating in my career as a First Sergeant.

I joined the Army on June 14, 2000 (Army Birthday), and served three years on active duty. In June of 2003, I transitioned into the reserve component of the U.S Army, where I served for nine months before enlisting on active duty for a second time.

In my career, I supported two peacekeeping missions, one to Saudia Arabia and one to Hungary. On both these missions, I served with Erik Castillo. I have also participated in four combat tours. Two tours in Iraq and two to Afghanistan. On my second tour to Iraq, I suffered wounds from a suicide vehicle born improvised explosive device. This event changed my outlook on life. I have also helped train future Army leaders in Morroco and Honduras. I've been stationed in Fort Bragg, NC twice, Baumholder, Germany, Fort Polk, LA, Anchorage, AK, Bloomington, IN, Dongducheon, Korea, and now Fort Drum, NY.

Upon retirement, I hope to work in the fitness industry as a strength and conditioning coach, helping people see their potential and helping young athletes learn about leadership and team development. I currently hold a USA Weightlifting Level 1 Certification, a Certified Weightlifting Performance Coach Certification, and a Certified Speed and Agility Coach Certification, both from NSPA. I'm also five classes away from a Bachelor of Science in Sports and Health Sciences with a concentration in Exercise Science.

Podcast Interview with USMC Combat Veteran Ben Martin

“Ben served as an Assault Amphibious Vehicle (AAV) crewman with the 7th Marine regiment out of 29 Palms, CA. In 2003 Ben participated in the invasion of Iraq with 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines. In 2004 and 2005 Ben deployed with the 31st MEU (SOC) out of Okinawa, Japan.

After his enlistment, Ben enrolled in to college and studied writing, web design, and branding between Portland Community College, Pacific University, and the Art Institute of Portland. In between classes he found a passion for small business, which propelled him into agency work and brand management.

In 2012 Ben helped launch a pilot non-profit aimed at rehabilitating veterans through permaculture. This program showed promise that agriculture can be an alternative treatment for Veterans suffering from PTSD and TBI. Looking for inspiration he found that the French Foreign Legion houses over 100 aging Legionaries on a vineyard chateau where they grow grapes, make wine, and find peace. Ben wondered – "Why not here?"

It wasn't until February 2014 that the idea of veteran viticulture re-emerged during a Walla-Walla wine trip with co-founders Ryan Mills and Paul Warmbier. Excited about the possibilities, the three launched Dauntless Wine Company that December!

On May 18th, 2017 Ben was awarded the Wine Studies "Emerging Leader" award for his efforts launching Dauntless Wine Company while attending the program. And in 2018 Ben graduated from the Chemeketa Wine Studies with an AAS in both winemaking and vineyard management.”

Interview with Army combat veteran and rapper Soldier Hard

Interview with Army combat veteran and rapper Soldier Hard

Jeff was born and raised in Vallejo, California. Being brought up in a military family, it was only a matter of time until Jeff enlisted at the age of 19. He left for his first tour in Iraq and eventually got “fed up” with his assignment and went AWOL, for which he was arrested and thrown in Army Jail for two months returning back home after wards. After the attacks on Sept. 11th, Barillo appealed to the Army and was allowed to re-enlist. He started leading convoys on missions in Iraq and experiences many ambushes, gunfights and explosions. After returning to base, most soldiers would work out or play computer games, but Barillo would return to his room and write/record raps about his time in Iraq, which is where his music career started. Jeff Barillo aka Soldier Hard aka The Voice. Jeff Barillo is an Iraqi war veteran who has found solace through the expression of music. Under the stage name Soldier Hard, Jeff has grown into massive popularity not only in the military community, from which most of his audience hail from, but also with the general public. He was even given the title “The Voice for our Troops.” Barillo’s popularity seems to have no stopper as he turned down a contract with Sony Entertainment in hopes of “holding off for something better.” He has collaborated with many other veteran/military inspired acts, and founded his own record label REDCON-1 Music Group. Jeff began his career on an Army base with a small microphone and a laptop. After returning home, he performed at some local bars and clubs, and putting his music out on social media, which eventually allowed his music gain more popularity. His songs tell stories of our soldiers and the hardships they face, which attracts a large crowd of military supporters and soldiers. Barillo was diagnosed with PTSD after returning home and a lot of his music is based around it and receiving treatment, particularly Group Therapy. After becoming fairly well known, Barillo founded DEFCON-1 Music Group. The group’s mission is to help control the symptoms of PTSD through the use of music therapy not only to help the veterans but also their families. Interview with Army combat veteran and Purple Heart recipient Derrick Pinckney

Interview with Army combat veteran and Purple Heart recipient Derrick Pinckney

About Derrick, "For me, fitness is not just about hitting the gym; it is also about an inner happiness and an overall well-being." ~ Rakul Preet Singh ~ In high school, I wasn't physically active. I remember being in the gym, forcing and trying to motivate myself to be more active. The motivation was just not there at the time. As I got older, I constantly worked harder to be physically active and motivated myself to be more proactive. It was hard for me to understand why the passion for being physically active was not there during my youth. I was raised around people that were physically active. My mother was a nurse in the military during the Vietnam War. She stressed the importance of healthy living and exercise. My uncle, Jackson "Rock" Pinckney, who was my biggest role model, was extremely physically active. He was a U.S. Army Veteran (Ret), medically retired law enforcement officer, fitness trainer and national bodybuilding champion, author and actor. My uncle also won several bodybuilding competitions and held the title of Mr. Fayetteville through the National Physique Committee, and the NPC Middle and Light Heavy Division Championship I attribute my passion for physical fitness to him. Before his death, he was helping me reach and achieve my fitness goals. After my oldest daughter was born, I made the decision to join the United States Army. I worked in combat. Being a soldier in the U.S. Army somewhat forced me to become more active because there really wasn't anything else to keep me entertained. It also helped me cope with the stressors of life. In 2005, I became a little more serious about physical fitness and strength training. I started trying different strength and conditioning techniques to help improve my overall strength, power, and endurance. During this time, I was stationed in Iraq. While completing an 18 month tour in Iraq I was seriously injured during a suicide bomber attack. The injuries I sustained left me physically and mentally scarred. I was diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injury(TBI) and PTSD Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. It took me a while to heal but I eventually realized that I was responsible for my own well-being and happiness. Physical fitness and strength training became my coping mechanism. This is what eventually led me to opening up my first Sport and Nutrition Online store called Genetic Push Supplements. My motivation for the online store diminished and I decided to close it after the first year. In 2016, I reopened the company under a new name, Warrior Genetics Lab. I came back motivated, stronger, and more attentive. My dreams for this company was much bigger. I plan to work harder to make sure this company develops and grows to its fullest potential. I want this company to be a success. Currently, the company is flourishing. It has twelve athletes represent my brand. We have started competing competitively in different states. my company also now have two sponsors; Community Awareness and Youth Boxing. Warrior Genetics Lab have given to numerous charities and so far has done one fundraiser for Veterans. There are numerous fundraisers in the works. One will be coming up this spring to support veterans. Interview with former MLB pitcher Arnie Costell

Interview with former MLB pitcher Arnie Costell

Born in 1952, a product of the 60s. Growing up in New York learning about life in one of the most fabulous times our world has known. I learned at a young age that being left-handed and able to throw a baseball faster than anyone around would open doors in many avenues for me. My mother instilled in me the belief of self success. I worked very hard to perfect my athletic skills and academic skills. I graduated from the State University of New York at Stony Brook New York with a degree in psychology. I played professional baseball for almost 10 years with "cups of coffee" with the New York Yankees. My competitiveness still makes me play against players 30 years younger than me. Baseball is definitely one of the keys to keeping me going. I still play hard. I'm very fortunate because in a very young age I learned many other things that are important to me today. Growing up I was deathly afraid of dogs, being bitten by a dog at an extremely young age. My mom got me my first dog, a Belgian Shepherd /boxer mix named Barkey. I love that dog. Since then I have had a few dogs. Everything from a shitzu, to German shepherds, to a very special one who was the first designer dog. Watson was part sheepdog and Labrador. He like to be known as a sheepador. Everyone else called him a mutt. It's amazing but, I really believe I had something special with Watson. Something like the same heartbeat. Something like nonverbal communication. Because of Watson's afflictions a business was born featuring the Bottom's Up Leash. Watson's disabilities were for reason. I truly believe that. Over 100,000 dogs and now being helped because of Bottom's Up Leash. I created it after watching a show on mountain climbing. I still play baseball, I paint: watercolors and acrylics, and love to be outside. Scuba diving is one of my passions. I also write. Life is short and I do not know what is on the other side. I have my beliefs but I better cram as much as I can on this side. My favorite word is passion. Whatever you do if you have passion you are on the right track. Whatever you believe if you have passion you are on the right track. Even if we disagree and you and I are both passionate about our sides, if we respect each other the discourse will be awesome. Growing up with my mom in New York, it was instilled on me to reach for the stars. My mom taught me that reaching for the stars is the way to go because while other people are reaching for the moon your higher attempts and expectations keep you in front. I love what I do and have a lot of fun doing it. Interview with Army Veteran Robyn McClure

Interview with Army Veteran Robyn McClure

Hi everyone! I Grew up in Vancouver, Wa. I joined the Army when I was 17. I Left for basic training to Ft. Lennerdwood, MO 2 weeks after graduating in 2001. I enlisted as a Military Police then 9/11 happened during my AIT. I then was given orders to Ft. Riley, KS. We went from Kansas to DC for about 7 months in support of Operation Nobel Eagle which was to guard the Pentagon during reconstruction. We then went back to Kansas to train and prepare for deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I deployed from March 03 to April 04.

After deployment, I was laterally transferred to the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and took over as the NCOIC of the narcotics team for a year. I then got orders for a PCS to Korea April of 2005. I served there till January of 2006.

I left Army even though I was a lifer at heart. I was pregnant and getting divorced so I came home back to WA. I fell in love with the medical field in Iraq and had training as a CLS (Combat life saver). It was the most fulfilling part of my short Army career. I left as a SGT (P) acting platoon SSG.

I obtained my Associates Degree in Medical Assisting... hoping to become an RN one day. Having two little babies and being a single mom.... it was hard. Working 2 or 3 jobs, night school. And then no one would hire me for MA.

I Went back to school for massage therapy and became a healer and believer in naturopathic medicine now. I own a mobile massage business and work in a natural health clinic as a massage therapist. I'm a home owner, I'm a single momma to 3 beautiful, amazing children. I've survived a lot of heart break, losing loved ones, attempted suicide of ex husband, military sexual trauma, PTSD.... etc. I'm an open book and would love nothing more than to help my brothers and sisters in arms, my fellow Veterans and fellow healers. Thank you!!!

Interview with Army combat veteran and private contractor David Beale

My name is David Beale, I am a US Army veteran and security professional. I am currently working in Europe as a Private Military Contractor and Close Protection Operative. I was born in British Columbia Canada and immigrated to the United States when I was 4 years old. I grew up in the Seattle area and tried out college and various jobs before deciding on joining the Army at age 25.

I joined the Army October 2010 as a 13B cannon crew member. I served for 8 years in 10th Mountain Division and 2nd Cavalry Regiment. After 4 years being very cold in New York and 4 more years being very cold in Germany, I decided to end my time in the Army and move forward. I loved being a Soldier but I wanted more control over my life then the Army allowed. I separated in June of 2019 and moved to Poland where I started my new carrier in the security industry.

As of now, I have 2 peace keeping deployments to Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. I also have 2 deployments to Afghanistan and multiple smaller contracts around Europe. I am a graduate from the European Security Academy and I continue to work in the private military and close protection industry. I am a big advocate of security contracting work for veterans and try to dispel some of the rumours and misinformation about the industry. In my time between contracts, I play homemaker, taking care of my two girls (during covid surviving may be a better word), working on the house, and keeping fit for my next contract.
