Poetry & Piano

Poetry & Piano

D.K. McKenzie—Warwick poet, pianist, and founder of The Poe Underground, a spoken word and music project—plays an original piano composition under his recording of Meeting at Night by Robert Browning and Honeymoon and an unnamed poem by D.K. McKenzie.

Meeting at Night

The grey sea and the long black land;

And the yellow half-moon large and low;

And the startled little waves that leap

In fiery ringlets from their sleep,

As I gain the cove with pushing prow,

And quench its speed i' the slushy sand.

Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach;

Three fields to cross till a farm appears;

A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch

And blue spurt of a lighted match,

And a voice less loud, thro' its joys and fears,

Than the two hearts beating each to each!

Honeymoon

A splash of rain as you dash for cover

into the maze

into the gauntlet of societies' (razor) blades

All of a sudden and suddenly

monstrous jealousy knocks loud

without warrant or justice

Jealousy arrives on time (early)

to mangle the moon's glorious radiance

A total and complete disruption of a honeymoon

(unnamed)

With poetry as in life you can say a lot using silence

The spaces that fill in time

the words that aren't spoken say much

truly speaking volumes

Silence can be a loud crack of thunder in reverse

a sucking, reversing, volume

that shifts the air

that is felt in the soul and in the heart

Silence can be a killer in fact

Sometimes when we are silent we are the ones doing the killing

Watch D.K. create his keyboard solos for Meeting at Night, Honeymoon, and his unnamed poem.

Songs from In Lieu of Flowers: Broken

Songs from In Lieu of Flowers: Broken

Join Dave Englund, singer-songwriter, guitarist, and founder of Warwick Americana band In Lieu of Flowers, for a track-by-track look at the band’s self-titled, debut album.

Discover the story behind a song, and listen to the complete tune.

Today, hear about the song Broken.

Visit the In Lieu of Flowers website.

In April 2021, singer-songwriter Dave Englund called his longtime friend, bassist and songwriter Steve Wolfe and asked if he'd be interested in creating an acoustic/electric Americana band, leaving the loud guitars in the rearview and opting for a more vocal-driven, vintage, thumping sound. Steve agreed.

After running a series of specific ads tailored to each musician's seat, the phone calls started coming in. Drummer, percussionist and vocalist Mark Vadnais showed up to play on Dave's back deck. Immediately the snaky soulful grooves started happening. Two weeks later, Chris Taylor answered the ad, jumped on deck, opened his Gretsch case, and delivered his unique guitar vibe, insuring his ticket in.

In November, an old acquaintance of Dave and Steve's, violinist and mandolin player Ernie Lau got the phone call asking him to come jam and see if he'd be a good fit for this new group. His focus on classical violin as opposed to bluegrass fiddle brought a new and needed color, and he joined in November.

Rounding out the band a month later in December was pedal steel guitarist Jim Wishart who answered the final ad, having been a guitarist for many years but only recently started playing the steel guitar, his musicality and playing coated every song he played on. Jim was in and In Lieu of Flowers was complete!

The Little Blue Boat

The Little Blue Boat

Down a long corridor and up a hidden staircase is a magical world.

Open the gates and follow the river until you reach a little, blue boat—dappled with sunlight, gliding along under big white clouds—where Miss Christine sits conversing with Warwick’s children.

Listen in and discover what they’re talking about today.

Christine Kayal has been a children’s librarian at Warwick Public Library for 24 years and a book lover her whole life. She spends her commute to and from work listening to audiobooks which she absolutely believes counts as reading.
