Does God Care About My Self-Esteem?

Does God Care About My Self-Esteem?

There are some very real sinful issues that get mixed in with the concept of self esteem, but at the same time there are also very real needs regarding self esteem that arise but are shoved aside or even rebuked. In this episode let’s look carefully at how to understand self esteem in a godly way.

Each Christian Doing Their Part

Each Christian Doing Their Part

When we hear messages about not wasting our lives but saying yes to the calling God has on our lives, we can easily be pulled in one of two directions—pride and ambition, or passivity and living for self. The call for every Christian is actually simple: not to be a great Christian, but just to be greatly Christian.

How to Rightly Respond to the Gospel

How to Rightly Respond to the Gospel

Many believers get to the point where we see our sin, we see our need, we see our utter insufficiency, but don’t know how to move forward rightly from there. In that moment, there are some responses that arise from lies or from our own flesh that keep us from being able to take hold of Christ, walk forward, and produce the fruit of righteousness.

Ephesians 1:17-24 Spiritual Wisdom (Scripture Study & Commentary)

Ephesians 1:17-24 Spiritual Wisdom (Scripture Study & Commentary)

The wisdom found outside of Christ is very different from the wisdom of Christ. We can pursue things intellectually, but the pursuit of the wisdom of Christ is spiritual. What does this mean? What does this look like for the believer?

Morality Instead of Christianity

Morality Instead of Christianity

Christianity is about doing what is right, but we will never walk in the righteousness of God if we aim at morality. The ways of God are much more than a moral system, and cannot be fulfilled by those who are unwilling to walk by the Spirit. The Christian who lives by the spirit is more moral than anyone, but they don’t get there by aiming at it; we as a church must continue to learn this.

Worthy of the Kingdom of God

Worthy of the Kingdom of God

What God has done in Christ is complete and absolutely undeserved by any believer. But what has God done this for? Scripture shows us that He has done this so we might live a holy life. But the call is still for us to walk worthy of Christ—not to earn salvation, but to glorify God by treating the righteousness of Christ and reward of His nearness as being worth a radically different life than that of the world around us, according to His holiness.

Youthful Passions

Youthful Passions

What are “youthful passions”? (2 Timothy 2:14-26) Paul is speaking about passions that influence believers of any age, though there is a reason young people are specifically warned about these things. It’s about the life we are building, the things we are pursuing and taking into our hearts with particular future in mind. These are the things that we are excited to spend our energy on because of how they benefit us, and while they are not all “bad” things, it matters which altar we pour out our lives on.

Ephesians 1:15-16 Christian Love (Scripture Study & Commentary)

What is love? When Paul praises the Ephesian Christians for their love for each other, what is he exactly commending? In a culture with a lot of ideas about “community”, or loyalty, or truth, or acceptance, it’s important for us to know what Christian love really looks like.

What Is the Bible Saying?

What Is the Bible Saying?

The Bible has many stories, many morals, many truths, but when we look at the Bible as a whole, what is it saying about God? What is it saying about who His Son is? What is it saying about who we are? Amidst it all, what are we meant to hear from the Bible?

We Can Trust God for Our Repentance

We Can Trust God for Our Repentance

So many people are afraid of the standard of God, rather than being confident that Christ can be trusted to raise us up into holiness as we lean into Him. If we can understand that Jesus can be trusted, we will have the courage to face all our sins and all God’s commands, knowing that He can do all things.

Repenting to the World Rather than God

Repenting to the World Rather than God

As believers, we are seeking to live moral lives and we understand that change and growth is important. But many times because we are not truly looking to the Lord for the renewal of our mind and beliefs, we make changes and we repent but it’s not unto the Lord but unto the world, according to the world’s ideas about what is good.

Where Does Patience Belong in Forgiveness?

Where Does Patience Belong in Forgiveness?

Part of being able to have grace and patience for people is also being able to expect them to change. Not perfect change, but still real change. Understanding the heart that is truly moving towards greater holiness in their repentance and how that is different than the heart that does not intend to change is very important.

Repentance Is Not Mere Self-Affliction

Repentance Is Not Mere Self-Affliction

Real repentance involves mourning for one’s own sin, but it’s about much more than just feeling sorry for what we have done or punishing ourselves. Turning in repentance has fruit we can identify: change in our thinking and believing, change in our behaviour, and a focus on restoring the ones wronged rather than furthering self-obsession.

Repentance Is Owning Our Personal Sin

Repentance Is Owning Our Personal Sin

We focus so much on the archetypes of sin and the particular ways sin shows up in other people that is distasteful to us, that we manage to excuse and blind ourselves to the sin we continue to cling to in our own lives. Our infatuation with our own lives often is what keeps us from deeply repenting and truly loving righteousness.

Selfish Repentance, Pt2

Selfish Repentance, Pt2

Even the worst sinner can turn to the Lord with beautiful repentance. When we truly are repenting, we may not be able to always make everything right, but we desire to, and we delight in justice even at the cost to ourselves.

Selfish Repentance, Pt1

Selfish Repentance, Pt1

In the modern world there is a high value for a form of repentance which, in reality, emerges from the self and the recognition that we want to be seen as a better person than we have been. There is a real difference between this and repenting in order to begin to restore those we have wounded and honour God. And the fallout is that when we do the first, we never truly do repent. We need to begin to see where our false repentance lies so we can return to these things before the Lord and ask for Him to work a right repentance in us.

Ephesians 1:11-12 What Is Our Inheritance? (Scripture Study & Commentary)

Without Christ, none of us could light the lamp of our own salvation. The delight we have in our salvation is that now we are no longer ignorant about God and that we no longer walk in the futility of our minds, but rather we can put on Christ and delight in holiness. Our inheritance is a new life, a holiness we can delight in, and an increasing knowledge of God.

Worshipping the Lord with Obedience, Pt 2

Our worship must be unto Christ and according to His terms. Where it is tempting to become wrapped up within things of God, we are meant to be centered upon God Himself. How God Divides by His Son

God divides rightly. This division is often so offensive to people until we understand what God is accomplishing through it and why it is still part of the reality we live in, even as those who follow Christ. God has divided the world by His Son; let us obey Him in this.

Spiritual Endurance, Pt 2

Spiritual Endurance, Pt 2

The call to spiritual endurance is not for nothing—there is an end goal for which we ARE enduring. We as believers need to stay awake to the reality of the Kingdom of God and the coming Day, not slipping into the slumber and drunkenness of the world, because He desires that we would be ready for Him and not taken by surprise. Our endurance is a spiritual thing, fuelled by the very real hope of Christ’s return and renewal of all things.

Ephesians 1:7-10 The Wisdom of God in Redemption (Scripture Study & Commentary)

God is shockingly generous, and meanwhile, He is not a fool. God’s wisdom is one that holds all the information and navigates everything perfectly—and this is true even in His mercy. His redemption of us is perfectly good and perfectly right, and while we are astounded by how good He is in offering it, we must likewise be astounded by His wisdom and goodness in calling to us to repent and press forward for holiness.

Guarding Your Heart Spiritually

Keeping a watch over what we believe requires all diligence. What we obey and the beliefs we join with reveal where our hearts are, to whom our allegiance belongs. Love Your Neighbor: Rescuing the Doctrines About Separation

Separating from people because we believe we are superior to others is absolutely not godly, and we are right to live and teach against this. Love Your Neighbor: When Our Wisdom Conflicts with God’s Wisdom

We often evaluate our understanding of things by ensuring we are avoiding the wrongs that other people do. We “love people into change” because we want to be better than people who “give up on” people—and because this feels so right, we resist even when the Word of God conflicts with that idea. We need to be humbled enough to see that our ideas of love are often rooted in self-serving.

“Loving others as ourselves” is complicated by the fact that mankind is biased towards himself.
