Vicky Warren joins me to discuss the pursuit of unity in the church. In this age when we’re exposed to so many voices and opinions, she urges us, first, to pray, then to lay down our rights, to seek peace in knowing who the Lord is, and to ask for reconciliation with Him. Her words are gentle and kind, yet strong and authoritative. I pray you are refreshed by her time on the podcast today!

Now she is committed full time to using these experiences to serve along church planters in Asia and Africa to extend the reach of the Gospel through Pioneer Business Planting. Fighting Forward by Hannah Brencher

Hannah is reading The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins and Tell it Slant by Eugene Peterson and she’s listening to the Crime Junkie podcast.  She is being refreshed by cultivating habits of slowness.

Noteworthy quotes:

“We have to be able to put our devices and distractions down and bring into the world what we are called to bring into the world.“ - 8:02

Questions for consideration:

  • What do your “secret hours” - time spent in the Lord’s presence - look like? Are they a consistent part of your routine or scattered? Which part of your day can you guard to meet with the Lord and be refreshed by him?
  • Hannah discussed the lies we tell ourselves and how we avoid processing the root of those thoughts. What areas of your life are you “putting on mute” to avoid a deep dive into your thought patterns?

Opportunities for Faith with Cimber Cummings | Ep. 77

Opportunities for Faith with Cimber Cummings | Ep. 77

Cimber joins me on the podcast to chat about opportunities for faith and opportunities to make Christ known in our daily lives. She reminds us of the hope we have in Christ, even in 2020, and encourages us to share that hope with others. As this year comes to a close, I hope the Holy Spirit uses our conversation to guide reflection on the Lord’s faithfulness this past year.

A little bit about the guest:

Cimber is an author, speaker, college ministry director, and guac enthusiast based out of East Texas. She considers discipleship to be her calling, but dessert to be her pastime. She spends her days ministering to young women, discipling and teaching young adults, eating and traveling, binge-watching shows about eating and traveling, and running (because of all the eating). Her debut book, twenty something, celebrates stories of faith, fun, freedom, and the discovery so synonymous with the decade of our twenties.

Twenty Something by Cimber Cummings

Cimber is re-reading her own book, watching The Crown, and listening to Maverick City Christmas.  She is being refreshed by Texas weather and being outside.

Noteworthy quotes:

“I think the Lord really entrusted us with a lot of opportunities for faith in this season because it was so abnormal.” 5:37

“When we enter into a life with Christ it does require daily provision and us constantly coming back to Him.“ 6:49

“In a world that’s constantly calling us to be more and more and more, Christ calls us to, actually, be less.” 21:37

“In our twenties, so often, we’re more consumed with the end game and the end result and the goal, but I think God’s a lot more concerned with the path that we’re taking and the journey that we’re on.” 26:36

Questions for consideration:

  • With the end of the year approaching, what opportunities for faith have you had in 2020? Where have you seen the Lord’s faithfulness and how has He sustained you?

Longing with Hope with Caroline Cobb | Ep. 76

Longing with Hope with Caroline Cobb | Ep. 76

Singer-songwriter, Caroline Cobb, joins me on the podcast to discuss longing with hope: waiting for Christ’s return while enjoying the common graces on this side of eternity. Caroline loves to share the story of scripture through her music and hopes to make it accessible to people throughout their daily lives. During her time on the podcast, she encourages us to yearn for Christ’s return and set our hope in Him. Her love for the Lord and passion for His word is radiant.

A little bit about the guest:

Before her thirtieth birthday, singer-songwriter Caroline Cobb set a goal to write a song for every book of the Bible in one year. That year set in motion a passion to tell the stories of scripture through music, with creativity and faithfulness. Caroline’s forthcoming album, A Seed, A Sunrise, explores the longing hope of Advent, the joy of Christmas, and the anticipation of Christ’s return. Produced by Isaac Wardell (Josh Garells, Sandra McCracken) and featuring gospel trio Resound and a fourteen-piece string orchestra, the new album builds on Caroline’s previous work the Blood + the Breath (2013) and a Home & a Hunger (2017). Both trace a theme from creation to Christ’s return, with every song parachuting into a different biblical scene.

Caroline has been featured by The Gospel Coalition, Doxology & Theology, Risen Motherhood and many more, with a Home & a Hunger named among “The Best Albums of the 2010s” by The Gospel Coalition. She and her husband live in Dallas, TX with their three children Ellie, Harrison and Libby.

Book of Common Prayer Lectionary

Caroline is reading Gentle and Lowly by Dane C. Ortlund and the Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson; she’s watching Elf, the Crown and The Mandalorian; and she’s listening to Andrew Peterson, Sandra McCracken, and NeedtoBreathe.  She is being refreshed by spending time in nature, women’s Bible study, and breaks from social media.

Noteworthy quotes:

“When you know the end of the story, all of the messy middle makes a lot more sense and there’s a lot more hope when things are hard. “ 5:36

“We’re so quick to rush to the warm fuzziness of Christmas, but I think that God has called us, also, to long for Him to return.” 6:32

“What we really need is not a vaccine or certain president; what we really need is Christ.” 21:22

Questions for consideration:

  • In what ways do you find yourself getting caught up in the culture of Christmas rather than the true meaning of Christmas? How can you orient Christmas festivities around longing for Christ’s return?

A Biblical Worldview: Making Sense of Life Here in 2020 with Sarah Martin | Ep. 74

Sarah Martin is back on the podcast to shed some light on living with a biblical worldview. It is so easy to get wrapped up in the hopelessness of our day, but Sarah encourages us to look up and live out of the hope we have in Christ. Her burden for twenty-somethings is that we would not be deceived by schemes of the enemy and that we would boldly and eagerly pray for restoration and redemption to God’s original design for this broken world. She reminds us that we can’t go to the Bible to learn more about ourselves and our story, but how we fit into God’s story. I’d love to know what questions arise from listening to this episode! Send me a message on Instagram or emma@waterwithlemonpodcast.com. I hope Sarah’s reminders are refreshing to your soul today!

Love Matters More with Jared Byas | Ep. 72

Love Matters More with Jared Byas | Ep. 72

Jared Byas joins me to discuss “speaking the truth in love” as Paul writes in Ephesians 4:15. He reminds us that telling the truth in love is not just giving our opinion and calling it truth, but rather earning people’s respect by bearing their burdens alongside them. Jared’s message is timely in a moment that seems partisan and divided. He reminds us to look up, that our hope is not found in agreements or the favor of man, but in Jesus’ return.

A little bit about the guest:

Jared Byas is co-host of the popular podcast The Bible for Normal People and co-author of the book Genesis for Normal People. Noteworthy quotes:

“Whatever it means, to speak the truth in love, we can’t separate it- we can’t divorce it from being humble, gentle, patient, bearing our burdens, bearing others’ burdens.” - 8:48

“It’s countercultural to say ‘love matters more.’” - 11:32

“I like to say we come to relationships not with a sword, but with a towel and basin.” - 11:43

Questions for consideration:

  • In today’s climate, do you have trouble “telling the truth in love?” How can you practice bearing another’s burden to show them love?
  • How can we come to relationships or disagreements, “not with a sword, but with a towel and basin?”
  • If love is the greatest gift we’re given, how does our love for the Lord overflow into our relationships and conversation with others?

A Great Woman of God with Alli Worthington | Ep. 70

Alli Worthington joins me on the podcast to consider the phrase “Great woman of God.” Her time on the podcast along with her new book, Standing Strong, remind us God wants to partner with us-- that His love isn’t distant or unattainable, but paid for by the Son and sealed by the Spirit. She urges us to connect our knowledge of God with our love for Him and relationship with Him; He is not a distant dictator but a loving and perfect Father.

A little bit about the guest:

Chrystal is reading books on forgiveness to aid in writing her new book. She is being refreshed by chatting with people at the picnic table on her front lawn.

Noteworthy quotes:

“When you realize there’s this open line of communication between you and God-- and you’re using it-- it changes the way you see your day and how you operate in it.” - 10:29

“The God who created everything is saying, ‘come talk to me’.” - 15:40

“One of the ways I can be-- be still and be at rest-- is to be in conversation with God.” - 20:10

Questions for consideration:

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:16 says, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” Our sinful nature rebels against this- what reminders or rhythms do you have in place to remind you to rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all circumstances? What people or places (prayer closets?) encourage you to do these things? If you don’t have reminders, what can you start doing to remind yourself of these things?

Question for consideration:

  • Are there areas in your life where you feel you’re pursuing comfort over obedience to the Lord? Will you spend some time confessing those areas to Him and laying them at His feet?

Noteworthy quotes:

“Confidence comes from taking action.” - 9:47

“The more we spend time alone, the more we have clarity about who we are supposed to be and our purpose and our passion in life.” - 17:32

Questions for consideration:

  • Are there areas of your life where lack of confidence is holding you back? How can you take action? Who can encourage you along the way? Who can YOU encourage in their dreams or aspirations?
  • Are you able to find solitude in the midst of your schedule? Are you able to reflect with the Lord on your life?

What’s Refreshing: Being outside!

Noteworthy quotes:

“What we call things and what we associate ourselves with is super important.” - 10:20

“Scripture and the Word of God can change any situation- can change your mindset- and that we are to reflect the image of God.  His Spirit does dwell within us.”  - 11:35

“Sometimes hitting the easy button is not always good.  It’s about the process that he wants to take you on that journey.” - 16:54

“Sometimes what we think is really really bad and hard- because we don’t like it- is actually a really good place to be for God to show up and blow your mind.” - 20:14

Questions for consideration:

  • There’s a lot in a name.  What are names you’re calling yourself that the Lord may need to redeem?  In light of those names, what “shade” of lipstick do you need to “put on”?
  • How can you speak the Word over yourself everyday?  How can you speak the Word over others?

  • When viewing others, do you see them as mostly sexual beings or image bearers?

Questions for consideration:

  • Lauren encourages us to live life with open hands, knowing we’re not in control.  Take a moment to reflect on that.  Do you have trouble letting go of control?  Do you live life with open hands, ready and willing to submit to God’s commands?
  • Lauren credits a huge deal of her healing and passion for life to her community.  Does your community inspire joy and truth in your life?  How do the people around you build you up in truth and love?

Legalism with Amanda Hope Haley | Ep. 54

Legalism with Amanda Hope Haley | Ep. 54

Ladies! Welcome back to Water with Lemon and thanks for joining in on this week’s episode! This week, I got to sit down with, Amanda Hope Haley. We talk all about her new book, Mary Magdalene Never Wore Blue Eyeshadow and the adventures that led up to it.

I got to have such a fun conversation with Amanda about what God says about the Bible versus what we say about the Bible. I think that this conversation is so vital because we live in a world that listens to podcasts and reads different devotionals as a supplement to the Bible, however, we should not let those things alter what God and the Bible are actually saying. Something that Melissa said that really stuck out to me is to be uncomfortable and spend time in those places because that’s where He is going to reveal Himself the most. It is so good that we have all of these new books that we can use to grow and understand the Bible. At the end of the day, the only way that we can understand the Bible more is to dive into the Word. I’m so excited about this conversation with Amanda and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Something that was talked about in the podcast was about legalism. I think that it is so easy to believe something that we were taught as a child. However, I believe that if we have questions about the Bible, go back to the roots and read the Bible. Like Amanda said, don’t read just a couple of verses but read the whole thing. This is how we grow into what we really believe and not what others believe. God is not done with us yet, we are not done growing and learning about the Bible. I hope that you go check out Amanda’s book, Mary Magdalene Never Wore Blue Eyeshadow and hear more of her story and background. I hope that this episode was refreshing to listen to. Thank you so much for the continued support and I’ll see you next week. Stay fresh, my people.

Depression with Melissa Maimone | Ep. 53

Depression with Melissa Maimone | Ep. 53

Hey there, ladies! Welcome back to Water with Lemon and thanks for joining in on this week’s episode! This week, I got to sit down with my new friend, Melissa Maimone. We got to talk about her struggle with anxiety and depression and how she has found the Lord in those moments.

. I got to have such a life giving conversation with Melissa and finding freedom in having depression and anxiety because we have God who is with you the whole time. I think that this conversation is so important because we live in a world that suffers in anxiety and depression on a daily basis. Melissa’s testimony is so inspiring of how God has really transformed her and taken her from that. We chatted about how you can have a really good life but still struggle with a mental illness. It is so freeing to think that we have a God that carries our burdens when we don’t think we can take another step. I’m so grateful that I got to talk with Melissa because hearing her testimony and knowing that we are not alone in this!

Something that was talked about in the podcast was about hiding in the darkness of depression and anxiety. I think that it is so easy to hide behind it all but there is grace through it all. We have a God that wants to be apart of the mess because He wants to carry those difficult things. We should not neglect the negative parts of yourself. It’s okay to be comfortable in the uncomfortable because Jesus is sitting with us through it. I hope that you go check out Melissa’s book, The Radiant Midnight: Depression, Grace, and the Gifts of a Dark Place to see more of her story and journey. I hope that this episode was refreshing to listen to. Thank you so much for the continued support and I’ll see you next week. Stay fresh, my people.

Mormonism with Lisa Brockman | Ep. 52

Mormonism with Lisa Brockman | Ep. 52

Hey there, ladies! Welcome back to Water with Lemon and thanks for joining in on this week’s episode! This week, I get to sit down with my new friend, Lisa Brockman. We got to talk about her story of leaving Mormonism and finding the Biblical Jesus.

Lisa shares with us about how she left the Mormon church and how she found and fell in love with the person of Jesus. I got to have such a deep conversation with Lisa and finding herself worthy in the One who loves and knows her. This conversation was so close to my heart because so much of my family is Mormon. It was so cool to hear about God transformed Lisa’s heart to surrender to God. However, we got to chat about how God is worthy of sacrificing everything and experiencing God on such an intentional level. We have a God that shows us grace and mercy even when we are coming back to the Father. I think that this episode really pulls that out. I’m so thankful that I got to talk with Lisa because seeing her testimony transforming her life was truly eye opening!

Something that was talked about in the podcast was about shame and feeling the weight of it. We have a God that is fighting for you and that is for you. I think that we have to realize who Jesus is for us. This can help us fight for the ones who are lost and joining them in the journey because it’s not up to us. We need to engage in the conversation and meeting them where they are. I hope that you go check out Lisa’s book, Out of Zion to see more of her story and journey. I hope that this episode was helpful and fruitful to listen to.

Mental Health with Jamin Roller | Ep. 51

Mental Health with Jamin Roller | Ep. 51

Hey Ladies! Welcome back to the podcast and thanks for joining in on this week’s episode! This week, I get to sit down with my friend and pastor, Jamin Roller. We got to chat about mental health and understanding who we are.

This week on the podcast, we have my wonderful pastor Jamin Roller talking about mental health and his thought provoking ideas about it. I got to have an insightful conversation with him about it and understanding who we are and who we are in Christ. I think that this was such a life-giving conversation because we got to talk about things that people really struggle with when it comes to anxiety, depression, and other mental illnesses. We live in a generation that is constantly surrounded by technology and stress that can lead to things like depression and anxiety. However, we have a merciful and loving God that is near take those worries away. In Matthew 11, it says that when we go to the Father, He will take our heavy burdens and give us rest. I think that this episode really speaks into that. I’m so glad that I got to talk with Jamin because he tells us that there is so much more than our worries in not be with us in Heaven!

Y’all, thanks again for listening in and I hope you enjoyed my conversation with Jamin today! I pray that you are able to seek the Kingdom first and find rest in the Father.

Something that was talked about in the podcast was about difficult feelings and the escape of them through technology. We have used iPhones to drown out negative and hard feelings for so many years that we have tried to escape feelings of loneliness. I think that phones and social media are such an easy distraction but this is not a new thing, it started at the garden. Starting new habits that make seem cliche or old to us by fixing the problem of distraction. We need to cling to intentionally creating spaces that we’re going to face that we want to hide from. I hope that this episode was helpful and fruitful to listen to. Thank you so much for the continued support and I’ll see you next week. Stay fresh, my people.
