Up Close With Mia Bonta Candidate For California’s 18th Assembly District

Welcome everyone to a very special episode of the We The Scenario Podcast. I’m your host Maggie B and Tony Siona and we're so excited to introduce today’s guest. Her accomplishments are endless--She is a candidate for California’s 18th Assembly District, an elected school board member, and is the CEO of Oakland Promise. Our guest today specializes in youth development, education, philanthropy, and college access, just to name a few. Growing up, Mia moved 13 times in 16 years, and with every move she carried what was most precious to her: a crate of books. Education was the one constant in her life, and Mia was fortunate to attend schools that would foster her love of learning and offer her a caring community of teachers and administrators committed to her success. For Mia, education was life-changing, and was what first inspired Mia to become a public servant. In 2018, Mia was elected to the Alameda Unified School District School Board, and she currently serves as Board President. In addition to her professional work, Mia has served as a PTA member, a school site council member, a member of Alameda Free Library Foundation, and an active community member. Mia also serves as a delegate for the district to the California Democratic Party, worked on several campaigns dedicated to electing progressive labor candidates, and served on the AD-18 Advisory Committees for Women, Education, and Early Childhood. Remember California go vote June 29, 2021

Director: Dwayne “Governor” Aikens Jr

Corey Damon Lillard was born and raised in  East Oakland, California. As the youngest of eight siblings, he is no stranger to hard work  and determination. At a young age, he lost his mother to violence and at the tender age of eight, he was the victim of gun violence and had to be hospitalized for six months and underwent six surgeries to recover.  Corey could have easily fallen victim to his circumstances, but instead he realized that sharing his personal story of  triumph and transformation could serve in a mission of helping others. In  2017, he wrote, and self-published a book with the goal of uplifting as many  people as possible and sharing a way to overcome the obstacles that may  confront them, especially Oakland's youth. Corey’s belief emphasizes the importance of building strength in mind,  body and spirit. He teaches others how to connect mental and spiritual  strength with physical vigor through physical training and bodybuilding. Corey hopes to be a role model for his community and create a legacy for three beautiful daughters. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his  family, doing feedings for his East Oakland community. He has been a  personal trainer for over 10 years and also serves as the current Chairman  of the longest running Martin Luther King Jr. Multicultural Rally in the Bay  Area.

Great Doctors Have Extraordinary Mentors Interview With Dr. Jasper

Great Doctors Have Extraordinary Mentors Interview With Dr. Jasper

Hosts: Atilua “Tone” Siona/Maggie “MB” Buchanan

Guest: Byron Jasper, MD, MPH, AAHIVS Founder of Comprehensive Medical Mentoring Program www.cmmpmed.org

Executive Producer: Jhamel “HMTWNHERO” Robinson

Production Team: WELO Internship Team

With a laid back attitude and southern humility to match, Dr. Byron Jasper, a native of Houma, LA, confirmed his passion for teaching and mentoring as well as his desire to learn more about improving community health during his residency in family medicine. After successfully completing his residency at Baton Rouge General Family Medicine Residency Program, Dr. Jasper decided to pursue a fellowship in academic and community medicine. He chose the Washington, D.C. area and, more specifically, the Community Health Leadership Development Fellowship at Georgetown University School of Medicine to better comprehend the challenges of delivering primary care to under-served populations. While at Georgetown he also would be able to learn more about the implementation of public health measures in an effort to improve the long term well-being of the community. The addition of participating in faculty development through teaching undergraduates, medical students, and resident physicians made this a transformative experience for Dr. Jasper. During his time in fellowship, Dr. Jasper saw it necessary to create CMMP because of his realization that there has been minimal growth in the number of minority physicians despite their important role in reducing health disparities. Dr. Jasper also realized that mentorship often influences academic productivity and professional satisfaction. With proper structure it can also help to promote the pursuit of an occupation in health care for those that may not have otherwise considered this field. It was from these facts and concepts that the foundation of CMMP was built. Dr. Jasper is a proud alumnus of Xavier University of Louisiana, Tulane School of Medicine, and Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

Drugs & Junk Food Can Kill Your Smile: One On One With Dr. Wharton- Lake D.D.S

Drugs & Junk Food Can Kill Your Smile: One On One With Dr. Wharton- Lake D.D.S

Dr. Djavan (DJ) Wharton-Lake was born in Washington D.C. in the Spring of 1986. Raised by his two immigrant parents from Trinidad and Tobago, Djavan grew up in a household where education was made a priority from early on. Djavan, affectionately known by his friends as DJ, attended the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he majored in Biology while also walking-on to the Football Team. Inspired by his father and several mentors close to his family, DJ decided to pursue a career in Dentistry and was admitted to Howard University’s College of Dentistry in the Fall 2010. He assumed multiple leadership roles during his intense four years in Dental School including being the DC Representative for ADEA (American Dental Education Association) and Vice President of the Student Council. In these roles, DJ continued his passion for community service and organized events geared toward educating the surrounding underserved communities about Oral Hygiene. The event he enjoyed planning the most was “Give Kids a Smile Day” where Kids from ages 5-12 traveled in buses to the Dental School to participate in educational dialogue and receive free teeth cleanings from the Dental Students and Hygienists.

In his spare time, DJ enjoys traveling with his fiancé, Lauren. They are currently planning their wedding for the Spring of 2021. DJ has also taken a new vested interest in Angel Investing in tech startup companies. He recently invested in The Players Circle, a company that developed an app geared toward creating a social media platform for high school athletes. DJ continues to search for tech startups that look to push new innovation.

Interview with Pastor Smoke

Interview with Pastor Smoke

New Life Community Church was birthed in the heart of Pastor Darnell Hammock while still residing in Fresno, CA with his wife and newborn son. The ever increasing reports of homicides and hopelessness in his hometown of Oakland burdened him to action. The hope which is in Jesus is what Oakland needs. While faithfully serving as the Executive Pastor of Pearly Grove Baptist Church, he was blessed and sent to start the God-honoring work of planting New Life Community Church in 2012.

After several meetings in the home of Pastor Hammock’s parents and prayer walks in the North Oakland community, a launch team of 17 people was formed. To introduce the ministry to the community, four monthly preview services were hosted in the fall of 2012. New Life Community Church officially launched January 6, 2013.

Since its inception, New Life has strived to I.M.P.A.C.T.

I-Intentionally inviting
