We are Believers: Podcast

By Daria Hackenberg & Hollis P Monroe

We believe that we are all creators of our own realities.
Everything is possible and impossible at the same time.
If we change our perceptions, the world around us will change.

In this podcast, we examine everyday life situations using a practice of honest self-reflection, clear communication and optimistic realism.

Our goal is not to tell you what to do as we cannot claim to know the solution to every problem.
We can only demonstrate our approach to living and express what we believe.

Hosted by Daria Hackenberg and Hollis P Monroe.

Is love a feeling or a choice?

Is love a feeling or a choice?

Can we choose to love someone? In this episode, we ask: Is love a feeling or choice? In trying to find an answer, we share our fairly strong and different points of view.

Throughout our conversation,
We examine the theory of one person who believes that love (or more specifically, being open to love) is always our choice.
We discussed the role of love in an abusive relationship.
We try to discover what we can choose in the relationship using logic and reasoning versus what our natural inclinations are regarding love as a feeling.
We even touch on the way our primal instincts are triggered by attributes such as appearance and odor to influence our desire or willingness to mate.

Is it possible to force ourselves to love someone when we don't actually feel it?

Can we choose to avoid or stop loving someone?

Do we have any control at all when it comes to love?

We would love to hear your thoughts on the topic so join the conversation!

Looking forward to hear from you!!

Who should pay on the first date?

Who should pay on the first date?

“Does a man have to pay on a first date?”

People on the street were asked this question by actors from a popular German comedy show but the answers they received in the actual segment were not nearly as interesting as comments under the video.

One man had such a particularly grandiose justification of his position that we had no choice but to devote an entire episode to giving our take on his premise. This point of view surprised even ourselves!

In this episode, we discuss the main question of who should pay on the first date, we reflect upon the importance of first impressions and, as usual, we share some funny stories from our own first dates.

And now we turn the question to you.

Who do you think should pay on the first date?

Looking forward to hear from you!!

The 5 Languages of love or how to express and comprehend loving until death do us part

The 5 Languages of love or how to express and comprehend loving until death do us part

Imagine yourself deep in love.

You might want to tell your partner  "I love you" every 10 minutes to make sure that they know how you feel about them. You want them to have absolutely no doubt about being loved.

It's not quite realistic, is it?

Your partner might even think you're crazy.  But how else would you show your love?

Some people come home every day with flowers and gifts. Some cook exquisite dinner meals to please their other half.  Others may kiss and hug their partner at every opportunity.

We all give what we believe is an unabashed and true expression of our love.

And then, out of nowhere, you hear "I don't feel like you love me."

But how is this possible when you have shown such an abundance of love and devotion?

Clearly, they don’t appreciate all the loving things you’ve done.... And so begins the quarrels, tears and eventually parting.

It's a pity, isn't it?

In this episode, we will talk about the variety of ways we communicate love as described in Gary Chapman's book "5 Languages Of Love."

We discuss how to recognize the different languages and how to "speak" with your lover in their “language.”  We will tell our personal stories and consider if it is possible to make love last forever.

COME IN. WE'RE OPEN

COME IN. WE'RE OPEN

We have touched upon the importance of communication and open dialogue in quite a few of our past episodes.  In this episode, we decided to talk about it specifically and so we invited a professional linguist, Professor Tiffany Dyson (@tiffetzjiff) to inform the conversation.

Tiffany shares some of the knowledge she has gained about communication through the language research in which she is involved as well as through her personal life experiences and travels. She also compares some of the notable differences in communication that exist between the United States, Korea, and Germany.

Throughout this discussion, we were learning about the impact of the environment on our language, our vocabulary, and even our personalities.  It was all very entertaining and informative, but then… something went wrong. Somehow, the conversation suddenly shifted (as they often seem to do) towards the topic of relationships. More precisely, open relationships. We began to share our views on the question of non-monogamy and trade experiences and theories.

Listen to our quite “passionate” discussion and share your thoughts.

Are you for them or against them?  Are they to be considered normal? Or should they be regarded as a new disease plaguing society?

Are you currently in an open relationship yourself? How did you come to the decision to "open up" your situation?  Has it made things better or worse?

We would definitely like to hear about it.

Between Friendship and Attraction

Between Friendship and Attraction

"Hey, Daria, what's going on with you and Hollis?”

“Are you dating Hollis?”

“No?”

“Why not?”

“It is not possible that there’s nothing going on.”

“After all, you met on Tinder!”

You are a man and a woman!

Clearly, you are deceiving yourselves and do not want to recognize the attraction between you!"

And on it goes....

Is it possible to ignore our natural inclinations, respective gender identities and physical attraction to instead truly perceive and interact with each other in a strictly platonic way?

In this episode, we will try to answer the question of whether friendship between a man and a woman is possible, and why there is nothing romantic or sexual between Hollis and myself.  Maybe you can guess why...

In discussing the possibility (or impossibility) of friendship between a man and a woman, we found that once it two people reach a certain point (intentionally or otherwise), it is extraordinarily difficult to escape the friendzone.

Be careful!

Listen to our stories!

Draw your own conclusions!

Do not allow yourself to be trapped  in a zone of forced friendship and misery!

Eastern - European mentality... or right way to think about man and woman roles?

Wow! Thank you all for the huge response and great feedback to our previous episode "Blitz Round #1: Answering some OkCupid Questions."

We received many words of encouragement and gratitude for this Blitz-Round format. Almost everyone seemed to enjoy it, so obviously with approval and support like that, we will surely keep it going.

But along with this, it seems that some people were particularly struck by Daria's statement that she doesn’t need a “nice” man around her.

For context,  we recommend that you listen to the previous episode: "Blitz Round #1: Answering some OkCupid Questions"

Daria's answer seems to have caused quite a bit of opposition to this idea and so we decided to record a separate episode to clarify and expand upon the reasoning that causes her to draw that conclusion.

In this episode, Daria will further discuss her interpretation of the words “nice” and “strong” and “smart. ”

Is her view because she has russian mentality or because it's right way to think about relationships between man and woman?

We will also share some very personal and intimate experiences from our lives, which served to inform our positions on the relationship between a man and a woman.

4. If you can choose only two qualities in the partner out of the following three: nice, attractive and intelligent, which would you choose?
5. Do you think smoking cigarettes is a gross habit?

Who's hidden behind the tattoo?

Who's hidden behind the tattoo?

Do people really evaluate us based solely upon our appearance?

Are we treated differently by others when we don’t appear to fit their description of “normal”?

Could it be that this often negatively interpreted thought is most often rooted within our own minds?

In this episode, we welcome our very first guest: Tattoo artist Ina Bond (www.instagram.com/inabond).

Honestly and openly, Ina describes how her desire to rebel and prove something to the outside world eventually led to an exploration and acceptance of herself through being tattooed and later tattooing others.

Ina gives useful advice on what a person should consider before getting a tattoo and shares her thoughts on how to choose a design as well as the artist who will interpret it.

She describes how tattoos can affect the body, why some people get addicted to this process and how one’s perception of the world can change once tattooed.

All in all, we had a very entertaining and lively conversation filled unexpected discoveries and conclusions.

Stay with us to the end and enjoy the frankness of our guest!

Comparing yourself to others

Comparing yourself to others

Almost every day, we compare ourselves to other people. Often we take someone as an example of what we think we should be. We want to be able have what they have or do what they do.  And very often, we become upset or jealous because we are not as beautiful, successful, or happy as someone else seems to be.

We can look at Hollywood celebrities, famous musicians or worldclass atheletes as benchmarks, even as they are somewhere far away in a fairytale land living the lives we think we wish to live.  We can imitate their clothing or hairstyles and use the products that we are told that they use with no distress.

But comparing ourselves with friends, acquaintances and colleagues is different and somehow much more frustrating.  Why did the person you sat right next to in class receive a better grade than you? Are they smarter? Better? Luckier?

How is your friend happily married while you are still alone? Maybe because she's prettier or slimmer or has bigger breasts?

Should we try to be more intelligent, more attractive, more interesting, more productive? Or should we just learn to love ourselves for who we are?

Is it possible to love ourselves for who we are and not to pay attention to other people?

Where is the line between comparison and competition? How do you compare yourself to others for your own benefit and not to your own detriment?

All that and much more in this episode. Our stories, advice, doubts and theories.

Our opinions didn't align until the end, so as you listen while compare our positions, let us know who's viewpoint resonates with you most.

Or should we even try to make such comparisons?

Looking forward to hear from you!!

Dating a woman in her 20s versus her 40s

Dating a woman in her 20s versus her 40s

In this episode, we will try to understand why women in their twenties and women in their forties behave so differently on dates and within relationships.

We’ll touch on what a woman in her 20s seems to want, and why she doesn't need such things at 40 while other requirements becomes uncompromisingly necessary over this same period of time.

We will talk about power dynamics, sensitivity, natural inclinations and, as always, relationships.

We will discuss how modern trends of sometimes “forced equality” can upset the already delicate balance of an intimate partnership.

Does a man have to be ‘strong’? Is it really considered acceptable for a man to cry?

What kind of man is looking for a ‘strong’ woman and why is it that many women in positions of power and influence rarely have interest in these type of men.

Optimist, Pessimist and Reality

Optimist, Pessimist and Reality

What if what we think of as “real” isn't actually real?

What if we told that there is no such thing as reality?

What if we told you that you can change your reality?

Have you noticed that some people only see the good in things while others, even at the best of times, can always find something bad?

Why does one person always seem to be lucky and another always seem to be unfortunate?

Who can say that the way someone perceives a situation is actually seeing reality?

Being realistic means seeing objects, situations, or events as they truly are.

But can you actually trust your perception?

Why is it that optimists are regarded as hopeful dreamers seeing the world through “rose-colored glasses" while realists are considered pessimistic?

In this episode, we will discuss and compare the pessimistic and the optimistic life positions as well as try to figure out what reality is and  determine whether it is possible to be realistic while remaining an optimist.

We will also talk a bit about mysticism and luck and also share the recipe for the magic potion of evil eye and failure.

Listen all the way to the end and share your life position with us!

Looking at a beautiful woman is like looking at the sunset

Looking at a beautiful woman is like looking at the sunset

"Looking at a beautiful woman is like looking at the sunset." Hollis P. Monroe.

In this episode: we share our views on how a man feels when he looks at an attractive woman and why it is so fascinating. As well, we discuss what it feels like for a woman when she meets an attractive man.

We talk about whether this "first" impression can be preserved and how long it might last.

What is platonic love? And what is love, in general? Does love even exist?

Is it possible to love a partner unconditionally?

We also speak about how we love our children and why caring for offspring brings us closer to our animal instincts.

It is often thought that friendship is the basis of love. But what if it isn’t? Could this be the reason why so many marriages fall apart?

We question the connection between happiness and formal marriage. Does it take a formal commitment to have a strong and happy relationship?

Listen all the way to the end and share your opinion with us!

Why can't she see the real me?

Why can't she see the real me?

You are a funny and easy-going guy who met someone. You spent some nice time together, you were joking like you always do. But then, she wrote that you are too serious for her. WTF? Where did she find this in you? Why did she see something that is not present in you at all? Or do you just think that it's not present in you?

Is the perception that people have of you the real you?

Is what we feel about ourselves real?

Or is it something that you want to show?

Sometimes we wonder how some people can come to conclusions about us that are the opposite of the real us.

Why does one person see you as a serious individual and another one as a silly clown?

What is the TRUE you amongst the "opinion of others", "our perception about ourselves" and the "real you"?

In this episode we speak about the perception that people have about us and how to deal with it. Do we need to change something and if yes, what?

True stories and the answer to the question, “Could someone be described in their entirety?”, included.

Looking forward to hear from you!!

I am lazy. Or am I?

I am lazy. Or am I?

Are you lazy?

Would you consider yourself a lazy person?  At times, do you feel as though you have no energy to accomplish the day’s tasks or even the inspiration to get out of bed in the morning?  Do you get down on yourself because of this lack of enthusiasm?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this episode is for you!

We will question the preconception of laziness and even challenge its actual existence.  We will propose the possibility that you are not lazy at all.  On the contrary, you a person with an inherent but often misunderstood intuition in regards to your own desires and motivations.

And as usual, we’ll share some stories and examples from our personal lives, because we, like all humans, are “lazy” from time to time...

Looking forward to hear from you!!

Afraid of getting old

Afraid of getting old

As children, we are in a rush to grow up, but once we reach adulthood, we very often regret that we didn’t fully appreciate our fleeting youth

We do indeed grow up but at some point we recognize that we are also starting to grow old. The body looses the strength, speed and resilience it once had as the first wrinkles appear and the gray hair splashes. Most of us fear of aging.

How terrible it is to become old! How terrible it is to realize that youth has abandoned you!

But do we even need to be afraid of how old age can manifest itself?

Is it only a drastic decline in appearance and ability coupled with the painful decrease of sexual attractiveness? Or we feel that life is going to be end?  In this episode we discuss if we able to stop being afraid of getting old and that our set of mind make us old before we really get to this point.

Maybe adapting to aging simply requires adjusting our way of thinking.

We will tell you about Masha Panova's (@dusapin_masha) "Hide&seek" photo project and how it can change the view on aging.

Listen to the episode and share your thoughts with us!

Looking forward to hear from you!!

Tinder dating with and without isolation

Tinder dating with and without isolation

Quarantine and social distancing have brought about new challenges for all of us.

The restriction of physical interaction has left us no choice but to search for it on the Internet.

The result seems to be that apps such as Tinder are being used more that ever before.

Can virtual interactions replace real intimacy?

Is it possible to find true love on a dating app?

How necessary is your text description? Why do men want to meet soon? Why do women tend to want to communicate longer online before meeting?

How important are attractive physical features versus good character traits?

In this episode, we will tell some funny (and some not-so-funny) stories about online dating and how scammers might exploit our loneliness.

Share your experience and dating-stories with us!

CO-DEPENDENT USERS

CO-DEPENDENT USERS

In this episode, we examine a letter from a person who seeking advice from relationship philosopher and YouTuber, Alexander Grace.

In short. he was asking for guidance on what he should do about his seemingly one-sided relationship. And although it was posted over 8 months ago,  in our opinion, this topic will always be relevant to many and therefore still worth exploring.

How often do we get the feeling of being unappreciated or used? From time to time and under many circumstances, we can all feel it.

But what do we do when it comes to our ongoing personal relationships?

It's not easy to get out of this trap.

And how often do we realize the codependent role we play  in such a relationship?

Very, very rarely.

How could this even be possible when you feel that you are one being used and disregarded? We'll figure it out!

Listen to the full text of the letter as well as our somewhat differing analyses and conclusions in this episode and afterwards, please share with us your thoughts and experiences about these kinds of situations.

NO MAKEUP means she has NO INTEREST

NO MAKEUP means she has NO INTEREST

A week of chatting and finally the long-awaited first date, but she (oh my God!) came without makeup!

What would that mean?

She wants to show that she's not interested in you?

Or does she want you to recognize her as a person first?

Or is she nice and comfortable with you?

Or maybe she never wears makeup and her armpits are in the jungle?

Or maybe it just doesn't matter?

In this episode we try to figure out the possible reasons and question the need for makeup in general.

We also discuss how men and women are attracted, both from our personal point of view and in terms of psychology, physiology and natural instincts.

What is really important and what is not? How to be attracted to the opposite sex and to remain yourself?

And as always, we share our personal stories!

Listen and share your opinion and your stories with us!!!

GET LOST IN CORONACRISIS

GET LOST IN CORONACRISIS

Fear, uncertainty, instability, powerlessness, uncertainty... ...is what brings people around the world together today.

We live in a new world for us and no one knows how long it will last. We isolate ourselves in our homes, keep our distance, can't meet friends or even family like we used to.

The Coronacrisis is affecting each of us.

Each of us is dealing with it as best we can.

We believe that someone is helped by his supply of toilet paper, but it does not save from a lack of social contacts.

How not to go insane?

In this issue, we'll discuss a few options. Listen all the way through and find your inspiration.

But the most important thing to remember is that we are still human beings and we should treat other people with understanding and not lose our humanity.

Stay strong! Stay home!

ADDICTION

ADDICTION

My name is Daria and I am.... Believer

Today I went to Anonymous Alcoholics for very first time. No, I have no problem with alcohol or drugs or something else.
Ya-ya, all addicted say that they have no any problem and can stop in any moment.
But it is really not my case. I went there just to support one friend of mine. I sat in the corner, looked into this friendly faces, listen about their stories. I got to know them in person. Was surprised how "normal" they are and how big their hearts.

Topic of the meeting was "Gratefulness".

Everyone told what he/she grateful for and added some touching story from past or present time. Someone was crying. Someone was laughing.
I listen all this stories and tried to recognise what I AM grateful for? What I will say when I will have chance to say something.  This thought took all evening and way to home.

And I found it out.

I am grateful that I can ask about help. I can raise my voice and said "I NEED HELP".
And I am very thankful that in time when I trusted to tell it, next to me was people what supported and helped me.

You cannot imagine, but just to realize that you have a problem, took a decision to ask about help and spell this 3 words loud it is like a superpower.

Plenty people have too low self worth or too big ego to do it and endet up in best case in hospital. In worse case on a bottom from where way out is almost no possible because life already completely destroyed, including relation with friends and family.

I am not telling now only about drugs and alcohol. It could be depression, game addiction, shopaholism, whatever that suppose to ruin your life if not right now, than in future.

Dear You, who read it right now, please, open your eyes, be honest with you, look with this opened honest eyes on your current life and pointed out that your life is awesome and be grateful for that and proud of yourself or confess that you have problem, go to people that you can trust and say "I NEED HELP". Be brave. Turn your life in better way. Bekomme a superhero. Be sure that it is never too late, but then earlier you start then easier will be to get your life back.

With believe that you can,

Running after OR waiting for???

Running after OR waiting for???

Should you go after things or should you wait for what is coming in the right time when you are ready?

This topic was offered by one of our listeners. Thank you, dear listener.

We were surprised how emotional this discussion was.

The topic touched a sensitive part of our lives and lead to sexual attraction.

Then we came back to the main questions: Do I really want it? Am I ready for it? In one moment we were stuck on personal relationships between man and woman. Do you need to improve your skills to meet the right person?

We bring out some theories of achieving this goal and making your dreams come true and making sure that these will help you in your regular life. At least you can try it out.

What is our conclusion on the asked question? You will find out while listening to our discussion.
