Do I need to protect my website? – The Complete Podcast

The Importance – Do you need to protect and secure your website? Yes! Even if your site is small and doesn’t make any money, securing your site is essential. Website security is important to keeping hackers and cyber-thieves from accessing sensitive information. Without a proactive security strategy, businesses risk the spread and escalation of malware, attacks on other websites, networks, and other IT infrastructures.

SSL -  SSL stands for Secure Socket layer – It is the standard technology for keeping an internet connection secure. Most of the browsers now make it mandatory and do not rate a website well without it.  Any data transferred between users and sites, or between two systems become impossible to read by using encryption algorithms. It prevents criminals from reading and modifying any information transferred, including potential personal details.

Malware protection – Use an anti-malware software or plugin to scan and protect your site from malicious code. Malicious code can be pushed in for various reasons. Hackers might want to control your site. Often, bitcoin mining code is added. This compromises the website sanctity and the website may be clocked for the same. It is a tedious task to recover a compromised website.

Firewall – Make sure you use a web application firewall (WAF). A firewall is necessary as It reads every bit of data that passes through it to protect your site. It sits between your website server and the data connection. It blocks all hacking attempts. It also filters out other types of unwanted traffic, like spammers and malicious bots. Bots may attack the website hundreds of times in a minute, leading toa DDoS situation – Direct Denial of Service, compromising the website availability and accessibility.

Use Strong Passwords – This is one of the prime engines of a hacked website. Don’t make your password a familiar phrase. It might be easy for you to remember the phrase but a  password cracking software will easily break through that in no time.  Create a unique password. Keep changing the password periodically. Use 8-12 character passwords having special characters, upper and lower case alphabets and numbers.

Some Dont's for a good website

Some Dont's for a good website

Quickbytes from Webdesign Launchpad:

Check this episode on Website - https://mohitweb.com/podcast-donts-for-a-good-website/

Some Don’t’s for a Great Website

Don’t Confuse - If you distract or confuse your visitors, they will need more time to find what they need. They will not find your website as user-friendly and chances are that they leave dissatisfied and with no intention of coming back. Don’t confuse, be straight forward.

Don’t be Salesy - The audience of your website is usually sceptical of anything that sounds “salesy.” If your website could speak to them, they’d say, “Just the facts, please.” Audience of your website is likely to be impatient. If they can’t quickly find what they want, they’ll move on.

Restricted content type - You cannot share any content on your website. Since websites offer open access, it needs to avoid any form of violent or gambling or offensive content. Most hosting providers have this restriction added to their terms & conditions.

SEO with caution, value first - Don’t just jump in for SEO implementations. Often they do result in people reaching your website, but if your website does not add value, people just tend to bounce off and do not go through what you offer.

Avoid Clutter – Plan your website. Don’t randomly add content, sections, pages and posts to your website. You don’t need to add everything, focus on the key objective of the website. Your web design should always focus on enhancing the user experience. Ensure standard, easy-to-use, and familiar designs.

Some Do's for a good Website

Some Do's for a good Website

Quickbytes from Webdesign Launchpad:

Some Do’s for a Great Website:

Visual Hierarchy - Use visual hierarchy to guide visitor’s attention to important elements first. Visual hierarchy assists the eye to follow a certain path on every page you visit on the internet. When used deliberately, it guides the visitor’s attention through a series of messages, toward a call to action.

Scrolling works better - Users like scrolling a lot more than they like clicking. See Facebook and Instagram for that matter. So if you are currently spreading the information about your product across many different pages, it’s time to reconsider. A word of caution, don’t overdo it.

Short sentences and simple words - The easier your website is to read, the more successful the website will be. Use the common words that visitors expect. Long sentences and fancy words add as a mental block to the reader. That’s not good. Avoid jargon. Use simple words.

Restrict text to 3-4 lines - Long paragraphs make reading website content boring and do not align with digital content best practices. Breaking up long paragraphs makes the content easier to consume. As a general rule, don’t write paragraphs longer than 3-4 lines.

Innovation and creativity get noticed - Be innovative, be yourself, be creative. Think of why people love you. Pour that essence into your website. It will reflect you, and your connects will definitely team up to promote it.

Tips for building a good website

Tips for building a good website

Tips for building a good website

A Website business - As of date, it is not difficult to start a web design business. With a lot of things going online, the opportunities for this are huge, if pitched well. With the addition of social media marketing, the reach to newer audience is large.

Address a burning problem - Your website can go viral, if you can address a burning problem. People look forward to genuine content for their issues. Your solutions to the problem (one or more) becomes a key for your success.

Valuable Content - Web browsers really value content. A website with good and valuable content goes a long way in establishing credibility. Web browsers often rank these websites higher as compared to those using paid promotions for visibility.

Communities and Engagement - Building communities either on your website, or linked to your website adds a lot of engagement. Engagements add tremendously to a website value. The more the engagement, the more the value of the website.

Audience - Customer in mind -Always keep your audience / customer in mind when building / adding to your website. More they visit your website, more they will give you recognition. Believe me it is not about what you think, but about what they want.

Essential requirements to build a website

Essential requirements to build a website

The 5 Essentials of Building a website

Domain Registration – This is the first essential thing to build a website. You need to have an internet name, which translates into an address where your internet presence will be based out of. You do get free domain names from some providers, but these are not recommended for a website with a serious objective. They can be used for practice.

Hosting Registration – Once you have purchased the domain, you need internet space to load your website to. This is similar to a physical premises of a physical world, like a house where you or your business resides. This is the second key essential for building a website.

Choosing the platform – You then need to plan and build the structure. The internet world provides for a number of technologies to build your website. In the physical world, you can build your premises either from concrete, or use temporary construction, or use frame based structure. This is the third key essential for building a website.

Planning Content – Now you need to plan and structure what you should put in your website. These would include products and services that you offer, or informational stuff you want to show to the world. This is like adding your various offerings through your shop or services. This is the fourth key essential for building a website.

Maintenance and Updates – Finally once your online shop or premises is built in the internet world, you need to replenish the products and services, do regular maintenance and cleanup of your premises. This is the fifth key essential for building a website.

The Types of Websites we can Build.

The Types of Websites we can Build.

Quickbytes from Webdesign Launchpad:

The Types of Websites we can Build.

The websites that can be built are numerous. The options will probably run into millions.

I discuss some types of popular websites that people build.

These include the blogging website, websites for non-profits, food websites – something everyone loves and of course a Fashion website.

After a Fashion website, you can quickly think of Beauty and Makeup. It is important to be fit, so, the next type is that of a Fitness trainer, followed by Yoga and Meditation for peace of mind.

In today’s stressful world, a humour and comedy website is quite popular. A number of corporate citizens have become standup comedians, and it goes a long way to release stress. Personal Finance websites help you manage your money, Pets are a source of inspiration, and the COVID stress has people turn artists or even share their craft creations.

Dance training and showcasing is also popular. You may want to share about travelogues, and of course a personal website stands out for showcasing both your personal and professional endeavours. You may use it to further your career or make a community of people having similar interests like you.

With more and more people hunting for jobs, professional resume writers are in good demand, and they use this type of website to showcase their work and gain clients. I have friends who share quotes to gain visibility, by building a website, you own the creation, and could use it to write a book as well. Coaching websites are very popular, and definitely if you want to sell your products, services and your talents, an e-commerce website is a must.

Can I build my website myself?

Can I build my website myself?

Over a decade or two ago, websites were a lot of coding. HTML, Javascript, PHP, Ruby, Python and more. But as of today you do not have to be a professional to build a website. You may ask “How hard can this be? Could I do this myself?”

You know the key objective why you want the website, you know your business, or the stuff you need to add for your recognition. Even if you hire a designer or a developer, you still need to prepare the core content, provide relevant images and videos. The designer or developer will just structure that content logically, make it visually attractive and then ask you to start sharing the links with your network.

So, all you need is pre-made layouts and drag and drop builders to do it all by yourself. Yes tools and builders are there to assist you in this. You need some practice, and it is not difficult or even technical.

Do I need a website

Do I need a website

Often I get this question - Do I need a website?

Some statistics were recently published, which said 97% of urban consumers go to the web to find a local requirement.

If you want recognition for yourself or your knowledge, the easiest way to reach the people you influence is online.

For the last one year i.e. 2020-2021, the pandemic has driven a huge bunch of people use online mediums for promoting their business / work online. My own Rotary Club resisted online meetings a few years back, but have now gone to online meetings in view of the pandemic challenges.

Doctors, who always preferred you to visit their clinic, or a clinic they frequented, are now providing online consultation for almost 80-90% of the patients.

A website is your mirror for what you wish to do – a majority of the consumers are using it to find and engage with a business, or a subject matter expert, or even for arts. It has increased the reach of your offerings to larger audiences. Very recently, I saw on social media, the famous singer Neha Kakkar was offering a set of introductory singing classes online for a sum of just Rs. 499 (approx. $6.50). People do not recognize your offerings without a website.

If people need to find you, online is the best option, there are over 3.5 billion (350 crore) searches on Google per day. Even rural users are slowly moving to online connects.

In fact, if you need to connect with people, showcase your talents, highlight your services, make visible your products, whether or not you want to sell online, a website is a must.
