Ep. #186 - How Long Can You Shoot Weddings While Pregnant? with special guest Jennifer Van Elk

Dustin and Steve talk about life as a wedding photographer when you have a child surprise in the middle of wedding season. Okay, not a child surprise. This isn't the Witcher... but an unexpected bundle of joy nonetheless. They also talk about how you should react if a client doesn't really want you at the wedding. As well as the pains of shooting a wedding video solo when things like card reading are brought up on the day of the wedding, moments before the ceremony as something the client wants to do before the ceremony. It's a tough week. Beer Talk: Steve - Fuity Nuggets X2 by 450 North Brewing Company Dustin - All Day IPA by Founders brewing Company Q&A: Why do clients still ask to see examples of photographer's work when photographers post their work everywhere online? How long did you keep shooting weddings after getting pregnant? How long after childbirth till you started shooting again? How did you feel? What considerations do you need to make before having an associate shooter work for you? Follow Jenn Van Elk: Website, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook Want more? Ep. #182 - Almost Pornographic Couple Kisses

Dustin and Steve are easing back into the new world of post-covid-vaccine weddings. Dustin is busy with real estate. Steve is trying out new straps for his cameras. Corny puns. Slippery nips. HBO Max. Steve drops big news and then even bigger news to end the episode. Beer Talk: Steve - Bourbon Barrel No Sparge Imperial Golden Ale from Taxman Brewing Co. Dustin - Soft Parade by Short's Brewing Company Q&A: What do you do if you live with someone who gets covid, but you're still testing negative? Do you call off your shoots anyway? Is anyone still on clubhouse? Do you cater to guests who ask for photos of themselves 3 days after a wedding? Have you ever had a couple go at it when you ask them to kiss? Like, really go at it? Ep. #181 - Devil's Avocados with Adam Mason of The Bearded Tog

Ep. #181 - Devil's Avocados with Adam Mason of The Bearded Tog

Adam Mason of The Bearded Tog and Mason Photography joins us this week to talk about life, photography, music, cryptocurrency, scientific films, dogecoin and the movie Whiplash. Steve and Adam also talk about conference photography, political photography, and commercial work. The also talk about whether or not your mortgage company cares about how you made your money.

Q&A:
Should I let my husband second shoot for other female photographers when he's never shown an interest in it before but one of my competitors keeps asking if she can hire him?
I grew my beard out and we stopped booking clients, should I shave my beard so we can make money again?
My sister thinks her photographer deleted her wedding photos because I brought my camera to the wedding. She's demanding I pay for a new wedding or else produce a complete gallery of her wedding when I didn't shoot anything but getting ready. What do I do?
I booked a client at a discount because I was supposed to get show photos from their BDSM conference on my site but when I showed up they took my phone and cards and forbid me from saving any photos anywhere. Can I ask for more money now since they didn't live up to their end of the agreement?

Ep. #180 - Roll for Photography with Casey Fatchett of the Nerdy Photographer

Ep. #180 - Roll for Photography with Casey Fatchett of the Nerdy Photographer

This week Steve talks with Casey Fatchett of the Nerdy Photographer. They talk a lot about Casey's podcast and how he makes it. They also talk about his Heiland 3-Cell Flash Gun. Look it's a pretty tangent heavy episode where Casey mostly entertains Steve with stories about being an actor. He was up for a roll in Vanilla Sky and he was up to do the voice of the Geico Gecko, and he shares with Steve why he didn't get those parts. It's all interlaced with chat about photography and the need for self-care so you don't die shooting weddings.

Beer Talk:
Casey - 90/~ Wee Heavy from Belhaven Brewery and also some scotch.
Steve - Moon Rambler IPA from Founders Brewing Co.

Q&A:
If I roll a critical fail while shooting a wedding that's making everyone roll to determine how well they'll do (they love DnD)... do I have to critically fail?
Should I ask clients if I can bring my own weed to smoke while shooting their weddings since my clients stopped sharing their joints during the pandemic?
What sort of wrap can I put on my camera body that looks professional but still shows off my inner nerd? (I would consider anything Doctor Who, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, Star Gate or Farscape related, no Star Wars please)
How can I get a client to stop leaving gross emoji memos on venmo when I sell them stuff? My friends think this guy is paying me for sex because it's all eggplant gush or peach gush every time I make a sale to him.

Ep. #177 - Streamlining Your Photography Workflow with James Broadbent of Narrative

This week Steve talks to James Broadbent of Narrative and Chasewild about building tools to help streamline workflows for photographers. They talk about Narrative Publish and Narrative Select and how they reduce the time it takes to publish blogs and also cull shoots. Steve and James also chat about Narrative's response to the Covid-19 Pandemic and how Narrative helped out their clients during the past year. Also they chat about how James got started in photography (with a 50mm in Pakistan taking photos of mountains during a trip) and about his destination photography company Chasewild.

Q&A:
Is Narrative Apple only and if so, when will it come to Windows?
I don't like the idea of paying to keep blog posts on my site, but more importantly what is your favorite color?
Can someone explain why photographers waste so much time culling photos? I shoot 100 and I deliver 100. What's the problem?
I shoot family photos on burst mode and need a way to speed up post processing, what should I do?

Ep. #176 - The World's #1 Most Stank Proof Photobooth with Brandon Wong of the Photobooth Supply Co.

This week Steve was joined by Brandon Wong of the Photobooth Supply Co. Brandon talked to Steve about why he transitioned from being a wedding photographer to creating a photobooth company that could help photographers and other event vendors make more money. Brandon and Steve also talk about the changes Photobooth Supply Co. made this last year to help their clients keep earning money during the pandemic, and they also talk a little bit about the future of photobooths.

Q&A:
Where do you get your jumpsuits for conferences?
Where do you think AR fits into the future of photobooths?
Do you have to encourage guests at events to take dick pics or does that just happen organically?
If a skunk sprays your salsa photobooth can you clean off the stank with tomato juice?

If listening to this episode finally convinced you to take the leap and buy a photobooth, you can do that here: https://photoboothsupplyco.com/weddinghangover

Ep. #174 - Sony A1, Fujifilm GFX 100s, and Gamestonks Sharts with Ulices Del Toro

This week we welcome Ulices Del Toro back to the podcast to talk about life after having a baby. We also talk about the Sony A1 and the Fujifilm GFX 100s a little (but not too much because neither of us have those cameras). The photographer of the viral Bernie Sanders photo was interviewed by Rolling Stone and had some thoughts to share about his photo and we also talk about Airmap suggesting that drone flights be monetized by the government.

Beer Talk:
Ulices - Features & Benefits by Stone Brewing
Steve - Augustus Gloop's Secret Stash by Books & Brews

Q&A:
If you team up with another photographer to offer video, should you brand your video on your own or let your video just fall under their brand?
If a wedding is rescheduled and then happens without the photographer, but the clients still want photos in their wedding attire, what do you charge them?
If you don't want people giving speeches and doing vows to stare at their phones, then is gifting them notebooks or vow books a good idea?

Ep. #173 - Leaving Canon for Sony and Photographers Kicked Off Instagram

Ep. #173 - Leaving Canon for Sony and Photographers Kicked Off Instagram

How has the dismal vaccine rollout affected photographers? Some photographers have been kicked off Instagram since the insurrection on January 6th, is it related (it's not)? We're demanding to see location information to find out (we're terrible people and we're actually quite sorry for all of this). Sony a7iii impressions from shooting elopements and engagements. What a weird world it is to leave Canon for Sony. That weird Via Getty story from the insurrection. A daredevil photographer gets arrested for burglary. Lots of coronavirus talk and a few political things (we're not sorry about that... it's been a weird time period and we think it's important to talk about that kind of stuff... even if we're just making jokes). Sony Airpeak updates and sneak peeks. It's sexy (just like this show).

Beer Talk:
Steve - Gulo Gulo India Pale Lager from Wolverine State Brewing
Dustin - Nothing... Not Even Water

Q&A:
Any tips or advice for trying to reach a different, more high end, market?
Should all hobby photographers be shot and their bodies put on display as a warning to others? (hard no)
What is a fauxtographer?

Ep. #172 - Should A Luxury Photo Company Use iPhone or Android?

This week we're talking Christmas gifts and the things we missed in 2020 and the things we're looking forward to in 2021. But it's mostly not holiday related. We have updates on birds that rhyme with Sony as well as updates on more terrible things that Pass is doing. We're also talking about the longest exposure photo ever taken, a touchpad replacement for a shutter button and DJI being put on the economic blacklist. Plus, drone photos of landscapes that look rather phallic. Nature's d**k pics.

Beer Talk:
Steve - Exemption from Taxman Brewing Company
Dustin - Yellowstone Bourbon

Q&A:
What do you do if a second shooter takes a bunch of photos that aren't deliverable in any way, shape or form?
Should you switch from Android to iPhone so your photography business brand seems more luxurious?
Is it okay to not pay a photographer for their work if they showed up late with a child?

Ep. #171 - Sony Pony Droney Bologna

Ep. #171 - Sony Pony Droney Bologna

This episode is weird. Dustin could have sent Steve his audio. Steve could have asked for that audio when he realized it wasn't there... but then Steve's massive frustration with Dustin's weird Skype glitches wouldn't shine through in the episode and then people would just think Steve and Dustin were frustrated for other reasons than technology... So here's that sweet Skype audio everyone craves so that you all know what horrors Steve and Dustin faced.

This week we talk about the AirPods Max, Dustin's new fugly Kickstarter shoes (they're worse than moonshoes somehow), and people dying during or after shoots. It's a little bit morose but we promise to handle the topic with same level of tactless crassness that we always bring to the table. We also talk about people developing film in beer. Hell yeah! Finally we talk about the Sony Pony Droney (which we hold is a better name than AirPeak).

Beer Talk:
Steve - Eirik Bloodaxe (the best beer in the world) by Scarlet Lane Brewing
Dustin - Fat Tire by New Belgium Brewing

Q&A:
WTF is the point of a photographer listing their gear or camera systems in their Instagram info, etc?
What do you do if a wedding client is hiring different photographers for different parts of the day?
Is it okay to edit noses and dorsal humps of your subjects without talking to them first to make sure it's something they want?

Ep. #169 - Moonshoes, Mullet Shoes, M1 Chips, and iPhone Camera Comparisons

This is our first episode back after our fraught pre-election episode. It's been a confusing anxiety filled month as our current president refuses to acknowledge that he lost the election. He lost bigly. But we're finally back with an episode full of confusing jokes and poorly done accents. We're talking about Cole Haans and Hush Puppies in followup (trademark John Siracusa) then it's on to talking about RSI issues. Steve's been having a lot. While looking for a new office chair, Steve found some humorous questions and answers on Amazon's site (Dustin doesn't find them amusing at all). We also talk about squishy things to pillow the wrist while using a keyboard and mouse and standing desk converters. Then we talk about bad SEO advice and Parler (and you thought we were done with the political talk in the opener... somebody please end it). Also, Dustin talks about his Santa sessions and Steve mentions his frustrations with Pixifi (which isn't as good as hornybook which is a software that will get you there, according to Dustin). We also spend a long time talking about the M1 chips and the new iPhone's camera (primarily as a result of Josh Wither's fantastic blog post).

Beer Talk:
Dustin - H 2 O (it's not a beer, he's drinking water because he's sick)
Steve - Eirik Bloodaxe by Scarlet Lane Brewing (it is a beer, he's drinking beer despite being sick because he's an idiot)

Our recording went super long, so we're breaking Q&A up into a separate episode which will air next week.

Ep. #166 - Using Manual Focus When It's Too Dark for Auto

This week Steve tells a story about using manual focus with live view when it was too dark for his autofocus to work. It was hell. Dustin talks about video lights and we wonder if he's even a photographer anymore. We talk about some Canon, Sony, and Fuji Fast Glass stuff. Also, "They Took Our Jobs!" That's right! We have an in depth and intelligent discussion of the new Skylum software coming out, Luminar AI, that isn't just Steve trying to get Dustin to repeat a line from South Park while Dustin clearly has no idea what Steve is talking about. It's very intelligent. Also, Steve explains Dorian Grey to Dustin, kind of...

Beer Talk:
Dustin - Some Canned Old-Fashioned thing that doesn't even have actual whisky in it
Steve - Elijah Craig and coke and then also a Munsterfest from Three Floyds because it's been a hard few weeks so stop judging me.

Q&A:
If a photographer hires you to second shoot but never tells you where to be to second shoot, should you just leave and drive to the area to be there on time in case they do give you an address at the last minute?
If a former groom gets married a second time wearing the same clothes as when he got married a few years ago while you were shooting his wedding... do you comment and mention that it's the same clothes?

Dustin talks about Tenet. Steve talks about I'm Thinking of Ending Things. They're both disappointed. Also, Dustin doesn't understand how acting works.

Ep. #165 - What is an Associate Photographer?

Ep. #165 - What is an Associate Photographer?

What is an associate photographer? Is it okay to put out random requests for an associate photographer on Facebook? What should you do to train an associate photographer? We talk about associate photographers for quite some time... and also about new scams and hoaxes on the internet. Hey, here's a crazy idea. Also, don't vote for Trump. He's literally the reason why weddings can't happen right now and why you can't work. Sorry to get political, but the community of wedding photographers is hurting because of the pandemic and as our nation's leader he's basically done nothing to help.

Beer Talk:
Dustin - Nap in the Hammock from Metazoa Brewing Co.
Steve - Rubicon from 18th Street Brewery

Q&A:
What ISO should your Photoshop brushes be set at for rainbows?
Does anyone know of gloves that can be used with a mouse?
Is it malicious if a client cancels their wedding and you cut them a check for the amount of money they paid you and then they issue a chargeback through their credit card company even after receiving the check and then they ghost you?

Ep. #164 - Pandemic Wedding Photos Being Used as Evidence

Ep. #164 - Pandemic Wedding Photos Being Used as Evidence

This week we're talking about the possibility of your photos being used as evidence in a court of law. That's right, if you take photos of people not social distancing or not wearing masks during the coronavirus pandemic, there's a possibility you could be served a warrant and forced to turn over your photos. Which we're all for. We're also talking about how Nikon should leave the camera industry, Kodak's insider trading scandal, Instagram spam, and photographers losing clients because they support Black Lives Matter. We also take a trip to the drone zone and Dustin shares a story of a recent crash and we talk about the impact of drones on wildlife.

Beer Talk:
Dustin - Blood Orange Gold Standard from Taxman Brewing Company
Steven - Alpha King from Three Floyds Brewing Co.

Q&A:
Is anyone purchasing education products/services during the COVID-19 pandemic?
Do you change prices in the name of coronavirus?
How much do you hate how casual rescheduling weddings has become due to the pandemic?
What do you do if you delete a client's gallery as your contract stated you would, and then can't find their photos on your hard drive when they tell you they forgot to download their photos before the gallery expired?
What do you say if your friend takes the smooth filter a bit too far when editing photos of you?
What do you do if another photographer offers to edit your client's photos because they think you did a poor job on the edit?

Ep. #162 - Overheating Issues with Ulices Del Toro of the Wedding Photo Podcast

This week Dustin and Steve have their friend Ulices Del Toro back on the podcast to form the Blue Shirt Boys group and also to talk about some gear that Sony put out. Like that amazing CF Express type A card and corresponding card reader. Or those new touch screen menus that Sony made. Or those hybrid card slots they created... and yes, I guess we get around to talking about the new Sony a7S III. We solve the overheating issues that both the Sony a7S III and the Canon EOS R5 are experiencing while shooting outside, with one cool product Sony put out that isn't even camera related. We also talk about the photographer that tracked down a couple getting married on the Brooklyn Bridge (to chorus) to give them a photo. We discuss whether or not you should be allowed to skip out on a wedding if people aren't wearing masks or social distancing. We also discuss Kodak's pivot to pharmaceuticals and GoPro's pivot to being a lifestyle brand. Then we talk about the improved eye autofocus on the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 and there's a Nikon z5 coming out which will have dual card slots.

Q&A:
If a bride says their photographer doesn't allow videographers who they aren't friends with, but the bride already hired you for videography, what should you do? Should you buy URLs and redirect them to your site to try to boost your SEO?
If a client reschedules their wedding and has you shoot their intimate elopement and just subtracts the hours from their big wedding party package, but then after the elopement cancels the big wedding party and asks for a refund, what should you do?
Should you do free work for a realtor to try to compete with his current photographer for future work?
How do you respond to a client asking you to use their bodies to create shadow puppet photos?

Ep. #161 - Unsplash and Drone Photos with Josh Withers of the Rebel's Guide to Getting Married

This week Steve is joined by Josh Withers of the Rebel's Guide to Getting Married. Steve and Josh talk about COVID-19 cancellations, unsplash, and drone photos. They also talk about facial manipulation in photos that people do to get those big beautiful anime eyes, just like Josh's eyes in the episode art (which is definitely not a horrifically photoshopped image that Steve made with a photo of Josh's from Unsplash). Steve and Josh also talk about laminar, anthropics, and AI editors. Josh also shares about how to get great audio when you're shooting video (which is always a struggle... I mean, listen to the disclaimer at the beginning of the episode). There's also an adorable guest at the end of the show, but you'll have to watch the video if you want to be blown away by how cute Luna Withers is.

Ep. #157 - Can You Turn Away Unattractive Clients? with James Kelly of the Photographers Craic Podcast

Steve talks with James Kelly of the Photographers Craic Podcast. Steve and James talk about the way COVID-19 has affected their very different countries and how they’re both coping. They also talk about James’s equine photography and a little bit about landscape. They also discuss price fixing, cartels and oligopolies.

Beer Talk:
James - some Spanish pish
Steve - some American pish

Q&A:
Should you give a refund if the client pleads for a refund after calling off their wedding?
What are your thoughts on someone referring an unattractive client to someone else because they don’t feel the client is pretty enough? (We hate it)

Ep. #156 - Can you Shoot a Wedding with an iPhone? with Jennifer Van Elk

This is kind of a weird episode in that it's more serious than usual. You know how sometimes when you're a douchebag every conversation becomes a podcast (sorry, replace douchebag with podcaster). Well, that's what I did to Jenn. We were just talking through what the experience of shooting with an iPhone was like and I recorded the conversation to help me as I went to write a blog post about it later... and that turned into this episode.

Ep. #155 - Technology Troubles with Ulices Del Toro of the Wedding Photo Podcast

This week Steve forgets about Dustin. Literally, Steve forgot that Dustin was going to be out of town and had to rope Ulices Del Toro in for an emergency guest host spot... And it goes terribly. Mired in the muck of technology trouble Steve and Ulices barely manage to record an episode. It's all Steve's fault as his computer and Skype seem to just be failing him left and right. In this episode Steve and Ulices talk about a photographer who was shot in the face, an image that bricked a bunch of Android phones, Ulices's time working for Kim Kardashian's publicity team, and some other technology that Steve is breaking, specifically his Apple Watch. Also, Steve and Jenn are switching to PicTime and we start discussing that.

Beer Talk:
Ulices - Lil' Squeezy Juicy Ale from Deschutes Brewery
Steve - Enjoy by 07.04.20 by Stone Brewing

Q&A:
What percentage of horizontal images do you shoot?
If no one shows up to the event before my stated end time, can I ask the caterers if I can take some food home?
How can I keep from losing fans when I post LGBTQ weddings to my Instagram? (get fans that aren't terrible?)

Ep. #154 - Wedding Crashers with Morgan Roberts and Dominic Fitzgerald of Down Down Critics are Down

This episode we discuss the highly problematic film Wedding Crashers with Morgan Roberts and Dominic Fitzgerald of the Down Down Critics are Down podcast! Buckle up, because this episode is a little bit messy. Also one of the crew this week admits something ridiculously miraculous... they've never been to a wedding. A wedding virgin watched Wedding Crashers... it's so weird.

Ep. #153 - How To Destroy a Business in Less than 48 Hours (or What Happened to Shoot and Share?)

First up, and most importantly, we're donating all the money the podcast makes this month to Black Lives Matter. We both support BLM and we think you should too. Now, on to our normal show notes... We have a lot of follow up about the Copper Stallion Media story. We didn't do a great job in our discussion of that last episode. Then we're talking about a lady who lost business due to supporting BLM and how she handled it (which was commendable). Central Camera in Chicago burns down and the owner says he's not mad about it. He's just mad about what happened to George Floyd. Then we talk about Shiftcam, BS with Dan Mace, drone deliveries, a 96 mph Mavic 2 Pro, and the Wedding Photographers who claim they need 1k subs to livestream a wedding.

Beer Talk:
Dustin - Puppy Slumber Party from Metazoa Brewing
Steve - Keller Haze from Sun King Brewing Co.

Q&A:
What happened with Shoot and Share?
If a beer falls on your MacBook Pro should you switch to iPad Pro?
Is it rude to ask a DJ if they can refrain from using colored lights?

Ep. #152 - Drone Hunt and the Disgusting Way Copper Stallion Media Treated a Former Client

Ep. #152 - Drone Hunt and the Disgusting Way Copper Stallion Media Treated a Former Client

Dustin and his cool dad friend, Steve, talk about DC accents, their first shoots with people since the pandemic ended, a wedding photographer arrested for shooting during the pandemic, falling mirrorless camera sales, grandmothers ordered to remove photos of their children from Facebook, a man arrested for posting to Instagram (because he violated quarantine), and the crazy Copper Stallion Media saga and their drama with a former client, Justin Montney. Also lots of Drone Zone talk this week. Steve pitches a Duck Hunt parody called Drone Hunt, DJI might have to stop selling drones in the USA, Dustin pitches starting a blackmarket DJI drone reselling company, Art Streiber shoots Catherine O'Hara with a drone, a man shoots down a drone and is arrested, and a village head uses a drone to distribute masks to people.

Oh and in case it's not apparent from our conversation in the episode, we find the actions of Copper Stallion Media to be absolutely deplorable.

Beer Talk:
Dustin - Blue Moon
Steve - Wee Mac by Sun King

Q&A:
Is it best to have your instagram set to private?
Do you like your business posts from your personal page?
Anyone still fielding cancellations?
Is it normal if 70% of your couples divorce?
How should you respond to an email from a concerned bride about whether or not you'll have a second shooter?

Ep. #151 - Getting Back to Work After the Pandemic with Jenn Van Elk

This week we're talking about getting back to work shooting photos after the pandemic. A lot of the way we do business is going to change as a direct result of the coronavirus and we want to help guide listeners through that. But also, what's the sexiest underwear a man could wear? Because that has merit for photographers too? Right? No?

Beer Talk:
Jenn - Busted Knuckle by Quaff ON! Brewery
Steve - Stout by Glutenberg

Q&A:
How is the virus impacting our clients in ways we haven't thought about? Outside of just moving wedding dates or having less guests? Like, what if they're abstaining from sex till marriage and have to wait an extra year to start family planning as a result of this?
What are your thoughts on those posts asking for location help in local photography groups?

Ep. #150 - That Spicy Seed Life and a Framed Swastika on a Wedding Day

What are your feelings about breakfast in bed? Do you brush your teeth first? Also, follow up about the 180 degree rule for video/film, new ARM MacBooks Pro, a wedding photographer that may have discovered a stone henge-like structure, and a weird rant about copped cameras and photoshop. We also talk about keeping that seed life spicy in the off season... when there's plenty of time for seed but when your spouse ain't making that money you just don't feel those feels like you used to. We also talk about the PPP loans and unemployment assistance in America.

Ep. #149 - Should Photographers Wear Masks at Weddings? Plus Nana's Dank Pee Play Memes and the Mavic Air 2

Ep. #149 - Should Photographers Wear Masks at Weddings? Plus Nana's Dank Pee Play Memes and the Mavic Air 2

Dealing with email spam from friends, turning your Canon camera into a webcam, sad coronavirus stories, and tearing down some abysmal facebook ads. We're also talking about drones being used to enforce social distancing, a hummingbird drone used to capture footage of monarch butterflies, and the Mavic Air 2. Also, Scotland might be closed for business till 2021.

Steve goes on a rant about frame rate and shutter speed and he's 100% wrong. And you can trust me that he's 100% wrong, because I'm Steve writing this, and I was 100% wrong. Also, let the record show that Luke McBride was 100% correct and by proxy, Dustin (which pains me to admit).

Beer Talk:
Steve - Repeat by Sufferfest
Dustin - Fat Tire by New Belgium

Q&A:
How do you let couples know you can't shoot weddings that break their state's rules for the pandemic?
Should photographers wear masks to weddings? What kind of masks?
Are photographers letting couples who haven't cancelled their wedding yet block off dates next year for possible reschedules?
Who's using their stimulus/SBA money to pay off their taxes?
If a couple reschedules for a new date but still wants to do a ceremony on their initial date and have their photographer shoot both the small ceremony and the wedding, should they be charged more?
How soon after your state opens for business will you start shooting? (Check out the

Ep. #147 - How Are You Staying Creative in Quarantine?

Can you sue someone for embedding your instagram posts? We're talking about Stephanie Sinclair and her lawsuit against Mashable which predictably went nowhere. We're also talking about how to stay creative during quarantine and who owns the copyright on those FaceTime photo sessions. Also, how can we make masks sexy so we can guarantee sexy photoshoots going forward?

Steve - Sufferfest Head Start

Q&A:

What changes are you making to your business to prepare for the next pandemic?
Are photographers refunding deposits if a couple cancels due to COVID-19/coronavirus?
If your client reschedules for a year later due to the pandemic are you charging them more because you were planning to raise your prices for 2021?

Ep. #146 - Subpar Tik Tok Wedding Photos and Yeeting Cameras

Has your camera been yeeted by a groomsman recently? Has a subpar Tik Tok photographer taken crappy photos of your couple during your allotted photography time? Q&A:
How do you write captions for social media during a global pandemic?
What's going on with these FaceTime sessions where photographers are just taking screen shots of the session and editing them?

Ep. #145 - Joining the Right MLM and Avoiding the Shoot and Share Contest That's Ruining the World

Ep. #145 - Joining the Right MLM and Avoiding the Shoot and Share Contest That's Ruining the World

How can you make a move on a client who's getting married soon, without jeopardizing your business? Should Petapixel allow their writers use their enormous platform to go after thieves that no one has ever heard of, thus giving them more attention than they ever could have hoped to receive in the first place? Is it a thing that non-profits can't pay for shoots? What do you do when the conversations with the bridesmaids or groomsmen get uncomfortable? We haven't even gotten to listener Q&A and random facebook questions yet.

Beer Talk:
Dustin - Taxman Cherry Wit-Held
Steve - Upland Wheat Ale

Q&A:
Should I do my cousin's maternity shoot during the pandemic?
How thicc is that pandemic mustache going to get?
Should I take an inquiry for three weeks from now when the stay at home order is for the next month and a half?
Do you use SproutStudio or what business management and gallery software do you use?
Should we enter the Shoot and Share contest?
What MLM should I join?

Ep. #144 - Can You Shoot Your Mom's Wedding During the Coronavirus Pandemic?

Ep. #144 - Can You Shoot Your Mom's Wedding During the Coronavirus Pandemic?

This week we’re talking about the Boston photographer that unwittingly spread COVID-19 to a bunch of clients, family, and friends after contracting the disease at a biogenesis conference. We also talk about a wedding photographer whose social media was hacked at the beginning of the global pandemic causing a lot of stress for her and her clients and after that we talk about a photographer that threatened to delete a problematic client’s photos. We also take a trip to the drone zone to talk about a new drone that can play dodgeball.

Beer Talk:
Dustin - Puppy Slumber Party from Metazoa
Steve - Double Dorian Stout from Scarlet Lane

Q&A:
Should you shoot your mom’s wedding she’s refusing to cancel due to the pandemic when she’s not paying you anyway or signing a contract?
Anybody printing at home during the pandemic instead of having their prints done by a lab?
How often do you feel like bludgeoning the celebrant with your camera?
What do you do when you’re friends with the bride and she updates her facebook to say she’s in a relationship with a man who is not her soon-to-be groom?
Can you shoot a proposal at a park when your state has a stay at home mandate?
Does anyone offer more things to bring in extra income?

Ep. #143 - Dark Booty WPH Livestream

Ep. #143 - Dark Booty WPH Livestream

Howdy partners! WPH went live this week in the facebook group. We talk a lot about COVID-19 and the continued effect it is having on wedding photographers. We can promise that future episodes won't be so pandemic focused, but we can't promise they'll be as much fun as this one. This might be the best episode we've ever done. So come listen to Dustin do his Dustin thing, and listen to Steve criticize Dustin for doing Dustin (that's kind of Steve's thing after all).

Beer Talk:
Dustin - Blackberry Farm
Steve - Glutenberg Stout

Q&A:
Can we go live more often?
Will the Canon EOS R5 really be $3499?
Why are you guys wearing your Sony Pony shirts?
How do you film weddings without the camera stops every 30 minutes?
What do you think of "fake watercolor" images?
Would you consider changing your editing style for a client?
How do you estimate losses for the wedding part of your businesses due to the coronavirus/Covid-19 pandemic?
How can you speed up your editing process?
Is it a "jerk" move to buy the domains for my competitors websites and redirect those domains to my site?

If you want to see the Animorph art Devon Rowland made, check out the facebook group or find our blog post for this episode. And you can find Devon at her website.

Also, we're leaving the livestream up in the facebook group and you can watch it there, if you want. Or you can find it on our YouTube.

Ep. #141 - Coronavirus Extra (COVID-19 and your wedding photography business) with Jenn Van Elk of Wedded

We're releasing this special episode to talk about COVID-19 (perhaps better known as Coronavirus), and how it's affecting wedding photography businesses and the wedding industry. We know you're hearing a lot about this right now. We know a lot of you are experiencing cancellations (we are too). It's rough out there. So we wanted to talk a little bit about being proactive during this time, communicating with your clients and other professionals, and how you could use this time in relative isolation wisely. We also talk about some ideas for making extra money if you're experiencing cancellations and loss of income. We end the episode by talking about television shows we love watching and other things that make us happy and we hope some of those things bring you joy and comfort too as you're social distancing. We're all in this together, and we can all get through this. Just don't panic and remember to ask for help if you need it. We love you all.

Ep. #140 - Compressing Raw Files with Boris Verks of Dotphoton (now called Rawsie)

Ep. #140 - Compressing Raw Files with Boris Verks of Dotphoton (now called Rawsie)

This week we're talking with Boris Verks, the head of product at Dotphoton (now called Rawsie). We talk with Boris about raw files and about compressing them. We also talk to Boris about the White Stripes, the National, Iggy Pop, and David Bowie. And we talk a little bit about Mexican food and Italian food. But mostly we focus on what it is that Dotphoton is doing to help photographers save space. As these new cameras take photos that can take up 80 mb per picture, it's time to start thinking about how we all can save a little space.

Q&A:
Where can I get a printer for pictures that doesn't need electricity?
If you had to survive with just two lenses what would they be?
If a client comes to you for photos after they had photos done by someone else, do you keep your photos off social so as not to piss the other photographer off or do you go all alpha and post them?
What do you do if a potential client tries to hire you to shoot the groom getting ready on the wedding day, but they already have a photographer hired for everything else and that photographer isn't the person contacting you?
Is there a finer moment than starting the car to head home after finishing a triple?

If you loved hearing about Dotphoton (now called Rawsie) and you want to buy it to start saving yourself space, then go here: https://rawsie.co?ref=stevenvanelkx

The photo of Boris  used as episode art was taken by Eugenia Balysheva, CEO of Dotphoton (now called Rawsie).

Ep. #139 - Sony Brony

Ep. #139 - Sony Brony

Click the following link if you want to see that dank Star Wars/Pokemon Meme that we talked about in the opener.

First up we're talking follow up this week, and specifically we're talking more about the Sony Pony situation. Next up Dustin updates us on how the free bridal show went and then we slide into the show and talk about what makes for a good lead from a bridal show. After that we're talking about an email we received that we assume is fake, but that is funny as hell to talk about. Someone wanted to know how they could avoid sleeping with someone at a conference after they already slept with them at a previous conference.

Beer Talk:
Dustin - Nothing... but he has a story about a bourbon Bloody Mary.
Steve - Corona Extra.

Q&A:
Is it copyright infringement if a real estate agent sends one of your photos out to someone else to have a twilight sky added into it without your permission?
Have you ever thought you made a mistake but then when you started editing realized you loved what you did?
Does anyone else sketch out images that they want to photograph?

Ep. #138 - Sony Pony

Ep. #138 - Sony Pony

We're back with a somewhat normal episode... Well, as normal as we ever get over here. Dustin is concerned that Steve is cheating on him with Ulices Del Toro of the Wedding Photo Podcast. Dustin's doing bridal shows while Steve's been shooting in California and visiting Disneyland and Joshua Tree. Then we're talking about that Nikon D6 and the Canon EOS R5. Then, we're doing a lot of Q&A.

Beer Talk:
Dustin - Copious amounts of cold and flu medicine
Steve - Head Start by Sufferfest

Q&A:
If you were cheated on do you stay or no way? (legitimately asked in Facebook photography group... because why not?)
Is there anyone that'll shoot a wedding and hand over the RAWs for a photographer in need?
Why do people think wedding photographers need to have a flash?
Has anyone else ever had a DJ that refused to announce the wedding party at the reception and then somehow found themself roped into the role of announcing the wedding party?
If you didn't give the bride that awful Pinterest inspired photo she forced you to take... then what do you do when she asks for it?

Also, we do a little post Imaging USA wrap up at the end. Specifically we talk about the karaoke bar we went to and what songs we should have put in to sing.

Ep. #137 - Conversations on the Conference Floor - Imaging USA pt. 2

Ep. #137 - Conversations on the Conference Floor - Imaging USA pt. 2

Here's part 2 of our two part episode from the Imaging USA conference. Steve's voice was wrecked in the first episode, and it's even more wrecked in this one. We went to a smoky bar and his voice finally gave up the ghost. Then we did all of these interviews. So once again, while everyone else was out there learning, we were talking to a bunch of companies at the trade show. Still weird. Still wild. In this episode we talk with Canon, Photobiz, B&H Photo Video Pro Audio, Gifyyy and Kiss (a great Indiana company).

If after hearing this you think that Imaging USA sounds like a lot of fun, then sign up to go next year. Just go to their site.
