Weekend Coffee Guh

Weekend Coffee Guh

By Jaye

Separation from family and friends during ’Pandemic 2020’ has made me feel empty and unable to socialize. In March, I started buying flowers as a way of adding a little bit of outside in my home. I would sip my boozy coffee while thinking about how much an ambivert like me missed chatting with people and absorbing their energy. After weekly posts of my coffee and flowers, my network encouraged me to create a space in which we can chat and reconnect the way we do over cocktails. Thus, ’Weekend Coffee Guh’ was born.

My Love for Black Christmas Movies

My Love for Black Christmas Movies

Two and a half years ago, I discovered ‘Black Christmas’ movies and I fell in love with this genre of movie. I love the genre because of the characters and how the love stories are full of depth and texture. It reminds me so much of my daily interactions with love and romance in Black spaces.

Bye, February! Get yo' ass on!

Bye, February! Get yo' ass on!

I struggled so much in February because everyday last month was full of disturbing and dehumanizing anti-black events. Things were so hurtful that I shut down and used work as a buffer to get through the days. I thrive off a sense of completion, so I let work carry me and as a result, I had a productive month in which I made decisions that enhanced growth and communication.  I am proud of my work, but March cannot be this way. I want less acts of anti-blackness, less dehumanization and less cooning! I cannot take it anymore!

I’m Watching TV, TV!

I’m still not over how ‘Queen of South’ ended but it was the best series finale ever. The bad guys won and I loved every minute of it! It’s been a hard few months for me because I’m still mourning Pote and Teresa Mendoza absence, so I am happy to have more shows to watch. I love how diverse tv shows are right now. I have a complete roster of shows to watch and I couldn’t be happier! I’m watching tv, tv!

There will be no Nippy Slander!

No one did it like Whitney Elizbeth Houston. She had the range for R&B, Gospel and Pop Music all while keeping it authentic and fluid. I do not think I will ever experience anyone else like Whitney Houston in my lifetime. I am taking a few moments to share my thoughts on her impact and my love for her music. No matter what happened in her life, she is deserving of humanity and grace. There will be no 'Nippy' Slander!

Underrated Bars, Lines, Lyrics and Limericks- Episode Five, Featuring Tyrone DuBose

Underrated Bars, Lines, Lyrics and Limericks- Episode Five, Featuring Tyrone DuBose

I had a great time talking to R&B Historian, radio host, motivational speaker and Philanthropist, Tyrone DuBose about the songs he loves. He is considered Americas premier R & B Music Historian, radio host and music expert. Listeners will be familiar with the distinctive bass-baritone voice of the Cincinnati, Ohio native as the radio host of the syndicated radio program, "Timeless Traxx," a nationally syndicated radio program that reaches more than 40 stations, and an international following in five countries. His extraordinary knowledge of R&B music history made him a perfect contributor and commentator for the popular TV One series, "Unsung." "Unsung" is the acclaimed, award-winning documentary series that features one-hour biographies, celebrating the lives and careers of successful music artists or groups who, despite great talent, may have been under-recognized or under-appreciated. In many cases, the artists or groups exploded on the Billboard charts with a string of hits, only to have their careers derailed my major crisis or circumstance. The show has featured a plethora of artists including James Brown, Martha Wash, Hi-Five, Howard Hewitt, Kashif, Yarborough and Peoples, CeCe Pennistion, The Manhattans, The Chi-Lites, Kenny Lattimore, After 7, and Deborah Cox - just to name a few. On the show, DuBose shares unknown facts and commentary about these legendary artists, and educate music lovers about the behind-the-scenes facts of their favorite recording artists. In its 12th season, the show has won multiple NAACP Image Awards. DuBose continues to dispense his R & B tidbits of knowledge on talk show host Sheryl Underwood's radio show, serving as a contributor for the segment, "A 60 Second Moment in Music History." He’s also a three-time Black Music Award winner, making history by winning the distinction of America’s number one R&B Historian three times in a record 12 months. His expertise is lauded across the country. Many may also know that Tyrone DuBose is the voice of many national television and radio commercials, and the official voice of the Hollywood African Prestigious Awards, and winning the lifetime achievement award from UView Media in Los Angeles, California. You can find Tyrone on social media: Twitter: @randbhistorian, Facebook: Tyrone DuBose.

Underrated Bars, Lines, Lyrics and Limericks- Episode Four

To know me is to know that I love music of all genres and that I keep a song in my heart. For the final episode in this series, I reached out to Jackson from the 'Rock is Dead' podcast to talk about music. He and Zander have one of my favorite music podcasts because they are witty, sardonic and speak from two different musical points of entry. As you listen to the episode, you will hear me scream, turn into a crybaby and of course talk about my 'Teen Queen' as Jackson mentions a few of her favorite artists. Jackson and I vibe and talk about the music that moves him. What songs, artists and lyrics could a 43-year old woman and a 33-year old man have in common? Tune in and check it out!

You can find the 'Rock is Dead' on all podcast platforms.

Swing in and Swing Out!

Swing in and Swing Out!

My guest on this episode, Cici, had me crying, ready to fight and giving myself props for shedding relationships that did not give me what I needed. Cici talked about her role in the BDSM lifestyle and how she became a swinger, but retired when love found her. She is still active in the swinger community as she knows that there are so few people of color in the community as a moderator and event planner. Now, this is the fifth person in a 'lifestyle' to say that people of color are missing out on opportunities to live their best life, so if you are afraid to venture out, it might be time to get a little courage. Join Cici and I ask we take a little trip with a boozy coffee and Pinot Noir!

A Weekend Coffee Guh 2020 Recap

A Weekend Coffee Guh 2020 Recap

I started this podcast as a way of staying connected with family and friends during the pandemic because I missed having great conversations over boozy coffee, great glasses of wine and stiff pours. I am very grateful for what this podcast has shown me. Weekend Coffee Guh is only four months old and we are sitting pretty at 2000 streams! I appreciate everyone who has listened to an episode, shared an episode, given feedback, and of course shared their story. I have a village full intelligent and supportive friends who are always willing to give their time and expertise to anything I need. The backbone of this podcast is the friends that have conversations with me
This outlet has finally pushed me to share the things that I write with the world and I am elated that so many people receive my ideas and find humor, comfort, safety and love in my words.
Here are a few of Weekend Coffee Guh's funniest, sexiest and introspective moments of 2020! Cheers!

When declaring your greatest of all time, your point of entry into rap/hip-hop is important. My G.O.A.T is Rakim. I am 43 years old and I grew up in the '80s. I am a fan of the braggadocio style of rap music because I love the confidence and the wordplay. My guest, AC is 34 years old and his G.O.A.T is Nas. We start this episode talking about Nas' debut album, 'Illmatic' and his favorite song from the album "Memory Lane," which was produced by DJ Premier. We talked about Beanie Segal, Stevie Wonder, and a House Music DJ named Armand Van Helden.

Are you Alright, Without Homecoming? The Pre-Coming......

Are you Alright, Without Homecoming? The Pre-Coming......

Homecoming is an enchanted time of the year in which alum and admirers return to campus to support their school’s sporting events, perform community service, attend talent shows, and Greek celebrations, such as chapter and line anniversaries. On an HBCU campus, the aura and atmosphere of homecoming are different. It’s like a family reunion without the elders, kids, and weird-ass cousins.

Full disclosure: I am not an HBCU grad. I’ve been a guest at several HBCU homecomings, and I’ve always enjoyed myself. Like most of you, I am hurt that most homecomings are canceled. I had plans to go to my favorite homecoming experience this October.

We all need a feel-good moment, right?
