53. Olympics, mental health, and Bucks in 6

This week, we're all over the board. We talk about the MLB trade deadline, the state of the Green Bay Packers, the Bucks' title, and the Olympics. When we recorded this one it was the height of the Simone Biles news just prior to when she shared she's experiencing the "twisties". We talk about the importance of this conversation and the necessary understanding and support she's received. Also, this was recorded hours before some of the big moves of the deadline like Joey Gallo to the Yankees and Eduardo Escobar to the Brewers so forgive us there.

We hope you enjoy this kickoff to our second YEAR of content!

48. Emily Glankler and building Anti-Social Studies

48. Emily Glankler and building Anti-Social Studies

This week we sit down and talk to Emily Glankler, a high school social studies teacher from Texas. She founded Anti-Social Studies a few years back as a way to fill in those adults who admittedly slept through or don't remember a thing from history class. Today, she has built a following of over 100k on TikTok and a community of teachers, students, and adults that want to learn more about "the most important subject on the planet."

We talk about her path to her brand and legitimizing it in the midst of a profession meant to breed humility. We then move to some of the hot topics in the field today, touching on Confederate statues and monuments as well as the highly politicized new buzzword, critical race theory.

Join us for a phenomenal conversation that talks through some of the obstacles social studies teachers and the American public face today!

*If you enjoyed this episode, be sure to look for Emily on TikTok, Instagram, and anywhere you get your podcasts and DON'T forget to drop us a follow or subscribe to our YouTube so you don't miss out on future WBP content!

43. Tulsa, 100 years later

43. Tulsa, 100 years later

This week, we bring to light the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. On May 31, 1921 Dick Rowland was accused of assaulting a White woman in an elevator in downtown Tulsa. At the height of the lynching era in the United States, the accusation fueled racial tensions already present in a city with a rising affluent Black community centered in the Greenwood district. The race massacre left 10,000 people homeless and killed around 300 people. Black business owners and citizens on "Black Wall Street" lost their wealth and homes in a two day affair that permanently stained American race relations.

We talk about how this incident in American history gets left out of curricula nationwide and the sometimes difficult job it can be to wrestle with dark times in American history. Especially with HB 1775 passing in Oklahoma earlier this month and the 1776 Commission launched by former President Trump late last year, this issue about how and what should be taught in our schools remains pertinent.

Editor's note: While we talk about the necessity to be critical of our past, it is important to take a moment and express our sincere gratitude to those that have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation's freedom. This Memorial Day we thank all that have served this nation from its inception to today. Thank you.

42. Racism in Medicine

For this week's show, we take our focus to institutional racism within healthcare. Using recently learned knowledge from graduate work, JAMA publications, and other disparity statistics, we discuss how implicit bias affects healthcare and medicine. While efforts continue to move closer to health equity, this conversation is important to understanding societal systems interact with medicine and public health.
