Once Upon a Cocktail - Part 2

Once Upon a Cocktail - Part 2

Following the conversation with co-authors Katie Brightside and Sarah L.M. Mengoni from the unique cocktail adventure recipe book, of Once Upon a Cocktail - West Hollywood, the cocktail "dream team" (in the words of Katie) comes together on the mic for Part II of the podcast with We Know Weho!

Meet our guests and dream team members: - Heidi Wittekind who is a long standing hospitality/cocktail master, Bar Director at Tesse Restaurant in West Hollywood, & creator of the Pea Diddy Cocktail featured in the book.

- Lauren Trickett is the National Brand Ambassador for Mount Gay Rum and Cointreau

- Brynn Smith is a renowned mixologist & Bar Director at The Bar Next Door on Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood.

Listen and hear how all these incredible women got involved with the project and their thoughts on this very special cocktail book. We love what Lauren has to say in particular and are tickled to find out that Cointreau is a sponsor. Heidi takes you on a deep dive of how the Pea Diddy was concepted at Tesse and explains how to make the refreshing cocktail. (Insider scoop - Heidi also created the infamous bone luge a not to be missed signature dish at Tesse.)

Sarah takes over the mic to ask the dream team a few questions and then answers what cocktail she thinks has the highest difficulty level to make! You will definitely want to grab a copy of Once Upon a Cocktail - West Hollywood after listening to this episode! And, not to worry, if you aren't brave enough to make an attempt at a few drinks you can always head to the West Hollywood location that will happily whip it up for you in no time.

Make sure you go back and listen if you missed Part 1 of this two part episode!

Oh Mannequin!!

Oh Mannequin!!

Listen and hear how this native Alaskan began his visual display and merchandise career and then moved to West Hollywood to make a splash in the much larger Los Angeles market working in special events that lead him to creating his own business in 2005, Oh Mannequin and All Things Visual.  Chadmichael Morrisette has created window displays for boutiques throughout West Hollywood and Los Angeles, including some that created quite a stir and caught the attention of CNN!

Chadmichael talks with We Know WeHo about the history of the display window and the "street art" that used to draw customers into the stores.  He shares where he gets his inspiration from, and his favorite window displays in West Hollywood and the US.  With over 2,000 mannequins in his collection, including an original "Emmy"from the Mannequin movie (starring Andrew McCarthy & Kim Cattrall), Chadmichael Morrisette is living a real-life dream like the movie as his displays are truly amazing art installations.

We Know Where to Go - Hastings, Nebraska

We Know Where to Go - Hastings, Nebraska

Listen to the inaugural podcast of "We Know Where To Go" from the award winning podcast We Know WeHo, a podcast supporting the local businesses of West Hollywood, California.  On the show, anything outside of West Hollywood is considered Weho adjacent…and that covers Beverly Hills to New York to Paris!

Approaching the third year of the podcast, Host Tracy Paaso is expanding beyond West Hollywood to highlight other cities - with the same mission of supporting small businesses.  Mikey Consbruck, former owner of V Wine Room and one on the show's former co-hosts, is from Nebraska and has recently returned to his home state to live.

Most people don’t likely think of Nebraska as a destination vacation spot, but you might change your mind after this podcast!  This flyover state has much to offer and is definitely worth a visit…especially if you are an avid cyclist like Tracy.  Mikey gives an overview of this midwestern state that is a short drive from Denver and accessible by most major and budget airline carriers (United, Delta, American, Southwest, Frontier etc.).   He takes a deeper dive into the town of Hastings, that ranks as the #5 or #6 cities in Nebraska with a population of approximately 24,000.

Listen to the small businesses highlighted from Hastings, and like Tracy, you may be putting Nebraska on your "Places to Travel" list for 2023....especially when you learn that Kool-Aid was invented in Hastings!

Bravo Toast with Jack Della Femina

Bravo Toast with Jack Della Femina

Shark-tank obsessed best friends Jack Della Femina and Nathan Katz had the idea for a pop-up in January 2020 and landed on the idea for avocado toast.   After successful pop-ups in West Hollywood, Brooklyn and The Hamptons, Jack and Nathan opened up their first brick and mortar location in West Hollywood in January 2022 on Doheny Drive.

Many restaurants offer avocado toast on their menus, but “Bravo Toast” has carved out a niche in the restaurant space by offering mainly assorted toasts.  There are a few secrets to a great toast, the first being the actual toast that is locally sourced from Bub and Grandma’s Bread.  However, their savory burrata is flown in daily from an undisclosed cheese vendor in New York City.  Bravo Toast is located at 632 1/2 Doheny Drive and is open Tuesday - Sunday from 8:00am - 4:00pm.

Better Than Sex LA

Better Than Sex LA

Do you have a sweet tooth and love desserts?  Then this episode is for you!  Better Than Sex is an all desserts restaurant located on the Melrose Corridor many consider to be West Hollywood (although the official zip code is designated Los Angeles).  Little did we know this West Coast only location of Better Than Sex is situated in what is known as "Cavity Corner" with close neighbors Winchell's Donuts & Milk Bar.

Patricia Catallo and her husband Alan fell in love with everything about this exclusively dessert restaurant concept on a trip to Key West from Miami.  They brought the concept out West after saying 'YES" to a franchising opportunity and were approved for a prime spot on Melrose Avenue.  The menu will make most blush with tongue and cheek named desserts like the "Peanut Butter Perversion", the "Kinky Key Lime Pie", and the "Pop My Cherry" one year anniversary special on the menu through May 9th.

We are excited to announce the We Know WeHo podcast, is now entering our third season and changes are afoot as Tracy bids farewell to co-host Mikey Consbruck as he has moved back home to Nebraska to fulfill his life's journey.  V Wine Room is staying open for many years to come, and Mikey will continue on as co-host on We Know Vino with Tracy.  Follow us on Instagram @weknowweho_official for upcoming monthly wine events! i

We Know Vino - Solvang Garagiste Tasting

We Know Vino - Solvang Garagiste Tasting

Check out this episode of We Know Vino and hear highlights of the wines tasted at the Garagiste Festival in Solvang.  A "Garagiste" wine maker produces less than 2,000 cases a year of wine. (Fun Wine Fact: One barrel of wine makes 24 cases).  Many of these wines are not available for purchase outside of the label's wine club or tasting facility.  Find out which wines Mikey tasted that he is bringing into V Wine Room in West Hollywood for your tasting pleasure.  Here are a few of the wines Mikey tasted:

  • Diablo Cellars - From Paso Robles and only work with Spanish varietals - Albariño & Tempranillo
  • Cavaletti - Chardonnay
  • Camins 2 Dreams - From winemaker Tara Gomez (women owned, BIPOC & LGBTQ) - Syrah & Grenache
  • Dusty Nabor - Grenache (Mikey’s eyes rolled in the back of his head) & Cabernet
  • El Lugar - Pinot Noir Blanc
  • MCV - Tannant
  • Purple Dragon Cellars - 100% Roussanne (this is a rare find!)
  • Quench & Temper - Graciano blends
  • Seagrape - Gewürtraminer
  • Seven Oxen Estate Wines

Here is the comprehensive list of winemakers who poured at the Solvang Garagiste event.

SAVE THE DATE for the Los Angeles Garagiste event on July 22nd & 23rd, 2022.

We Know Vino - January New Releases

From the We Know WeHo podcast team, a monthly special edition podcast episode all about wine! This is the time of year for new white and rosė releases and Mikey Consbruck, owner of V Wine Room,  is excited about the Grenache Blanc, Pinot Blanc, and Viognier varietals that will be starting to hit the market in February.  He shares with Tracy his recent trip up to Santa Barbara Wine Country and some amazing wines he tasted from winemaker Sonja Magdevski including her Clementine Carter Grenache Blanc and a new cool climate Spanish Garnacha (Grenache).  Mikey also fell in love with a rosė he tasted at Demetria with watermelon tasting notes.  Tracy ask Mikey's picks for Rhone specific wine clubs to join and he recommends Tensley, Four Brothers and Larner Vineyards.

With so much wine and so little time, we leave you with Mikeys rule of thumb - “Just drink what you like...”

V Wine Room has 85 wines by the glass and offers 20% on bottles to go.  Insider tip:  ask your V Wine Room server to pair your wine with the perfect cheese and you can order to cheese & meat to go for an at- home wine and cheese pairing.

Labor Day BBQ Wine Pairings with the new Co-Host, Mikey Consbruck

Labor Day BBQ Wine Pairings with the new Co-Host, Mikey Consbruck

This week's episode kicks off the change of season as the summer months wind down and a change is afoot with the We Know WeHo Co-Host spot.  Former guest and owner of V Wine Room, Mikey Consbruck, steps into the Co-Host seat and brings his love of food, wine and West Hollywood to the mic.  This Nebraska native first appeared in the year end episode wrap with a list of recommended bubbles to ring in the New Year.  He subsequently made an appearance on the Valentine's Day episode and more recently in August with a list of his summer sipping picks.

Tracy can't resist and asks Mikey for some wine pairings to compliment a favorite local BBQ spot, Bludso's, in celebration of Labor Day weekend. BBQ is always a good meal choice, regardless of season, so check out the picks for Texas BBQ, Mac & Cheese, and Key Lime Pie from Bludso's. Mikey gives a run down of new openings happening in his part of West Hollywood and Tracy shares a few finds in a new neighborhood that has popped up along two blocks of Sycamore just on the WeHo border.

Steve Lococo from B2V Salon

Steve Lococo from B2V Salon

This week’s episode features Steve Lococo, a master stylist and owner of B2V Salon in West Hollywood.  He is one of West Hollywood’s legacy businesses after beginning his salon adventures in 1985 on Santa Monica Blvd.   This episode begins with a little nostalgia as Steve recounts the days of the Tropicana Hotel and the train that ran through the center of the city right down the middle of Santa Monica Blvd.

B2V is situated in an old bungalow setting and adapted well to pivot their services after three different mandated closures from the State and La County impacting salon businesses.  In addition to creating a serene outdoor salon on the deck, Steve and his team are offering a number of express services in addition to the full salon treatment experience.

Our two hosts particularly enjoy talking to Steve about their hair care given their love of the poolside lounging and sunny ocean swims.  Steve has some great tips for Tracy’s curly blonde hair and Maxine’s dark brunette that can have a brassy tendency with too much time in the sun.  Give this episode a listen and you may learn a tip or two for your own coiffed look.

Lady Buds Director CJ Russo

Lady Buds Director CJ Russo

This week's episode features long-time West Hollywood resident, CJ Russo, who is a director, producer and writer of documentary films.  She is no stranger to the film festival arena, with six short films playing at Outfest over the years, and winning an award for the Best Documentary Short with her film "Straight Down the Aisle" - confessions of lesbian bridesmaids.  CJ's most recent project, Lady Buds, is her first feature documentary film that is making an appearance at Outfest 2021 (Los Angeles' LGBTQ Film Festival) before it lights the worldwide film festival circuit on fire.

"Lady Buds is a feature documentary that tells the story of six courageous women who come out of the shadows of the cannabis underground to enter the newly legal market. With deep-pocketed corporations taking over the industry, these trailblazers risk everything to make their American Dream come true in the very market they helped create."

Lady Buds kicked off its film festival screening schedule with a world premiere at the Canadian Hot Docs Film Festival earlier this year and Angelinos have the opportunity to catch a viewing at a very special sneak peek showing at Outfest on Friday, August 20th.

Felicia Carbajal, one of the women featured in Lady Buds, also joins the We Know WeHo interview and brings her perspective as an activist in the LatinX, LGBTQ+ and cannabis communities to the conversation.  Felicia provides insight about the gay history of cannabis and how queer activists were a big reason for the legalization of this industry and her personal involvement in providing cannabis to Bay Area AIDS patients in the 1990's.

It is June and that means it is Pride Month, especially in West Hollywood!  We Know WeHo is celebrating by featuring LGBTQ businesses.  This week we are excited to talk to Todd Barnes who is the General Manager of the Abbey.

The Abbey was founded by David Cooley in 1991 and got its start as a small coffee shop.  Over the past 30 years the Abbey has grown to become a West Hollywood institution, home of the Gay Walk of Fame, Elizabeth Taylor’s favorite pub, and a community center. A favorite of celebrities, locals and tourists alike, there is no better place to meet old friends, make new ones, enjoy a generous 10-ounce martini, eat a delicious meal and just kick back and have fun.  Insider tip: the bakery inside has delicious sweets and the key lime pie and ding dong are not to be missed!

Farm Cup Coffee

Farm Cup Coffee

Season two of We Know WeHo kicks off featuring a brand new business this week in the guest spotlight!  Farm Cup Coffee opened last week with a ribbon cutting ceremony with Mayor Lindesy Horvath!

In 2017, founders Tony and Emerson took their very first trip as a couple to the Mayan Riviera in Mexico. While they were there, they passed by a VW camper outfitted as a mobile coffee shop. They didn't pay too much attention to it at the time, but it planted the seed to what would become Farm Cup Coffee.

The name Farm Cup Coffee came from the sustainable idea of farm-to-table food. Ethical food-sourcing has become essential to a sustainable future, so why not translate that to one of the most consumed beverages in the world?  They focus on organic single origin coffee directly sourced from the farm owners so you know exactly where your coffee comes from. The coffee is roasted at source when possible to ensure the farmers receive the highest profit for their craft.

This week We Know WeHo is joined by husband and wife team Esther and Blaine Vess who very recently launched a premium nonalcoholic sparkling wine called Semblance.  It is made from Chardonnay grapes from Monterey County and goes through the standard winemaking process, but the alcohol is removed before bottling it.  Esther and Blaine created to give people a great-tasting alternative to alcohol and help people fit in when other people are drinking alcohol.  Next in the line up is a nonalcoholic sparkling rosé that may arrive in time for summer sipping!  You can order Semblance online and be sure to reach out if you want to pour it at your bar or restaurant.

Chef Dakota Weiss of Sweetfin

The celebration of Women's History Month continues as Chef Dakota Weiss joins the We Know WeHo team as our featured guest.   Chef Dakota has literally cooked her away across America after having graduated from the Scottsdale Culinary Institute.  She got her start at Santa Fe's legendary Coyote Café, did a brief stint at Dallas' Mansion on Turtle Creek and then headed to Atlanta to study with world-class French Chef Bruno at Menard Ritz-Carlton in Buckhead where she became Chef de Cuisine for the Sarasota private Ritz-Carlton Beach Club.

Los Angeles foodies went wild when Dakota transferred out to Jer-ne at the Ritz-Carlton in Marina Del Rey, and Angeleno magazine named her "Best New Chef" in 2006.  She then found herself in the heart of West Hollywood at the Executive Chef at the Sunset Tower's Hollywood A-list dining room on.  Chef Dakota helped open Parc in Philadelphia and returned to her California roots reopen Santa Monica's Shangri-LA as their executive chef.  She served as the executive chef for Nine-Thirty restaurant and The Backyard at the W Westwood and was the executive chef and owner of Estrella, a rock and roll bohemian restaurant on The Sunset Strip.

Sweetfin, an all-raw fish casual dining restaurant is her newest venture.  Sweetfin is a healthful, chef-driven, California inspired poké and plant based bowl concept that uses local produce, sustainable fish, and innovative ingredients.  Their entire menu is gluten free and all of their menu items are made in-house, from scratch, daily.  Sweetfin was founded in Santa Monica, CA in 2015 and has eleven locations servicing Southern California.  Check out the latest collaboration with Los Angeles celebrity fitness trainer, Lacey Stone, and order a Protein Power Bowl, a Brain Booster or Immunity Bowl.

Chef Dakota competed as a chef-testant on Top Chef Texas and at one time served her own brand of innovative gourmet popcorn at Dakota's POP Parlor.  (Insider tip - try the white chocolate, matcha, coconut and sesame seed gourmet MATCHA POPCORN at Sweetfin!)

OUR Month featuring the Women of WeHo

OUR Month featuring the Women of WeHo

This week’s episode is all about Women’s History Month and is an ode to the women, past and present, who have made an impact on West Hollywood.  This is a We Know WeHO SOLO episode if it were, with no special guest this week - but Maxine turns the tables on Tracy and swaps seats to interview the creator of the We Know WeHo podcast.

Although West Hollywood is most famous for being the center of “Boys Town” and freedom of expression in the Rainbow District, women have played an integral part in the fabric of the Creative City’s history.  Tracy and Maxine are very proud of this as they recount the story of Marilyn Monroe and Ella Fitzgerald at the Mocambo Room on The Sunset Strip in 1955 and Alla Nazimova’s infamous Garden of Allah Hotel where the Hollywood elite stayed and played that opened in January of 1927.  One cannot recount the history of WeHo without mentioning the AIDS crisis and the jam-packed weekly support meetings called “Hay Rides” lead by metaphysical and spiritual pioneer Louise Hay in the West Hollywood Park auditorium and Project Angel Food founded by Marianne Williamson in 1989 to provide meals for home-bound HIV patients.

Listen to hear all the amazing women that have been featured on We Know WeHo and be sure to go back into the archives and give a listen to any episodes you may have missed!

Mystery Pier Books

Mystery Pier Books

This week's guest are the charming father and son team, Harvey and Louis Jason, who opened Mystery Pier Books in a charming English green bungalow located down a narrow alley on the Sunset Strip in August of 1998.  They carry exclusively First Edition literature:  including collectible books both fine and rare, that are mostly signed; rare cinema material, scripts signed by the shop's many celebrity clients and general Hollywoodiana.  One can find books signed by the likes of Dickens, Hemingway, D.H. Lawrence and even the great Harry Houdini.  Mystery Pier Books is internationally renowned and is called "One of the Most Important First Edition Bookshops in the U.S.". and is listed #1 in the Ten Best Hidden Gems of L.A.

Listen as Tracy sits down with these two lovely English Gentlemen and hears all about the treasures tucked away on the bookshelves including works by Anne Frank, Agatha Christie, and a true first edition of "Gone With the Wind" signed by Margaret Mitchell - a great lineup honoring Women's History Month.  You might be surprised by the celebrity clientele who are fan favorites of this charming little tucked away literature nook off Sunset, and even more surprised that Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) is a regular who has been coming for over 20 years.

Tracy wants to know if Prince Harry, Oprah or Lady Gaga have walked through the doors...give the episode a listen and find out for yourself!  Mystery Pier Books is open seven days a week from noon until 5pm. (Insider Tip:  grab a tasty Mediterranean bite at Pi on Sunset next door on your way out of this magical literary spot)

Cocktails for a Cause with Nick Meyer from Umbrella Hospitality Company

Cocktails for a Cause with Nick Meyer from Umbrella Hospitality Company

This week's episode is a follow up to last week's conversation with Shannon Morton from Black Women Lead as the team talks to Nick Meyer.  Nick Meyer is the Director of Operations at the Umbrella Hospitality Company that has a portfolio of several unique and trendy cocktail establishments in Los Angeles:  Melrose Umbrella Company, LONO Hollywood and The Corner Door.  Hear how quickly the team pivoted to offer to-go cocktails to their customers to adapt and how quickly a new endeavor, Umbrella Taco Co., came to life early on in the March 2020 shutdown.

The Melrose Umbrella Company knows it is all about community, and supporting each other and those in need.  Their Cocktails for Cause program, supported by EJ Gallo, features two to-go cocktails offered the month of February to help support the community programs at Black Women Lead.  The art on Blacker the Berry, from a local young queer Black artist can be purchased separately and tiki lovers will definitely want to put an order in for the second offering - the Chief Lapu Lapu tiki cocktail kit.

This week's episode is all about cocktails, community and magical COVID pivots. Enjoy and make sure to purchase art or order up some cocktails if you are near to West Hollywood!

Black Women Lead with Shannon Morton

Black Women Lead with Shannon Morton

This week local activist Shannon Morton, founder of Black Women Lead, joins the We Know WeHo team to share all the incredible service projects she is heading up through her non-profit organization that was founded last year in the month of June.  Shannon's efforts are deeply rooted and all about helping the community and those in need.  Black Women Lead give away 600 hot meals a week and 800 bags of groceries through the Black Women Lead Brown Bag program.  After a trip to skid row downtown LA, Shannon saw a need for hygiene supplies and has recently started a Black Women Lead hygiene kit that is handed out in a backpack to those in need.

For the month of February, she has teamed up local bar owners at Melrose Umbrella Company to create a cocktail, Blacker the Berry, with a label created by a young Black queer artist.  EJ Gallo is donating $1 for every cocktail to go sold and Melrose Umbrella Company is matching the donation.

Listen to hear Shannon's list of local Black owned businesses near West Hollywood and of course, a few favorite places to eat, shop and play in WeHo.
