111. Mindset Mini: Benefits of Two Different Households

What if the differences between our co-parenting homes are good for our kids?

Asking ourselves this question can help shift our perspective from seeing differences in co-parenting as negative to considering them as potentially beneficial for our kiddos.

The question encourages us to collect evidence on the positive aspects of diversity in parenting styles and to look for where they foster empathy, adaptability, and understanding in our children.

Check out this short & sweet episode to see if asking yourself one question might shift how you feel about co-parenting (even just a smidgen).

108. Mindset Mini: How to Navigate the 3 Phases of Your Divorce

📚 Any good story has a beginning, middle & end.

Your divorce story is no different.

In this week's podcast episode, I'm sharing a concept from a favorite book of mine: Bruce Feiler's book Life Is In the Transitions.

Bruce traveled across the country interviewing over 100 people who had gone through major, identity-shifting life changes and found many common themes with how folks navigated the transition.

One theme was the phases that we go through as we shift from our old lives to our new. He named these the Long Goodbye, the Messy Middle, and New Beginnings.

Using this naming during and after our divorce can help us cope with uncertainty, bring us more peace, and give us a sense of what's coming.  Tune in for actionable advice on navigating divorce with resilience and grace, inspired by Feiler's wisdom.

Happy listening!

I’ll share helpful examples of age-appropriate communication so that you can ensure kids feel safe and supported during divorce's turbulent times.

Discover how to shift gears from blaming to nurturing, for your benefit and your kids'. Tune in and embrace the spouse-parent mindset shift.

104. What To Do When Your Ex (Or Their New Partner) Annoys You

What can we do when something our co-parent (or their new partner) does regularly ANNOYS the beegeezums out of us???

I share a specific example and the Reflective Practice I recommend, which includes:

1. Check-in with Yourself: Take a moment to assess your emotions using the Anger Scale [introduced by Maggie Reyes in Episode 98] and whether how you are feeling warrants action.

2. Embrace Curiosity: Ask yourself if your emotional response is proportionate and appropriate.

3. Clarify Your Desires: Identify what you REALLY WANT in the given situation. Whether it's seeking more connection with your child or feeling appreciated, clarity helps us focus on the goal and not get distracted.

4. Uncover Root Causes: Delve into what’s underneath your emotional reactions. I share the power of asking “why.”

5. Connect with Your Body: Pay attention to how these feelings show up physically.

Tune in to discover a holistic approach to co-parenting, where emotional intelligence takes center stage, allowing for smoother interactions. 🌟

98. How to Get More of What You Really Want with Maggie Reyes

This week I've got one of my coaching & podcast heroes on the podcast: Maggie Reyes is the Queen of having a great marriage.

I start the podcast by explaining that I've listened to her podcast (The Marriage Life Coach Podcast) for the past few years-- all while I haven't been married. Why? Because everything she teaches is SO helpful in any and every relationship-- including our co-parenting relationships. Plus she is just such a fun, warm, insightful woman to listen to!

We also share a love of romance novels, so of course we have to dive into that a bit... (here's my recommendation and hers).

Then it's on to concrete, actionable concepts that will help improve your co-parenting relationship.

Some of our topics include:

  • Maggie's Anger Scale and how to use it
  • Your choices when things aren't fair
  • The Power of 1 and how to use it to improve co-parenting
  • Letting patterns make things easier for you

I think you're going to love meeting Maggie and get some very useful take-aways that you can apply to any relationships in your life!

Enjoy!

97. Using "Fair Play" in Co-Parenting with Frederick Van Riper

97. Using "Fair Play" in Co-Parenting with Frederick Van Riper

Could a "card game" make dividing up parenting responsibilities with your co-parent easier?

Ever since Elise Buie in Episode #75 told me about Eve Rodsky's book "Fair Play," I've wanted to dive into how we can use this system or "card game" to divide up tasks in co-parenting.

When I met Frederick Van Riper, a coach for men & dads and a Certified Fair Play facilitator, I knew he'd be a great guest to answer all my questions.

In this episode, we dive into:

  • What is the "Fair Play" system
  • How can you use it if you're partnered, co-parenting, or on your own with kiddos
  • Common challenges to get started
  • How Frederick's relationship with his wife went from good to great after implementing Fair Play
  • Why your co-parent thriving is in your best interest

Fair Play lays out all the work that goes into maintaining our household and raising kids. I'd recommend reading Fair Play to anyone who is in a partnership, hopes to be in a new relationship, or is co-parenting (no matter the temperature of your co-parenting relationship).

Even if you don't imagine sitting down with your co-parent to work through the "card game," getting clear for yourself on what is in your hand versus what is in your co-parent's can reduce stress and confusion.

Check it out!

93. Supporting Your Teen with Dr. Myka Hanson

We’re heading to Minnesota this week to catch Dr. Myka Hanson and talk all things teens & co-parenting.

Dr. Hanson has spent the last 30 years working with teens and tweens in a variety of capacities. She taught high school English for over 15 years and has a Masters in Special Education and a Ph.D in psychology and somatics.

She leads Teen Forward, a coaching program that honors all teens as complete, creative, amazing individuals while helping them and their parents navigate the obstacles of adolescence.

Yes, not-gonna-lie, I did invite her on to ask her all my questions as a mom-of-a-teen. 😉

I also wanted to get her take on being a stepparent of two teens and navigating co-parenting.

I’m SOOO inspired by the care she brings to her work. I did get a little teary when she talked about helping teens broach big topics with their parents-- I DARE YOU not to as well 🥲

I took many notes and if you have a teen, I’m sure you will too.

If you feel like your teen could use some more support from an adult who truly gets them, I encourage you to reach out to Dr. Myka.

90. How Changing Your Questions Helps You Make More Decisions

90. How Changing Your Questions Helps You Make More Decisions

Think you need more answers & solutions in your life?

Maybe what you actually need are different questions.

Today I share how to surface invisible questions affecting your day and how to use questions to help you make the decisions that will get you more of what you want.

Here are a few sound-bites:

"Specificity is the enemy of worry and anxiety. When we get very specific about the situation and all the different ways that we could choose to navigate it, then we can dissolve our worry and our anxiety about it."

"Our brains love questions. They love to go on a hunt and be curious.  Let's feed our brains questions that light us up, that have us feeling empowered and capable."

"If you want to be making more decisions, if you want things to be changing and improving more in your life, then asking YOURSELF more questions is the first step to doing that."

"Identify the questions that you are not answering right now. I encourage you to write them down. Flush them out of your brain. Make your brain get specific about what the question is."

A few sample questions to play with or journal on:

  • If this fear or anxiety or anger suddenly, magically, disappeared, what would my life be like?

  • Which of my strengths are most helpful right now?

  • If all you could feel was love and appreciation for yourself, what would change?

  • If I knew with perfect certainty that I could handle anything that came my way and I'd be fine, how would I live differently?

Bring on the questions!

86. Don't Let Your Past Weigh You Down with Tommy Geary

This week I invited fellow coach, parent, and podcaster, Tommy Geary to share his ideas on how to stop letting our past weigh us down.

For many of us on the other side of our divorce, we can still feel weighed down-- even years out-- by why the relationship ended or things that happened during the divorce process.

Time to get that weight off!

Tommy and I chat about:

- How carrying our past can be like packing for a backpacking trip

- Why guilt, shame, and anger can make decision-making hard

- The sneaky ways our stories about our past relationships can affect what we do today

- and my 2 rules about when the kids can interrupt a podcast recording 😂

Tommy's the host of the Durable Dad Podcast, owner of Tommy G. Coaching and his mission is to bring coaching to men who have a powerful influence on their work culture, communities, and families.

Tommy helps take the pressure off high-performing men so they can be better leaders, husbands, and dads. His journey from – college football player, to snowboarder, to corporate leader, to meditation teacher, to business owner and men's coach – shows how a "normal guy" can level up with mindset work.

Enjoy the episode!

80. Mediation with Erika Englund

80. Mediation with Erika Englund

Today's guest knows divorce inside & out.

Not only did she divorce when her kids were 1 and 3, but in the same year she gave up her career as a divorce attorney and chose to focus entirely on mediation.

Listen in to hear why Erika Englund says "I'm the divorce lawyer who never won a case", and why she feels like everyone wins in mediation.

Erika believes that good people deserve good divorce, and it is her life's work - as a lawyer, mediator, strategist, professor, and mother - to make that happen.

Tune in to hear:

- the George Castanza's method of managing high-conflict divorce,

- how mediation can reduce stress for parents and children,

- why conflict is the problem for our kids, NOT divorce,

- why you don't need to be singing Kumbaya with your ex in order to use mediation,

- and a bunch of great thought-provoking questions that Erika asks her clients.

Erika also offers a book recommendation if you're trying to decide if divorce is the right move for you: Taking Space: How to Use Separation to Explore the Future of Your Relationship, by Robert Buchicchio.

This is such a great conversation about navigating divorce, how to use mediation, and how to set your focus on long-range goals.

PS- Do you know someone thinking about divorce or at the beginning of their process, please share this episode with them!

73. Which Story Are YOU Telling?

Every divorce is different, but given our quirky human brains, we often talk about them in the same ways.

I coach my clients on the "story" they currently tell about their divorce (to themselves and to others) and how it can shift and change over time.

"Editing" or "rewriting" our story can magically✨unlock new, unexpected possibilities for us.

It's especially helpful if we've been feeling unable to move on, stuck in yucky co-parenting drama, or feeling a lot of resentment or anger.

When you're ready to change your story, you can do so without making past versions wrong or bad.

Listen in to hear the 3 types of stories most folks tell about their divorce and compare it to how you talk about your divorce now.

65. Value-led Decisions with Holistic Alcohol Coach Mary Wagstaff

Your values can be your compass in decision-making and creating massive change in your life.

In this episode with holistic alcohol coach Mary Wagstaff, learn how:

  • to identify the personal values you want to cultivate in your relationship with your kids, your Ex, your friends, and yourselves
  • to use them in decision-making— especially when saying no to things that aren’t aligned
  • to recognize others' values, like those of an Ex, in order to reduce conflict & predict behavior
  • to turn values into habits.

All of this is to help you enjoy your life more TODAY and to create the future you crave.

Happy Listening!

63. New Identity with Wendy Sloneker

Divorce is an identity changer. After divorce, you may go through periods where part of your old identity is gone but you haven't fully formed your new identity. How you thought your life would unfold is no longer entirely in the cards. You might feel adrift, unmoored. That's totally normal!

I chat with coach Wendy Sloneker today about how to:

  • support ourselves during a period of shifting identity
  • talk about our emotions with our kids in a way that helps them process what's going on for them
  • tune in to our inner voice & desires in order to find our new identity
  • give ourselves breaks from grief as part of the healing process

This episode will help you understand the stage of identity shift you are in right now and offer helpful tools to bring you more peace as you continue on your journey. Enjoy!
