Susan Brennan is the CEO of 5E Advanced Materials, a company that is positioned to become a vertically integrated global leader in BORON+ advanced materials with a focus on enabling decarbonization.

BORON+ products target critical, high value applications within electric transportation, clean energy, food and domestic security. 5E’s advanced materials business is underpinned by its low cost, light environmental touch boron resource in Southern California, which is designated Critical Infrastructure by the U.S. government and serves as the largest known new conventional boron deposit globally. 5E’s resource quality, domestic supply source, and downstream processing capabilities provide a competitive advantage given customer product specifications, scarcity of resource, and reliance on unstable, international supply.

Tony Kono began his career in communications as a Senior publicist and marketing executive with experience developing integrated, proactive media communications programs building on a previous career in financial journalism. As a child, his grandmother sent him to an environmental camp where he learned about estuaries and ecosystems, which sparked his lifelong interest in the environment.

After Superstorm Sandy, Tony reached out to the Mayor of Brick, NJ, John Ducey, to ask how he could help, resulting in his appointment to the Environmental Commission. Tony and his team have had numerous accomplishments within his community, including the “Pick Up Brick” events for school and scout groups, partnering with local NGOs like Clean Ocean Action on Beach Sweeps, Save Barnegat Bay, and of utmost importance, Tony organized his community to save 30 acres of woods from being destroyed for a high-end housing development.

What's next? Stay tuned... Tony and his team are looking at becoming a hub for Community Solar development to vastly expand support to low-income and seniors by reducing the cost of their electricity bills.

Mark Legacy is a true polymath as well as a hands-on inventor focused on solving complex problems for a world in need of climate change solutions with an environmental justice focus. His work has spanned the construction industry, having worked as a carpenter, mason, builder, and welder as well as a blacksmith.

For 8 years he was a competitive cyclist until a motor vehicle accident left him with a permanent disability. He had to quit college due to not being able to afford the tuition. But he could afford a library card! and reimagined his future. He embraced mental work and began the many related studies that would help confirm the proof of concept for his future inventions. Without formal training, he devoted himself to research and development within the marine energy storage, design and structural engineering industry culminating with a patent granted without prior art in 2014 for Humpback Hydro, a long duration pumped hydro energy storage solution (US 8823195-B2).

More patents are in process.

In the past few years, 7 crucial insurance carriers have either ceased property coverage in the State of California or severely reduced the coverages offered. On Friday, September 22, 2023, the California Insurance Commissioner announced key changes to the insurance industry in an effort to bring these carriers back.

The question is, will it work? Rex Frazier, President of the Personal Insurance Federation of California (PIFC), discusses these proposed ideas in detail and outlines what the “catches” are.

Globally, Extreme Wildfire Events (EWEs) are becoming more frequent. They burn bigger, at a higher intensity, and can quickly sprawl out of control accounting for 80% of total associated fire-damages and are increasingly contributing to global greenhouse gas emissions and worsening health impacts from pollutants.

Jay Stalnacker, Technical Lead for Wildfire with XPRIZE, has 27 years of experience providing government and private industry health, safety, disaster, and emergency management services. His experience in emergency and disaster management includes serving as Operations Branch Director for the Pacific Northwest Federal Type 1 Incident Management Team (PNW2). PNW2 is one of the only eight federal teams that respond across the world for complex disaster management. Mr. Stalnacker previously served in non-military government special operations and a member of the elite Federal Smokejumper Program and have served as a commissioned SWAT police officer.

Stephen Pallrand is the president of Home Front Build. His background in construction, architecture, architectural history, painting, and set design has aided him in pulling together the diverse group of artists, craftsmen, architects, and designers who work on the “CarbonShack” projects.

His father was a scientist/educator and his mother was an educator and patron of the arts. This exposure to art, science, and education led him to realize that building in an environmentally conscious manner is unimportant if you do not communicate the need and educate the consumer, for there are no green buildings, only green users. Our understanding of the environment is changing radically and so is the fate of the earth based on our actions as a civilization. Art and architecture have always played a critical role in representing the knowledge and culture of a period. Pallrand's use of the CarbonShack projects is to transform our shelters and homes into vehicles of change.

His programs and teachings transform individuals, organizations, and communities by empowering them to recover and expertly transform their food waste into a remarkable quality of compost that dramatically elevates soil, plant, animal, human, and planet health. It is Steven’s core belief that composting on campus with sound techniques is the single most important and powerful act that children and school communities can do to respond to climate change and create a healthier world for future generations.

Michael Schneider is the Founder of Streets For All, which is igniting the transportation revolution in Los Angeles, by fighting for bus lanes, bike lanes, and pedestrian improvements, in order to create a healthier environment and stable climate.

As a native Angeleno, it was built into Michael’s brain from birth that the only way to get around Los Angeles is by driving a car. And starting on his 16th birthday at 8am at the DMV, that’s how he got around. Until the financial crisis in 2008. With his day job as a tech entrepreneur getting rocky along with the economy, Michael had to make some lifestyle changes –including getting rid of his expensive car lease. After a couple years of borrowing his Grandfather’s classic car – which was in the shop more than it was usable – Michael started to experiment with getting around town using a bicycle, something that seemed “crazy” and “impossible” to his native LA brain. For the past ten years, Michael has gone all in, just getting around town on his bicycle – even to and from LAX, including with his wife and 3 kids.
