Spirit of Discernment: Political Education
Discernment or to discern means to know or recognize. Throughout the Spirit of Discernment series, I will be sitting down with amazing people to discuss what it means to distinguish between what is real and what is not.
In these 4 episodes, we will be touching on all the ways various entities, whether it be the State, your friends, your teachers, the media, or spiritual practitioners, try and alter our minds, our behaviors, our souls, our realities, and our senses of self.
—
In this episode, I sit down with Sunny and Elias, to discuss the importance of political education, American political activism, and how we spot bad faith political actors!
For an hour, we get into what political education means to us, the many ways in which one can acquire political education, and the perils that come without sound political knowledge!
In true icon fashion, we stay entertaining as hell, while also spittin straight facts. Giving y’all the 441 on how to cultivate political discernment!
I am so excited to share this series with y’all!! I started this project back in July and now, at the most divine timing, it’s finally time for it to grace yall’s lovely ears!
Enjoy! :)

S2E10: allegedly, they’re rewriting history?!
“Nobody is going to teach you your true history, teach you your true heroes, if they know that that knowledge will help set you free.”
- Assata Shakur
Do we truly remember our history? That is the question we ask ourselves in “S2E10: allegedly, they’re rewriting history?!” Throughout the episode, we discuss the many ways in which our understandings of the past have been erased, distorted, and manipulated, and the implications this has on our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
We go on to explore how we can become aware of revisionist narratives in order to pursue a true and liberatory understanding of what happened in our past, recognizing the necessity of using our true history to guide and inform the steps we take towards our future.

S2E9: allegedly, we're parenting our parents?!
In “S2E9: allegedly, we're parenting our parents?!“ we hit on a much-requested topic: parenting. While none of us asked to be here, all of us are here… in other words, we all have parents! Whether they be biological, adoptive, step, or chosen, our parents have a major influence on us, for better or for worse. In this episode, we touch on navigating toxic parents, the demands of parenthood, and healing your inner child. Furthermore, we discuss how, as a society, we often wade into eugenicist territory when we discuss/determine “fit” for parenthood. Tune in as we ask ourselves about the effects of the nuclear family on parenting and childhood, as well as what it means to break generational curses (read: trauma). We hope you enjoy!

S2E8: allegedly, i'm asking for a friend?!
Before your ex comes back this Venus Retrograde, today we decided to give y’all a heads up and talk about the breakups! And no, not with that ex-bae, but with that ex-friend. In “S2E8: allegedly, i'm asking for a friend?!“ we talk about the grieving process of a friend breakup and what we’ve learned from our own personal friendship breakups.
Building off of “S1E12: allegedly, monogamy isn't it?!” (in this episode, Olivia refers to it as S1E7, but she meant 12! :)) we continue our discussion, touching on everything including love, social dynamics, conflict, vulnerability, communication, and more. Although we center friendships in our discussion, this episode is applicable to all our interpersonal relationships.
All our love to the fabulous bell hooks for writing her book, All About Love: New Visions, that inspired a lot of this conversation today. Thank you.

S2E4: allegedly, life is but a dream?!
In “S2E4: allegedly, life is but a dream?!” we talk about something we all engage in for nearly a third of our lives: sleep! The place where we encounter our dreams and our imagination.
Western science, spiritual practitioners, and abolitionists have all come to varying and similar conclusions about the meaning and function of dreams and the imagination. In this episode, we attempt to synthesize it all, as we explore the dreamscape's existence as a place of refuge from reality.
This begs the question, are our dreams untouchable by our oppressors? What role does our imagination play in building a new world for ourselves and our society? How does the ability to dream affect our ability to process complex emotions and our collective social functioning? Join us on today’s episode as we delve into the topics of lucid dreaming, radical imagination, our personal and collective dreams for the future, and everything in between!

S2E2: allegedly, the playground is a prison?!
We know how much our adult selves are shaped by our childhood and in "S2E2: allegedly, the playground is a prison?!" we delve deeper into the early education experience. More specifically, we get into how our current US early education system serves as an indoctrination site for the State and examine the many ways in which it corrodes our connection with the world, ourselves, and each other.
From seemingly innocuous pretzel stick reward systems to Gifted and Talented programs, join us as we discuss all the ways in which the early education system has shaped us to become the ideal American subject.
In true allegedly?! fashion, we conclude by asking the question, “So, what now?” and look to revolutionary educator, Paulo Freire, for ways we can start addressing the long-lasting effects of our early educational experiences and start engaging in a truly liberatory education.

S1E14: allegedly, we're keepin' it real?! vol. 2
In S1E14 of allegedly?!, we run back the realness of this season. Like our last “keepin’ it real” episode, we dive into a fun conversation about life, ourselves, the experiences we’ve been having, and the lessons we’ve been learning.
As we chat about the lessons we’ve learned throughout this past life cycle (ty Scorpio Full Moon), we dive into the behaviors and aspects of ourselves that stem from our childhood experiences and the realizations we’ve come to from doing that inner-child work. Beyond that, we get into our feelings about the continuous journey of self-improvement, growth, healing, the ‘good’ sides, and the potentially ‘bad’ sides!
In pretty perfect timing for the Taurus New Moon a couple of days ago, we end the conversation touching on radical self-love, what it means, and ways to practice self-love and care! We hope y’all enjoy the conversation!

We talk about how our society shapes our relationship with money and as a result, the importance of cultivating your own independent thought.
We explore how the labels of “rich” and “poor” affect how all of us navigate our society’s socioeconomic landscape, like how we relate to others, what we invest our energies into, and how we think about ourselves. Furthermore, how does being anti-capitalist shape the way we interact with money? Tap into the conversation!

S1E12: allegedly, monogamy isn't it?!
In S1E12 of allegedly?!, we talk about relationships. Specifically, romantic versus platonic ones. In one of our recent viral TikToks, we asked thought-provoking questions on what actual distinction exists between romantic and platonic relationships. This TikTok started some pretty remarkable dialogue, and we created this episode to really dive in. We all know our society puts an emphasis on romantic relationships. We discuss exactly why that is, and more importantly, question if this societal norm is something that we want to subscribe to as we navigate the relationships in our life. Is this prioritization of romantic relationships something organic to our nature as human beings? Is it a pervasive social norm that has just been force-fed to us since we were children? Join us as we touch on a bunch of topics related to relationships, ranging from energy exchanges to shared value systems!

Throughout this episode, we touch on all the connections and contradictions within science, religions, and spirituality. For so long, we’ve seen these particular topics be used to pit human beings against each other, but could there actually be more similarities than differences? We know every person has their practice that they subscribe to in order to connect to the Divine. At the end of the day, everybody is tryna go to Heaven, everyone wants peace, joy, freedom, and love.... or so we hope?! So whyyyy all the beef?! Let’s talk about it!

S1E10: allegedly, beauty is truly pain?!
In S1E10 of allegedly?!, we talk about beauty and desirability! Specifically, we talk about all the ways beauty has been rendered as a tool of violence. We set out to explore the ways beauty has served to only strengthen the holds that fatphobia, colorism, ableism, ageism, and many other -isms and -phobias have in our society, while also recognizing the role we have in upholding beauty standards that not only inflict violence on those around us but also ourselves. However, in recognizing that, how do we move forward? How do we honor the beauty in ourselves and everything that surrounds us, despite acknowledging the ways in which the very concept of beauty has been used to enact so much harm?! In S1E6 of allegedly?!, we discuss angel numbers, numerology, spiritual divination tools, and just communicating with the universe! Whether it be 222 in a phone number or someone telling you to make a wish at 11:11, numbers do have energy and they are, in fact, one of the many ways the universe chooses to communicate with us (if, of course, you’re ready to listen). Yeah, Google can give you a long list of possible meanings, but at the end of the day, we gotta rely on our intuition to understand the message. Join us as we try to decipher the language of this beautiful universe!

S1E5: allegedly, white supremacy has colonized spirituality?!
In S1E5 of allegedly?!, we talk about the bitches in everyone's mouths rn… the crystal, astrology, namaste™ bitches. Are they just colonizers in harem pants orrr is spirituality actually fundamental to navigating this crazy universe? We wanna know, is there actually anything “new” about New Age spirituality, or are we doing that thing again where we appropriate other cultures… We’re also gonna be honest with you, there’s more to manifestation than what they tell you on TikTok. Join us as we challenge current understandings of spirituality, and let us know what spirituality topics you want to hear more about for a future Part 2!

S1E4: allegedly, the government is in on it too?!
In S1E4 of allegedly?!, we talk about our government and all that lays beyond what meets the eye. Or rather, beyond what they teach us in history class. From surveillance, to psychological warfare, to espionage, we wanna talk about our government's not-so-clean 243-year-old track record. Filled with its fair share of lies, violence, and exploitation, we have questions?! COINTELPRO, MKUltra, the Dark Web, illegal domestic surveillance... the list could go on and on. Join us as we talk about all these things and more in an attempt to interrogate our government and her role in all the madness!

S1E3: allegedly, we're not sick... they are?!
In S1E3 of allegedly?!, we talk about the bitch whopping a lot of our asses rn. Mental illness. Who is defining what it means to be mentally ill and what it means to be well? What does it mean when the people who manufacture our illnesses also sell us the cure? When THIS many of us are “sick,” we just need to ask, is it really us that’s sick, or is it society that’s sick? Join us as we talk about social constructs of health, different cultural understandings of wellness, and the DSM-5, or as we like to call it, the WMB (White Man’s Book). Tune in and let us know your thoughts!

S1E2: allegedly, COVID-19 is not adding up?!
In S1E2 of allegedly?!, we talk about the main character of the globe right now, Miss Rona!!! Let’s be honest, Miss Rona is beating our asses, and the ruling class is. Eating. It. Up. With almost half a million American lives lost and approaching almost a year in quarantine, we’re here to talk about the fact that this shit is not normal?! What we can all agree on is that COVID-19 has changed all of our lives in more ways than one. Join us for the next 20 minutes, as we talk about whether or not we can trust the vaccine, our society’s response to COVID, and what we think the truth is beyond all the chaos.
