THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY #2: Existential Crisis Time!

THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY #2: Existential Crisis Time!

Note: This is a spoiler-free review of Chapters 9-20 of "The Picture of Dorian Gray."

Today, I share my thoughts on the second half of the classic "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde. This half of the book delves into the deeper and darker side of "Dorian Gray," both the man and the story. I discuss the good, the bad, and the morally gray of it all, plus a bonus little rant about societal beauty and aging standards and the relevance of this book in today's world.

Note: This is a spoiler-free review of Chapters 1-8 of "The Picture of Dorian Gray."

Today, I share my thoughts on the first half of the classic "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde. From Dorian himself, to Lord Henry's egotistical misogyny and Andrew Tate-like rants, I take a look at everything from the fantastic to the ugly parts of this story.

It by Stephen King: A Review

It by Stephen King: A Review

In today's episode, we take a look at one of Stephen King's most iconic stories: It. Take a seat and listen in as we examine the good, the bad, and the disturbing pieces that make up this beloved tale. We also discuss whether the good outweighs the disturbing, and what exactly I would rate this classic.

PSA: I watched the movies before I read the book knowing full well that makes me a disgrace to the reading community. Listen at your own risk.

Six of Crows: A Reader’s Shadow and Bone S2 Thoughts

Six of Crows: A Reader’s Shadow and Bone S2 Thoughts

In light of finally watching the new (2nd) season of Shadow and Bone, I'm back with some more thoughts on the books (both Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom) and the characters' portrayals in the series. We have more Wesper talk, more praise for Kaz and Inej, and even more kudos to the ever-marvelous Leigh Bardugo.

Atalanta by Jennifer Saint: A Review

Atalanta by Jennifer Saint: A Review

I’m back from my decades-long break and ready to tell you all about my reading escapades you’ve missed out on.

Tune into my latest review of Jennifer Saint's mythological retelling of the story of Atalanta.

We take a peek into everything from a popular romance trope turned on its head, to the lessons we can learn from a centuries-old myth. (This is mostly a love-riddled review wherein I praise the goddess that is Jennifer Saint (pun intended). But I do promise to give you a fair idea of whether this is the book, or the author, for you.)

The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse: A Review

The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse: A Review

Tune into Brooke's latest review of Sarah Pearse's thriller, The Sanatorium.

We look into everything from its questionable murder motives, to the possible shoehorned feminism at the end. (Don't be fooled. This is not a hate review. It is an honest look at my likes and dislikes of the story, and there are some of both!)

God Emperor of Dune by Frank Herbert: A Review

Tune into Brooke's latest review of the best book (in her humble opinion) in the classic Dune series: God Emperor of Dune by Frank Herbert.

We look into everything from the meaningful quotes of Dune, to the half-man, half-sandtrout running things.

The Selection by Kiera Cass: A Review

The Selection by Kiera Cass: A Review

We're back! (Or more specifically, one of us is back!)

As we take a shift toward our new format, we begin the second season of We Talk Books with a review of one of the most talked-about books that I have never read. I start out with a non-spoiler review of The Selection by Kiera Cass, highlighting my thoughts on the story, the characters, the romance, and the ever-talked-about names.

Midway through, I shift to a spoiler review (with plenty of warning, so you won't hear anything you don't want to.) I can't wait to share my new setup and know if you'd like more of these podcast reviews.

P.S. I hear now, as I listen to this podcast before releasing it, I said "Aspen-ish." It probably sounded like I said "Aspen. Ish." I meant Aspen kind of. Whoops.

WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS SPOILERS for Parts 4 - 6.

In this episode, we talk satisfying story endings, Kaz Brekker's badassery, the Crows' dad and...you guessed it: Wesper!

We also ponder the Crows' splitting of money, the odd-but-wonderful pairings introduced in the sequel, and Zemo because why not?

WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS SPOILERS for Parts 1 - 3.

Kanej is cool and all, but Wesper? They win. We're bringing all our hot takes up a notch as we enter part two of the Six of Crows duology.

And we still think Inej deserves all the love, as we should.

SIX OF CROWS #2: Platonic Hand Holding and Not-So-Platonic Wesper

SIX OF CROWS #2: Platonic Hand Holding and Not-So-Platonic Wesper

WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS SPOILERS for Parts 4 - 6.

Ready yourselves for a whole lot of doting on the trio that is Jesper, Wylan, and Inej (because why not?) We also touch the topic of Kanej once again, because how often do you find a couple that Brooke actually likes? Not that often. Laura's the shipper, for sure.

Also, Four of Crows for the win! In case you didn't catch it last time, find out our hot take that involves only caring about four of the main characters. (Yes, we get they're all important to the story. Yes, we get everybody has different tastes. No, we can't stand two of the Crows, and we're not sorry about it either.)

P.S. We would totally recommend reading, so you can have your own hot take on the Crows! Opinions of all shapes and sizes are welcome here.

SIX OF CROWS #1: The Anomaly of Kanej

SIX OF CROWS #1: The Anomaly of Kanej

WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS SPOILERS for Parts 1 - 3.

Fasten your seatbelts... Brooke found a couple she not only can stand, but she actually likes. Also, hear just how distasteful we find another certain couple. (No hurt feelings, shippers of all kinds. It's all in fun.) We're shocked at how similar our tastes are in relationships though.

In addition, we discuss just how correct Laura was in saying Wylan is one of the best characters before Brooke even started the book. What a guy.

Bonus: Find out how Doja Cat comes up in a discussion regarding Kaz Brekker.

THE HOBBIT #4: Bilbo's Pro Gamer Move

THE HOBBIT #4: Bilbo's Pro Gamer Move

WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS SPOILERS for Chapters 15 - 19.

Brooke and Laura's final Hobbit episode hits the topics of glossed-over major character deaths, the strange and shocking kindness of the Elvenking, and the fact that we only heard a good portion of the battle's events after they had already occurred. (Disappointing if you ask us.)

Also hear why Brooke thinks Bilbo is lowkey a traitor, and Laura's pleasant surprise at his pro gamer move against the dwarves.

THE HOBBIT #3: Poor Urban Planning Leads to Dragon Attack

WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS SPOILERS for Chapters 10 - 14.

Brooke and Laura discuss the ins and outs of the third portion of The Hobbit, including everything from the most articulate dragon we've met thus far, to the necessity of building one's town in a more dragon resistant area. (To each his or her own, but that's what we would do).

This episode also dives into story structure and the particular type of third person perspective used to shape so much of the important storytelling elements of The Hobbit.

THE HOBBIT #2: Gollum Spits Rhymes

WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS SPOILERS for Chapters 5 - 9.

Tune in as Brooke finds out where Mirkwood actually is and once again comes to the realization that there are different kinds of elves, all of which comes as a shock. Even more shocking is just how creepy we find Gollum. Film Gollum has nothing on Book Gollum. Holy cow...

To top things off, we share our $20 million Hobbit adaptation idea. That's our final offer. Take it or leave it.

THE HOBBIT #1: A Quest For Treasure Or Friendship?

THE HOBBIT #1: A Quest For Treasure Or Friendship?

WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS SPOILERS for Chapters 1 - 4.

Things are off to a promising start despite the fact that Brooke has no idea where the story takes place, nor understands that not all elves live in one single tree. Fortunately, fantasy is more Laura's area of expertise so, as always, we can expect wise and thoughtful comments from her, ranging from Tolkien's experience in the war to the question of whether the story is really about a big adventure or just the growing of friendships.

Also, experience an oddly clairvoyant moment in which Brooke and Laura both make a comparison to Dune's Gurney Halleck at the same point in the story. (How did we do that? We don't know.)

We certainly have a bit to say about that...

THE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO #3: The Woodland Army of Sexists

WARNING: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS SPOILERS from Parts IV and V.

Things take a wild turn as Brooke and Laura head into the second half of the first installation in the Chaos Walking trilogy. What's really up with this army we keep hearing of? Is it actually growing, or is it all just a bunch of rumors? How are there so many men just waiting around for the opportunity to join an army? Where are they sprouting up from? We ask, and attempt to answer, these questions and more, as we pass the halfway point in the story.

THE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO #2: Hillbillies and Spaceships
