Is Financial Independence Achievable? (wewillnomad.com)

Although we usually only talk about money in relation to travel (i.e. insurance, budgets, cost of travel, etc) we often get asked how we can afford to travel full time and what it took to get to this point? The truth is that it took us years of planning, lots of hard work, many sacrifices and an ongoing commitment towards a shared passion and goal. Although we are able to sustain our current lifestyle through passive income, we remain incredibly aware and frugal in our spending.

The good news is that accumulating wealth has a lot less to do with how much you earn than most people assume. Reaching financial independence has more to do with your spending than your earning and in this podcast episode we discuss how to get there.

  1. Take Stock
  2. Keep Track
  3. Prioritise
  4. Be Frugal
  5. Save, Save, Save
  6. Maximise Your Income & Create Passive Income
  7. Be Comfortable On The Road Less Travelled
  8. Plan For Change
  9. Review And Readjust
  10. Spend Less After Reaching Your Goal

Ep.50 - Lessons from a Year of Nomad Life

Ep.50 - Lessons from a Year of Nomad Life

In this episode, we look back at  2019, the first calendar year we were fully nomadic and spent travelling across Asia. We visited 8 countries, slept in 50 different beds and took numerous flights, trains, busses and boats during this year! Currently, in stark contrast, we still find ourselves stuck in the worldwide COVID-19 lockdown after almost an entire year, so we enjoy reflecting on our 2019 travels.

  1. Quick summary of our year.
  2. How we choose our next destination and the cool new tool we created to do this (https://www.wewillnomad.com/where-to-travel-next).
  3. How we deal with money and tracking expenses while travelling.
  4. Packing for full-time travel: Items we should have packed but didn't & items we ditched along the way.
  5. Social media and how it influences travel.
  6. Technology and our best travel apps.
  7. Our pace of travel, actual vs preferred.
  8. Keeping fit on the road.
  9. Some First Time Experiences.
  10. What we learnt from our first year as full-time nomads.

Ep.49 - Where To Travel Next in 2021 - How to Find Your Next Travel Destination!

Ep.49 - Where To Travel Next in 2021 - How to Find Your Next Travel Destination!

Are you struggling to find inspiration for your next travel destination? Perhaps it's as simple as finding an affordable holiday nearby where you will have good weather and you do not need a visa to visit?

What is this Where-To-Travel-Next thing? It is the worlds most flexible travel destination search tool

We've gathered tons of information and track data on each destination at country level. You tell us where you're from and we provide your options for visa-free destinations. You filter your options by the current travel advisory levels, preferred region, and you can even exclude destinations which may pose certain major health risks. We have now added estimated flight costs to every destination as well as the option to filter destinations by your preferred travel budget. Our latest addition to the filter is Covid-19 travel restrictions per country - updated weekly. (You will find more info in this blog post.)

The best part of the tool shows once you choose your month of travel as you can then exclude destinations where it is too hot, too cold, too wet or too busy to your liking. Perhaps you're looking for a destination to kite-surf, hike, cycle, ski or even just good beach weather - outside of the main tourist seasons?  Every destination has it's own dedicated country page where you will find loads more information to help you make the best choice.

Our goal is to help you find the perfect destination, to travel the world and have amazing adventures.

Read more on the Where-To-Travel-Next Destination Filter Tool on our webpage: https://www.wewillnomad.com/post/where-to-travel

Ep.48 - Mt. Bromo & Kawah Ijen - Highlights of Java, Indonesia (Budget Travel Guide)

Ep.48 - Mt. Bromo & Kawah Ijen - Highlights of Java, Indonesia (Budget Travel Guide)

Mount Bromo is probably Indonesia’s most famous active volcano and sits at the Eastern end of Java between Surabaya and Yogyakarta. It's part of the Tengger massif and in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

Kawah Ijen. A beast of a volcano, just shy of 3000 meters, will leave you gasping. Not only for air but also for a truly unique experience. It's home to the largest acidic lake in the world measuring only 0.7ph (with battery acid being 1ph!).

Java is only the fourth largest island in Indonesia but contains more than half of the nation’s population and dominates it politically and economically. The capital of Java and of the country is Jakarta (formerly Batavia), which is also Indonesia’s largest city. If you're looking for inspiration on what to see and do in Java, you've come to the right place!

In this episode, we dive deep into how to go about visiting the famous volcanoes of Java:

1. When were we there and for how long;

2. Our reason for going;

3. Highlight or standout experience;

4. Transport around;

5. Challenges;

6. Budget;

7. Overall impression;

Ep.47 - Yogyakarta City, Indonesia (Budget Travel Guide)

Ep.47 - Yogyakarta City, Indonesia (Budget Travel Guide)

We weren’t quite prepared for how much we would love Yogyakarta and somewhat regret spending only a few days there. Nevertheless, we made the most of our time and now have a place we would like to revisit on our return to Indonesia!

Yogyakarta - often called simply ‘Jogja’ (Y’s are pronounced like J’s in Bahasa), shares the name of the capital city of Jakarta yet they could not be more different! Jakarta has over nine million people in its hazy underbelly – interspersed with skyscraper malls and some of the most congested traffic you will find anywhere in the world. While Jogja retains a calmer soul, is culturally rich in ancient Javanese arts and home to less than half a million inhabitants. Yogyakarta today is home to the nation’s most prestigious university, a well-established art & music scene and picturesque landscape.

As Yogyakarta is synonymous with both Prambanan and Borobudur Temples we include our experience and recommendations on both these magnificent temples.

In this episode we discuss:

1. When were we in Yogyakarta and for how long;

2. Prambanan Temple

3. Borobudur Temple

4. Highlight and standout experience;

5. What the weather is like;

6. Food;

7. Must-See & Do ;

8. Transport and getting around;

9. Budget;

10. Overall impression;

Ep.44 - Volunteering (WorkAway) While You Travel - Our First Experience.

In this episode, we talk about our very first volunteering (Workaway) experience. We spent three weeks volunteering our time at an Eco Jungle Camp at the northernmost tip of Borneo. If you’re considering volunteering or a Workaway experience, this discussion might help shed some light on what to expect. We discuss the following aspects:

  • How our opportunity came about and why we considered doing it.
  • Where we volunteered and what our tasks and responsibilities were.
  • Did volunteering turn out as we expected?
  • The good and the bad of our volunteering experience.
  • Is volunteering for you?
  • Would we do it again?

Ep.41 - Travel Fitness vs Travel Fatness

Ep.41 - Travel Fitness vs Travel Fatness

In this episode, we discuss various approaches and techniques to enable you to stay fit while travelling as well as touch on the importance of combining your exercise regime with a good diet. We have been full-time nomads for 2 years now and we share our experiences of what has and what hasn’t worked for us over the past two years.

FITNESS:

Benefits of being fit when you’re on the road.

Being motivated to exercise regularly.

The challenges of a changing environment.

Overall health and well-being while you travel.

Going for a regular run.

Blog post - How to train yourself to run 5kms

Yoga - Use an app like DownDog.

High-intensity training and bodyweight workouts.

Establishing a routine and sticking to it.

Be mindful of bad habits and make better choices.

Wear a fitness tracker to measure progress and monitor routine.

EATING:

Eating well is easy if you have an unlimited budget.

Why your diet is more important than exercising.

Track what you eat to hold yourself accountable and keep you honest.

Should breakfast be the most important meal?

Choosing the right food and avoiding bad habits.

Cut out the obvious culprits such as refined carbohydrate and sugary foods.

Fruit juices and smoothies are really bad.

Avoid alcohol as much as you can.

Don’t miss out of the odd spoil but don’t eat two bad meals in a row.

Keeping a food log using Instagram is fun and will help to keep you accountable.

Ep.40 - ANTARCTICA for 15 months - Interview with Jason Whiting

Ep.40 - ANTARCTICA for 15 months - Interview with Jason Whiting

In this episode, we interview our friend, Jason and ask him all about his experience visiting Antarctica as part of a SANAE overwintering team. Although we hardly stuck to this list we touched on:

Why he went to Antarctica?

Daily routine and practical matters like taking a shower.

Sharing a confined space for 15 months with the same 9 people.

Highs and lows of the experience.

Cooking and eating from a limited selection of ingredients for more than a year.

Why there are no Polar Bears in Antarctica.

What to do to keep yourself entertained.

Does it take a certain type of person to do this?

If you enjoyed listening to Jason’s perspective, why not also check out our other podcasts where we discuss our home town of Cape Town with him:

Want some inspiration for your visit to Seoul, South Korea?

In this episode, we discuss our Top 10 Things to See and Do in SEOUL. With a population of approximately 10 million people, we expected Seoul to be like any other big city - bustling and impersonal. The 5 days that we spent in Seoul went by in a flash and we definitely hope to return to explore more of what this vibrant city has to offer.

Ep.28 - Highlights Of Mauritius (Budget Travel Guide)

Ep.28 - Highlights Of Mauritius (Budget Travel Guide)

Being budget orientated and independent travellers, we set out to dispel the myth that Mauritius consists only of high-end resorts. We spent 19 nights visiting Mauritius over July / August 2017 and found the island to be perfectly suited for self-exploration.

We were based in the south of Mauritius for the most of our stay, but having our own transportation allowed us to also spend a few days circumnavigating the entire island stopping at almost every single beach and tourist attraction to make sure we could give our opinion on all that the island has to offer. Although not a budget destination, we were pleasantly surprised with our overall spending to explore such a magnificent tropical island.

In this episode, we will discuss the many amazing highlights of Mauritius (both the touristy and off the beaten track places) as we explore the entire island starting in the south and circumnavigate the island in a clockwise direction recalling our memories and highlights.

For more information, blogs and videos of our time spent in Mauritius, head over to our website Mauritius page. For more general information and travel tips on how to travel Mauritius DIY style, listen to Episode 27. If you are considering Mauritius as a kite-surfing destination, be sure to listen to Episode 26, which is all about Kite-surfing Mauritius.

Ep.27 - Mauritius: DIY vs Resort (Budget Travel Guide)

Ep.27 - Mauritius: DIY vs Resort (Budget Travel Guide)

 When most people think of Mauritius, fancy all-inclusive resorts and expensive dollar signs will probably come to mind - this was the reason we avoided Mauritius for quite some time.

With it being such an attractive kitesurfing and nearby location to escape the Cape Town winter we decided to give it a go DIY style for 19 nights over July / August 2017. We were so pleasantly surprised that we’ll be sure to do it again! In this episode, we will discuss the following aspects of travelling Mauritius, the associated costs and of course our tips on how to make the most of your stay.

  • How to find the most suitable accommodation
  • Where to stay, the different areas and beaches
  • Getting to and from the airport
  • Getting around the island
  • What to look out for when renting a vehicle
  • Availability and cost of food and groceries
  • General information and travel tips

For more information, blogs and videos of our time spent in Mauritius, head over to our website Mauritius page  If you are considering Mauritius as a kitesurfing destination, be sure to listen to Episode 26, which is all about Kitesurfing Mauritius.

Ep.26 - Mauritius Kitesurfing (Budget Travel Guide)

Ep.26 - Mauritius Kitesurfing (Budget Travel Guide)

When kitesurfers think of Mauritius as a kitesurfing destination, their attention is usually focused on Le Morne, which has gained worldwide recognition as a hot wave riding spot thanks largely to the KSP World Pro Kite Surfing Tour. However, what few kiters realise is that there are also great spots (mainly for lagoon riding) along the East and North coast of Mauritius as well. In this episode we will discuss the following topics relating to kitesurfing in Mauritius:

  • Seasons, wind direction and consistency of wind
  • Best kitesurfing spots around the island
  • Do you need a wetsuit and booties?
  • Kitesurfing schools and taking lessons
  • Should you take my own gear or rent?
  • Resort vs DIY (Listen to Episode 27 for more on how to DIY your Mauritius holiday like we did)
  • Getting around Mauritius with your kite gear
  • Getting to Mauritius
  • Is it an expensive destination

Be sure to check out our blog post on How to Travel with Kitesurfing Gear on wwwwewillnomad.com to see how we got all our gear to Mauritius without it costing us any extra. For more general information on Mauritius, visit our Mauritius page .

Ep.25 - SLOW Travel vs FAST Travel?

Ep.25 - SLOW Travel vs FAST Travel?

FAST Travel or SLOW Travel?

The debate between slow vs. fast travel is one which really boils down to personal choice. Some of us don’t have the opportunity to travel as much as we’d like, so choose to pack our travels full of different stops to optimise our available time. Others choose to linger and immerse themselves in a place,  happily staying for weeks or months before moving on. Going into this conversation we thought we knew exactly where we stood on this matter and yet towards the end we had some interesting insights!

There are advantages and disadvantages to both slow and fast travel, but above all – it’s still all travel. Anyone who decides to walk out of their normal life and pack a suitcase, and go into the world to seek new horizons, whether they do it slow or fast, is a traveller after all.

Ep.19 - Social Media & Travelling - Best Friends Or Worst Enemies?

Ep.19 - Social Media & Travelling - Best Friends Or Worst Enemies?

These days social media is so much a part of our lives, it’s often difficult to imagine life without it. When it comes to travelling, this becomes even more prevalent and one sometimes has to ask the question whether social media contributes positively to our travel experiences or if it detracts from it.

This can be a controversial topic and many people have very strong opinions regarding social media being either positive or negative. In this episode, we discuss the various types of current social media, some of the pros and cons of social media while travelling and some misconceptions with regards to social media.

Our discussion got rather animated at times and we end up diving deep into the benefits and downsides of social media. Feel free to drop us a note and share your thoughts on the topic…

Ep.13 - Our Journey to becoming Nomads

Ep.13 - Our Journey to becoming Nomads

A year and a half after making the decision to sell our belongings and commit to nomadic full time travel, and a year after moving out of our house, we reflect on our personal journey to becoming full time Nomads. We touch on how our previous travel experiences have influenced our future travel plans, how our travel plans have changed and evolved over the years and how they will no doubt continue to change in the years that lie ahead. We discuss travel goals, financial independence, the sustainability of full time travel and how to make that call to pull the trigger and just do it! We reflect on our transition period and how we feel about the whole process and decision... one year later.

Ep.12 - 5 Steps Towards Reaching Your Travel Goals

Ep.12 - 5 Steps Towards Reaching Your Travel Goals

No matter how big or small your travel goals may be, how soon you want to achieve them or how distant in the future they may seem... in this episode we will discuss 5 important steps which we believe can help to make your travel dreams a reality. To help you remember these 5 steps, Lisa came up with the (very cheesy) acronym DR CPR:

  1. Define your travel goal (your where, why and what)
  2. Research (the realities of your goal, budget required, practicalities, timing etc)
  3. Commit to an achievable deadline/date and have this visible to remind you of its importance to you
  4. Prioritise (your spending, time and energy) - perhaps start a travel fund
  5. Re-evaluate regularly to keep yourself on track or adjust your goals accordingly

We hope this episode will inspire you to consciously take the necessary steps to make your travel goal a reality. We also hope that achieving your travel goals and enjoying travel, in general, will bring you as much joy and happiness as it brings to us!

  • DIY vs travel planner or agent

  • Seasons (peak tourist seasons, local festivals etc.)
  • Initial transport cost & time
  • Visa requirements (cost & duration of stay)
  • Destination/activity specific holidays (Kilimanjaro, scuba diving)
  • Type of trip or holiday (beach, city, hiking, adventure, culture)

Ep.5 - Full Time Travel - What We Should Have Packed!

Ep.5 - Full Time Travel - What We Should Have Packed!

After 26 countries and countless holidays with hand-luggage only we thought we knew it all.

However, when we left 2 months ago on our latest trip (of undetermined length this time) we still made a bunch of mistakes in what we brought with us. Of course it's impossible to plan for every single eventuality and if you attempt to travel light you have to accept that certain things are nice to have and if the day comes that you need it, you should just go and buy it.

In this episode we chat about:

Items we packed but have already ditched.

Items that are useful but not a necessity.

Items we should have packed but didn't.
