What Happened To You?

Former Tranmere Rovers, Everton, Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Carlisle United, Northampton Town, Walsall and Scarborough centre-half Derek Mountfield is our guest this time to talk us through his 1985 Focus On interview for Shoot. We hear about his admiration for former coach Colin Harvey, the thrill of playing for his boyhood club Everton during its 1980s heyday, and duelling with some of the most fearsome centre-forwards of the era.

We welcome former Clyde, Chelsea, Everton, Tranmere Rovers, Kilmarnock, Motherwell and Scotland winger Pat Nevin to the podcast to rummage around his 1985 Focus On interview for Shoot! There's plenty of good stuff from Pat, as you might imagine, including taking the mickey out of a previous guest, his 'most memorable' game he never played in, a love of high-diving and how he enjoyed taking possibly the worst penalty ever seen.

Looking back at two Focus On interviews from Shoot magazine this week is former Liverpool striker David Fairclough. His career at Anfield spanned the late 70s and early 80s when the Reds dominated football at home and abroad. We discuss those heady days, winning trophies, scoring vital goals and that 'Supersub' tag, as well as his sometimes difficult relationship with manager Bob Paisley. David also recalls fondly his decision to move to Switzerland, the Detroit music scene and his John Player Special Ford Capri.

We're back after our winter break and our first guest of 2021 is former West Ham United, Everton, Leicester City and England goal poacher Tony Cottee.  The main topic of our chat is Tony's Focus On interview from Shoot magazine in the 85/86 season when the Hammers almost pulled off the improbable job of winning the First Division title. We discuss that season and his strike partnership with Frank McAvennie, being an East End boy, his unfulfilled time with Everton, trophy success at Leicester, soul music, Cockney TV shows and being murdered in an action film with Dave Bautista and Pierce Brosnan.

Arsenal legend Alan Smith is in the hot seat this week to be grilled about his 1983/84 Shoot 'Focus' interview, at which time he was playing for Leicester City. We talk about his route into league football via lowly Alvechurch, partnering Gary Lineker and Ian Wright (and who he thinks was better), Anfield 89 and playing for the formidable George Graham. In more off-the-field chat, we learn of Alan's fondness for the Ford Capri, his admiration for Hilda Ogden, 'dating' Diana Ross and the alternative nickname of Smeggy.

Mark Bright is in the hot seat for this episode as we cover the best bits from his 'Spotlight On' interview from Shoot in 1988/89 and his 'Private Life Of' profile from Match in 1990. The Crystal Palace legend also recalls his tough upbringing in Stoke, working in a factory, having a tough time at Leicester and then forming one of the best strike partnerships in the country with Ian Wright at Selhurst Park. Inevitably, we discuss the 1990 FA Cup semi-final win over Liverpool but also touch upon musical tastes, motoring mishaps and which of the Jackson sisters he'd most like to meet.

Former Coventry City, West Bromwich Albion, Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa, Watford, Crystal Palace, QPR, Cardiff City, Northampton Town and England u-21 striker Garry Thompson is our guest for this episode as we get stuck into two of his Shoot! magazine profiles from around 1981 and 1983. There's all sorts on the agenda here including breaking through with Coventry's young guns, harsh initiation at The Hawthorns, dressing like The Specials and doing business with Jimmy Hill. Garry's on top form so you don't want to miss this.

We finally pinned down former Motherwell, Celtic, Manchester United and Scotland striker Brian McClair for this extended look back at three separate Shoot and Match interviews of his from the 1980s. When 'Choccy' wasn't banging in the goals at Parkhead and Old Trafford, he kept himself (and now us) entertained by providing a steady stream of misinformation in these old player profiles. Hopefully he's given us some straight answers as we discuss - amongst other things - collecting matchboxes, supporting Liechtenstein, meeting Idi Amin and why Alex Ferguson is funnier than you think.

Terry Curran is our guest on What Happened To You? this week as he reminisces about his time delighting the crowds at Doncaster Rovers, Derby County, Nottingham Forest, Southampton, Sheffield Wednesday, Everton, Sheffield United and Huddersfield Town. Terry is on great form as we pick through the best bits of his Shoot! Super Focus interview from around 1981 including what he thought about the likes of Jack Charlton and Brian Clough, spending time with snooker wildman Alex Higgins, and the prospect of taking one of Charlie's Angels out on a date.

Wolverhampton Wanderers legend Kenny Hibbitt joins us this week to talk about his 16-year stint at Molineux through two Shoot! interviews from 1973 and 1983. It was an eventful time at Wolves which included relegations, promotions, two League Cup victories and a UEFA Cup final. Kenny reflects on his achievements and relationship with manager Bill McGarry who, coincidentally, also took charge of Kenny's late older brother Terry - a terrace hero at Newcastle United - whose life is discussed in this episode. We also hear about Kenny's life off the field in the seventies and eighties which covers a love of golf, cricket, Led Zeppelin, The Nolans and American soap opera Falcon Crest.

We're pleased to welcome former Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Portsmouth and Swindon Town midfielder Micky Hazard to the podcast this week to trawl through a Shoot! interview from 1981/82 and a Match profile from 1987/88. Micky relives the glory days at White Hart Lane, particularly his pivotal role in the 1984 UEFA Cup success and playing in possibly Spurs' greatest ever midfield. We also touch upon his controversial move to Chelsea before finding out more about his trademark curly hair, doing the London 'Knowledge', and being a fan of Doris Day.

Former Stoke City, Sunderland, Everton, Newcastle United, Fulham and England midfielder Paul Bracewell is our guest for this episode as we open up the archives on his Shoot interview from 1983-ish and a player profile from an Everton programme in the 1985/86 season. As well as all the usual discussion about cars, music and hobbies in the eighties, we talk about Paul's heyday at Goodison Park, the injury that nearly finished him off, meeting Michael Jackson, and a spot of advice he gave to host Mark thirty years ago.

It's the turn of former Wrexham, Middlesbrough, FC Twente and Tranmere Rovers striker Billy Ashcroft to join us for a rummage through the archives of Shoot! magazine as we discuss his Focus On interview from 1978 or thereabouts. As well as reminiscing about his time in North Wales, Teesside and the Netherlands, where he played against many of the Dutch masters, Billy reveals why he enjoyed Fred Trueman's Indoor League and the films of softcore sensation Sylvia Kristel.

We're back again, this time with former Derby County, Ipswich Town, Chelsea, Notts County and Northern Ireland striker Kevin Wilson to pick the bones out of his 1985/86 'Focus On' interview for Shoot! As much as we enjoyed talking about him banging the goals in for club and country, it was particularly fun to recall a talented dog called Gemma, why he was nicknamed Shoestring, and whether the magazine feature helped sell his house.

Our special guest this time is Heart of Midlothian legend John Colquhoun who joins host Mark to talk about his 'Private Life of...' interview from Match magazine in 1986, the year the Jambos stood on the cusp of immortality only to lose out on the Scottish league and cup double in one heartbreaking week. We dissect that season as well as the rest of his playing career, life as a painter and decorator, teammates' bad driving, indie music, politics and following in the footsteps of Winston Churchill.

We welcome the former Aston Villa, Wolves, Everton, Rangers and Scotland striker Andy Gray to the show this week. The former Sky and now BeIn Sports pundit talks about three separate interviews done for Shoot and Match magazines from around 1977/78 and 1984. Andy laments his dodgy knees, his falling out with Villa boss Ron Saunders, and his Scotland career whilst also celebrating his time at Goodison Park which brought him great success and his best memories as a player. We also discuss Diana Ross, not taking the Everton manager's job, and his resemblance to Freddie Starr.

Joining Mark on What Happened To You? this week is former Ipswich Town, Leicester City, Southampton and England defender Russell Osman. He looks back at his 1981 Shoot! magazine interview which was published soon after the Portman Road club not only won the UEFA Cup, but also narrowly missed out on capturing the League title. Russell reminisces about that season, the part played by Bobby Robson in Ipswich's success and subsequent demise, his admiration for motorcycle star Barry Sheene, and his role in the classic wartime football film, Escape to Victory.

We look back at his Shoot! interview from around 1980 and his Match magazine profile from 1987/88. Topics for discussion include Paul's taste in music, clothes and cars, playing for his boyhood club and alongside his childhood hero, and finally getting his hands on a winners medal under Howard Kendall at Goodison Park.

Not only do we discuss his early life in Bristol, his admiration for older brother Kevin and some of his experiences at White Hart Lane, but we'll also find out about his friendship with Spandau Ballet's Tony Hadley, his favourite film of 1983 and his work with diabetes charities.
