About What The Faith:
What The Faith is a space to embrace the spiritual misfits. In the time of organized religion's mass exodus and the ever-growing post-religion/deconstruction movement, many are finding themselves somewhere in the middle of all the noise. The misfit might be skeptical of religion but they aren’t anti-spirituality. They’re looking for more and most importantly, they’re yearning for dialogue that will help them enter into that reconstruction process, wherever it may lead them.

Neuroscience and The Buddha with Chris Niebauer Ph.D.
Is there truly a science to spirituality? In today's episode we talk with Chris Niebauer all about mediation, the ego and how neuroscience is catching up to what Buddhists have taught for thousands of years.
While in grad school in the early 1990s, Chris began to notice striking parallels between the latest discoveries in psychology, neuroscience, and the teachings of Buddhism, Taoism, and other schools of Eastern thought. When he presented his findings to a professor, his ideas were quickly dismissed as “pure coincidence, nothing more.”
Fast-forward 20 years later and Niebauer is a PhD and a tenured professor, and the Buddhist-neuroscience connection he found as a student is practically its own genre in the bookstore. But according to Niebauer, we are just beginning to understand the link between Eastern philosophy and the latest findings in psychology and neuroscience and what these assimilated ideas mean for the human experience.
Chris earned his Ph.D. in cognitive neuropsychology at the University of Toledo, specializing in the differences between the left and right sides of the human brain. He is currently a professor at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania, where he teaches courses on consciousness, mindfulness, left- and right-brain differences, and artificial intelligence.

PART 1: Physically In, Mentally Out - Why One Jehovah's Witness Elder Is Choosing To Stay (For Now) with Geoffrey Wallis
P.I.M.O. (Physically in, mentally out.) It's a phrase not many outside of the JW organization know but is one that within the Jehovah's Witness community many secretly identify with. Including Geoffrey Wallis.
Geoffrey is an active Jehovah’s Witness who uses his unique position as a critical insider to provide commentary on the social psychology of the organization and raise awareness of how coercion in the group leads to Religious Trauma Syndrome in disillusioned members.
As Wallis puts it in A Voice From Inside, he was “heavily involved in both attending and instructing specialized schools and training programs sponsored by the Watch Tower Society”. Upon disillusionment, he suffered some of the worst symptoms of Religious Trauma PTSD including depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and suicidal ideation. Now in full recovery, Wallis puts his family and community relationships in jeopardy to bring awareness to those suffering from Religious Trauma and the challenges of Physically-In-Mentally-Out (PIMO) Jehovah’s Witnesses who feel trapped by the captive policies of the organization.
On part 1 of our conversation with Geoffrey we dive deep into the doctrinal beliefs of JW's, the history of the organization, JW's beliefs on shunning, Geoffrey's new book and why he, though still an elder, has decided to stay after "waking up".
