This is the final episode of the Jackie Zimmerman summer series!

In this episode, Jackie talks about an elective surgery for a tummy tuck, a new corporate job, breaking up with the shady boyfriend, trauma bonding, marriage, and where her life is now.

Now for an uplifting episode. Jackie starts Girls with Guts with a group of friends who also are IBD patients. She delves into the first retreat, highs and lows, complications, finding her people, immense pride, burnout, and the final surgery.

New surgeon, the last surgery in the J pouch series, recovering, graduating from Grad school, starting Girls With Guts, and finding out that her boyfriend has been less than faithful. Does this finally fracture the relationship and end things? Listen to find out.

TW Suicide

This episode is deeply vulnerable. Jackie was at a low point and actively planning her suicide. There's outreach, friends intervening, getting help, another J pouch surgery, and some body and mind healing. Life starts moving forward, and good things start happening, but all get derailed by more complications.

In this episode, life is on an upswing after leaving Camp Oasis. She has just been fired and cannot get another job because she has many surgeries ahead of her. She throws herself into Grad School to occupy her mind. MS relapse, an unsupportive boyfriend and professors, and a J-pouch surgery that does not go as planned. Then a bottoming out and a contemplation of suicide.

In this episode, Jackie and her parents are preparing for a series of three UC surgeries at the Cleveland Clinic. She shares a ridiculous story of having to prep for colon surgery while sharing a hotel bathroom with her parents and gives details of her exact procedure.

Jackie shares how the surgery did not go as planned, the difficulty with managing pain, feeling the loss of dignity, and how challenging the aftercare was in general. She struggles with her identity and her new life with an ostomy. Finally, she finds Camp Oasis (a camp for children with IBD), where, as a camp counselor, her life is changed forever for the better.

In this episode, it's the end of 2009, and heart surgery is behind Jackie. She is still trying to maintain a full-time job while facing a series of major surgeries, trying to wrap her mind around how much her body was rapidly changing due to meds and illness, and worrying about how to pay the bills. It's important to remember that at this time, Jackie is still only 25 years old. She and her parents try to navigate insurance, contemplate bankruptcy, and having to accept help and generosity from others via a benefit.

In this episode, fresh on the heels of her MS and UC diagnosis, Jackie suddenly faces heart surgery, and a family friend saves her life. During this time, she not only faces her own mortality but can see it in the faces of her friends and family. More boyfriend green flags that are actually red flags, and working a full-time job through it all. New meds, more complications, and is now facing multiple life-altering surgeries.

In this episode, we talk about Jackie finally telling her family about her new diagnosis of IBD, struggling to understand the protocols and implications of UC, many hospitalizations, exploding IVs, and trying to become empowered at a young age to advocate for herself, all while being incredibly ill. Add on top of all of this, navigating the American healthcare system. The episode ends with another health emergency that is not UC or MS.

In this episode, we talk about living with MS, a new boyfriend, highs, lows, a horrible roller coaster road trip, anxiety, and the ominous precursor of IBD.

For this summer series we will be kicking off Disability Pride Month by focusing on the story of Jackie Zimmerman. In 2006 she was diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and in 2009 with UC (Ulcerative Colitis).

She is now a patient advocate who has an captivating story to tell about her journey. She did not do all the right things, nor was she dealt an easy hand when it came to chronic illness and that is what makes her story so compelling.

She delves vulnerably into all the triumphs, the failures, the shame, the empowerment, and everything in between. She shares so much about her public and private battles that you will find it impossible not to be drawn in and inspired.

In part one, we start from the beginning of it all. We delve into Jackie's early life, first symptoms, MS and IBD diagnosis, personal life, terrible boyfriends, and so much more.
