About Our Guest

Brian McAndrews taught visual art at Creative Arts Morgan Village Academy (CAMVA), a performing arts middle and high school located in Camden, New Jersey, for over six years. At CAMVA, Brian taught drawing, painting, art history and digital media. During the summer, he facilitated 2D art for Rutgers Future Scholars, a Rutgers Camden campus program for similarly aged students.

Brian spent time studying at University of the Arts (illustration) as well as numerous county colleges before finishing his painting degree at Rutgers Camden. It was there that he also received his teaching certificate for the state of New Jersey. As an artist, he has shown work at the Stedman Gallery, Student Works Gallery (Rutgers Camden), Mt Holly Arts, and the Nemours Children’s Hospital. His students’ work has been featured in many competitions and galleries, including the Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia.

Brian’s passion for technology, as well as classical techniques, such as drawing, influenced his belief that any person, no matter their believed ability, can learn to create beautiful art!

Sadly, in January of 2022, Brian passed away. He is remembered fondly by his students because of the great impact that he made on their lives as their art teacher and mentor.

This episode is dedicated to the memory of Brian and to all who knew and loved him.

About Our Guest

Ebony L. Ruffin is a native of Los Angeles, CA and earned her B.F.A. in Dance from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and an M.F.A. in Dance and Choreography from CalArts. She worked for nearly two decades in New York as a professional dancer, choreographer, teaching artist, and arts administrator. Ebony also has extensive experience working in K-12 education, with many dance and arts education organizations, including Ailey Arts in Education & Community Programs and Battery Dance Company. As an Arts Administrator, she has also worked in many facets for The Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation and currently works for The Music Center as the Manager of Professional Development in the Education Department.

James 'SoSoon' Gantt is a New York born emcee, producer, lecturer, scholar and Hip-Hop educator. The moniker SoSoon, an acronym for Sound Of Something Out Of Nothing, reflects the heart of Hip-Hop culture which was developed by people who lacked access to outlets for creative expression. SoSoon's music captures the diverse experiences of New York's working class who often play the background despite their significant contributions to “the city that never sleeps.”

Abdul-Qadir Islam is a brotha from Philadelphia on a mission to explore and expand Black Joy in Literacy Education. A career educator, Abdul -Qadir seeks to challenge the ways in which English educators aide in the processess of emotional and physical Literacies with Black males in particular. Through the arts, and in his work at a doctoral student at Teachers College, he hopes to further the continued flexx that is occurring in American Black Culture.

Keisa Parrish is a former Radio City Rockette, classically trained dancer, certified Yoga / Pilates / TRX instructor who holds a BFA from Fordham University and has been teaching for over 22 years. She is a single mom who’s been living in NYC for the past 20 years and Founder of Luebirta and Kaleonani Inc, a performing arts and wellness company.

Priscilla Flores is a Queer, Latinx, New Yorker, actor / writer / director / educator / awakener.

As an "art-vist," I am passionate about community action, marginalized populations, and using performance art to explore social issues, connect bridges, and build networks of healing and collective empowerment. With over 17 years of programmatic and administrative experience in the arts and education field, I am deeply committed to addressing youth and community development through an Applied Theatre approach. In my current position as Director of the College and Adult Program at the CUNY Creative Arts Team, I develop programming for student and adult populations across New York City that allow participants to explore social and academic issues, social and emotional learning, and help build sustainable life skills.

Each year, I work to develop and supervise a highly skilled team of teaching artists who provide interactive, participant-centered applied theater workshops and residencies for a diverse range of contracts and communities, serving approximately 10,000 participants annually.

Krystal Dillard grew up attending public school in Los Angeles, where her family chose to lie about their home address to give her access to a better school. Since earning her Masters degree in Education from Marymount University and Bachelor's in English from Howard University, Krystal has taught in a variety of different school settings—public and private, regional and international—all of which placed special emphasis on literacy, inquiry based education, and democratic approach.

Anthony Smith is a West Philly based organizer, artist and Social Studies teacher. Anthony has been organizing primarily around addressing police violence and building independent political power for black and brown community members through direct action. He has worked with and contributed to organizations such as Philly for REAL Justice, the Black Philly Radical Collective, Friends and Family of Mumia Abu-Jamal, and Food not Bombs Solidarity, who move to make Philly the place black and brown people deserve.

Temesgen Tocruray is a proud Black Man of Eritrean descent living in Brooklyn, NY by way of Dallas, TX. He wears several hats. The 2 most important hats is that of a father of two amazing daughters and a loving partner of a powerful black woman. Other hats include, Actor, Educator/Facilitator . As an actor he has performed on stages and screens all over NYC, the tri-state area, the continental US and Africa. As an educator/facilitator, he has spent the last decade using a unique blend of artistic and facilitation skills to explore social issues, build and further soft and hard skills, and challenge systems of oppressions with a diverse population of students of all grade levels, college students, justice involved folks, teachers and corporations. Temesgen is a graduate of Texas Southern University.

Jordan Harrison is a professional speaker, educational consultant and international youth development specialist born in Chicago, IL. Most importantly, he is a disruptor to make a difference. He lives mission driven life focuses on radical imagination and eradicating inequality with the constant reminder of our collective humanity.

His work has allowed him to speak to over 150,000 people on anti-racism, equity, inclusion, and how to build people and institutions on equity. He currently is the Vice President of Community Impact and partnerships for Reality Changers where he has worked with over 5,000 8th-12th grade first-generation, low-income college-bound students in San Diego.  In addition, he is also the president of the alumni association of the Student African American Brotherhood, a program to increase the number of Black males graduating from college. He works with students, educators and professionals to provide solutions to one question, “How do we create environments where every person can succeed, no matter where they come from.”

Harrison is committed to the challenging work of changing systems that perpetuate inequities. His work recently earned him a full ride fellowship to Harvard University where he earned his Master's in Education in 2018. Harrison continues his work in transforming lives, communities and the world with the message to encourage others to have the audacity to dream and the discipline to achieve.

Jerry Freedman has been a teacher for over 60 years. He was named "Teacher of the Year" by Los Angeles County, and has won many accolades including the L.A. Dodger "Education Hero" award, a Certificate of Recognition from the California State Senate and Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, as well as from the United States Congress. One of L.A.’s “Most Inspirational Teacher” award winners, presented by the Mayor of Los Angeles, Jerry was also the recipient of the Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction Award, presented by Mr. Nobel personally.

Lyndsey Schlax, co-founder of Schools Before Bars, is a school leader, teacher, and community organizer. A graduate of UC Berkeley's Principal Leadership Institute and founder of the national grassroots organization Teachers Take Action, Lyndsey has spent more than 20 years working in schools to increase student voice & civic engagement, coach teachers & schools towards equity, and empower communities to heal through history and collective action.

Ruchira Shah co-founded "Schools Before Bars" in response to the Covid-19 pandemic to advocate for government funding to support education.

In addition to founding Schools Before Bars, Ruchi has a decade of experience working in the climate and clean energy sphere. Ruchi has an MSc in Social Policy from the London School of Economics and a BA in Drama from Northwestern University. She is the parent to two girls: a four-year-old and a seven-year-old. In a previous life, Ruchi was a struggling actor in Los Angeles.

Schools Before Bars was a grassroots movement formed in response to the Covid-19 pandemic to advocate for government funding for education. Schools Before Bars is calling for:

1. Government support to create conditions in which schools can safely reopen

2. Funding to enable all children to receive an equitable and high quality education (whether in person or remote)

3. Funding to enable the needs of working parents for childcare

Niema Golphin is an author and certified meditation guide who was born in Philadelphia and educated at Azusa Pacific University in southern california. After teaching and leading in education for over 15 years Niema has now expanded to bringing mindfulness meditation not only to educators but other fields that vield high stress. Niema has had the privilege of inspiring children and families with two self-published books, and traveled speaking to thousands of teens about her personal story of trauma and healing.

WHBLE founder, Ah-Keisha McCants speaks with Claremont Graduate University, PhD Candidate Kenya Marshall-Harper about the power of relationship-building in schools, leveraging the needs and assets of students and families, the problematic role of productivity in schools, and the importance of the talent development of underserved youth, including Black women and girls, and teachers.

Kenya R. Marshall-Harper is a PhD candidate in education at Claremont Graduate University.  Her research interests include K-12 education, early preparation of gifted and talented students, and underserved populations.  As a secondary English and English Language teacher, she has worked with diverse students for over 14 years.  She has received national and international awards including the Tae Han Kim Award and the Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Award for high achievement. She has presented at numerous conferences on the talent development of notable individuals including successful women of color.  Her dissertation focuses on the talent development and productivity of African-American female faculty.

Healing for Liberation pt. 2

Applying Theatre pt. 2

WHBLE founder, Ah-Keisha McCants talks with Applied Theatre educator, Ashleigh Bragg about the role of storytelling, embodying nature, health education, and BIPOC & LGBTQ youth representation as liberation within schools.

Ashleigh Estelle Bragg is originally from the West Coast, grew up in Southern California and later in Portland, Oregon where her family of origin currently resides. Ashleigh is an actor-teacher living in New York City for CUNY Creative Arts Team where she serves black and brown students in low income communities at four different high schools in both the Bronx and Brooklyn. She was the MA Graduate Apprenticeship for Diversity in Applied Theatre with the College Adult Program with the Creative Arts Team in New York City.

Ashleigh has a BS in Theatre Performance from Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon, and received an acting apprenticeship with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for three seasons. She was classically trained in Acting and Theatre Performance at the Pacific Conservatory of Performing Arts School in Santa Maria, California. Through Afrocentric styles of playwriting, storytelling and eco-leadership, she has collaborated with classroom teachers and students with the goal of improving community through racial justice, diversity, inclusion and equity training. She has facilitated students in middle school, high school, college, English Language Learners, LGBTQ communities, rural areas, immigrant populations, and challenging populations in correctional facilities such as Rikers Island with inmates.

She believes the use of Applied Theatre will continue to aid in liberation if we ground our young people in celebrating our roots and where we come from. Through daily actions of compassion and a clear vision of who we are and we are going, we become less fearful of being free.

Applying Theatre pt. 1

WHBLE founder, Ah-Keisha McCants talks with Playwright and Theatre educator, Jarrett McCreary about the role of engaging in critical thinking, and affirmation of the identities, experiences and voices of BIPOC & LGBTQ students using theatre.

Jarrett McCreary is a writer and educator in the Philadelphia area. Artistically, he is a rising playwright which has included finishing the Interact Core Playwright Fellowship in 2019 and having his work professionally produced by The Neighborhood Theater Group in Chicago.  Educationally, Jarrett has spent years as a Theater Teaching Artist, teaching at various Philadelphia schools. Currently, he is a Program Specialist at the Attic Youth Center, and is dedicated to using his skills to empower black and brown LGBTQ youth in the city.

Decolonizing Education pt. 2

WHBLE founder, Ah-Keisha McCants talks with playwright, stage director, performance artist, documentary filmmaker, educator, and activist Dr. H. "Herukhuti" Sharif Williams about what he calls, “Erotic epistemology” as well as transformative and revolutionary practices and the power of embodied learning techniques and liberatory traditions in decolonizing education.

H. "Herukhuti" Sharif Williams is a playwright, stage director, performance artist, documentary filmmaker, educator, and activist. His work has been performed at the Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, New York International Fringe Theatre Festival, and The Village of Arts and Humanities. He is the founder and chief erotics officer of the Center for Culture, Sexuality, and Spirituality, a social enterprise committed to Black liberation through erotic empowerment. He is a professor of interdisciplinary studies, decolonial sexuality, and socially engaged arts at Goddard College and adjunct associate professor of applied theatre research at the City University of New York, School of Professional Studies. His current projects include "No Homo | No Hetero," a documentary film about Black bisexual men, "Telling Our Stories," a documentary film about racism and racial justice activism at Goddard College, and In the Vally of Coming Forth, an Afrofuturist, post-apocalyptic play about destroying white supremacy.

Decolonizing Education pt. 1

WHBLE founder, Ah-Keisha McCants talks with Teacher, Founder and CEO of The Lesesne Collective Corp d/b/a Sisters in Education Circle (SIEC) and the SIEC Retreat Host, Dr. Akosua Lesesne about the Black teaching tradition and education for Black liberation.

Akosua Lesesne, is an educational design leader with expertise in education for Black liberation, grades 6-12 and the Black teaching tradition. She began her career as a high school social studies instructor and has 17 years of teaching, instructional coaching and district level leadership experience within five major, predominantly Black and Latinx urban school districts along the east coast. Akosua was one of the chief architects of a flagship district wide Black male mentoring program with Broward County Public Schools, served on the grant writing team that won the district a $5 million High School Graduation Initiative grant from the United States Department of Education to expand this program, and oversaw the expansion of this program model throughout the district. Her work defending and inspiring our most vulnerable youth has earned her praise from students, parents, colleagues and renowned educational scholars alike. In her latest book, McArthur “Genius” Award-winning educator and renowned author, Lisa Delpit ,wrote this about Lesesne’s impact, “Your tireless efforts to give our children brighter futures is exhausting to watch, but so inspires me to continue the struggle.” In addition to founding and leading Lesesne Learning, Akosua is the Founder and CEO of The Lesesne Collective Corp d/b/a Sisters in Education Circle (SIEC) and the SIEC Retreat Host. She earned a Bachelor’s degree, cum laude, from Harvard University, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Tufts University, and Doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education.
