Where did you see God?

Where did you see God?

By Paul Granger
God wants us to share our stories.

When He speaks and works, He doesn't want us to simply keep it to ourselves; when we share what God has done, those around us are comforted, or encouraged, or challenged.

This podcast creates a space for the incredible content and stories God is creating, shared through your voice. We'll also dive deeper into what God is saying and doing, explore scripture, and discern how we can grow in hearing and seeing God.

Healing: Faith vs. Science?
In episode 83, Dr. Romesh Wijesooriya makes space in his exceptionally packed workload to process something that has come up in several episodes: the tension between faith and science.  As both a doctor and committed believer, he has to navigate that tension more intensely that many of us, and it can be difficult.  Together, we press into what it means to have faith, how God might creatively bring healing, and how we can be praying for those on the frontlines of providing physical care. Do faith and science actually have to be at odds with each other? How has God brought you healing through practical means? Romesh invites you to pray for strength and patience for health care professionals. ~ Check out our website: www.WhereDidYouSeeGod.com  ~ Want a free resource?  Check out "A Journey through Revelation (for the person that doesn't want to read Revelation)": https://www.wheredidyouseegod.com/a-journey-through-revelation ~ We now have apparel for you to wear as an amazing conversation-starter!  https://www.bonfire.com/store/where-did-you-see-god/ ~ Have a story? Healing: Shame and Blame
In episode 82, we address shame and blame.  After all, several episodes this season have encouraged vulnerability with others, but what happens when your openness isn't received well?  What do you do if the other person blames you for your trauma?  When Sharon Hughes was a teenager, she found herself in a frightening situation that later led to her best-selling book, "The Girl In The Garage: 3 Steps to Letting Go Of Your Past."  After this traumatic event, she found her pain met with comments like, "Well, you shouldn't have been at that party."  Now, Sharon can recognize how unhelpful -- and unloving -- blame can be; however, she recognizes that we and the Church as a whole still struggle with knowing what Truth and Love are, and how to find the balance of each in our interactions. How have you experienced "the wisdom of God"? Healing: Sharing our story
In episode 81, I get to talk to longtime-friend-from-youth Zac Stein.  The reason I'm grateful for this conversation is that this episode was actually Zac taking a step of obedience and faith in response to God's invitation for him to share his experiences.  The problem is, Zac has been through some hard things -- many of which he may be healing from for the rest of his life -- and to share could invite harsh criticism.  What Zac knows, though, is that God's invitation for healing extends beyond him getting "fixed", and even beyond himself period, to something greater. Bonus: You get to hear the track that's been flowing behind all these episodes, and why it's relevant. How might God be inviting you to share your story? Healing: Loss of a loved one
In episode 80, we explore how healing can be found in the midst of something as permanent as death.  For all her life, Genesis' father was her best friend, so when he suddenly became paralyzed, she was crushed.  She and her mother prayed intensely for healing, and when he passed sooner than expected, she was at a loss for what to think about God.  Yet in the midst, she didn't lose Him. Healing: Rejection
In episode 79, we press into the difficult space of rejection.  Rejection hits us in a uniquely hard way, because it not only leads to loss and isolation, but can cause us to question our identity and value.  Kelli Calabrese opens up about her experience of rejection through a difficult divorce; however, we learn that in the midst, she discovered that the God who created her will never reject her. Healing: Harmed by those meant to heal
In episode 78, Amy brings about a uniquely challenging topic.  All season, we've explored different ways to find healing; what do you do when the thing meant to heal you actually causes harm?  Amy had sought support from a Christian Counselor who was also an elder at her church, and over the course of a year experienced that hardest season of her life due to "therapist abuse".  Perhaps you've never heard of this phrase, but there are many who have experienced abuse at the hands of individuals positioned to provide care.  Amy's story is powerful, and may encourage you as well How has God met you when you've been harmed by those meant to heal? Healing: Staying at the table
In episode 77, God shakes things up.  In a lot of ways, this episode is like most of the others: someone shares about a wound or trauma, and what healing looks like in the midst.  It's pretty easy for anyone to listen to a previous episode and appreciate and honor the guest's experience; this may not be the case for Ebony Walden.  What Ebony shares hits on a topic that many want to avoid, or may grow angry about. I knew this going into the recording; what I didn't know is that God would shift the theme from what He first brought to my mind, to the important act of "staying at the table".  In fact, He ended up turning the entire episode into an opportunity for some to practice it. Some of the greatest opportunities for healing are missed because we refuse to sit; it doesn't have to be that way. Have you ever experienced healing from someone "staying at the table"? Healing: Counseling
In episode 74, "ya boy Troy" talks about counseling.  For most of his life, counseling wasn't an option; stigmas hit on multiple fronts, telling him "men need to be tough" and "real Christians don't need counseling."  Then a rough work situation hit in 2017 -- and echoed in 2020 -- to make him think, "...maybe God wants me to check out counseling..."  That step of obedience ended up blessing him more than he expected. Healing: Stress and gratitude
In episode 72, Phil Barth helps us tap into an area of healing that we don't take seriously: stress.  You may not have a disease or brain tumor, but all of us deal with stress.  Phil didn't take it seriously, which is why he one day in 2015 he found himself in the cardiac wing after having a heart attack.  One thing the doctor said to him stood out: "You need to lower your stress." That's just what Phil did.  For the last 6 years he has been sharing a daily list, "Great things that happened today".  This simple act has had a profound impact on him not just physically, but spiritually as well; and it's an act that is accessible to you, today. Healing: "We are all in recovery"

Healing: Identity
In episode 67, we hear the story of Barby Ingle, who KNEW she was meant to be a cheerleader.  She trained and performed cheerleading, dance and gymnastics starting at age 4 through college, and straight out of college started her own cheer & dance training company.  She was living her dream... until a car accident left her with a rare disease and years filled with misdiagnoses, disability, and the loss of nearly everything. What she came to learn is what God really wanted her to lose was her false understanding of her identity.  As she came to trust Him, she discovered her true identity, and that disability hadn't actually robbed her of the chance to be a cheerleader: it created an opportunity for abundantly more than she could ask or imagine. Healing: Silence
In episode 66, Rich Lewis helps us explore the valuable practice of Centering Prayer, or meeting God in silence.  In 2014 Rich learned about this practice, and in the 7 years since he has not only found himself transformed into a different person, but discovered opportunities that he had not asked for or imagined.  Rich shares that this simple, accessible act can be a powerful step in the journey towards healing, sometimes in ways we didn't know we needed. Healing: Unforgiveness
In episode 65, Andrena helps us press into an area of healing we want to avoid: unforgiveness.  While we can feel like we want God to heal us from the wounds inflicted by others, He may see a more important healing that will cost us more than we are willing to give.  What if that healing is actually abundantly more than we could ask or imagine, and the wounds we are fretting are but "light and momentary troubles"? Healing: "Was blind but now I see"
In episode 64, we continue our series focused on "healing."  Michaela was another unexpected connection through PodMatch, and all I knew of her story was that she had a "lifelong struggle with legal blindness."  In fact, she was born completely blind, leaving doctors at a loss for why or what to do.  Then, at 7 months old, she was miraculously healed, even though she continues to journey with legal blindness.  Having been too young to remember this event, and having only ever known blindness, her experience is different than someone who had an unexpected issue that was totally healed; and her story is immensely valuable to us more fully understanding what God is revealing about "healing." How can we learn to trust God when our experience is limited? Healing: "The upside of suffering"
In episode 63, we continue our series focused on "healing."  As powerful as miraculous healing stories are, I knew it was important to also capture stories of when healing didn't happen; God must have known that too, because He made my podcast the first to pop up when Darci used a podcast matching site for guest spots.  Darci Steiner, MS, is the author of "Beauty Beyond the Thorns: Discovering Gifts in Suffering", and when she messaged me about sharing, I knew immediately that it was going to be a good episode, even while knowing very little about her. She has experienced miraculous healing and the lack thereof, and has learned that she grew closer to God in both.  In fact, one thing she shared after we recorded was this (paraphrased): "I still have hard days, and there are still things I wish I could do... but I know that I have been closest to God when I'm in the midst of suffering... as much as there are things I want to do, I don't want to lose that." If you are suffering in any way, or if you've felt like God has refused to heal you, I really believe there is something in this episode for you.  Also listen for the moment God shows off with a timely verse. The Questioning Series Finale
In episode 61, Josh Mozug and I process not just this season, but the broader topic of how the Church engages "questioning" and the invitation God may be giving us. The fact this season even exists points to the reality that many people are wrestling with hard questions, and struggling to find a healthy, loving space to process that within the Church.  If we are serious about living out the mandate to "love others", this just can't be. In episode 57 we're joined by Megan and Sherika, who host "The In-Between Podcast."  There podcast is based on the concept of "the in-between" and "the Saturday," which represent that space between the crucifixion on Friday and the resurrection on Sunday.  Maybe you've experienced the Saturday yourself; you know God has done a big work in your life, but instead of the transformation you expected you are immersed in trial. What do we do when we find ourselves in-between where we were and where we want to be?  How do we understand and trust God when it seems he's abandoned us in a pit?  How can the Church grow in navigating these all-too-common spaces? Knock and the door will be opened to you... but my knuckles are bloodied... // Questioning mini-series
Episode 55 is part four of a mini-series: I opened the podcast "for dialogue with folks that may be concerned/confused by Christianity, who may have been wounded by it, or who simply don’t know what to think about God right now." Antonio has been a part of a ministry since he was 5; first as a participant, and now as staff.  At the age of 8 he had an experience that rocked his understanding of God and introduced him to the concept of "silence."  In the decades since, he has felt that he has been standing at the door, knocking, and knocking, and knocking, with no answer.  In the midst of a painful season, he still wonders, "will God answer?" Advent 2020: Where are "hope, joy, peace, and love" in a year like 2020?
Episode 54 is an unplanned Advent episode. I had the opportunity to share to Advent messages -- one at a Zoom gathering with participants from around the world, and one for the local YWAM base -- and found myself spending a significant amount of time processing the themes of "hope, joy, peace, and love." The question that came to my mind was, "What do those look like in a year like 2020?  How are we engaging those themes?  What might we be missing?" The answer: we may be missing the gift of Advent. When the Church won't hear you // Questioning mini-series
Episode 53 is part three of a mini-series: I opened the podcast "for dialogue with folks that may be concerned/confused by Christianity, who may have been wounded by it, or who simply don’t know what to think about God right now." Luke's church experience seemed normal to him; when he began meeting other Christians, he realized just how unhealthy his experiences had been.  This -- along with his personal exploration of Christianity -- began to raise in him questions of the validity of Christianity and the God it speaks of.   Now identifying as an agnostic-atheist, Luke continues to process his understanding of life and spirituality; because of his desire for no one to have the negative experiences he did, he is creating spaces to ensure others who are questioning can do so in a way that they are seen, heard, and loved. The question this raised for me: why did the church -- uniquely designed for such a task -- vacate that space? If you have had negative experiences with churches or Christians, or are wrestling with questions around the validity of Christianity, we hope this episode is encouraging. ~ A special shoutout to Josh Mozug -- who has been in two previous episodes --  who shared my original post, which led to several episodes. ~ Check out our website: www.WhereDidYouSeeGod.com ~ Have a story? When the church wounds you // Questioning mini-series
Episode 52 is part two of a mini-series: I opened the podcast "for dialogue with folks that may be concerned/confused by Christianity, who may have been wounded by it, or who simply don’t know what to think about God right now." Aaron hosts a podcast himself -- "Through the mirror" -- where he and two friends process a number of deep ideas, particularly around faith.  What makes their podcast unique is that all three grew up engaging in the church, and all three have stepped away from that space; one identifies as an atheist, one as a pagan, and Aaron still identifies as a Christian, but is in a deep season of deconstructing his faith.  While the wounds Aaron experienced from the church could have led him to "burn it all down", he instead has remained at the table, believing that God wants something better for us. If you've been wounded by the church or by Christians, we hope this episode encourages you, because your story matters, and there is hope. ~ You can hear Aaron's podcast, "Through the mirror", on any podcast provider or here: https://anchor.fm/throughthemirror ~ A special shoutout to Josh Mozug -- who has been in two previous episodes --  who shared my original post, which led to several potential episodes. ~ Check out our website: www.WhereDidYouSeeGod.com ~ Have a story? Episode 51 is part one of a mini-series: I opened the podcast "for dialogue with folks that may be concerned/confused by Christianity, who may have been wounded by it, or who simply don’t know what to think about God right now." Several people expressed interest, including Joey.  When I pressed record, I didn't know Joey, and Joey didn't know me, but we were both open to seeing where the conversation went.  Joey spent much of his life authentically engaging Christianity, but when doubt hit him unexpectedly, he entered a season of wrestling with who God is, and what that meant from him.  He now considers himself an atheist, and when he dropped that nugget well into the episode, he added with a smile, "So am I the first on the podcast?" This was a fun and valuable episode to record, and I hope you're encouraged no matter what you believe about God. ~ A special shoutout to Josh Mozug -- who has been in two previous episodes --  who shared my original post, which led to several potential episodes. ~ Check out our website: www.WhereDidYouSeeGod.com ~ Have a story? How do we know it's God we are hearing?
Episode 50 -- the unexpected Season 3 finale -- ended up being an episode I've wanted to record for years, but not in this way.  Throughout the course of this podcast, I find myself wrestling often with one question: "How do we know it's God we are hearing?"  All around us we have voices saying, "God said this," and "No, God said that," or "This is what God wants," and often these voices conflict.  Who's right?  Are any of them right?  How do we discern. I was 100% opposed to doing this episode solo, but God gave a nudge, and I've learned to trust Him.  In addition to exploring this question, there are apologies, there's advice, and there's hope. Let's keep learning to recognize His voice, together. This season finale precedes Season 4, "The Questioning mini-series."  This is a powerful season that makes way for questions we don't like to ask and don't like to answer, trusting that God can take it, and abundantly more may be waiting for us on the other side. ~ A special shoutout to Micalah, who God nudged to give me some timely and valuable words as I prepared this podcast, and to Dr. Brock and Althea as well, for their encouraging words. ~ Check out our website: www.WhereDidYouSeeGod.com ~ Have a story? How God confronted my understanding of "Race"
In Episode 43, I followed a nudge from God to get vulnerable on the topic of "Race".  After the death of Ahmaud Arbery -- and the resulting divisive national dialogue -- I did a hefty amount of processing and reflection.  I recorded this episode with trepidation, knowing all the potential pitfalls, but with a faith that God could work through -- or even in spite of -- my words and limited understanding. From inmate to ambassador: becoming a new creation
In episode 27, I had the privilege of hearing the story of my friend Gerard.  There are parts of his story that are hard for him to tell, and yet he knows that God is redeeming the parts of his life that he thought pushed him the furthest from God.  God was with him from start to finish, using his story to not only make him a new creation, but an Ambassador of Christ in a beautiful and powerful way. And He can do the same for you. Have a story? Meeting God in the midst of a struggling marriage
In episode 26, we hear from Bobby and Brenda Vickers, who just celebrated their 40th anniversary.  There's a lot of love between these two, but they get honest that there were many moments in their marriage that seemed hard and hopeless. And it was through their marriage that they met God in powerful ways.  It was through their marriage -- specifically those painful years -- that God did abundantly more than they could have ever expected. Whether you are married or single, there is a powerful message of the love God is calling us to in this episode; and if you are married, there is a challenge to get real with God about your experience.   Have a story? Becca’s “unemployment” story
In episode 25, we hear from Paul's wife Becca, who has been behind the scenes in everything you've heard over the last 24 episodes; but as Paul's stories were being written, her own story was being written and intertwined with his.  We talk about how we often failed to honor each other's stories over our own, and how God was patient with us, bringing us to the place where our stories converged with a crazy family decision. How do you see God when you feel "unspiritual"?
In episode 24, we hear from Roger Hershberger, who has been serving with YWAM for decades.  We explore the idea of those spaces where we believe the Spirit can't work: when we feel we don't have the capacity, it's not the right people, or it's not the right space.  The truth is, the Spirit can work wherever, and through whomever, He wants! A Movement of God in Virginia Beach
In episode 21, we hear the stories of Chris and Fauger, two men who didn't know each other, but who God brought together in an unexpected way, to engage a movement He began many years prior through dreams and prophetic words, connecting people from around the world; through a random RV, visions, and not one, but two statues of Neptune... This week marks the official start of the Virginia Beach location of YWAM Virginia, and God has made it clear He has something in store. As you listen, be in prayer for the family and friends of those lost during the mass shooting on 5/31/2019.  If you are located in Virginia Beach, YWAM staff are making themselves available all week to pray for you at an outdoor prayer station (learn where at www.facebook.com/YWAMVB) Learn more about YWAM, and how you can join in the movement, at YWAMVA.org   Have a story? Knowing who you are and whose you are

"The unemployment story" (or how God called me into foolishness)
Underlying all of the previous 15 episodes has been the story of my unemployment, which I've only shared in snippets to this point.  For the last couple months I've tried to sit and record; it took 4 attempts to finally get it out. Sharing it now brings trepidation, for many reasons, but I can't shake the sense there is something God is trying to do in the telling. But do not be fooled: this is not the story of me getting a job. This is the story of God working in ways I never expected, of Him calling me to things the world would call foolish, of my dying to self over and over, and of God showing just how in control, and wise, and loving He is. This is the story of how silly our stories are, and how incredible God's are.  If you’d like to join me in a movement of God, click here: https://mailchi.mp/4b8a14d90ce0/exciting-news-for-both-of-us Have a story? “He met me in my mess to give me a message”
In the years that I've been friends with Tennicia, I have watched her persevere from hard situation to hard situation.  As a single mother of four, every day demands more from her than she may feel she can offer, but on 11/8 she began a journey of faith that showed her, not just what God could do in her life, but what He could move in her soul. Tennicia's story is powerful, and while the enemy tried to stop it, she believes God wanted her to share it because someone needs to hear it.  Let us know if you were that someone!   Have a story? Advent -- a light in the darkness
I woke up this morning, checked out the verse of the day, and felt a nudge to record an advent episode.    Advent calls us to HOPE.  To PEACE.  To LOVE.  To JOY. In this season, God is giving us stories to tell; those stories have the power to transform us, astonish others, and show that God truly is "God with us."  Have a story? Unity in the pit
In this episode, we hear stories from Garland and Murray on how they met God in the midst of "the pit". You know the pit: those seasons when you feel like you've fallen into a deep place from which you can't climb, where you feel hurt and forgotten. Not only does God meet us in the pit, but He uses what may have been "intended for evil" for good, as the shared sufferings of the Body become our secret weapon against the enemy. By sharing their stories, Garland and Murray are helping us to resist and stand. Note: in an old clip, I say "excavation", and meant to say "erosion". Have a story? In this episode, I continue the story of how God called me to pursue a house, but never promised to give us the house; in fact, it was clearly impossible, and there was nothing I could do to change it. However, God wasn't done telling the story; working through Mary Thompson, Daniel Payne, our real estate agent Alison McCabe, and many others, God showed that He was God, He was good, and He could do the impossible.
