Who Cares if You Listen?

Just a brief update on some garbage audio to let you know where I've been for two years, and to express my desire to get back into it.

This is a side project I'm working on with Dr. James Deaville, musicologist and my old professor at Carleton University. We're look at B-list and made C- and D-list classical composers that you might have never heard of!

In this episode, we tease apart the premise, and I test out using a piece of Paul Dukas to see how seamlessly I can add music into an episode.

Jasper is an engineer with the Federal Bridge Corporation, and a father of two. We went to high school together. I was intensely curious about his involvement with the Green Party of Canada, as well as his beekeeping. He also does other cool stuff too. Give it a listen!

I sit down in my basement after a four month hiatus and contemplate the nature of life and the future of my podcast.

John Hemingway is one my oldest squash rivals. Off the court I consider him a good friend. He's a civil servant by day, but by night he has been known to do woodcarving and woodturning. We've talked in passing about his craft before, but I really wanted to do a deep dive into it. We also discussed his connection to Letterkenny, Rugby, and snowshoeing. We did not discuss Ernest Hemingway, of whom I'm told he is no relation. This was a fun episode to record.

Back with another solo episode, I talk about the perils of getting guests, my short fuse, and also why me sitting in my basement complaining about banks and phone companies hasn't produced real change...yet.

Dawn is a stand-up comic, a writer, an improvisor, an actress, and much much more. We talked about the local arts scene in Ottawa, the dearth of women of colour in the comedy circuit, and how that  may be changing. But most exciting for me, we talked about the ways in which we create and stay connected in COVID times, which is not always an easy feat. 

Due to a host of logistical issues, I didn't have a guest lined up for this week, but I decided to record anyway. I talked about the challenges of finding someone I wanted to talk to, some new projects that I'm working on in the podcast sphere, and some books that I've been reading that I think would be of interest to others.

Stef and I went to high school together. He lives in Toronto, and does some kind of business thing that requires an MBA. I wasn't quite able to discern what it was, except that it's a teaching role. I think you need to reach OT7 to decipher what a "consultant" is.

Caryma is a lawyer, comedy impresario, and satirist. She went to law school with me. She enjoys pro wrestling, and I believe she has a cat named Zuko. I honestly only remembered that after I published this episode, and I'm mortified that I didn't talk about Avatar at all in that hour+ podcast.

Former Provincial and Federal Cabinet minister, my old squash partner at the RA Centre, and IG influencer Tony Clement. Every that could possibly have gone wrong with uploading the podcast did. I sound like I'm phoning into my own show from a port-a-john, but I think that the content more than makes up for it.

We talked about The Grand Tour, fatherhood, the philosophical debates of Causality, and vomit. We drank Nita Brewery's Cronk style beer while doing so, but you can't see it because I don't save video.

Jon hosts "Watch Rewatch" together with Sean Sweeney on FB Live.  I've known him since Kindergarten. Each one of these is a learning process where hopefully the audio (and eventually the video) mature as I do along this path.
