A conversation with a Warrior: A brief history of the US Army Special Forces with 1SG(R) Justin Crawford
We are back Nerds!! Sorry for the break, I was not in any headspace to record. However, that is in the rearview and I am coming at you with a great conversation with a very special guest. 1SG(R) Justin Crawford spent over 20 years serving the nation in the Army. 15 of those years were spent as a soldier in the elite units of Special Forces. During our chat Justin and I will talk about the history of Special Forces, the process to become one, and if Hollywood gets it right when depicting these soldiers. This is a long one... so grab some drinks, buckle in and enjoy my conversation with a warrior and American Hero. Cheers. It is getting hot! - A brief history about the Air Conditioner
We are in the throws of the summer heat and thanks to some creative thinking in the early 20th century we don't have to just suffer through it. I am on the road for work and happen to be in Texas, in August, so this episode was timed perfectly! But Air Conditioning did much more than just cool the businesses and homes across America, it changes the culture and landscape of many regions throughout the nation. The War of 1812 - America's Most Forgotten War
On this episode of Why Whiskey I am solo and drinking scotch! I also take a break from the booze to talk about the War of 1812 or the second war with England. I discuss what caused it, where it happened, how it happened, and who won... if there was a winner. This war was the conflict that saw the US get invaded and our nation's Capitol burned to the ground. It also inspired the writing of our national anthem. Come join me as I drink Balvenie and Lagavulin 16 and chat about a lesser-known fight. Cheers. A brief history on the Star Spangled Banner
On this EP of Why Whiskey, I am solo and talking about the National Anthem of the United States of America. Written by Francis Scott Key in 1814, while on a British naval vessel, Key would witness the bombing of Fort McHenry and the beautiful flag that was waving over the fort despite the incredible firepower that was raining down on it. Since that time, the poem turned song had a bumpy ride through the country until being accepted officially as the National Anthem in 1931. Join me and sip some whiskey as we explore the song The Star-Spangled Banner.  Sources: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/wheres-debate-francis-scott-keys-slave-holding-legacy-180959550/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_historical_national_anthems https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/francis-scott-key-the-reluctant-patriot-180937178/ https://www.history.com/topics/19th-century/the-star-spangled-banner https://www.jstor.org/stable/40067621 https://www.jstor.org/stable/273347 https://www.jstor.org/stable/29781735

Operation Paperclip with Jesse
BUCKLE IN FOLKS! THIS IS A LONG ONE! On this episode of Why Whiskey I am joined by my local tin hat manufacturer Jesse as we explore another government conspiracy. This one is much more fact than conspiracy though and reads like a science fiction novel. In the last days of World War II, the US and its allies made drastic moves to locate and secure German Tech, science, and the scientists responsible. The Cold War warm-up was happening and the US was 20 years behind the curve. The Project called Overcast would evolve into OP Paperclip and would lead to the hiring of Nazi scientists for government programs. In a story with so many twists and turns, we are drinking some strong booze this evening. Weller Full Proof, Nikka from the Barrel, and Lismore are on the menu. Come join us!! My Whiskey Story Part 5 - The Charred Cask
As we wrap up the first eps of the "My Whiskey Story" series I brought in one of the reasons I got plugged into the Whiskey community on IG. The Charred Cask, a.k.a. Jeremey Chapline, is a digital media producer and photographer. He composes fascinating shots of the bottles we, as whiskey lovers, know all too well. I talk with Jeremy about his passion for whiskey and photography as he shares with us the adventures both of his passions have taken him. Please check out his work at either of the links below. Please stay tuned for more in this series later in the year as bring on more folks to share with us their shenanigans along the road of Whiskey. Steve is the author of the Small Brand America series, the Bourbon Mixology series, and has written numerous other works in and around travel and drinking. The only thing that comes close to his passion for writing is his passion for bourbon. After leaving the corporate world and getting his writing off the ground Steve started the ABV Network. From his humble beginning with just himself and the Bourbon Zepplin, the ABV Network has grown into a massive network that hosts numerous podcasts, events, whiskey education classes, and has even made a movie! Broken Barrel Whiskey with Seth Benhaim
I got the chance to sit down with the owner, CEO, and Master Barrel Smasher (see video in link below) of Broken Barrel Whiskey Company for a couple of drinks and chat about his products, his history, the history of the company, and what Infused Spirits has to offer. We sipped the California Oak, the Heresy Rye, the Barrel Proof, two of the single oak series - Isle of Peat and Amontillado, and the newest offering from the company and the funkiest whiskey I have ever tasted, the Fen Walker. The Fen is something I encourage ALL of you to get out and try as it will play with your head in the best way! With extensive time visiting distilleries, on his way to nearly 150, Seth has had the chance to find the best product, distillery, and team to create his "unapologetically authentic" lineup. We talk about future projects in the works that may or may not include a mix-up of Mezcal and Single Malt Whiskey... not joking... MKULTRA with Jesse Norris
Is there anything better than a little government conspiracy? What if it's not a conspiracy and the story is something straight out of a Hollywood movie? Well, that would be the story of MKULTRA. A government program, run by the CIA, in order to learn how to control the human mind and access its secrets through hypnosis, torture, and illicit drug use. I am joined for the first time in the new studio by my friend Jesse and he and I dig through these murky waters the whole time wearing our freshly crafted tin foil hats. The Why Whiskey? Christmas Special Pt. 3 - An American Christmas
In this episode, I am joined by a very special guest. Michael McGlynn has been a mentor, friend, and my pastor since the age of six...he is also my Father. My Dad and I sit down to wrap up the three-part series on Christmas and talk about the history of the holiday, lament on our best Holidays, and talk about how this one may be a little different. The holiday we celebrate today, although not as old or distant in origin as we think, is still worth our time and attention. This year is going to look different. No doubt. It's our hope and desire at Why Whiskey that regardless of the change in tradition the covid-year brings, you all are able to find peace, cherish those here and be well.
