19: Bahman Sarram - Paths to Freedom

Episode #19

Bahman Sarram is an artist, violinist, composer, producer and singer/songwriter whose music ties together many cultures and expressions into an ecstatic celebration of life. Based in San Diego, Bahman has won over audiences with his passion and unlimited energy that vibrates through his performances and diverse musical palette.

Bahman’s musical versatility knows no bounds and can’t be categorized into a single genre. No matter what style he’s playing whether funk, jazz fusion, Middle Eastern, Conscious Music, folk or rock, his improvisational skills, raw energy and natural instinct for melody leaves audiences with a feeling that they have experienced something unique and rare.

In this episode, we discuss Bahman's early music days as a child in post-revolutionary Iran, where music lessons were officially banned by the regime. It leads us to a deep and important conversation about the universal experiences of artists who have left their homeland for creative freedom.

Today, Bahman and his group The Mystic Groove Collective includes a lineup of musicians that have been together for over 15 years playing for diverse audience with a passion that leaves listeners entranced at every show.

Sam Setchko better known as Simsamiza or Smiz if you happen to be in to brevity. Born in Oakland, California little Smiz was a rugged renegade who’d gone rogue and found his heart skating the streets of the Bay Area whilst discovering the intrinsic rhythms of all things. Eventually ascertaining that frequency and rhythm were different expressions or density’s of the same fundamental value he’s spent a lifetime artistically collaborating and performing in a myriad of mediums that sometimes are traditional but often involve chaotic spirals in to uncharted and unique eclectic expressions most humans find repulsive for about 10-20 years. He’s the most widely unknown philosopher of his time. This interview was orignally recored on January 10, 2022.

13: Derrick Skye

American composer Derrick Skye is known for integrating music practices from different cultural traditions around the world into his work with classical music communities. The Los Angeles Times describes Derrick’s music as “something to savor” and “enormous fun to listen to.” During his studies at the USC and the California Institute of the Arts, music across many cultures became an integral part of his musical vocabulary. Skye’s music has been commissioned and/or performed by ensembles including Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Albany Symphony, Berkeley Symphony, Dayton Philharmonic, Los Angeles Master Chorale among many. He serves as Artistic Director of the new music collective and arts organization Bridge to Everywhere. I really enjoyed hearing Derrick’s insights and perspectives on how and why he feels called to incorporate the music of many parts of the world into his composition.

Aminah Chishti Qawwal is a leading force in the art of traditional qawwali tabla. As a student of the great Ustad Dildar Hussain Khan (tabla player for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan for 28 years), Aminah has embodied this music through years of study and commitment. She has challenged the cultural confines of women in Pakistan and India not only by performing tabla in an all-male arena, but also by receiving permission to perform at the shrines of Pakistan's greatest Sufi saints, where women haven't traditionally been allowed to play. Aminah represents a new bridge between East and West in a cultural exchange rooted in ancient tradition. This interview illuminates Aminah’s journey into this rich heritage.

Since being the original trumpeter in the multi-platinum band Capital Cities, the Los Angeles-born, half-Filipino vocalist-instrumentalist has gone rogue, adding a new dimension of possibility to not only his sonic weapon of choice, but to pop music, overall. In 2018, he launched his own record label, Trumpet Records to facilitate his wide-ranging musical flavors. Spencer has toured and performed internationally with artists such as Bebe Rexha, Betty Who, Fonseca, Fitz & The Tantrums, and Katy Perry to name a few. 5: Deobrat Mishra

Deobrat Mishra is an 11th generation musician hailing from the Benares Gharana. He plays sitar, surbahar and is a composer. Deobrat learned under his father, the renowned Pandit Shivnath Mishra. Deobrat's ability to intertwine Indian classical music with jazz and other styles can be heard in his Indian/Jazz ensemble "Trio Benares." I feel lucky to know Deobrat personally and to have been able to spend time with him in India. He shares wonderful perspectives on his upbringing in Hindustani music and how he continues to find new inspiration within this ancient tradition. The song played in the introduction is called "Chaity" by Trio Benares from the album "Rajas."

0: Intro to the World Music Podcast by Will Marsh

0: Intro to the World Music Podcast by Will Marsh

Welcome to the World Music Podcast!

Here in Episode #0 I speak about what this podcast is all about.

My life journey as a musician led to me discovering the richness musical culture outside of the Western world. I'm passionate about sharing such music as well as the cultural ideals along with it. This podcast is a great place for someone who appreciates creative music and is looking to broaden their awareness of music outside the main stream. There are some fun questions and topics that come up when exploring the idea of "world music." One being that isn't all music from the "world"? What does that mean then for this genre/ term "world music?" In following episodes, you'll hear what prominent musicians in this field have to say about this.

Thanks for joining me and enjoy!
