By Gabriel Sanders
Hello, I am Gabriel Sanders, and I believe that there is no "normal". Every person has a story, which is their normal, and which I find fascinating. I hope you will too.
On my podcast, I have conversations with people about their "normal" lives, their "normal" journeys, occupations, lifestyles, and more... and what "normal" means to them.
Enjoy, and thank you for listening.

Everything is Connected
Ever feel like you're living in one square inch of reality and calling it reality? Well, the fascinating Dr. Betty Kovacs has. I had the great privilege to talk her about life, death, religion, and everything in between on all dimensions of reality. Ever since she was child, learning about the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Dr. Kovacs started asking the big question of "WHY?" Her normal has always been trying to find ways to break out of the norm, step outside of it, and find something beyond that, because that is the nature of all of our creativity. We get into her studies of symbolic and mythic languages, how religion has influenced our way of life, how the pandemic is an example of the decay and destruction of the heart consciousness in western culture, quantum physics, essentially trying to answer the big questions of life and human existence, and so much more. We also dig into the amazing connections between the deaths of three people closest to Dr. Kovacs: her mother, husband, and son.
Dr. Kovacs earned her doctorate from the University of California, Irvine, in Comparative Literature and Theory of Symbolic/Mythic Language. She taught Literature, Writing, and Symbolic/Mythic Language for twenty-five years. She served many years as Chair and Program Chair on the Board of Directors of the Jung Society of Claremont in California and sits on the Academic Advisory Board of Forever Family Foundation. Dr. Kovacs is author of Merchants of Light: The Consciousness That Is Changing the World, winner of the Nautilus Silver Book Award and the Scientific & Medical Network 2019 Book Prize. She has also written The Miracle of Death: There Is Nothing But Life.
Dance life in snake boots! Leave each moment fully, then let it go. Enjoy, and thank you for listening.

Celebrating the Weirdness
A great title for this fun talk with Rena Strober. “Celebrating the Weirdness” exemplifies not only Rena’s normal and how she raises her daughter, but how being weird is not being boring, and it's how to celebrate what's different. Rena says she can respect those that are "normal" but that's "just not how she was made." To her, every day is an adventure.
Rena Strober is multi-talented. She is the co-producer, creator, and performer of the Sesame Street album "Imagine That!" She works with "Dotz" the blind children's choir, a voice actor, she was on the Broadway tour of "Les Miserables" (and knows another guest of the podcast), played the Witch in "Into the Woods" at the Charlottesville Opera House, was in the original LA cast of "Reefer Madness," featured in HBO's "Veep," the Disney Channel's "Liv and Maddie", performed on the dais at The Friar's Roast and on home plate at Shea Stadium, and so much more. We get into classic Nickelodeon, a side story about Marc Summers of "Double Dare" fame, my connection to Ben & Jerry, our love for Mel Brooks and if he was indeed in "The Muppet Movie," and the amazing fact that her house is a pop culture museum.
We also get into her association with a famous murder in a NYC Italian restaurant, which was made into an episode for the OG "Law & Order," and Rena shares her feelings about fact vs fiction. Rena co-wrote and performed in her own musical "Spaghetti and Matzo Balls" which was based on that experience.
Order a "half double-decaffeinated half-caf... with a twist of lemon," dive in to this great talk, and celebrate weirdness with us! Be sure to check out her music video for "Imagine That!" on YouTube, and you can buy the album on her website: renastrober.com! You must also watch this promo video for "Imagine That" (https://www.renastrober.com/imagine-that-a-childrens-album/).... You will LOVE this album.

Being “Extraordinarily UnOrdinary”
Everyone has a story, and first-time author, Simone Knego, shares her own story and journey in her incredible book, "The Extraordinary Unordinary You." She has adopted 3 of her 6 children, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, co-chaired the National Young Leadership Cabinet for the Jewish Federations of North America, and she shares the lessons she has learned in life to hopefully inspire, motivate, move, encourage, and perhaps change the way we think. It was a fantastic conversation that I hope you will enjoy.

Normalizing the Porn Addict
*Trigger warning: there is talk of childhood abuse by an adult, and abuse directed by and adult.* Joshua Shea is a recovered addict from alcohol and porn. He is now an educator on pornography addiction, a Certified Betrayal Trauma Coach, TED Talk speaker (December 2020), and author of three books: “The Addiction Nobody Wants to Talk About,” “He’s a Porn Addict… Now What?” and “Porn and the Pandemic: How 3 Months in 2020 Changed Everything."
Joshua had a traumatic childhood. For a few years, he (along with others) was abused physically, mentally, emotionally, and sexually by a manipulative babysitter in a "house of horrors". At age 12, he found porn. At 14, he found alcohol. Harboring this trauma, later in life he was diagnosed as being bipolar. Joshua married and had children, and went on to become a successful City Councilman in his home state of Maine, a magazine publisher, and created a film festival. Having an addictive personality was his normal. Joshua says that "an addict has to always escalate..."
He took himself off his medication to have more control.... Soon, his successful life and career would all come crashing down as his need to control led him down an illegal path, using his investigative reporting skills to catfish young women online. He was caught. He went to therapy, eventually went to prison, and emerged as a therapist of sorts to others going through the same struggles and addictions he battled for almost his entire life. He found his purpose.
This is a very important talk, and Josh is brave to share his story and reveal very personal and private details in order to shed light on addiction, particularly porn addiction. Go to Joshua's website recoveringpornaddict.com where you can find all of the information you need to get help for yourself or others, more info about Josh himself, links, contact info, an educational course called Pornography Addiction Education for Partners… and more.
Thank you for listening.

Spiritually In Tune
Maritri Garrett was born with a gift, well, actually, many gifts. She is a musical prodigy, discovering this talent at the age of 2 1/2. Since then, every intention she has had has come true, and every door has opened. Maybe it is her open spirit that has connected her to the spiritual world, having many stories to share about her experiences with hauntings, ghosts, and various otherworldly experiences. Her normal is essentially being "spiritually in tune."
This was an incredible, mind-blown conversation that I hope you will enjoy as much as I did.

Normalizing the Totally Abnormal Experience of Having a Baby
Cheryl Kindred is a Newborn Care Specialist, Gentle Sleep Trainer, and former Post-Partum and Birth Doula. Inspired by the book "The Midwife's Apprentice," at age 9, she wanted to be a midwife or work with babies somehow.
Her first job was as a babysitter at age 11, and she found it incredibly rewarding. About a decade later, she began to make her commitment to the "well-rounded and comprehensive support to new families" even before becoming a mom herself. Of course, she finds babies amazing, wholesome, and the purest of souls; but she also wanted to make a difference with taking care of the baby and rewriting what's normal with being a parent. She has helped hundreds of adults with the transition to parenthood, with the importance of sleep of new parents and babies, essentially assisting the new parents with the totally abnormal experience of having a baby, and so much more. We also get into the disparities of maternity and birthing care with minorities and those in rural communities that is still an ongoing major issue, normalizing how we refer to the "private" body parts, and the importance of consent.
* This is a very important episode. *
(Plus: two special guests make their podcasting debut!)

In Place, But Out of Place
In this episode, I had a great talk with a woman who grew up in the world of Evangelical Pentecostalism. Miggie Boylan shares with us her "normal" of feeling "in place, but out of place," and how she found a way out. We also talk about our thoughts on the strength of prayer, the effectiveness of prayer, and how she was put into a position of being told she wasn't praying hard enough. I also get into my history of being an accident prone child.

Character Matters
In this episode, I talk to my good friend, Steven Leon. Friends for 20 years, what’s been normal is not talking about the normal! He is a person of color, and we have never talked about race, systemic racism in America, and diversity in the workplace! His normal is being a person of color, and shares his views on being judged. There are revelations and truths shared in our talk. I reveal some things to Steven, and his take on society is to “judge people by their character.” It’s a fun, beautiful, and deep convo and I hope you enjoy it!

Religious Trauma Syndrome
In this episode, I talk to Tara Tomlinson, a woman who was indoctrinated into Non-Denominational Fundamentalist Evangelicalism, and suffered from trauma because of it. Tara was brave enough to share with us her “normal” upbringing, and takes us on a journey along an “underlying river of religion” that connects everyone in her story. What Tara shares may shock you, or you may just simply be moved by it, or maybe listening to Tara’s story will help you begin your own (what Tara calls) “deconstruction.”

If you know of a dad, new dad, experienced dad, granddad, step-dad, foster dad, looking for support, or wishing to support other dads, spread the health and let them know there is a place for them.

Be Better
Dr. Errika Walker-Magra is board certified in Emergency Medicine, Navy veteran, yoga instructor, wife, mother, vegan, and more. Being a minority is her normal. She has recently been on the frontline of the Covid crisis, she’s a hero, but that’s not the topic of the talk. Errika has many normals to her “normal” life. Errika lives with her “interracial, inter-cultural, inter-lingual” family in an affluent, gated community, with a pool and tennis courts. I don’t want to say enjoy this talk. Enjoy Errika because she is a fascinating person, a brave person, a hero, a strong female role model, a Black voice... and a human being trying to do the best she can like all of us: Now that is normal.
Thank you for listening.

The New Normal
Dr. Scott Goldstein is... (inhaling).... a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (FACEP), Fellow of the Academy of EMS Physicians (FAEMS), and a EMT-T/PHP-tactical EMT/Prehospital provider. (Exhale….)
At the Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. We talk about his new normal working on the front line of medicine. We also get into how the new normal affects him and his family, as it does all of us. He is a “vector” like he says, using his “fat blob of electricity” otherwise known as his brain. This is also a reunion for us, after not speaking for 25 years, what better way to do that. He’s also a hero. Be sure to check out Dr. Scott’s website of amazing paintings. Incredibly Powerful. Haunting. Real. He is a very talented artist... (and budding stand-up comedian.) scott-goldstein.pixels.com

An Exercise in Madness
On this episode, I talk to one of my good friends, David Jakubovic. We’ve known each other for about 20 years, since he edited a short movie of mine. Now, he is the Director and Editor of the new powerful documentary "CBD Nation." We go through his life and career from editing videos for the Israeli Army, his reasons behind no longer creating narrative movies and prefers creating documentaries, and of course, his new movie. David says editing documentaries is "An Exercise in Madness.” I’ve always thought he was a mad genius, and I’ve always honored and admired his normal. I hope you enjoy our talk as much as I did. www.davidjaku.com cbdnationfilm.com

Picture This
Picture This: Patrick Harbron is a masterful photographer of the greatest rock icons of all time (Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Bruce Springsteen....), as well as idols of the entertainment industry (John Stewart, Jimmy Kimmel), on set of popular shows (“The Good Fight,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “Veep”...), big name clients, and more and more. The list goes on and on. His work has been seen in magazines, books, pretty much everywhere! His normal is being behind the camera to capture these greats in an instant moment of time that can be preserved forever. Like Patrick says, the photo becomes history. What an amazing and cool guy, and we had such a wonderful and fun conversation. I hope you enjoy the talk as much as I did. www.patrickharbron.com www.rockandrollicons.com Or just Google his name and you’ll go down a mesmerizing rabbit hole of amazing photography. Enjoy that!

Puppetry Dreams
Sebastiano has “Puppetry Dreams” me it all started with Barney, the purple dinosaur. A recent college graduate, he was a double major, literally building his puppetry degree like we would with one of his own puppets. He has not only Interned at the Jim Henson Company in New York, but he has created and built puppets of his own, and that’s only the tip of the foam iceberg. He lives and dreams puppets and Muppets, and is destined to be up in the ranks alongside Jim Henson, Frank Oz, Dave Goelz, Richard Hunt, or Kevin Clash. I hope his dreams come true, and I hope you enjoy the interesting conversation I had with Sebastiano as much as I did.

Optimism through Nihilism
Brent Weichsel is deep into the world of RPG. (Role-Playing Games). Brent is also non-binary and goes by the pronouns of they/them. The talk is split into 2 halves, gaming and gender identity/awareness, connected by the arc of identity. This is Brent’s normal, and their journey into self-discovery has only recently begun. I was so honored, touched, and moved that they shared their “normal” with me and with you.
Thank you for listening.

The Call of the Void
*Trigger warning.* Suicide, time in a mental health hospital, and illegal drug use are discussed in this episode.
First of all, if you haven’t seen the photo of him on the Facebook page, please do. Tai has a great smile, and he talks about how smiling keeps him looking youthful. He thanks Samantha from “Sex and the City” for that. Tai Collins lives in a van, that is his normal, and he doesn’t feel weird about it. and we talk about why and how he got there in this episode, “The Call of the Void.”
Tai listened to the call once and we learn what happened. I suggested to him once that he should write a book called “Tales From the Van”, and we get to hear about a few of those tales. Tai, admittedly, is a work in progress. We all are. He reveals that when he attempted suicide, he viewed himself as a “waste of carbon,” and thankfully, he is still with us. He speaks about his personal reality and how it affects others and vice versa, how he learned that he cannot change other people, and accountability versus the herd mentality. He says to be the best you can be, and prepare as much as you can, for the bridges you will cross on your path. He grew up in a camping family, so he knows how to live off the grid, and he has backpacked or “mailed himself” around the world. He shares his perspective of “the status quo” of living, his analysis of “nature versus nurture”, and the people he has met on his journeys. I learned, and you will learn, about “woodsies,” and what it means for someone to be “God’s punching bag.”
Yes, Tai, every day is a gift. Thank you for letting us in to your world, and sharing your “normal,” that was your gift to us. Your other gift to us is your incredible singing that melts our hearts, and can be heard before and after our conversation.
Please be sure to “grow your happiness flower,” and I hope you enjoy this talk with Tai Collins as much as I did.
Thank you for listening.

Mini-Episode: I Don’t Like Ants
I had just gotten bit by a red ant on my hand which inspired me to finally come out with the truth to my listening fans that I don’t like ants.
I hate ants.
But I am fascinated by them. They are wild, amazing, strong creatures. But I hate them.
Listen to me freak out about them in the recording, I was surrounded! Ever since I was about 12 in sleep-away camp.... The horror. The mayhem. Ants all over me! I get more into that story... I hate ants.
Thank you for listening!

Honor Your Normal
I had a lovely time talking with my friend, Adrienne Allen. I honestly did not know much about her, accept that she was a joyful person when we worked together on a tv show. Her positive energy lured me in to want to know more, and I'm grateful that she welcomed my invite to come on the podcast. Her life has been filled with positive support from her friends and family, and industry folk she met along the way.
At age 12 she wrote a spec script for a sitcom. She speaks about her experiences through the system of Hollywood and journey of self-discovery and re-discovery. Her determination to accomplish her goal as a television writer, and her challenges as a woman of color along that path, are not only eye-opening but inspirational.
You may find, as I did, morsels of wisdom to take home with you, such as: "Enjoy the flow." "Commit to and honor your normal." "Life is short, sometimes you have to embrace the way you're shaped."
From pressuring herself to do better at a young age, to wanting to help others in the fight to fulfill their dreams, or feel they've been abused by employers in Hollywood, she both a joy to know and a force to reckon with. It was such a pleasure finding out who she is, how she reflects upon her own childhood, her views on the industry, the strength she gets from the higher power, and how she bravely took the challenge to go to a place where she "didn't feel unique but made it work" for her.
I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did, and find it equally inspiring.
Thank you for listening.

“Warped Society”
This episode is titled “Warped Society,” and yes that could be a critique on the world today, but it was actually a college comedy tv show I produced back in the mid-late 90s.
The person I’m talking with is Will Nunziata, who I met when I brought him on the show as a member of the cast and crew. The “troupe” if you will. We had a great conversation and had a great time reconnecting. I found him fascinating then as I do now, but for different reasons. Currently living alone and across the country from his wife and boy, he speaks of being oblivious to world while growing up, living in a bubble of comedy, forgetting about the time he caught a flying baby, not being able to process the emotion of anger, and a recent panic attack. I also dive into my own childhood history of accidents, and how we cope with trauma. We had a wonderful conversation.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I mention “New Dads Place,” my support group for dads on Facebook. Will plugs his podcast “God Ween Evan”. Also, check out “Sugar Frosted Crack Cereal” commercial here: youtu.be/tzfwJi0UWzk

A Closeup of My Face
This is my first episode, and hosting a podcast is new to me, not “normal,” but I did it, and this is the beginning of hopefully a long journey. I spoke with my good friend, Ben Berger. Ben is a smart and funny individual, professional sound mixer, and award-winning filmmaker. In his early 30s, he speaks eloquently about how "abnormal" things affected him in his life, what "weird" thing I did to him pretty soon after we met, and opens up about 9/11. We had a great talk, and I hope you enjoy!
