The Notes Between With Evie Asio

Welcome to the next episode of our podcast series’ The Notes Between’ with Lara Eidi. Conversations exploring everything behind and about the world of songwriting! Our theme music ‘Breathe Love’ is from Lara Eidi herself available here

In this episode, Lara talks to songwriter Evie Asio

Evie Asio describes her sound as “musical storytelling”, as a result of her desire to provoke emotions and narrative throughout every layer of her music. Evie grew up in South-East London, where she used the range of musical styles around her to begin writing songs at the age of 15. After graduating with a BA in Music, Evie began her music career through releasing a series of experimental projects on Soundcloud and YouTube. Evie’s Jazz-inspired debut single, ‘Beautiful Love’ [2019], was featured on the AStepFWD September 2019 chart, and led Evie to be named a 2020 One to Watch by Premier Gospel. Throughout her journey, Evie has performed at notable venues such as The Spice of Life, Proud Camden and Jazz Live @ The Crypt, as well as supporting BAYLI on her London headline show in 2022.

In November 2022, Evie Asio released her debut album ‘Contending and Contention’, a 9- track concept album dealing with the themes of struggle and self-reflection that she has explored in her own personal battles. The album received critical acclaim in various publications, including Something Else! And Jazz in Europe. Songs across the album have received international radio play, with singles ‘Available’ and ‘From Here’ being named as China Moses’ ‘Late Night Track of the Week’ on Jazz FM, and ‘Turning Time’ and ‘Imperfect People’ being featured on BBC6 Music.

Huge thank you to them! You can also find our podcasts at number 9 in the top 60 Best Jazz Podcasts in FeedSpot

In this episode we welcome Judith Tick, to talk about her new book, Becoming Ella Fitzgerald: The Jazz Singer Who Transformed American Song

Judith Tick is professor emerita of music history at Northeastern University. She has published award-winning books and articles about American music and women’s history in music, including Ruth Crawford Seeger: A Composer’s Search for American Music. She lives in Brookline, Massachusetts.

In this first major biography since Fitzgerald’s death, historian Judith Tick offers a sublime portrait of this ambitious risk-taker whose exceptional musical spontaneity made her a transformational artist. Becoming Ella Fitzgerald clears up long-enduring mysteries. Archival research and in-depth family interviews shed new light on the singer’s difficult childhood in Yonkers, New York, the tragic death of her mother, and the year she spent in a girls’ reformatory school—where she sang in its renowned choir and dreamed of being a dancer. Rarely seen profiles from the Black press offer precious glimpses of Fitzgerald’s tense experiences of racial discrimination and her struggles with constricting models of Black and white femininity at midcentury.

Tick’s compelling narrative depicts Fitzgerald’s complicated career in fresh and original detail, upending the traditional view that segregates vocal jazz from the genre’s mainstream. As she navigated the shifting tides between jazz and pop, she used her originality to pioneer modernist vocal jazz. Interpreting long-lost setlists, reviews from both white and Black newspapers, and newly released footage and recordings, the book explores how Ella’s transcendence as an improvisor produced onstage performances every bit as significant as her historic recorded oeuvre.

From the singer’s first performance at the Apollo Theatre’s famous “Amateur Night” to the Savoy Ballroom, where Fitzgerald broke through with Chick Webb’s big band in the 1930s, Tick evokes the jazz world in riveting detail. She describes how Ella helped shape the bebop movement in the 1940s, as she joined Dizzy Gillespie and her then-husband, Ray Brown, in the world-touring Jazz at the Philharmonic, one of the first moments of high-culture acceptance for the disreputable art form.

Breaking ground as a female bandleader, Fitzgerald refuted expectations of musical Blackness, deftly balancing artistic ambition and market expectations. Her legendary exploration of the Great American Songbook in the 1950s fused a Black vocal aesthetic and jazz improvisation to revolutionize the popular repertoire. This hybridity often confounded critics, yet throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Ella reached audiences around the world, electrifying concert halls, and sold millions of records.

A masterful biography, Becoming Ella Fitzgerald describes a powerful woman who set a standard for American excellence nearly unmatched in the twentieth century.

The Notes Between with Nadine Khouri

The Notes Between with Nadine Khouri

Welcome to the next episode of our podcast series’ The Notes Between’ with Lara Eidi. Conversations exploring everything behind and about the world of songwriting! Our theme music ‘Tide is from Lara Eidi herself available here

In this episode, Lara talks to songwriter Nadine Khouri

Nadine Khouri is a Beirut-born musician and songwriter currently based in Marseille. Influenced by dream-pop, film soundtracks and spoken-word, her sound has been described as a #music born of perennial outsider-status.” Discovered by legendary producer John Parish (PJ Harvey, Eels) for her singular voice, Khouri was invited to sing on his track ‘Baby’s Coming’ and subsequently recorded her debut with the producer in his hometown, Bristol.

Self-released in February 2017, ‘The Salted Air’ cemented Khouri"s one-to-watch status. It was hailed by MOJO as "A thing of dark possessed beauty” in their four-star album review, celebrated by Q (Critics Choice) and selected as one of Rough Trade’s Albums of the Year. Acclaimed music photographer Steve Gullick (Nirvana, Bonnie $Prince" Billy) shot Khouri"s press photos and cover art. He also directed the video for #You Got A Fire”.

Since the album’s release, Khouri has performed in some of Europe’s most prestigious venues, including Royal Festival Hall, Botanique, Paradiso, The Berlin Palace, and has shared the stage with Low, Aldous Harding, Marissa Nadler, and many more.

Her follow-up album, ‘Another Life’ was released on French label Talitres on November 18th 2022. Recorded between London and Bristol with John Parish, the album extends the collaborative partnership that began with Khouri"s acclaimed debut. Fans of Khouri"s music so far will recognise her distinct and minimalistic approach to both vocals and music alike: the serene, dreamlike quality to her songs, suffused with otherworldly, beatific textures. Sonically, the album is set to a shifting sonic tapestry, taking in blues, fragile drum machine rhythms and sun-bleached 1970s Laurel Canyon rock. Though the record finds Khouri uncertain of her place in the world, her music has never felt more assured or precise.

In this episode we welcome Arlette Hovinga, to talk about her new book, How To Build Relationships in the Music Industry: A Guide for Musicians

'I’m Arlette, a freelance jazz promoter and media director from The Netherlands. Originally, I produced and programmed events in The Hague, where I lived most of my life. I’ve also toured with bands such as The Four Tops and The Temptations. In 2015, I decided to spend more time in The Netherlands than on the road and shifted my focus back to PR and marketing. Since then, I’ve worked with clients in The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Poland and Russia.

When I have time, I enjoy having beers with unsuspecting jazz musicians and check out shows at my favorite local jazz bar, Dizzy in Rotterdam. Some Humble pie; I was honored to win a Netherlands Music Industry Award in January 2020, awarded at Eurosonic Noorderslag. In 2021 I joined the 7 Virtual Jazz Club competition as a juror.  I was a jazz juror for the first time in 2019, at Jazz Across Borders in Saint-Petersburg, Russia, and enjoyed it very much. I’ve also had the pleasure of being invited as a speaker at the Why DIY Music Podcast and by Gail Boyd at Alternative Venues for Jazz.'

The Notes Between with Lara Eidi and Carmen Souza

Welcome to the next episode of our podcast series’ The Notes Between’ with Lara Eidi. Conversations exploring everything behind and about the world of songwriting! Our theme music ‘Tide is from Lara Eidi herself available here

In this episode, Lara talks to songwriter Carmen Souza

Carmen Souza was born in Lisbon within a Christian family of Cape Verdeans. Very early she experienced the “Sodade” feeling of missing someone with the long absence of her father due to his work at sea. She grew up in a mixed language environment of Creole, the Cape Verde dialect her parents spoke at home, and Portuguese, always surrounded by the Cape Verdean way of life.

Theo Pascal, her producer and mentor, but also one of the greatest bass players in Portugal, discovered her talent and introduced her to the world of jazz and other contemporary music that could help it develop her register. Carmen Souza has become a true world music force and one of Europe's most in-demand jazz singers, as someone said: "Carmen Souza does not have to decide whether her music is Jazz or 'World Music'. Her style is just as unique as convincing and her Cape Capeverdean roots are as evident as her desire to create a new language under the label of 'World Jazz'.

Lara Eidi: An award -winning self made artist born in Athens to Lebanese Canadian parents. This is also the essence of her music. All this wealth of experience converges into her album ‘Sun’, which incorporates Lara’s many talents as composer, musicians, singer and arranger, through stories of hope and empowerment.

The Notes Between with Lara Eidi and Ese Okorodudu

Welcome to this episode of our podcast series’ The Notes Between’ with Lara Eidi. Conversations exploring everything behind and about the world of songwriting! Our theme music ‘Tide is from Lara Eidi herself available here

In this episode, Lara talks to songwriter Ese Okorodudu

Ese Okorodudu is founder and leader of the extended musical family that is Ese & The  Vooduu People. London-born singersongwriter Ese (vocals, guitar) is backed a floating pool of some of the UK's best musicians. She's inspired by an eclectic selection of legends from Sly & The Family Stone and Led Zeppelin to Dr John and Skunk  Anansie via David Bowie and Prince. A killer live act, with an emphasis on improvisation and virtuosity, E&TVP are signed to Quadrafon Music Industries and have released two full-length albums as well as a number of EPs and singles. A third album, entitled “Glowing” is due for release in the Autumn of 2023.

Over the past couple of years they have been experimenting with adding jazz and African flavours to their already heady and eclectic musical stew. The first fruits of this have just been released on a new mini-album, Tainted Love. This will be followed by a more ‘overtly jazzy’ EP in the summer. Says Ese: "Jazz appeals to me not just because of its spirituality, expressiveness and spontaneity – it's also a very broad church with hundreds of denominations. Sun Ra is supposed to have once said ‘Jazz is what I say it is’ – I like that attitude. As a musician, I'm sometimes pigeonholed as a rocker or a soul singer but really I'm interested in crossing borders and mixing genres."

A captivating voice, raw lyrics, and genre-bending soundscapes have set her apart as one of the most exciting new artists in the UK. Her live performances have garnered her a loyal following and are a pillar to Ashaine’s artist brand. “Ashaine White is a fierce and formidable artist making a significant impact in the music industry. On stage, Lara doesn’t only sing but also plays the piano, the guitar and leads entire bands. Whilst collaborating with some of London’s acclaimed musicians across the jazz and folk scenes, she has self-released two EPs (‘Little People‘ and ‘Tell It Like It Is’) and, during the pandemic, launched and founded her own teaching platform, “Phonica Music Coaching”, through which she shares the important message of healing through music. This is also the essence of her music. All this wealth of experience converges into her album ‘Sun’, which incorporates Lara’s many talents as composer, musicians, singer and arranger, through stories of hope and empowerment.

The liner notes to ‘Sun’ were written by the Award winning jazz artist, writer, Recording Academy Voting member and our very own Women In Jazz Media Chief Fiona Ross. She writes: ”Music is an omnipotent tool. It has the potential to strengthen and empower. To bring light where there is dark. To calm the mind and soothe the soul. But these almost magical moments of connectivity can only be realised if placed in the right hands. Lara Eidi. Is those hands”.’

J.A.M. STRING COLLECTIVE is an exciting new contemporary jazz string trio, playing their own re-imaginings of works by jazz heavyweights, such as Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk and Kenny Wheeler, alongside their own compositions. Their arrangements leave space for moments of freeness, with a heavy focus on interaction and improvisation. The trio features Annalise Lam (violin), Julia Dos Reis (viola), and Miranda Lewis-Brown (cello).

Julia and Miranda met in 2015 through Gary Crosby’s (OBE) Tomorrow’s Warriors Jazz String project, String Ting, with whom they have gigged extensively across the UK and Europe. They have toured with larger Warrior ensembles such as Peter Edward’s Nu Civilisation Orchestra, and Jazz Jamaica, as well as played their own gigs - as a trio and quartet - in venues such as Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express Club Soho, The Purcell Room SBC. In 2019 they supported legendary saxophonist, Steve Williamson, in a UK tour. In more recent years Annalise also joined the larger collective of String Ting, first meeting Julia at a Warrior’s workshop led by jazz violinist extraordinaire, Benet McClean. Julia and Annalise struck up a relationship which continued through their Masters studies at Guildhall, where they would often meet to jam ideas, many of which have continued into J.A.M.

Welcome to our latest episode of ‘In Conversation With’ featuring music from Hannah Horton! You can find our podcasts at number 9 in the top 60 Best Jazz Podcasts in FeedSpot! In this episode, host Hannah Horton welcomes our special guest, Betty Accorsi

'I am an Italian saxophone player, multi-instrumentalist and composer, and my home is currently in the United Kingdom. I studied classical saxophone, piano and composition at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatoire in Milan. I was involved in projects spanning from contemporary music ensembles with composer Salvatore Sciarrino to the progressive rock band Psicosuono, which released two albums (Eta Carinae, Metropoli). In 2018, I moved to London and started an MMus in Jazz Saxophone at Trinity Laban Conservatoire with a scholarship. Trinity's academic environment included leaders in the London jazz scene such as saxophonist Jean Toussaint and composer Bruno Heinen. Searching for a more open-ended approach to artistry and composition, I moved to Goldsmiths University of London in 2019, completing my Master's degree in Performance under the guidance of Mick Foster, Paul Bartholomew and Dr Pete Furniss. I graduated with a distinction presenting a programme of electronic rearrangements of classical music for soprano saxophone and Ableton Live and a jazz quartet performance.
My main project is the Betty Accorsi Quartet. This was founded with pianist Finn Carter and drummer Scott MacDonald; they were the finest musicians in my year at Goldsmiths and very popular in the South East of London. We are joined by in-demand bassist Andy Hamill (Van Morrison, Martin Taylor, Ibrahim Maalouf). In December 2020 we released “The Cutty Sark Suite”, an album of my compositions blending Wayne Shorter, folk and punk. The Quartet was also part of 2021 Brighton Fringe Festival, playing The Cutty Sark Suite in its entirety on a live-streamed gig.  Our second album “Growing Roots” was be released on the 15th July 2022 featuring pianist Daniel Hewson (Groove Armada, Madonna, Incognito), Scott MacDonald on drums and Andy Hamill on bass.

Women in Jazz Media: In Conversation with Julia Biel

Women in Jazz Media: In Conversation with Julia Biel

Welcome to our latest episode of ‘In Conversation With’ featuring music from Hannah Horton! You can now find our podcasts in the top 60 Best Jazz Podcasts in FeedSpot! Click here In this episode, host Hannah Horton welcomes our special guest, award winning British singer, songwriter, piano player, producer and guitarist Julia Biel.

An award-winning original - singer, songwriter, piano player, producer and guitarist - whose neo mellow sound combines her jazz approach with art-pop sensibilities, Julia Biel’s unhurried, unmistakable and timeless voice drips with emotion with every syllable. Dubbed ‘fiercely gentle’ (Jazzwise) early on in her career, she continues to sooth and stir the listener in equal measure whether accompanying herself on her acoustic, stripped back piano versions in her current ‘Black and White’ series or singing over fuller studio productions.

Critically acclaimed solo albums featuring her self-penned songs, ‘Black and White, Vol.1’ (2020), ‘Julia Biel’ (2018), ‘Love Letters and Other Missiles’ (2015) and ‘Not Alone’ (2005), as well as MOBO and Urban Music Award nominations have launched the British artist onto the worldwide stage whilst collaborations with the likes of Ben Watt (Everything But the Girl), Stimming, Polar Bear and Soothsayers have given added momentum to her word of mouth success. In 2019 her music reached the ears of Bob Dylan who hand-picked her to open for him at his concert in Schloßplatz, Stuttgart as part of the Jazzopen Festival.

Her trademark warm and textured voice draws on the spirituality of gospel music, the joie-de-vivre of soul, the sorrow of the blues and the freedom of jazz, whilst poetic lyrics reveal a sharp perspective on life and love against a magical backdrop of contemporary musical soundscapes to lose yourself in. The sound of an intense inner musicality paired with a defiant passion and a burning and individualistic creative spirit, these are the qualities that have seen Julia Biel compared time and again to some of music’s most celebrated voices ranging from Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone and Billie Holiday to Björk, Radiohead, Amy Winehouse and Chet Baker.

“There’s so much strength that shines through their vulnerabilities”, says Julia of these comparisons. “They inspire me to be fearless in mood and melody - that’s what I’m striving for.”

Women in Jazz Media: In Conversation with...Aydenne Simone

Women in Jazz Media: In Conversation with...Aydenne Simone

In this episode we have tempted back special guest host, Hannah Horton who chats to Aydenne Simone – Big Mama!

Aydenne has been dubbed ‘London’s Queen of Swing’ a badge she wears with pride and honour. The Big Mama Trio came about organically as ‘band trees’ do, but Mama wanted to have a band that ‘got her’, understood what proper jazz swing sounded like.  Mama wanted musicians that could swing like the clappers and she meant really swing! The most important thing for Aydenne was that her musicians played with authenticity, not just what was in front of them.  The history of jazz is about how it feels.  Feel something, don’t just play it.  One of Aydenne’s favourite composters is Duke Ellington who said “ If it sounds good and feels good, then it IS good”.

The Big Mama Trio musicians play as if they were born in the wrong era, they play jazz as if they were born to, so it comes from the heart!.  Having been a jazz singer for nearly 30 years, to say the Big Mama Trio;  Olly Chalk, Tom Dring, and Gwilym Jones is the best jazz trio she has ever had is quite a statement, as she has worked with some super musicians over the years, but a statement she is willing to stand by.  Having been given a Sarah Vaughan album (‘You’re Mine You’ produced by Quincy Jones)  at the tender age of just six, quality jazz is in Aydenne’s DNA. Aydenne or ‘Mama’ says “ Olly, Tom & Gwilym just make jazz so real for me. Jazz for me is personal.  The most important thing about the Big Mama Trio is that each of them has authenticity, passion, and play with love and care.  The Big Mama Trio manages to deliver jazz at a level it should be played at,  with sheer quality, no snobbery, just authenticity, feeling and a depth of soul".

A little background for you............Aydenne’s nickname actually came from a song she wrote ‘off the top of her head’ called ‘Mama told me’, which she performed at a wedding in Jersey C.I.) with her function band ‘Jazz Culture’.   Aydenne’s nickname  ‘Big Mama’ is not so strange, in African or Black culture ‘Mama’, ‘mummy’ or ‘Auntie’ is a mark of respect for women of a certain age.  Usually a matriarch or senior member of a community or family, it’s lovely!.    So, Aydenne being known as 'Big Mama' or just 'Mama is a nickname Aydenne  just loves!

Women in Jazz Media: On The Bookcase Episode 04 with Maria Golia

Women in Jazz Media: On The Bookcase Episode 04 with Maria Golia

The fourth episode in our podcast series ‘On The Bookcase’, featuring female authors from across the world, with host Fiona Ross, with original music from Hannah Horton. In this episode we welcome the brilliant Maria Golia, who has an inspirational portfolio of work including her recent book ‘Ornette Coleman: The Territory and the Adventure’.

An American Author in Egypt. ‘Egypt where I’ve lived for thirty years, has been a source of inspiration in my life and writing.  My non-fiction books, Photography and Egypt and Cairo, City of Sand involved extensive historical research alongside an intimate understanding of the country’s present moment, its place in today’s world as much as in that of the past. In addition to many years as columnist and commentator for Cairo, Beirut and British publications (including the New Internationalist, Oxford), I’ve contributed to Vogue (New York), The International Herald Tribune, Süddeutsche Zeitung (Munich), and the New Statesman (UK). I’m currently Middle-East reviewer for the Times Literary Supplement (London).

Following Egypt’s 2011 popular uprising, as the unrest continued for over two years, writing about it all became rather fraught and frankly repetitive. The political side of the story may be summed up as follows: power seeks to preserve itself and Egypt’s seemingly inflexible authoritarian regime has so far managed to bend with the winds of the Arab Spring without breaking, while ensuring that no viable opposition can emerge. In terms of Egypt’s fragile desert environment, the subject of many of my articles over time, the main advances have been towards greater destruction. To achieve some intellectual distance, I turned to outer space. Meteorite, a cultural history of space rocks (2015). While writing Meteorite, I started listening Ornette Coleman(1930-2015), who I had the chance to meet while working at the Caravan of Dreams, in Fort Worth Texas (1985-1992), Ornette’s hometown. I hadn’t heard those CDs in over twenty years, nor had I been particularly receptive to Ornette’s music before. But the time had come and Ornette worked his magic. I was reminded of how little I knew about the musicians I booked to the club, and hung out with after hours. I grew up with jazz, thanks to my father’s love of music and my brother Frank’s decision to make a career of music and composition, but I had paid virtually no attention to these great artists’ lives. This knowledge gap needed to be filled in order to make those seven years of experience at Caravan mean something. Plus, someone needed to get the history of this progressive arts venue, located smack dab in the heart of defense-industry corporate American, on the record. It was quite a juxtaposition; while we were promoting the break-away arts in the 1980s, building on the gains of the 1960s and 1970s, corporate culture was consolidating, as a way of life and political force.

Hearing Ornette in the wake of Egypt’s uprising, when I had dared to hope that this part of the world would one day experience its summer of love, got me thinking about the 1960s. I was a little too young to experience it firsthand, but the ideas that emerged from that opening marked me. It was a time when artists of every genre were breaking with convention, convinced of their power to change the world, which for a while at least, they did. Ornette was not only there, his music was the soundtrack of the moment. In fact, Ornette was key to everything I needed to learn more about and to share: Texas music history, 1960s art collectives, the pre-internet 1980s, the role of jazz in the international avant-garde, and the life stories of some of the greatest American musicians of all time. https://mariagolia.wordpress.com/about/

In 2014 she also joined Courtney Pine's Venus Warriors, an all female super group who had their debut gig at The Hideaway jazz club.

Camilla’s love of fusing African and Western Music to make her own unique style is a key reason why she is a firm fixture on the new London Jazz scene alongside peers such as Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings and Zara McFarlane. Her music is a hypnotizing blend of Afrofuturism, hip hop and jazz. Camilla’s music is politically minded and heavily linked with African history and in particular slavery. Her latest album looks at tales that slaves passed onto their children through generations and whilst full of sorrow, is essentially a story of hope for black people and mankind that we can one day live together in harmony.
