Day 27: When to break rules; Song interpretation vs Perfection

Day 27: When to break rules; Song interpretation vs Perfection

These Principles are designed to build superb discipline and mastery of one’s vocal instrument, produce immaculate legato typical of bel canto, and maximum versatility for interpretation. However, the lines may become so ‘clean’ that they sound unnatural, so that the listener is taken over by the musical line and beauty of tone, and doesn’t necessarily notice the words, story or character. Depending on the musical genre, the singer may want to bend the Principles significantly. But there is merit in having the discipline, control, and choice so that one can return to these Principles when necessary.

Day 26: Song Review II;A look into "Bigger" by Jeckalyn Carr

In this episode, I will share my thoughts on the gospel song Bigger by Jekalyn Carr, a young and talented singer who has been making waves in the Christian music industry. I will analyze her lyrics.
Bigger is a song that declares the greatness and power of God, who is bigger than any problem or situation we may face. It is a song that inspires hope and confidence in God's ability to do the impossible. I will play some clips from the song and discuss how Jekalyn Carr uses words and phrases such as "You're bigger than the universe", "You're bigger than the things that can tear me apart", and "You're bigger than the limitations" to express her awe and reverence for God. I will also compare her live performance and lyric video versions of the song, and point out some differences and similarities. If you are looking for a song that will uplift your spirit and remind you of God's sovereignty, you will enjoy listening to Bigger by Jekalyn Carr. You can watch the live performance video¹ or the lyric video of the song on YouTube, or read the lyrics on various websites. I hope you will join me for this episode and share your feedback and comments. Thank you for tuning in!

Day 21: Singing in Cursive; What is it? Should it be done?

Day 21: Singing in Cursive; What is it? Should it be done?

In this episode, I explain what singing in cursive is and how it can be used to create a unique vocal style. I use a famous video from the American Idol audition of Erika Perry singing ET by Katy Perry as an example of singing in cursive. I also share some tips on how to practice singing in cursive and improve your vocal skills. Singing in cursive is a term that describes a way of singing where the words are slurred together and the vowels are elongated. It can create a smooth and flowing sound, but it can also make the lyrics hard to understand. Singing in cursive is often used in genres like R&B, soul, and pop, where the emphasis is more on the melody and the emotion than the clarity of the words. One of the most viral examples of singing in cursive is the American Idol audition of Erika Perry, who sang ET by Katy Perry in 2012. In the video, she sings the chorus of the song with a lot of cursive style, but also with a lot of attitude and sass. She even adds some extra words and sounds that are not in the original lyrics, such as "ooh la la" and "meow". The judges and the viewers were both amused and confused by her performance, which has over 15 million views on YouTube. If you want to learn how to sing in cursive, here are some tips that can help you: - Listen to singers who use cursive style, such as Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, and Bruno Mars. Try to imitate their pronunciation and intonation, and pay attention to how they connect the words and the syllables. - Practice singing scales and exercises with different vowel sounds, such as "ah", "ee", "oo", and "ay". Try to make the transitions between the vowels as smooth and seamless as possible, without breaking the sound or changing the pitch. - Sing along to songs that have simple and catchy melodies, such as nursery rhymes, folk songs, or pop songs. Try to sing the lyrics in cursive style, without losing the meaning or the rhythm of the words. You can also try to add some embellishments, such as runs, trills, or vibrato, to make it more expressive and interesting. Singing in cursive can be a fun and creative way to express yourself with your voice. It can also help you develop your vocal range, control, and flexibility. However, it is important to balance it with clear and crisp pronunciation, especially when you are singing for an audience or a competition. You don't want to sound like you are mumbling or slurring your words, or worse, like you are singing in a different language. Remember, singing in cursive is a style, not a rule. Use it wisely and sparingly, and you will be able to impress and entertain your listeners with your unique and beautiful voice.

Master the word "The"; How to master the most common word in singing

Master the word "The"; How to master the most common word in singing

The word “the” is the most common word in English, and it can be pronounced in two ways: with a short sound (thuh) or a long sound (thee). The short sound is used before a consonant sound, and the long sound is used before a vowel sound. For example, the water (thuh), the owl (thee).

But in singing, the word “the” may be pronounced differently to create a smoother and more expressive sound. For example, if the word “the” is followed by a word that begins with a diphthong (a vowel sound that consists of two or more vowels), such as “eye” or “out”, the word “the” may be pronounced with a single vowel sound that matches the first vowel of the diphthong. For example, the eye (thee-eye), the out (thow-out).

Another example is if the word “the” is followed by a word that begins with a triphthong (a vowel sound that consists of three or more vowels), such as “fire” or “hour”, the word “the” may be pronounced with two or three vowel sounds that are treated separately. For example, the fire (thee-uh-fy-er), the hour (thee-uh-ow-er).

Sometimes, the word “the” may be pronounced differently for emphasis, rhyme, or rhythm. For example, in the song “The Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel, the word “the” is sometimes pronounced with a long sound (thee) before a consonant sound, such as in the line “And in the naked light I saw / Ten thousand people, maybe more”.

In this episode, we will listen to some examples of songs that use the word “the” in different ways.

H or No H? The Dilemma of Yoruba Singers Who Struggle with Pronunciation in English Songs

H or No H? The Dilemma of Yoruba Singers Who Struggle with Pronunciation in English Songs

In this episode of the Making Musical Quantum Leaps Podcast, I will talk about a common problem that many Yoruba singers have when they try to sing in English: the H-Factor. The H-Factor is the way some Yoruba speakers say or don’t say the H sound in words that start with vowels or H. This can make some people confused or not understand what they are saying, especially when they talk to people who speak other languages. I will explain why this happens, and how Yoruba singers can fix this problem and say the words correctly in English songs. I will also share some tips and resources that can help Yoruba singers improve their pronunciation and diction in English songs, and also express their creativity and identity in their music. If you are a Yoruba singer who wants to sing in English, or if you are interested in learning more about the Yoruba language and culture, this episode is for you. Tune in and enjoy! 😊
