Every Easter we have the opportunity to look in the empty tomb through the eyes of his closest friends. The stone is rolled away, we hear the Angels question why they are looking for the living one among the dead. We run with Peter & John to the tomb, we run inside and look around. If we stay with Mary, we might hear Jesus say our name like he said Mary’s name. Do we believe that Jesus, the Son of God is alive? The crowds heard Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, they came out to see Jesus and Lazarus, and praise broke out! but the leaders want to kill both Jesus and Lazarus. Martha hosts a dinner for Jesus and Lazarus and then Mary does something extravagant, she anoints Jesus and wipes his feet with her hair. I don’t think she had any idea that she was anointing Jesus’ body for his burial. We worship the Lord with gifts and offerings. The Jewish leaders refuse to believe Jesus is the Son of God in the flesh. Even though they hear His words and see things He does, they will not believe. Jesus caps it all off with raising a dead man to life and the leaders can’t stand it, so they plot together to kill Jesus. Even the greatest miracles do not create faith, but God’s Word does. See how much Jesus loved Lazarus? We have heard multiple times that Jesus loves his friend Lazarus. And then Jesus weeps. Death moves us to tears and Jesus feels it too. Wise men come from the east, following a special star, a star that signifies the birth of the King of the Jews. They followed that star all the was to Jerusalem, but there was no baby in the king’s palace. So they followed the star to Bethlehem and worshiped Jesus, the King of the Jews. Years later as Jesus dies on the cross for us, we see His name written above him, the King of the Jews. The Angel says to the shepherds, he has good news of great joy for all the people, “a Savior is born and He is Christ the Lord” We love good news and it's even better when it's good news for everyone. Today, Christmas Eve morning, we celebrate the birth of the Son of God. Mary and Joseph obeyed God and called him Jesus, just as the angel said. Today we are looking at his name, Jesus. God told a prophet over 700 years before Jesus was born, that a virgin would give birth to a Son and we would call his name Immanuel which is translated “God with us”. And God kept his promise, a Son was born, He is God with us, God with skin on, and His name is Jesus. On Christmas we celebrate the birth of the Son, yes, the Son of God becomes familiar to His people, living among us. But we can not forget the majesty of Jesus. He is the Son of the Most High. That is God’s name, He is high and lifted up. Even the demons when they encounter Jesus cry out in fear. We hear these words around Christmas time, but what does “Prince of Peace” have to do with Jesus being born? Jesus is our peace and He brokers a peace deal with God for us. Today we are talking about the passion of Jesus, His suffering for us. I believe in Jesus Christ. Jesus took all the sins of humanity on Himself and gave His life as a ransom for His people. Jesus paid the price for sin that we could not pay. Jesus also gives us His righteousness and the gift of eternal life since He conquered sin and death by rising to new life. Today Pastor Nick will be digging into the second article of the Apostles Creed, “I believe in Jesus Christ”. What does it mean for us to believe in Jesus? There may be no activity that moves a relationship from acquaintance to friendship more quickly than when you EAT and share a meal together. We eat a lot together, that is we frequently get together around food. And that’s not just because I like to cook; Jesus models this for us in his ministry. Seems like he was always eating with people, sometimes He was miraculously feeding people. If it’s good for Jesus it’s good for us too, so we eat with people.
